  • In this video, young mechanic Aiman will show you and give you ideas on how to remove, replace and install spark plugs on a 2010 Honda Civic 1.8L 4-cylinder VTEC engine which is the same as other 8th generations Civic such as 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2011.
We're went with Honda OEM NGK Laser Iridium 1ZFR6K-11S 5266 as replacement, a genuine part which is the same as original, which should be good for 100K miles.
Changing spark plugs is actually very easy and in almost all cases it's the same procedures for similar 4-cylinder Honda vehicles, cars and SUVs within the same range model years such as Accord, Insight, Element, CR-V and more. Even other makes such as Acura, Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, they all should be very similar.
How much are spark plugs for a Honda Civic? The average cost for a Honda Civic spark plug replacement is between $83 and $159. Labor costs are estimated between $52 and $66 while parts are priced between $31 and $93.
    What is a spark plug?
Spark plugs are a crucial part of the vehicle’s ignition system. They provide the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the engine, creating the chain-reaction that generates the engine’s power.
How does the spark plug work?
The spark plug turns high voltage electricity from the ignition coil into a strong spark inside the engine. This ignites the air-fuel mixture, creating power.
What are the symptoms related to a bad spark plug?
When spark plugs fail, the engine will struggle. The check engine light will come on, and it may appear either solid or flashing. The driver would likely notice one or more of the following: engine vibrations, rough idling, poor gas mileage, excessive cranking time needed to start the engine, and power loss or surging. In extreme circumstances, the engine may stall or fail to start.
Can I drive with a spark plug problem?
The car will run with a spark plug problem, but it's not wise to keep driving it this way. If a spark plug isn't working, unburned fuel from the engine will get into the exhaust at a higher rate, causing problems for the catalytic converter. If the converter gets ruined by this unburned fuel, it will lead to a costly repair.
How often do spark plugs need to be replaced?
Spark plugs do eventually wear out, and failure is most common after 100,000 miles of use under normal driving conditions. But that can be greatly shortened by harsh conditions o

Wouldn't it been better if you used compressed air first before pulling the plug? Had there been some debris in there, it would have gotten into the hole.

There are a few comments suggesting better to use compressed air before removing the spark plugs.
Sounded very reasonable until I had them replaced by myself just recently.
You see, there’s NO debris while old spark plugs are in place. The moment you unscrew them, a rust from tread pops up.
I left it there, carefully installing new plugs so I don’t push it down.
Bottom line, I wouldn’t use compressed air whatsoever

Thanks man, I've done this before on my old golf, but I just wanted a quick reference to make sure I'm doing it right. I have the ass end up, had to do both rear bearings, rotors, calipers etc. Only 1 bearing was bad (very bad it was wobbly and loose, then when I got it off some of the metal balls where out whole thing was demolished. We commute about 150 miles a day round trip so it escalated fast. Doing all the other stuff (sway bar rods, calipers etc) for good measure have put about 100k on it so it's at 210k now. Just doing the plugs Along with everything else bc why not.

My understanding regarding the plug gap is that when it widens with use it put a little more strain on the coil pack which potentially could lead to premature failure of the pack.

Is that Civic one of the 2010 models with rear drum brakes? Would it be possible to make a rear drum brake replacement walkthrough at some point? It's such a PITA looking job when I try to look at walkthroughs but I'd bet if you made one figuring it out I'd be able to understand it very well.

I first loosen the spark plugs a tad to break the carbon "film" around the base of the plug. I start and rev the engine momentarily to blow this carbon out. This way carbon deposits are not pulled up into the threads while loosening. I have not had any problems removing any plugs so far but my understanding is that if the plugs are difficult to remove it is best to tighten then loosen alternatively to " walk " the plugs out. They are pre-gapped from the factory. You haven't had to gap spark plugs since 1989. If you have a modified vehicle, and it has anything to do with Air intake, Turbo, fuel pressure pumps. You need to gap them. Check 8thgencivic for more comprehensive information.

When they go bad. You'll know right away if you need a new coil. Car will run rough & the check engine light comes on. Go to Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, O'Rileys or any auto parts store. They'll put the OBD reader in your cars computer & it will tell you what coil went bad. Easy Peasy
