I apologize for my ignorance during the making of this video... the 105 Series LC was the last of the solid front axle. I meant no disrespect to all the other countries that received that wonderful vehicle.
One last thing mate... You've researched some great 80 info over time, but could you please try saying TOY-ota ? It's never been TEE in any language, as you keep saying.
Mate , I have had a 1HZ 80 for the last 25 years and I love it to this day. Only problem is everyone wants to buy it off me -) You guys over there only got the petrols, my slow and steady diesel is legendary for reliability. In a quarter of century it has NEVER let me down. It has always got me home. G'day from Perth Western Australia
@@kylestevenson1778 Did you manage to buy the Landcruiser mate? I have the same model here in Perth Western Australia which I bought around 12 months ago. Let me know what you think of her if you managed to buy it cheers Tony
The U.S. spec FZJ80 was only available with a 4-speed automatic, A442 and A343 respectively if I'm not mistaken. . A 5-speed manual was offered in other markets outside the U.S. for the 80 series. The 5-speed automatic came along in late 2002 for the 2003 model year of the UZJ100. Early 92 production FZJ80 models came with drum brakes in the rear, some had semi-float rear axles and up until 95, ABS was an optional. These oddball models are few and far between as most U.S.-spec cruisers were ordered with almost all of the available options at the time. Good basic introduction video to the 80 series! It gets very technical after the basics for the 80 series platform.
What would the advantage be for the 91 and 92? The description of that engine appealed to me. I'm a no frills guy and don't want to do any rock climbing, etc.
Thanks for the nice video. Yes, as pointed out below the 105 has solid axles and was produced until 2007. Several variations, very rare in the US I understand. UN used them in large numbers, well known in SA, Russia, Aus and all over the developing world. So people like to say it's an 80 underneath and a 100 on top. Mine has triple lockers, 4.2L diesel manual, air bags, full time 4x4, 1HZ engine, 2 tanks as standard. It's underpowered, lacking character perhaps, but it's the dog's bollocks for long distances in rough conditions.
He, He, My FJ60 still makes 120 KPH on a straight away. And the 80's (4.5 Lts Gas Engine and 5Spd Std Tranny) run circles at more than 180 Kph arround me
This is not really a true statement, my fzj80 Australian delivered has 570,000 km, the 1fz-fe is a very nice, smooth, gutsy and reliable engine, it's every bit a proper 80 series landcruiser.
Best explaination about Land Cruiser particularly the 80 so far, you really know your stuff buddy. cheers from Malaysia, all LC cost a bomb right here. Not to mention the yearly road tax cost

Hey Man, Good video and information. My neighbor daily drives a triple locked FZJ80 with a 6" lift and 35" x 12.5" M/T tires on the stock wheels. His wife daily drives an 99 LX470. He also has a 2016 LX570 and a 40 series. Then again he also is the owner of a very successful LandCruiser restoration shop where I'm at in NW South Carolina. I'm plotting my course to buy a 97 FZJ80 or LX450. My plans are to do a Cummins 6BT swap with the factory automatic. Keep up the good posts.
I'm in Melbourne Australia and have a 1992 FJ80R DX model or as I'm told it's called the "Povo Pack" as it has vinyl flooring, 1hz non-turbo diesel, 5sp manual free-wheeling hubs and No electric windows, No locking diffs, No 3rd row seats or sliding windows etc..... but I love it and it does me what I want from it as a daily driver and tourer. It has however got a 2.5" lift and 33's, rock sliders, bullbar and winch which is pretty much all I need for it.
Those are still made for South Africa, Australia, UAE but they do not meet requirements for Europe emmisions (although there are a few companies that convert them) and are newer than 25 years and can not be imported into the US. I know about them, i just can't have them where i live.
Thanks for the video. I just bought a 93 LC, triple locked for $3500 in March...300k miles but running great. It passed inspection here in MD. I repainted and did some base maintenance and got a new accelerator cable and throttle body after inspection. I use as weekend beach vehicle. I wonder how much I could sell for now?
I tried to kill my '91 FJ80 every which way possible so I could justify getting an FZJ80. I simply couldn't bring it down! It was like a young bull. Then when I found a triple locked '97 FZJ80 with 167k miles, I sold it for $500 just to get rid of it. That was stupid! Love my '97 LC, but should have kept that under powered, super reliable '91 LC. We had crazy adventures together in the deserts of California. I miss it very much! Anyway, this '97 is going to the grave with me. It's my pride and joy, on the pavement and on gravel. In essence, both of these are amazing vehicles that are in their elements in the toughest of terrains. Nice video, BTW!
I had a 95 and a 97 and loved them both. The only thing I did not like about them was the birfields.......very costly and time consuming repairs. Currently have a GX470 (Landcruiser Prado 120 in foreign markets). Liking it so far
The first years FZJ - 93 and 94 did not have air bags. 94 was also the last year Toyota was spelled out in the grill for the LC. In 95, Toyota added the "T" in the grill we still see today.
A slight correction... Firstly the subsequent 100 series could also be had with a solid front axle - it was called the 105,but maybe not in North America Also outside the US the not all 80 series came with full time 4x4. I have the 3rd world version here in South Africa. (1997) It has a carburettor 1FZ and part time 4x4 with locking front hubs. Also no ABS or airbags. It loses out in torque / power above 2800 rpm but that doesn't matter for what I do with it. I specifically bought the carburettor version because it copes better with bad fuel and there is no electronics to drown or go wrong.
I just bought a 92’ Land Cruiser 100% rust free (desert truck) for $3,000. Runs great, we just did a 350 miles road trip on deep snow and I am in love with the 80 series. I’m looking for a TDI swap because the gas mileage is awful. A TDI can put out 180whp and 330wtq. (Better than the 150/227 from the 4.0 3FE).
1993-1994 have the a442 bus transmisison, 95-97 have the a343 4runner transmission, all 4 speed auto....if you plan on working it hard and towing with it I would recommend the bus transmission...
I have a 2009 76 Series. Solid front axle. The 70 Series are still made and available in 2021 in Australia, Africa, and here in the Middle East. Actually, the 70 Series is even better than the 80 Series. 80 series was a luxury wagon. Still great, but it was a luxury version.

Light mechanical... The fz is what you want. Easy to work on, torque, torque down low, this thing has it. Toyota don't make engines to push shit. I have had the opposite to drive all... The petrol stands out...
