- 2015 VF Storm Head Unit replacement. Aliexpress Android HU to replace Mylink HU.
Apologies in advance for video staging - I'm not a videographer but hopeful some of the information is of use to those contemplating a similar HU change.
Dude, thank you so much for such a good video. I just wish you'd included more of which wire goes where, i cant see where youve connected all the wires too because the image isnt good enough, but its better than anything else ive found
Hi mate. You can't go wrong with the wiring as the plugs are individually shaped. As per the video one plug on the new harness didn't seem to be connected to anything, but everything works.
I appreciate it, i didnt realise the mylink unit was that big silver box thing, your video helped a lot and ill tell you what that plug is for later.. im speaking with the factory about it today
Oh nice looking forward to the update bytraper.
I've gone ahead and ordered an sma to fakra adapter cable to use the existing cars GPS aerial on the roof rather than the one that comes with the unit
Excited
@bytraper did you end up finding out where that plug connects to haha?
@@SmellyRoses Hi , do you have a picture or link to the adapter? I've found a few fakra with differing ends.
Update. A month or so in and no issues and still happy with the unit. I downloaded a new launcher (Agama) which is now working fine - had some issues initially as I tried to customise and got into a few problems with the launcher. I have purchased a Teyes unit for our Pajero Sport as I had heard great reviews on that unit.If I'm honest, the Aliexpress one in the VF was much easier to install and set up, seems to be a bit more intuitive in the way it works but has many similar features to the Teyes unit - so would definitely by the Ali express one again if I needed to. Mic quality seems to be ok - I would say about 7 out of 10 - so works ok and definetly audible. Never found our what that plug was for in the loom.
Hi mate. Does your unit beep like 10 times when it first turns on? If so did you find a way to turn it off?
No ours doesn't beep. Might have to look somewhere in settings to see what is triggering the sound.
@@mototune5797 mine does lmao
Looks great Don!
Please let us know of your feedback after playing with it a bit. Being Android I can imagine you can customise it quite a bit
Thanks for a brilliant video.
Did you retain your factory rear camera? The main harness didn’t have an RCA out for it to reconnect it back in. I’m a little stuck and would love any assistance from you or commenters.
What CANBUS car setting are you running? Couldn’t find the ChevSS in mine.
Hi Chris, on the video I show a plug and rca lead marked camera which uses the vehicles oem camera. Can't remember the canbus setting ( so long since I did the install) but wasn't to hard to find the right one from memory.
Thanks for the video mate. The only thing i cant get to work is the reverse camera
manual?
@@Ryan-qw1vt yes. I had to buy a reverse camera retention harness
@@benhosking963 could you send me the link to what you purchased? TIA
Hey long shot but just wondering if anyone that has one of these has had an issue with the WiFi? When i try and toggle it on it's like it tries to for 15 or so seconds then goes back into the off position. Everything else works perfectly
I saw on another video of this same unit that there is support for heated seats, so I wonder if the extra plug is for that?
Could be. Unit still performing well. Changeover has been a good investment and keeps the VF current compared to the MyLink system which is now passed its sell buy date.
Where’s the subwoofer located in the VF storm sedans? I can’t find the bugger
Hey thanks for the vid. Bought one. How do you find the mic? I can’t get good quality phone calls with the mic they included
Mic is adequate but not great. You could try not using the external mic and just using the mic in the head unit. Being right hand drive, the mic is on the LHS of the head unit and so may not be great. Having the external supplied mic plugged in may be struggling with the on board mic. I use the external mic and as I say, calls are passable.
I'm sure you could order a new mic online for a few dollars that would improve the sound quality
Hey mate how you install the reverse camera . Thanks
Did you have any issues installing the vents onto the new unit? There is no screw hole for the top of the vent and the bottom screw closest to the unit is too close to get tye screw in.
Yes, I think I just ran with 3 screws. No vibration or performance issues.
I had the same problem with the top screw, I think it’s because the screen is bigger and there’s no room for it( I sawed off the vent plastic because it was getting in the way). As for getting the ‘hard to reach’ screw in… you can remove the new screen with 4 silver screws then put the vent in then put the new screen back in.
Hi Don, now that you've installed this unit, does the car still retain the front and rear parking sensors and reverse camera?
Yes all working as per before.
@@doncharles9298 hi done. Do you have any issue with your reverse camera very slightly flickering?
Hi mate, no issues with the reverse camera operation. All working well.
@@doncharles9298thanks for the reply! My stock camera is flickering with this unit.
im guessing the big face unit has to come out too
Don, what unit exactly did you get there are more than one available from a few sellers. whats it like 1 year on? any regrets ?
I went with an ali express unit. Have had the unit for a while an no regrets. The mylink unit was outdated in not being able to interface with Android devices and no maps etc. Unit has performed well and suits our needs. I have seen feedback around the fact the heating controls are no longer present - I actually think it looks much cleaner with fewer knobs and all features function as advertised. I think there are many different branded units out there but I think some come from the same factory. I even installed a Teyes unit in my Pajero Sport but had issues with the unit and returned it (customer service was good). So no regrets with moving on from Mylink.
@@doncharles9298 I have a similar unit in my VE and even had one in my old VS commodore, but both cars had way less integration than mylink, there are so many options out there as you said, and all report to lose some factory features. great vid, but would defiantly love to see more of the units specs (android version cpu ram ect)
whats the sound quality and low level volume like? this is my pet hate about the one in my VE on vol 1 sitting in a carpark its to loud, and the quality isnt what it would be from a branded deck (kenwood alipne ect)
Hows the fm reception? Is it ad good as original?
Both FM and AM reception fine. I installed a Teyes unit into my other car but had to pull it out as AM reception did not perform well at all.
lol aliexpress has a better headunit than a commodore XD what a surprise. The stock maestro in the VTs are shockingly cheap.
