Roland were on fire in the early 80's. I have the Juno 6 and wouldn't like to ever part with it. Their slogan, "We design the future" was and is still very true. The direction they are taking now is truly embracing and moulding new and upcoming technology whilst respecting and retaining their heritage for future generations. It's videos like this that bridge the gap for future generation. Thanks again for a soothing and informative presentation.

I'd love to see a real sonic comparison between the Juno-6/60 and the 106.

I think the juno 6 sounds the best

Edit: I'll never part with my 60 ;)

The mainboard and all the sound making bits are the same in both. You can take a main board from a 6 and put it in a 60 and it will work fine, but you have match the cpu versions between the main board and memory board. You can also put a 60 board into a 6 with no change whatsoever. The differences are in the high pass filter and final vca. The stuff about cmos etc is total nonsense.

      Fab video!
Totally agree- if a bit late to the party!
The 60 has a HPF with a bass boost on the 0 setting which makes a big difference, and probably explains the differences.
The post IR3109 VCA is the same BA662. I doubt the extra VCA before the Chorus in the 60 colours the sound, it enables that VCA level control.
The Chorus circuits are different as mentioned in the vid.
There is science behind any audible differences rather than aging caps..☺️☺️

@@amsynths the Hpf makes the difference in low sounds, making this clean sound sensation, more far from the Eighties sound.

It's cool how the lack of polyphony gives it that certain sound (note choking).

I went with the tubbutec upgrade on my Juno 6 and my 60 I’ve just left stock for now. I do enjoy the patch storage outside of the other benefits of the 6.

I like your videos, but this particular one would've worked a lot of better if you'd done an a/b side by side. It'd would be a lot easier in getting a true sound comparison.

i got a 6 from Japan, printed the patch schematics from the 60 and voila ... takes only 30 seconds or less to set a patch manually 😌 plus it's just more fulfilling and rewarding to use the 6 that way and you start to remember how different sounds are made... so it guides you to master it...its just a more intimate relationship like its an instrument rather than just a computer

    • @jasonokay

BS. It takes way longer than 30seconds. My battery on my j60 has been on its way out and I have to manually enter the parameters too and it's really annoying and takes forever

I just recently picked up a juno 6. It's mint. A woman owned it.
It was her Dad's. Everything is in Tac. It's Simple and Beautiful. Roland's Sweet spot .
I like both 6 & 60. Juno 6 has that charm to me. Today in my studio it's in good company.
    That's another Story.

What difference does it make to the sound with the 6 being unipolar and the 60 bipolar?

  • @mudsh4rk

I've got a 6 and I've had a friend's 60 on loan for a few months (these things were pretty cheap and easy to find just a few years ago, between the bands I've been in we had 4 or 5 60s and two 6's and my 6 is the only one that cost over $400, although it was still $300 cheaper than the launch price of the Deepmind 12 I'd been saving up to preorder when it came up for sale). Juno 6 chorus 1 is easily my favorite of the bunch, and I actually chose to buy it over the 60 because the continuous highpass control is such a useful performance tool. They're both great sounding, simple, player's synths though and if I was actually taking it out to shows I'd probably want a 60 for the memory even though none of the 60s I've played sounded quite as good to my ear as the 6's I've played.
But I wouldn't buy either at today's prices.

Only listening Juno 60 I recognize my Juno 6, Sometimes, when opening filters, but seem the sound is more clean in initial sounds, less characteristic of this instrument. Realize this is a very particular sound, how could I sell it!... I joing to buy the Roland boutique collection, as I can, for my mobility project, but seems I will take with me the Juno 6.

That "Off" button on the choruses is puzzling. Logically there are four chorus settings then. Why do we need an OFF button if presumably both 1 and 2 in the up position would be no chorus?

The JU-6s father, the JP4 is, at least for me, sweeter... It has more agression, bite, and can be really sweet too... The "Ensemble" has it's charm too, but the one on the Juno's is fatter. But then again, not nessecary imho
