Southend Bus Trip

  • A locality just down the road that I really should visit more often, so expect one or two more of these videos once we're out of all this mess! A day trip on an Octopus day rover on Saturday 18th January in and around Southend-on-Sea, beginning with the unexpectedly scenic 26 from the Leigh-on-Sea Station up to Hadleigh Church, then the 1 through to Rayleigh Station, where I swap onto a 7 via Hockley through to Rochford. This is where I pick up the main aim, the wonderful twice-daily 60A service to Wallasea and Paglesham (the Paglesham section is more frequent, but Wallasea Island is only served once at around 9am and another time at around 2pm). From my two experiences, there are no regular afternoon passengers on a Saturday and only one on a weekday! The late afternoon then consists of a wonderful ride down the seafront on the lovely Route 9 to Shoeburyness East Beach, and a stroll along the seafront to the M.O.D. end of the beach, to have a little look at the disused tracks. Then, as it's getting dark, I hop back on a 9 to the ASDA where there is a delightful pub for an extended dinner break before finally heading home at around half past 7 on another Route 1 - half hourly by this time - with the same driver as earlier!

First time in a LONG TIME I’ve seen an enthusiast use the Octopus. Do forgot it’s an option not that it makes much difference for me with the Essex Saver being more value for money. Tbf had forgotten how scenic the southend area can be especially Shoebury considering it being well... Shoebury. Is a shame the MOD keep the gem of Southend to themselves in Foulness and it’s a shame they punt you off the 14 in Wakering before going onto the island but what can you do. Good video nonetheless.

For me, living in Upminster, it makes no sense to go up to Brentwood then the slog to Basildon on the 9 and 28 through to Southend, so if I want to do a Southend day, an Octopus works best! It's a right shame about Foulness - I understand the heritage centre is open on the first Sunday of the month in Summer or something along those lines, so it'd be great if they ran a bus then! Sadly not, but the rest of the Southend area is still rather nice, especially Wallasea on the 60A (which I'd definitely recommend if you haven't done it)!

Jezza M I’m usually too busy up the other end of the county and whenever I’m down there it’s normally only for the tridents and for what was left of the darts. Wallasea’s also tide dependent like Mersea is hence the lack of visits
