Sumukhi - Palace of illusions is my gift book as well . I love that book.
Why did this episode ever have to end!? GUYS Sumukhi, should do a monthly appearance! (request you to consider this :P )The love for "A suitable boy" is mutual, and I think I'm dying to re-read it this summer purely because of the discussions that ensued on this episode!
Can you get Karuna Nundy as a guest please? The conversation would be so interesting!
No mention of R.K. Narayan. I am kind of disappointed. But, there were many great reccos nonetheless. :) I am reading A family secret and other stories by Bijoya Sawian. It’s a collection of ten short stories set in Meghalaya which explores the beautiful place through lives of the women there. And Suki by Suniti Namjoshi. It’s a memoir as well as an elegy which is about the author’s cat. It’s about loving someone whose days are numbered and coping with their loss.
My Book Den These recos are amazing :) We did a lot of R.K. Narayan in our short stories episode with Naveen, check it out!
My Book Den yes and mulk Raj anand, premchand... although they recommended many good ones
Please consider adding goodreads links of the books you mention
Re-watching all Books on Toast episodes during lock down
The most underrated Indian author is Siddharth chowdhury by far. His short story collection, the Patna manual of style is a must read. The fact that more people don't know about him keeps me awake at night.
Sumukhi just makes it livelier. Great one. And I guess one dislike is from Shiv ji for that 'chill Parvati' joke :D
I just finished reading 'a suitable boy'!!! I agree.. it was so not what I thought it would be.. was a brilliant snapshot of the time.. interweaving so many strata of Indian society.. the anglophiles, the freedom fighters, the lower social classes like the chamars, along with religious issues, moral issues.. all revolving around most prevalent middle class concern.. BETI KI SHAADI. So good.
Thank you for this BoTcast.. I enjoyed it so much.. I haven't delved into Indian literature all that much.. n have been thinking of exploring it more. This was the perfect introduction or rather kick-in-the-pichwada for me 🤗
"Harry Potter should have been a TV series" - YAASSSSSSS SUMUKHI I FUCKEN LOVE YOU FOR SAYING THAT!!!
OMG....Sharin you are looking so damn gorgeous 😘
Dudette, there's a queue here
I always find myself coming back to this episode every week or so and watch it with a smile on my face throughout! You guys are the best!! And this is easily one of my favourite BoT videos after the harry potter botcast!❤️
I have never read a book in my life but i've watched every video on your channel!!
Rafeeq Mohammed lol
Arre then read na!
school books bhi nahi padhe kya?
like, kuch bhi
'aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak' ....heh....I just bought the book We that are young....which they reviewed ages back.
Hurray! I love all the three of you! Sharin rocking with the bindi again :)
I hope I get to see more of anuya's puns
Guys, you've got to make another part of this conversation, because it's one of my favourite book conversations till date, and do talk of Jerry Pinto's, "Em and the Big Hoom".
This made my day. I am so glad you guys are back and Sumukhi was perfect.
That's what she said.
Sumukhi smiling slyly while Sharin was speaking about Aatish Taseer was hilarious. Loved the BoTcast. I keep watching the episodes and realise how much there’s to read in the world but I never get around to reading regularly.
Hi Anuya and Sharin! I just wanted to tell you how much I've come to love your podcast, especially since I moved to a different country and started living alone. Passive participation in your conversations with a mug of hot chocolate was super comforting through a very long and depressing Northern European winter. Said love is evidenced by the fact that this is my first UA-cam comment EVER (I am a mildly creepy but harmless internet ghost otherwise- lurking about and stalking rampantly but shunning exposure :P), but the credit goes to you two and your team for creating a safe space for social media shy book nerds like me. To not have an anxiety attack about BEING SEEN ON THE INTERNET is a big deal for me, so PLEASE TAKE LOVE AND APPRECIATION, thankyouverymuchpleaseokaysorrybye.
PS- This was a really fun episode :) a couple more works of Indian fiction that I have enjoyed immensely were Attia Hosain's Sunlight on a Broken Column (also beautifully evocative of partition-era Lucknow) and Mulk Raj Anand's The Village Trilogy.
PPS- I'll be watching you. In the nicest way possible.
Whew! Its been so long! Thank you for coming back! OK, let me watch it now.
i was expecting a mention of Kiran Nagarkar or Arundhati Roy
I am just glad there's a new video not like I'm running short on books I should and want to read but you guys are awesome. Idk how many people relate to either of the hosts or the guests on the show but if they do in a way that their reading habits sorta match, one just instantly feels like they're a part of the conversation and it is fun.
This is one of my favourite genres and Amitav Ghosh is my favourite author! Love Sharin’s observation about his stories always being from the POV of marginalised characters. - The name of the character in Sea Of Poppies was Deeti
Sudha murty is a great writer... gentally falls the bakula, the mother i never knew, dollar bahu are really nice books.
And Mahashweta!❤️
Can you do a regional language translated works special? There is fine literature and I would like to see you people discuss the Regional language translations.
I just want you guys to know that there are people who really appreciate what you are doing and get upset when you don't come up with podcasts. But now I am really happy that you are back with a super awesome video.❤❤
nikita taneja Sorry we'll do better we promise
Just wanted to drop in and say thank you for all these recommendations. I've been slowly making my way through the books you talked about. So far after watching this video, I've read A Suitable Boy, Leila and Those Pricey Thakur Girls. It's been a good time!
@Anuya - I'm mid-way in this book "My grandmother sends her regards and apologies". The story is from the POV of this 7 year old who loves reading fantasy fiction, esp. Harry Potter ; and goes around with a red felt-tip pen correcting grammar and adding punctuation. So you !! Check the book out . I can't promise if its great as I haven't finished it yet but it's surely engaging.
On a separate note, love the BOTcasts . You guys are the bibliophile friends I never had (which is kind of lame of me at 33 :P). Hugs !!
I'm surprised A Palace of Illusions was mentioned but Mrityunjaya by Shivaji Sawant was not. Highly recommended.
Anita desai is my all time favorite author
Yes!!! I love Simoquin Prophecies, no one talks about this amazing fantasy series from India!
Simoqin Prophecies is SOOO good. Samit Basu never got his due.
Indian English fiction is mostly similar in spirit and structure, except for Kushwant Singh.
Just bought quite a few books from the links. I am on a mission to read all this awesome Indian Fiction now. BTW got the Leila by Prayaag Akbar reco from you guys. That book just blew my mind. So so good.
I am loving this channel during these tough times. Amidst this pandemic i see these bot casts go read the books 📚 suggested and come back 🙋🏻♀️
These podcasts just make me realise how less I read.
Me too😣
Just found this channel..love it..u guys r so much fun!
Ohh my god, Sumukhi's expressions when Sharin is Sharin(g) her thoughts about Aatish Taseer .... such a joy to watch !!
Ditto 😁
The best botcast so far! Will definitely pick up the books you guys mentioned :)
Missed RK Narayanan though....
The Opium wars that Amutav Ghosh is also beautifully written about in Tai Pan.
Hey guys !loved the episode, but Bittora isn't like lucknow, it's a lot more like the rural villages in and around UP - Uttarakhand ( i used to live on a farm in Uttarakhand and this book encapsulated a lot of the politics there) , this representation is again really inspired by Anuja Chauhan's mother in law, Margaret Alva, who was posted for a long time in Dehradun.
What a lovely episode! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Krishna Udayasankar in her novel also explored the relationship between Krishna & Draupadi.
Shashi Deshpande is another brilliant Indian Fiction writer
WHY ARE YOU GUYS SO AMAZING?!?!?!?
Amish's Shiva Triology was awesome
Was waiting for this for such a long time. So happy that you discussed Rohinton Mistry books. He is one of my favourite author and though his books devastate me I love his books
Serious men on the table. One of my favourite indian author
FINALLY!
I have been waiting for soooo long.
Great Indian Novel is a funny version of Mahabharat :p Also Indian Independence. Also if you guys can still read middle-grade books, Aru Shah and the End of Time! A recently released one, it's Percy Jackson but with Hindu Mythology and female lead! Lots of fun! Palace of Illusions is LOVE, though, also Amitav Ghosh
Nickel Tesla hey thanks for thou comment :) we spoke about the great Indian novel on the episode with Anuvab pal. Shall check out Aru shah. And OMG hell yeah to LiteraryLay :)
You guys.. You take such a long time. But you always bring an amazing guest and make up for everything! You guys rock!
Omg! After eons! Missed you guys!
Rajiv Gandhi didn't bring Liberalization. PV Narasmiha Rao did. Tch tch. :'(
sharad hotha and manmohan singh was finance minister
sharad hotha bjp it cell hai.
vivek singh Why do you think that?
Why am I watching it now? Maybe to realize that editing is very important for a writer...👍 my favorite is indian fiction..my childhood is full of nostalgic memories of reading the amar chitra katha stories..
Hungry tide sounds like this marathi movie Ajoba!
You guys missed The lost flamingoes of bombay. This book clicked, amazingly written. Must read.
There is a book in odiya by prativa Ray called Yajnaseni (1984), she is winner of jnanpith award ...here aslo she writes the mahabharat from the point of view of draupadi, the book starts as a letter to krishna like..." Priya sakha" the English translated versions are also available
This was much needed!!! Great Botcast!!!

Many authors missed out - RK Narayan, Tagore, Anita Desai, Kiran Desai, Arundhati Roy, Mulk Raj Anand....
I know this is about books, but man Sharin you look waaaaay hottttttterrrr with a bindi.
Have you read Ashwin Sanghi's books? I really liked Chanakya's Chant and The Krishna Key. His style is reminiscent of Dan Brown's. Also Sita's Sister and Karna's Wife by Kavita Kane are great!
Krishna key i have read is good
Anuya ...you had me at the way you said "Kids" :)

“Sangharsh in her pants” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Loved the episode!!
Lovely episode, but Arundhati Roy cannot be skipped!
Great episode guys. worth the wait😄👍🏼. And as usual after watching an episode m confused about which book to start with. BTW wat is a luna class !?

Came here from sumukshis instagram ❤❤
Great video..can you do a video on books with feminist theme..? Thanks
Good to know about Indian authors!
Make one on how an elderly person passes his or her wisdom on younger person. Now I am not sure of what genre you can put it in , if there any that is.
I had to read Such A Long Journey for i guess sy or tyba. And totally agree. Quite depressing. But I did enjoy his views for the particular political party in Bombay of the time 😉
Doctors India mein heart - heart kheltey hein.. Tu bhi feku, mein bhi feku😂😝🤣😂😂 #sanjivani
BoTCast is the most amazing yet most underrated talkshow! @Sumukhi is the loveliest firecracker!😝😇#pushpavalli
Please call vir das to the show too!
This was very funny. And now I need to order all the books.
sudha murthy , R K Narayan Books will be awesome.
Sialkot saga by
Ashwin Sanghi is a good book too.
Only 2 Indian fiction writers? DURJOY Datta?? Cmon!!
Is there a full version of the music which plays at the start of the video
You gals are great. But I like how you are talking about the limitations of Indian fiction without considering Non-English books. Thats the beauty of Indian literature. I am sure with So many languages and writers, there should be loads of variety. So lets not say there is nothing without knowing them. Just a suggestion.
For ex: Jeyamohan is a popular Indian author who is writing an Epic. Its is version of Mahabharatha and I have heard people rave about it that the writing style is like awesome VR inside your head. I am sure this is going to be an Epic for the next generation. Something which will stand for a long time.
