I made my first olla from an unglazed terra cotta pot, sealing a piece of broken tile over the hole (from the inside) with a little wet cement, and then adding cement to cover over that little tile and out to the edges of the pot (smoothing it with my finger to make sure it's sealed nicely). Then I used the terra cotta lid to set on top. I got that idea from youtube last year. I guess that sealing two together would give you a lot more water capacity, but I don't really need that much in my little raised bed garden. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR EXPLAINING ABOUT HOW TO SPACE THESE OUT!
I live in a relatively wet ecosystem, so I don't really need ollas, but I've found that growing some of my garden plants in partially buried terracotta pots is doubly useful. For one thing, I can grow plants that like warmth and dryness a bit more (like peppers) in the pots, so the have a bit of an advantage in the rain. But also, when we have a dry spell, I can water into the pots directly, which then act like ollas for the plants in the ground. The real advantage here is that if I can keep my surface mulch a little drier, I don't have to worry about slugs nearly as much, and there are always a ton of slugs. Cool video dude. Keep it up!
While hiking in Anza Borrego, I came across a pot that I now realize was an olla. I knew it was a pot, but I didn’t know what it was used for. Thank you for explaining.
Everybody sounds on edge haha. Didn't mind the audio at all. Thank you for the video. Good information. Did not expect the actual making of terracotta pots. Cool.
alright the music is definitely annoying. I haven't watched this in a few years. it was a final project for a class I was taking and, of course, I put everything off until the last minute. stayed up 48 hours doing the project, things got weird. I needed music at the end, didn't want to use cheesy royalty - free music so I made some weird sounds. listening to it now, I can feel how weird my headspace was while creating the movie, I don't know why I didn't do a guitar track like in other films of mine. I understand that it is distracting. I'm sorry. I'm not gonna do the George Lucas re-release, we'll have to live with it. Thanks for watching anyways!
I liked the music! Like the animation, it helped me to focus in on the ideas. I am taking a permaculture course and a pottery class right now so this is doubly useful! Thanks for covering different methods for building the ollas. :D
I’ve JUST discovered this, and as a New Mexico native, that is sad. I’m moving in two weeks, and I’ve done a ton of research on this and permaculture and chickens. I’m dumbstruck at how I’ve been wasting energy which I then go purchase from the store. Also, there are very cheap terra cotta pots that have no drain hole. And the trays that can go under one size pot, will be a nice lid for the next size pot. ✌️
Excellent. Answered all my questions. I will throw a whole series of Ollas on my potters wheel, fire them and then set them out in my raised beds. Need to get cracking as the season will start soon. Thanks for the great video.
Holy Moly! I really really enjoyed this video, its experimental approach and the detailed and informative narration! Thank you for teaching me about ollas, I can't wait to get into it myself and thank you for sharing the wealth of knowledge!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR EXPLAINING ABOUT HOW TO SPACE THESE OUT. My one question is about the radius of the pot being used: Where do you measure the radius since it is wider at the top than it is at the bottom?
I've done the clay pot method with great success using 3 different sized pots (6 inch, 5 inch, and 2.5 inch I think) the 6 inch went on the bottom with its hole sealed, the 5 nests upside down inside the 6, and the 2.5 gets its outside sealed then is put on top of the 5 to act as the neck as well as a funnel for filling. everything got put together using clear GE Silicone #1 (100% silicone with no additives) that's just the brand I can get here easily. As long as it's 100% silicone (not the bath/ kitchen stuff!!) it's non toxic. Just make sure your clay pots are warm when you silicone them so that the pores in the clay are expanded and will bond with the silicone more readily. Doing it cold would probably work but I figure every little bit helps me from having to remake them as frequently.
Best, most entertaining olla video yet-thank you! I really liked the music...your video is quirky and off beat and made a video on the rather dry subject of ollas entertaining to watch. And to all the naysayers... he made a cool/educational video about ollas that you are watching for free. Quit yer
And to all the naysayers... he made a cool/educational video about ollas that you are watching for free. Quit your kvetching and go do something useful with your life, like make an olla, or a video about ollas :)
Thank you so much for the info on Ollas. I live in water starved southern Cali and wish people would pay more attention to our fading water supply and wasteful ways.
nice. can't wait to see the follow up videos. i'm definitely interested in knowing how many times you need to fill up your ollas per week during the growing season. i've been looking into dripping springs ollas and like that they provide a cap. i'm going to research some more and try it out next growing season!
great video mate, you just enlighten me about ollas which ive just learnes today. appreciate your effort of making this video and i just learn something new today 😀
I use the buried clay pot from Home Depot method. Use a saucer for a lid. Very easy to check on the water level. I used marine safe tape to seal the hole. If it's ok for aqua life should be ok for the garden. 🙂
Hi. I learned a little trick from RainbowGardens, a great gardening channel on UA-cam. In this, very large plastic bottles are used. I tried this and it seemed to work really well, tho I didnt do a comparison . But you get really big plastic bottles(i had a mix of 4 and 6 litre ones. Fill them with water, put them in the freezer and when the water has frozen take them out and attack them with a small awl or similar, poke lots of holes. When the ice has melted, bury them in your raised beds up to the neck. Then fill with water plus plant food(if appropriate), screw tops back on and voila! Water seemed to take about 2 days to drain away in a very hot summer. Not as good as ollas but much cheaper.
Hi, I actually saw the same video on RainbowGardens. I am planning on trying the Milk jug method myself. If you don't mind me asking, how far apart did you space your plastic bottles?
Great Video! I have to checkout your channel for updated videos on latest status. I recently purchased 4 Ollas imported from Mexico (pretty $$ :( ) ... but looking forward to see the result. I have just planted veggies around the Ollas and can't wait to see the results.
If anyone is in Central FL, we have a local potter who sells ollas at Green Umbrella in Winter Park, FL. They are not expensive, large is $35 and small is $25.
thank youuu :D as i dont have water in my garden at all, this would be one of main options :D. today morning i just put glass bottles like i saw on some vid here in india ppl do , but as soon as i found clay for making pots i will try this too .
Most awesome ollas video! I wish every explainer video was as good! Of course not the torturous music. For that you could face the death penalty in many small countries.
I stayed with the video only to find out that this is sort of the very same concept that I 'invented' myself earlier this year: I took a very fine, synthetic (for reasons of expected durability over cotton and to prevent soil from entering the water zone) net-like cloth, sew it in the shape of my container, filled it with expanded clay pebbles and placed it at the bottom of 15 cm deep container. Filling soil on top I now, after a few months, see that even after 4 days of heavy sunshine the plants don't get dry, while weeds growing on the top had a very hard time. Eventually they reached the moist part of the pot, unfortunately 2 days too early, otherwise the weeds probably died. I filled the reservoir up last week with a litre of water and since it has been perfectly fine. However, replacing the synthetic cloth with a flat board of clay could be a great next step!
Great information, thanks for sharing! I am a hobby potter from Australia and I think I will make some. Do you have any more information on volume they should have and shape and height. Thanks
The music is like static interference, not very cool :D The rest is cool, though I don't live very far from the arctic circle so we've tons of water. Tries it out non the less.
Thank you so much for sharing your very well researched project. A hidden YT gem (prob cuz of the music lol). p.s. did you do the animation? also very good.
Very good info ,what is glaze n unglaze terra cotta pot .why we have to use unglaze ollas pls explain as i really want to put this ollas in my raised bed garden .tks
At the beginning I thought the music was annoying but in the middle of the video it gave me a sensation that you where going to end capitalism with ollas 👌👌👌 perfect
When you have auch water scarcity, create forests using Miyawaki Technique. It not only preserves water also gives abundant food, oxygen and shelter. Also make a pond in between the forest.
Nice video!.... Pretty sure you are B.J. Novak..... You sound like him..... Thanks, Novak, for the American "The Office", and a great way to grow weed and tomatoes!
Very Good information but the music sucks it's hard to watch because the music is sooooo annoying JS but really good info I'm definitely going to use them in my garden
Finally, someone who mentions how far to space them! THANK YOU I have been looking for a while now.

+Will Geusz It's really not that bad!
I'm going to respectfully disagree. I got 38 seconds into the video and had to stop it.
I love the soundtrack!
Hahaha I can so relate to this!
Hahahaha I think it's funny 😂
One of the most informative olla videos I’ve seen so far. I’ll be using olla’s for the first time this summer. Super helpful 👍
Awesome video man! Crazily informative, well put together and without unnecessary contents

How did it go?
I didn't think of the weed angle! I'm sold.
i know I'm 10 years late but, God this is very informative and inspirational
Thank you for making this video most informative and well rounded one i have found on Ollas
This will solve the world food problem and the draught issues we are facing in some parts of South Africa. Thanks for sharing.

Best video I’ve found, and for some reason, the thumbnail threw me off so it’s the last one I’ve seen. 😂 Howdy from 2023!
Thanks for sharing. I'm in Australia, going to try some experiments when I get my next break of time!!!

did you try it out?
I'm in the desert southwest US too, thanks a lot for this video, helps me out a lot.
Love the video! I agree on the glue, would be good to know more about the side effects or to find a more natural glue
thanks for the info. hate the tapping in the background, very distracting.
Hate that tapping... Irritating
I thought same

Will, Great video! Looking forward to follow up.
thank you for the information, for the ollas and the many methods of making them, great job :)

all my questions answered. good job and well produced.
Great video, lots of information, thank you!
If anyone is in Central FL, we have a local potter who sells ollas at Green Umbrella in Winter Park, FL. They are not expensive, large is $35 and small is $25.
Wonderful video, I've found all the info I was looking for
The ollas you made look great.
thank youuu :D as i dont have water in my garden at all, this would be one of main options :D. today morning i just put glass bottles like i saw on some vid here in india ppl do , but as soon as i found clay for making pots i will try this too .
very nicely done. You're a great teacher.
So... where's the update video you said you'd provide?
Good video, thanks for all the tips and I liked the music too!
Most awesome ollas video! I wish every explainer video was as good! Of course not the torturous music. For that you could face the death penalty in many small countries.
I loved it! Thank you this was extremely helpful and informative!
I loved the animation.
Very informative video but music is so distracting that I couldn't finish watching the whole thing.

that sounds cool, do the roots grow through the fabric or along the outside of the bag? how did the rest of the season go?
I'm having a hard time visualizing this do you have a video on this? How has it work over time?
Great information, thanks for sharing! I am a hobby potter from Australia and I think I will make some. Do you have any more information on volume they should have and shape and height. Thanks
I sort of liked the background music. Cool video dude.
Great animation
Man. This is a long time ago. However, mis really well-done. Good Job.
The music is like static interference, not very cool :D The rest is cool, though I don't live very far from the arctic circle so we've tons of water. Tries it out non the less.
awesome irrigation technique :)
I thought something was wrong with my speakers
Good ideas. I'll try some of them. Thanks!
very good thought about the glue being used for glueing the pots together. yes people use silicon which is not food grade and it would be toxic.
Been watching various vids on ollas...was concerned about the silicone glues and toxicity. Thank you for covering this
Nice video! I appreciate knowing the firing temperature- how long would you fire one of your large ones?
Audio is more trippy than having ganja. Lol
Haha I made it at the end of a 48hr lsd and end of semester project binge
nice. You are very good at doing ollas !:)
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing your very well researched project. A hidden YT gem (prob cuz of the music lol).
p.s. did you do the animation? also very good.
Some glues are used in surgery. If it says it's safe, it's probably safer than whats in the soil naturally.
really nice way of water preservation n watering your pĺants..
I am going to try tomorw
DGREAT INFO GREAT ANIMATION TOO. VERY INSTRUCTIVE. IM SOLD!
Very good info ,what is glaze n unglaze terra cotta pot .why we have to use unglaze ollas pls explain as i really want to put this ollas in my raised bed garden .tks
Very very good job done Bro..!!!
Will, God bles you. Very didactic video, thank you.
put only rainwater in it, with little bit particles (powder) of copper and zinc.
you should re-upload this with less horrifying music
Amazing video. But use rain water. Tap water may build limescale.
At the beginning I thought the music was annoying but in the middle of the video it gave me a sensation that you where going to end capitalism with ollas 👌👌👌 perfect
Very nice video!
Very professional video, well done. :)
Great video
OH MY Goodness! I really wanted to hear your information, but I just can't take the background noise, wishing you could go back and edit it out.
Wow love this video
Awesome! Thanks so much 😊
damn i liked the music it was funky
The background music you have, has some sort of background popping noise that is irritating when listening via earphones
Thanks for the video, it help me alot
Will motar around a terra cotta pot be a good substitute for the toxic glue to seal in the water?
This is great, thank you lots!
Cool video
The olas irrigation is best fo pot or flowering pots
Great video
Intelligent thoughts , thank u
hey, great video! did you get a good grade? I thought this video was awesome

good call on the glue toxins. thanks for the video
Nice video!.... Pretty sure you are B.J. Novak..... You sound like him..... Thanks, Novak, for the American "The Office", and a great way to grow weed and tomatoes!
Use aquarium silicone to glue the pots together
good job man!
thank you for the knowledge.you should learn about permaculture, aquaponics and cob homes
the taping and clicking sounds made this video extreamly hard to watch. good info just could not absorbed it.
Very Good information but the music sucks it's hard to watch because the music is sooooo annoying JS but really good info I'm definitely going to use them in my garden
Great information.
BRAVO! I have subscribed.
Anyone ever figure out what glue to use to avoid toxicity?
love the video, thanks
excellent! thanks
How’s it going with the Ollas?
the noise is awful! i could not keep watching.
