I'll have to say my opinion of the owner wasn't great when I found out he was a student and driving such a car - and then blowing money on carbon fiber parts. But when I learned that he was actually working on the car and had it on jackstands, and then that he was able to replace the rack and program it to the car - my opinion of him got much better. Maybe he's the kind of engineer we need in the future! Granted, he didn't give you all the info, but he does seem to be learning some good lessons away from the classroom. And he has a great teacher!

No guarantee he wasn't under the car. He said the car slipped off the jack stand to the steering rack. Regardless, glad he didn't injure himself. That would have been bad. .
You've got to hand it to the owner. Finding a way to program the BMW steering without paying the dealer is fantastic. Maybe we all can learn from this person! Yes he messed up, but like all of us, those are lessons that carry over to many other repairs. I told someone the other day that in automotive repairs, you have to be persistent until you figure it out because if you don't, you neither fix the car nor learn anything.
I love Ivan. Nonetheless, it seems to me that during the reprogramming of the power steering, about 17:40, it was instructing him to turn the wheel one way then the other as part of calibration, prior to continuing. He appeared to simply hit continue. Can't help but wonder if that might have prevented the pinion angle sensor status from resetting as shown at 18:39.
As if the car wasn't already complicated on its own, he had to start making "cosmetic" surgery on it... I remember being young and full of ideas, only didn't have the cash for most of them :-) Anyway, he sorted out the mess on his own. Kudos for his determination and skill - he only needed to be pointed in the right direction. Great job, navigating through an aftermarket sea, Ivan!

Recently, the power steering went out on my 335d. A local Bosch shop flushed the system and replaced the pump, because it wouldn't build full pressure ($1000). Next, they said my alternator was weak and would only provide about 50 amps ($1300). I took the car back and did the alternator myself ($350 for a brand new Valeo part). I do not like EPS systems simply because they are not servicable. Ive seen them fail often with crazy results, some judder like crazy, some continiously spool to one side if you let go the wheel and everything else in between happens to them when they go bad. They went to EPS to save themselves money, however you the customer get to pay when it fails,AND It will. I will stick with the old reliable hydraulic system that can be serviced and repaired.
Next teach him that the junk intake he installed could potentially screw up mass airflow readings because the MAF is calibrated to the factory air box, and that it’s not a cold air intake, but a hot air intake, so he’s losing all kinds of performance! Not to mention his “dusting“ his engine due to poor filtration. There’s a reason companies spent billions of dollars on research and development; that’s a precision machine, it’s best to leave it the hell alone! I guarantee you the company that made that intake does not have the R&D budget that BMW does.
Customers need to learn what full disclosure means. I had an S-10 in here last week. They called and asked if I could squeeze them in for a front brake job. BMW (Breaking My Wallet).
So did the owner explain the miscellaneous screw that you removed to fix the wire?
Per Eric O, never believe the customer's initial report/request.
Bavarian Money Wagon
Makes you wonder if BMW is aware of this APP...
LOL...
I hope that aftermarket rack works out for him.
I feel sorry for the next owner.
Lessons learned. $$$
The price of the rack and pinion is close to insanity.
At 1min 53 secs you can clearly see that the black braided wire was squashed against the bolt head.
Customers need to learn what full disclosure means. I had an S-10 in here last week. They called and asked if I could squeeze them in for a front brake job. I get in the truck to move it and the pedal went all the way to the floor. There wasn't a sign of brakes on it. I nearly went into the ditch. Turned out it needed rear wheel cylinders and shoes. The master was bone dry. SMH
Total idiots
A S10 still on the road? Lol
@chrisanderson4799 still driving my 02.
They think if they hide stuff it'll be cheaper?
@@chrisanderson4799 My ex-wife still drives the 1994 S-10 Blazer I bought her in 2003, I drive a 1995 Ranger. Down here we don't have to throw them away after 10 years. My kid and I just got his 2006 Subaru Baja running this last weekend. Cant wait to see that one on the road. I have a hate hate relationship with newer cars. I hate them and then I hate them some more. XD
I think the owner was referring to the "Protool" app, not Protocol.
