Welcome to the reality of a lot of handheld ports at the time, usually an early pitch and planning documents were handed off to a smaller team after the ideas were fleshed out, and they're given maybe a year or less to fit what they can of the documents onto the portable consoles. Have a look at how some of the action games of the gba/ds era got shrunken down too, there's an assassins creed on the DS
@@hemangchauhan2864 nah, studied games design in college not long after the 3ds launched, but the ds launched when I was around 12 and I didn't have a main console for a while so I could kinda see the differences between a lot of games, especially with the longer dev cycles of the PS3 generation
Actually there are 2 ACs for the DS. One is "AC: Altair Chronicles" and one is "AC: Discovery", the latter tells the story of Ezio chasing Templars in Spain during the end of the Reconquista and meeting Christopher Colombus (And yes... Colombus is depicted as the good guy...). The story of Altair Chronicles is... Well it is something that you have to experience for yourself... It is considered cannon in the AC universe, for better or for worse. Both games have very interesting artistic choices and I loved them as a kid. It were these games who peaked my interest in AC and medieval history. I wish people would talk more about them online
I played the crap out of this on the PSP. I was really really addicted to it. I like how it’s like Advance wars with Hexagons. It’s definitely a whole-nother game entirely. But for what it was, I loved every bit.
@@SchwingyGaming I've never played Advanced Wars. I was going to compare it to Wargroove, but didn't feel right to compare it to other games that I know very little about.
I wouldn'T consider this a rip-off. Despite loving Advance wars, they don't own the "unit type and battle animation in turn-based strategy game" I would in fact consider this game to be more like the old game Battleisle, since they are similar game where both player play different phase (one move while the other attack) and have limited unit to finish a mission.
The art style is considerably lazier than Advanced Wars, considering that game has different sprites for every unit type for every faction. This game just changes colors
Really enjoy seeing more deep dives. Not sure if you'd be interested, but have you thought of reviewing other "Tom Clancy" games. I say that loosely as we all know how Ubisoft ran the mans name into the ground. I went and played Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare not too long ago after not playing it for over a decade or so. Was so weird, but had such a charm from the 2000's/Early 2010's. There is also a ton of Axe body spray adds throughout the game.
I have both the DS, the PSP and the PS3 versions. I think the PSP version was one of the games I got between my best friend telling me he was getting me a PSP for Christmas in October 2016 and Christmas of that year.
I loved my DS Endwar and was frankly really disappointed the PC version wasn't like the DS version. The little unit sprites and battle animations were fun and I found the story to be reasonably engaging. The level editor was fun to mess with; I loved building massive maps with every unit in the game and playing out massive battles. Plus I just found there to be more strategy; it still has the rock paper scissors elements but the jamming element gave you more options in battle; I prefer that to upgrading units prior to battle. I also enjoyed the large roster of units to mess with and all their unique strengths and weaknesses; no two units would ever perform the same in any given situation; what would work for one unit wouldn't necessarily work for another. I do understand your issues with calculating damage though; I never bothered and was just able to figure out roughly how much damage you would do based on the unit and its strength and weaknesses from how much I played the thing. I completed the JSF and EF campaigns dozens of times and the Spetsnaz campaigns three or four times; it was definitely a challenging game and that's something I enjoyed about it.
Thank you for documenting Endwar on UA-cam. The console experience was lacking on UA-cam. But no thanks, i didn't know that this exists and i don't want to see it ever again.

@@icecoldsnakeYT Advance wars series is a bit hit and miss, but they really were the best strategy games on DS, by quite a lot too. I'd recommend them to anybody, especially if you totally don't use emulators ever.
The PSP version was a complete mess and I don't even think I finished the game. also, if you haven't thought of this already, have you thought of doing "a Retrospective" of Ruse? Loved that game just as much as EndWar.
It sure is. Only a couple screenshots and a few let's play's of the early missions. Most of my footage was also early missions for EFEC, but that's mostly because I played the JSF on the actual DS.

On top of all this, Funatics were clearly ripping off the unit types, art style and battle animations from the Advanced Wars games

Tom Clancy's Advance Wars lol
If I’m being honest, it sounds more in line with the cinematic trailer and the books for endwar.
