Personally I really enjoy S.P.’s apocalyptic and godly (or ungodly) nature, with an opposite approach to the anime trilogy. While the anime trilogy’s godly Godzilla takes over the world as a force of nature, returning the earth to as it was before man, Godzilla Ultima shapes earth to fit its own needs, creating a hellish landscape, and his face resembling the oni of Japanese mythology reinforces this mythical feeling.

I really think the shows problem is a branding issue. Of course if they call it godzilla their gonna attract all the people who want massive monster action, and yes, they did not focus on massive mosnter action. They instead made a high sci-fi mystery plot (which i personally absolutely love) but yeah, the godzilla connection is weak and the show could have substituted basically any other monster because it stands on its own feat in a different genre.
Come to think of it, they should have thrown out godzilla and gone with a more lovecraftian creature if you ask me.

    • @BaldPerspective
      @BaldPerspective 2 роки тому +7

@@josevst7274 Agreed, but ultimately it seems like the execution was off. I haven't seen it cuz I don't have Netflix, but I was so hyped for this show. It seemed like the perfect blend of old & new, but judging by this video, it seems like somebody involved at Toho came up with the scifi-mystery conceit of the show & somebody else said, "That should be a Godzilla show!" & the show struggles in properly melding them together.
I wouldn't wanna watch just any run of the mill sci-fi mystery show because I'm more of a movie person, & there are plenty of Godzilla movies to watch, but a Godzilla anime with a sci-fi mystery? I love the idea! Killer elevator pitch too, but it just doesn't seem like it worked out incredibly well.

I fully accept that I'm in the minority here, but I truly loved every second this show. I've watched thrice already. Twice dubbed and once with the subtitles.
I loved the characters. I loved the story. I loved the animation. I loved the voice acting, both English and Japanese. I loved the fights (though I wish they were just a tad bit clearer to see at times). And I especially loved the high-end quantum and theoretical physics and how surprisingly grounded in real quantum and theoretical physics they were.
The only things I can really point to that I didn't love were the initial look for Rodan, but that gets better; and the frustratingly short time we had with some of the characters, just about any of which could have been a main character in their own right. I should say also, that, while I am a bit disappointed that the earlier forms of Godzilla _weren't_ reimaginings of Titanosauras and Varan, I am very sad that we didn't get a triumphant return of Gabara. I mean Salunga takes _so much_ from Gabara, just make him Gabara damn it!

In recent years I've grown to appreciate how open it is to make a 'Godzilla' product. At his point you can make it about anything while still sticking somewhat to what Kaiju are. Though I kinda wish there was more spiritual type stories like GMK.
But this show was definitely the idea of the Singular Point and red mist before anything kaiju related. It did feel like most of the early episodes were made to be an actual show and events and characters, but the latter end was more about putting a period at the end of finding the equation more than putting an end to the story or anything. I still enjoyed it a lot for how different it is. But like 95% of people think of Godzilla as giant monster fighting and it could've used more of that. I don't think the JJ fights really made up for the lack of Godzilla fighting.

Necropost, but this is a really, really, generic way of looking at Godzilla from GSP.
For one, they have 2 entirely separate themes and concepts. Singular Point is an apocalypse theme, while Shin Godzilla is a commentary on nuclear waste, and the Japanese Government's inaction.
Secondly, all they share in common is the evolution; Ultima and Shin go through 4 stages. On the contrary, Shin can go beyond 4 stages, Ultima cannot, he just grows exponentially stronger without changing appearance.
Also, there's no Shin Godzilla 2 because Shin Godzilla works better as a standalone movie, due to it's themes, and nature.

I can say as a big Godzilla fan, I can never watch s.p again and be absolutley fine. You hit alot of my problems with this series right on the nose. I feel the same way about Planet Eater. What got me into giant monster movies as a whole was the idea of monsters duking it out. There are films that work with just a singular monster (1954, 1984, Shin, King Kong) but when you add other monsters or mention them especially in a franchise like Godzilla, it feels like a slap in the face to me. I dont mind the science talk in any other Godzilla film because in all honesty its simple to follow and I know Godzilla is gonna fight a monster and i'm going to be satisified. When I feel the need to google a word every 5 minutes it especially considering what and average GODZILLA MOVIE IS.... It doesnt feel like a movie or television series as in rather a master class into some bullshit im most likely never going to understand lol. Also that red mist thing had to be an excuse to do as little animation work as possible. They copied almost every Godzilla apperance with scenes from shin so yeah...

Its not that i disagree with the arguments that point out the weaker elements of this series, but rather despite them i still liked it a lot. Things like general audio-visual quality, character personalities and interactions, the specific take on the whole subject of reality and kaijuu. It was not perfect, but if the flaws ruin it for some people, well i cant do anything about it. I had a great time. In moments where i felt like i didnt get something fully I just let myself go over it like "alright, lets just assume thats what it is and move on" instead of getting upset, mad, dissapointed or frustrated. I can be critical and nitpicky when i need it, but here i felt it would be pointless and just spoil my fun. I had moments like "ok thats wierd" or "man, they could do it differently..." but not to the point of "Its awful" or "it is just objectively bad and i should feel bad for liking it". I saw so many critical reviews of movies/shows made by highly knowledgeable people and many times I had a feeling that they must have a hard time to actually enjoy anything anymore ;). In my opinion it often comes down to "do the elements i like about this are enjoyable enough for me to overlook the elements I dislike?" and in this example they were. Im not saying they have to for everyone or if the show is "objectively" good or bad. Only from my perspective.

I basically felt the same. To be honest, I was pretty lost for most of the series, and I was even overwhelmed with the amount of information dumped on me (since I was just binge-watching it) and had to stop at episode 6 and continue the next day. But I just rolled with it, because the few things I did understand were pretty interesting and intriguing, and that kept me invested. And then, after finishing the show and reading/listening to some explanations online, I grew to appreciate the show even more. In the end, the show definitely needed to present its plot in a more clear and easy to understand way, for the benefit of the audience, but if you manage to overcome the complexity of the show, it ends up being pretty enjoyable.

I love Singular point because it brings back the mystery part of the Godzilla franchise. People are like: It's too similar to Shin Godzilla. Thats true that this anime is similar but thats one of the reason why I love it. Here monsters are not fighting machines but true apocalyptic, terrifying, mysterious beasts. Humans FINALLY get involved. Ans Godzilla...Oh Godzilla Ultima. My favorite Godzilla version. The idea of Godzilla being universe level threat is appeling. And the way Ultima got defeated is probably the most impressive. He didn;t get killed by more powerful monster. He didnt retreat. It took super computer that can see future and singular point to just stop it. And the scaries part is that fate of Ultima is unknown. It's still exist. But is just sealed. Since you asked; I liked the fact that it was a Godzilla series willing to take Godzilla in a strikingly un-traditional direction in the same way that was tried in Shin Godzilla. You are correct in saying that the animated series draws a LOT from Shin Godzilla; from the fact that the human characters have more emphasis and total screen time than the monsters and monster fights. Even the "mysterious song/poetry that is an underlying "thing" in the series is just another version of the "origami puzzle" thing in Shin Godzilla.
Don't forget the eccentric set of characters in Singular Point being a version of the "misfits" work groups in Shin Godzilla who eventually save the day.
As for your complaints about the "info dumps" all over the series; I actually didn't mind it so much. I'm one of those types who prefer to watch Amine with original Japanese voices and english subtitles, as long as the subtitles are done well.
So i just paused, "rewound/rewatched the parts with the info dumps (several times sometimes) until I had a good grasp of what they were talking about.
With age comes patience I guess. Better than scowling at broken-logic Star Trek and just plain stupid Rings of Power, never mind brainless She-Hulk episodes, yes?
The only thing i didn't like about G - SP is the fact that the entire series seems to have been one, very long prologue or introduction, hinting or even teasing that the REAL story will come with Season 2. you talked about "set-ups" in the series. I'm saying that the entire first season was a LONG set-up which stole ideas from Shin Godzilla, and it acts as a teaser to see if ANYONE is interested in seeing another season, probably with less info dumps, and more Kaiju-on-Kaiju action.
BTW, considering how many things you didn't like about G-SP, i'm surptised that you actually finished watching it. My guess is that you did it as an excuse to make mure UA-cam content for your Godzilla animation critique videos.
BTW2; I am in fact a long time Godzilla fan; have been for most of my - so far -64 years, and like you, I have had my ups and downs with the Godzilla franchise, including the initial American tuna fish eating version of Godzilla with it's many, seemingly endless un-scientific UN-GODZILLA contradictions.

Personally i love singular point because of the whole science theme, i just really enjoyed the talking and theoretical stuff about time itself, dimensions and somehow codes aswell
Another thing i really like is the designs this show demonstrates all throughout itself, i personally think that these animalistic designs are kinda realistic and i like them for that, they have a TON of really realistic traits that could easily find in an actual animal. It also makes me remember that at the end of the day, since the showa era godzilla kaijus at least are very inspirated by animals, they always were SUPER-FAUNA, its just that these designs make it a lot better to that aspect.
About the characters, i dont really like them to be honest, it is true that there isnt any charcter arcs or development, tho the show has 13 episodes and its completely about science and kaijus, it certainly wasnt made with that in mind.
The characters are pretty empty but with the 12-13 episodes format and SO MUCH INFORMATION there just wasnt any space for that. Personally i dont think its that necesary since the show just isnt about that at all, they save the world because why the fuck would you not if you can and in the case of mei she just kinda got caught into the whole thing, at first she just went to the archetype conference and didnt really choose to go to ashihara's house or to meet the people at shiva, she was kinda just dragged into the whole "saving the world" thing by profesor Li and later on by BB, and off course if you had a chance to save the world why the hell wouldnt you.
I loved the show anyways even tho it has a lot of flaws, they kinda hinted for a season 2 but they never actually did, i hope they do tho, maybe they can save the show with that

This eldridge horror godzilla was unique and creepy, while giving a lovecraftian un-understandable aspect to him. like to take him all in when he's in his red hurricane form will tear your mind apart.
Also the wild pseudo science that probably isnt correct reminded me of 80/90 anime like akira or magnetic rose. anime that have strange scifi fantasy vibe that doesnt quite make sense but makes you think what if, and is quite memorable because of its strangeness

I liked the series somewhat more when I went back a few months later and binged the whole thing straight as two 'movies' (in effect). Two Jet Jaguar movies, specifically. At its over-simplest, the whole series is a riff on the explanation from GvsMegalon that JJ programmed himself to grow larger, and how that could possibly happen (namely transdimensional computers made of exotic material existing outside time: all the kaiju are these abstract math computers competing against each other in disagreement about how to solve a deadly problem, except for JJ who instead are two abstract computers cooperating together to solve the same problem.)
That said, it's verrrrrry much an acquired taste. And the writers suffer from once again (like the anime movie trilogy) being almost unable to make the kaiju characters. Almost, because JJ is definitely a character (though not really a kaiju until the end, so almost doesn't count); and I felt like Anguirus came across as a character. Sometimes some of the Rodans, but that regularly got swamped.

unlike for everyone else i guess, singular point dumped completly on netflix in germany. i binge watched the entire show in one evening to night. i feel like the story and kaiju had a lot of potential, but things were massively overcomplicated or cut weirdly. i had to go back one episode and pay close attention to notice Li actually kicking the bucket... what i actually liked were the mosnter designs tho. having a whole bunch of different monsters roam around, be it the two rhodan variants, the evolution of godzilla, salunga or anguirus, i enjoyed them on the screen. the CG didnt look as bad as it could have... like those pesky weird flying drake things from the anime trilogy...
im not angry or mad i watched it, but in the end i know i wont really give it another whole watch soon...
also if anyone wants to know, the german dub is pretty good. shows often suffer from the same B cast everytime, but this one was dubbed actually pretty good

While I understand that there were very few kaiju versus kaiju moments in the show, that's still more than the original Godzilla had. Part of Godzilla's appeal to me is just the sheer diversity of the genres that the series covers. heck, even withing subsets like the monster verse, you look at Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla versus Kong (I haven't seen GxK Yet, but from the trailers it seems to lean even more towards the action and spectacle side of the franchise, and that's OK) And aside from Godzilla looking similar in both, they might as well be two separate incarnations of the character. And we've always had such crazy variations in tone, The first movie in the showa era was a dark and foreboding piece about the dangers of nuclear weapons and their repercussions, then latter we've got Godzilla fighting a golden three headed dragon and space chicken controlled by aliens from a tower that also looks like Godzilla. In the 2000s, Godzilla went from being a villain, a collection of angry spirits who wanted revenge for the horrors they experienced during WWII, to just three years later Godzilla is an anti-hero who saves humanity from more alien controlled monsters. Just recently there was Minus One and GxK, and all over the internet people were comparing the two as if we hadn't already had incredibly thought provoking, emotional Godzilla movies followed by big, explosive, action packed ones! Godzilla has had this diversity of subject matter from the start, and that's great!
I got so carried away going on that little rant that I almost forgot my main point. I didn't mind the lack of kaiju battles in this one, nor did I mind that there was a lot of science talk.

I didn’t hate Singular Point, but I can’t say I loved it, either. It wasn’t as bad as the anime trilogy, but it was definitely just as pretentious. They overcomplicated *everything* to one degree or another, and I kept being struck by the impression that they were just using words that made them *sound* smart, regardless of what they actually mean. (Archetype being a primary example.) This was a show that wanted to be “Shin Godzilla: The Series”, which wouldn’t have been a bad idea, as the characters were far more interesting and likable in Singular Point (not a challenge considering the non-characters of Shin, but that’s an entirely different conversation)… but they couldn’t leave well enough alone. “Let’s throw some classical literature references in there! Oh man, this freaking show. I was so excited because I LOVE Godzilla and Trigger Factory, but it was SUCH A LETDOWN.
Loved the character designs, and pretty much everything that Jet Jaguar did, but that's about it.
As for the story--it's an anime first and a Godzilla show last. They were SO friggin' proud of the sci-fi mystery plot they came up with that every time a monster showed up they were like, "Yeah that's cool and all, but about the 4th dimension...."
A lot of the sci-fi mumbo jumbo was hard to process on my first and only viewing (I watched it subbed when it first came out), but also a few of the big reveals were poorly set up. Just from the way they structured the plot I figured out immediately that A) the song that plays constantly is code for something important B) the red dust is archetype C) the person texting white-hair-boy is Mei D) 6 = 9?! Also, if he could see the future, why did Anguirus die? And if he 'allowed himself to die' then why was he even fighting back? I mean, I love when Godzilla movies have a science fiction-y plot, but it needs to be entertaining, and if I have to watch a youtube video explaining it to me then it's already more work than it's worth. Also, I'm an ACTUAL FREAKING SCIENTIST.
Also... I guess I just don't like the story itself. I don't like how Rodan is now "a rodan," and stuff like that. I can get behind monsters appearing from a different dimension, but I hate how they have the red dust absolutely everywhere, and the aforementioned song is just constantly being played, and they are continuously showing the nonsense scribbles that don't tell us anything. It's just annoying to watch.
*sigh*, anyway, I didn't like any of the kaiju designs, but good grief did Jet Jaguar look bad*ss with a spear. Godzilla looked really cool in the promo art, but that was a profile--when you see him rotated his jaw is just WAY TOO BIG it looks so dumb!
Crap... I guess I'm ranting more than I intended. I'm glad they made an honest attempt at making a deep plot, but it's a huge shame that they didn't make it FUN and ENTERTAINING as well.

Or and even worse take would be saying "your opinion isn't valid, because I think it's bad and only my opinion matters" which is pretty much the same thing as "I didn't get it, so it's bad".
