It must be worth over £50 million pounds and belonged to Crown Properties. Prince Edward was paying £5000 a year to lease it. Increased to £9000 per year . He paid £5 million to extend the lease by 150 years. Crown Estates paid £1.6 million towards the renovations. So at the cost of £3.4 million pounds he and his heirs have been gifted a £50 million pound property. If he was Joe Public he would have to paid Capital Gains Tax on the gift to the tune of £10 million as he is a connected person.
But he’s not Joe Public. He was born to the Queen of England. This is a place that has been owned by the crown for hundreds upon hundreds of years. Joe Public would never live there, so the Prince and his family live there.
I thought the Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate was a wedding gift for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. So why are they paying RENT from a gift by The Queen? I certainly don't call that a WEDDING GIFT !!
As Prince Edward they have leases on the property. They are given permission to live in those properties. And given they don’t live in the UK, they have to pay rent now to keep it, otherwise it reverts to the crown.
Elliot I know you pride yourself in being fair and balance. Question: When are you going to report on Harry and Meghan contributing 90,000 pounds to help feed hungry children in Britain during the COVID-19 crisis??
Elenita Reed, the donation didnt come from Harry and Meghan. It came from the profits made by the BBC from their wedding. It's a very misleading article.
Elliot I'm still looking forward to a reply. I think this fantastic news about the donation given by Harry and Meghan deserves reporting. What say you Elliot??

You misunderstood the rights and the privileges that the Sovereign is entitled to when using the State's properties. She gifted her son Prince Edward a property that belongs to the State and therefore all legal technicalities that come with a State property are applied. While Prince Edward can enjoy living in a royal property filled with royal history he does not own and cannot sell but he got a great deal as he signed a lease for 150 years which means most likely after he dies his children even grandchildren will be tenants of Bagshot Park free of charge and upon the 150th year the lease will seize and they won't be entitled to renew the lease. Prince Andrew had a better gift from the Queen as his gift was a brand new mansion with no attachments with the State and therefore Andrew was able to sell it and made a fortune.
Because they left. The house belongs to the queen so, as they live in America now she could let someone else live there. But m&h want it to still be their uk house, so they pay the queen money.
@ Harry will come back but not Markle. She will torture him with Archie living in the US. She won't bring Archie to the UK because she fears that they will not let him leave again.
Did you listen?? Prince Edward and Sophie pay rent and paid for part of the renovation s, just like Harry and Meghan are supposed to and they are full time working royals.
I agree with you. If it's a gift I understand renovation costs but what's the deal with leases? There is a lot of inconsistency with the royals? For example, the Monarchy has no real power but yet King Charles waited a lifetime for the top job. A job of going to never ending engagements of shaking hands? Like you I don't get it. Something is fishy.
@latishiabedwards1423 the lease wasn't a real lease 90k a year for this place. This 120 room, 51 acre lot place in surrey. Thats a gift rent. Its like 98% below market value. And it's a 50-year lease later extended by 150years. As in added so 200 years and it was signed when he was 33. His great great grandchild will die at that house. The great great great grandchild will benefit living there til he's 60 then it expires.
When he was renting it, he was only paying 500 pounds a month for a mansion? That’s ridiculous. People rent two bedroom flats for twice or 3 times that. And people criticized Meghan for what she wore, criticized Harry and Meghan for the refurbishment costs of what was essentially a dump. Everything is all upside down in that family and in the press. Edward and Sophie have usually been the nicest of the family, until the last time they all were in Westminster Abbey together... I guess Sophie has two sides to her, too.
They paid £5k per year for a few years whilst it was inhabitable due to renovations, then they paid market rent of £90k per year until he extended the lease and paid £5m upfront!
Royal Reviewer that is more fair. It’s so unfair that people criticized Harry and Meghan being “given” the dump of Frogmore House, when it sorely needed renovations just because it was getting old, and H & M paid for so much of the “final touches,” so to speak. And none of the Royal Family said anything in their defense. Good for Edward to pay that money so nobody can say anything. But H & M get criticized no matter what they do. It’s going to backfire on the Royal Family in the long run. Thank you for explaining the Wessex situation. Can’t trust the press to get it right.

@Sheila Hilton Great comment ! I'm starting to really dislike Queen Elizabeth and this monarchy! I am so glad that Prince Harry and The Duchess of Sussex left and start a new life in America !
I’m confused as to the British concept of a gift. The comments started with, this was a wedding gift from the Queen. How is this a “wedding gift” if they’re paying to lease it? Basically, his mother is letting him stay on one of her properties and he’s paying for the maintenance? He has no ownership of the property. Is it the same with Anne’s property? If the purpose of this video was to normalize the payment made by Harry and Meghan , it only made it worse for me. Why they had to pay for the renovation of a dilapidated house on the flight path to Heathrow that without the historic status would be a tear down is beyond me. There most be an apartment in Windsor Cattle that they could have leased for less.
Mic, when the Queen says gifted it means she’s letting them occupy/lease a property on her estate as a member of her family. It doesn’t mean the new occupants own it in anyway, but they and the crown estate are partly responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the property while they occupy it. All property on the Windsor estate is listed and protected and it belongs to the crown which the queen is in charge of.
Whose money does Edward use to pay the rent?.If it is the tax-free allowance he gets from us the tax-payers , he does not need such a big place as nowadays he does very little to earn his keep. His wife ,however is still a working royal. What does HE do all day?
Sheila Nixon, he probably inherited some money from his Grandmother Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. he;s also taken over the DoE awards from his father and goes on travels when his Monarch requests it. He doesn't get a lot of publicity as the press see him as 'Boring'. he and his lovely wife are probably going to do even more as H&M are no longer here, He only gets paid for what royal duties he carries out as per all the family.
@@RoyalReviewer Yes, I did! The issue is the £1.6 million that the Crown Estate paid, the low/nonexistent rent paid for some years on a house that is many times the size of Frogmore cottage! It would seem Edward who is tenth in line walked away with a better deal than his nephew! That is, Edward's renovations were paid half by the Crown. Later, it was backtracked and he had to make payment upon request! Yet, no one is complaining about the fairness of the deal where Edward lived for a time rent free/low rent in comparison to Harry having to pay upfront for all the repairs! It's the principle of it all!
We are talking about much longer ago where £5k per month for something that needed renovating was allot of money. You are also forgetting the main issue. Prince Harry only felt the need to repay the cost voluntarily after he decided to cease being a working royal. Prince Edward was at the time and still is a full time working royal. He paid part renovation costs and then purchased a long lease. Harry was not required to do so and still to this day would have not had felt the need to repay a single penny had he remained. So ask yourself the question, who got the better 'deal' ?
Why couldn't the Queen buy a home for them then they'd be no strings attached to the Crown Estate similar to that of the Princess Royals Gatcombe Park.
