Old thread but I wanted to share a life saver. If you are a person who likes to get into it a little bit. Remove the DPFE, drill out the rivets in the casing. Carefully separate the two sides of the sensor and look inside. My 97 towncar had the code and i decided to open the DPFE, there were three solder connections that go to the board inside the sensor, in my case, all three were broken. I re-soldered the connections and cleaned the sensor. I replaced the rivets with bolts i had. The code never returned.
I wanted to add my experience, since this code has been hounding me for quite some time (2000 Ford Ranger). I tried all of the usual fixes first of course.. Replaced the DPFE with one from a junkyard. That didn't work, code came back as soon as I cleared it. Broke down (figuratively, this never actually rendered my truck inoperable. Even when I had the DPFE sensor completely unplugged) and bought a new DPFE sensor, and those things aren't cheap for a 2000 2.5L. I think it set me back over $70. That still didn't fix it. After doing quite a bit more research, I found that the EGR system could get clogged with carbon build-up which has been known to trigger this code. Just to be completely safe, I replaced the EGR valve itself, the EGR tube, and cleaned the ports they connect to really well with carb cleaner. Reset the code, and bam right back on. I had already visually inspected all of the wires, but since the code itself makes me think electrical I decided to go a bit further. I very gently tugged on the wires coming out of the harness that plugs into the DPFE sensor. One came out with absolutely no effort, and another came out fairly easily. I suppose this could explain why replacing the DPFE sensor "fixes" the problem temporarily for some people. Handling the harness when unplugging and plugging it in might give the wire just enough contact for a little while. The parts store wanted over $30 for a new harness, so I went around at a junk yard until I found one in which I could tug all three wires fairly aggressively and they were in there really well. Unplugged the harness, cut off enough wire to splice it to my old wires, and the problem has been fixed ever since for $2. Well, at least I have a whole new EGR system now! I guess that can't be bad for mileage.
Here is another diagnosis tat should have been performed. When the dpfe sensor was removed the vehicle should be started so you can place a finger over the two tubes coming up through the exhaust to make sure your tubes aren't clogged. You can feel exhaust coming out of those two tubes and you know they aren't clogged. Then install the new sensor after this
Hey just finished replacingy egr valve and egr solenoid on my 2001 f150 5.4l, and finally got white (of the red, white, and black) small hard plastic vacuum line mended, and the p0401 code cleared but a day and a half later now I have the p1401 come up, now mind you my dpfe sensor is only 5 months since I bought the truck in march and noticed the dpfe sensor and hoses were not there at all, so would a dpfe sensor go bad after replacing the other stuff ? With only being 5 months old? Or is it a pcm issue like I've been reading about?
We have replaced all 3 components on my mother's 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis and are still having the same issues and getting the same code. HELP!!! Check light on, stutters while driving and also turns off while driving.
Thank you for your question but due to the passing of Michael we do not answer questions anymore. We thank you for watching but apologize for the inconvenience.
Greetings! Any idea about P1402 on Ford focus mk2.5 1.6tdci 66kw? What 1402 could be ? Also is it possible that bcs this EGR issue at startup of engine i have extreme bad smell of exhaust smoke, bad as it kills my brain cells how strong and stinky it is... :D Other explanation is my nozzles should be cleaned/reconstructed as they are making bad smoke at startup
This video sucks I've been a technician for years and none of my guys will ever just replace a part there was no diagnosis it was basically just changing a part

The rest of the egr system consist of the egr valve and the vacuum solenoid. Replacing all three components should not take much more than an hour.

+AutoEclinic I am sorry for your loss.....
Michael I have a 2003 Tbird heater control module self test code is 27 96.? What is that in reference to? thanks
Enmi expedition 98 tray esa falla el codigo p0401 y ese sensor me marca casi los 14 voltios entonces estara circuitado? Y cambiandolo se solucionara?
Code P1406 and P1401 on 2003 Lincoln town car is the same issue or different thing
Can u show how to take off. I'm having a problem
HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE A NEW SENSOR READY IN HAND TO REPLACE?
WHY DON'T YOU SHOW MORE DIAGNOSTIC STEPS TO DIAGNOSE THIS PARTICULAR SYSTEM.

Best thing would know would be what were the symptoms
