You're so right about make-up snobbery...especially now with the huge resumed interest in make-up. Make-up culture has become less and less about exchanging tips and promiting beauty in all forms and more about what products are "in" to use (and they are usually the expensive ones being pushed onto consumers by "bloggers"). But I love that you're so humble and down to earth about it and it IS true that while you can still achieve great looks using drugstore products there are still some things that are better to splurge on because of quality.
I love that you talk about IMPORTANT things like this. It's so helpful to those just starting out with makeup, and you're so helpful in telling viewers how to spot cheap items and things that aren't worth the cost. I wish there were more gurus that talk about these topics.
When you mentioned using lipstick for cream blush it brought back memories, my mom always used to dot her cheeks with her lipstick for her blush and it actually looked really nice.
Hi Wayne, just came across to this video... I love it!! But just curious, would you still give the same advice today, maybe can you do an update video on this? Many thanks!!
Wayne, I want to thank you. Your are one of the only makeup artist on UA-cam that is not of color but include information for people of color in your video. You address makeup for all ranges of skin tones that the majority of people don't. Thanks again!
All of my makeup and tools inexpensive and I think I do a good job with my makeup. I see so many people spend so much on products and tools and their makeup still looks a mess. It's about technique and skill.
maybe, I did a great job with cheap makeup before, but damn if you have the skill and use high end it will be amazing. like he says mascaras and lipsticks can be cheap and amazing. but I do love NARS blushes and they will last me a lifetime.
Absolutely! Most of my lipsticks are drugstore. I do have some high end stuff but in my opinion you should spend on your base (primer, foundation, concealer) and after that just save. :)
HI Wayne Can you please do a what's your opinion of a beginners makeup essential's!! I thinking a lot of people would enjoy this video. Like what would you suggest that beginners should have based on this video save/spend :)
You're so down to earth - I love it! Thanks for not being all like "buy the most expensive".. Artists like Tanya burr make you feel bad about not getting all MAC. I don't think mac is as amazing as people make out. I think it looks gorgeous but it's so heavy and for the studio IMO.
Janelle fairlamb I agree. In fact, I should have implied I just meant the foundations on myself. I love their eyeshadows, pigments, blushes, brushes etc.
*This* is why I appreciate Wayne’s advice so much! He’s right, once it’s on your face, no one will know who made the shadows. I love the video where he discusses ELF shadows. He said as long as you use a good primer, ELF is as good as the Chanelle shadows. Thank you for keeping it real Wayne!!
i appreciate how honest you are...you have lots of great makeup and expensive makeup yet you are honest and i respect that. expensive doesn't always mean the best. Thank you.
YES! Thank you! I think everyone should definitely spend more when it comes to foundation. There are some stand out drugstore foundations, but seriously, it's the base for the entire look! SPEND IT GIRL!
I LOVE to hear you talk. The way you talk gives me life. And I love how you're not like other people. Now in the makeup world is so materialistic and showing off your expensive makeup.
As a boy, i wear so much less makeup than a girl in terms of application/types, like i obviously don't wear lip/eye makeup or blusher so i tend to splash out on everything, but i agree with everything you've said, for lip/eye makeup there's usually a dupe for almost everything high end, but base products imo are worth the investment, my foundations, bronzer and concealer last me over a year so i justify it as about 10£ a month O:) Merry Christmas fellow goss fans i hope you all got some lovely beauty gifts. I got a cheek brush from your collection for my Mum she loves it! :D x
I absolutely love you!!!...I'm a woman of color and what I love about your channel the most is that you don't just stick to doing hands on makeup applications like most of the tutorials you find on UA-cam but you give practical tips that actually makes your makeup look better!Thank You!!!!Forever a FAN:-)
Some recommendations for beginners: Rimmel do the best lip liners in my opinion, I've tried high end such as motives, and they don't last as long. L'Oréal do the best mascaras. Nyx great for lipstick/gloss Rimmel stay matte powder is great Eyeshadow, there isn't really any decent ones in British drugstore, I suppose there is sleek though, urban decay all the way! Eyeliner all drugstore ones do good eyeliners to be honest
Nars blushes make me go weak at the knees. And I'm a fool in love with finishing powders, especially Guerlain and Hourglass. Can happiness come in a little silver tin? Pretty sure it can. Merry Christmas, Wayne! Xx
100% agree! I've been doing this for ages. Splurging on key items for colour pay off and saving on mascara etc. Provided that your mascara has a good brush, you'll get a good result. Basically, if it looks good and suits you, then just go for it. I would also splurge on nail varnish but NOT on Chanel. Leighton Denny, OPI and a Seche Vite top coat is the way forward. QVC do sets to make a lot of the nail paints affordable, so it's not too much of a pinch.
And this why I'm absolutely addicted to your videos - these fabulous tips on where to really splurge and/or save put a huge smile on my face! Love your channel, Wayne! 👍👍👍
I absolutely agree w everything you said, nice to see your logic and practicality in regards to what items to spend on I rarely by high end make up anymore. Ive worked in the cosmetic and fragrance industry and the markup is huge. Great advice! PS I love your vids and warm personality, just subscribed this wk. :)
omg, so true about the mascara and so glad you mention this straight off the bat! My fave mascara is by NYC and is only like $2 and is made in the UK. I like it even better than more expensive mascaras (I get free samples from brands like UD and Clinique). At $2 I don't have to cry every time I toss one and open a new one.
About the pencils.... I know! Right? It doesn't matter if they're $3 or $30, seems like all my eye and lip pencils are made in Germany. I'm picturing this one huge factory making them for every cosmetic brand in the world.
Desktop Kitty And the softest eyeliner I have ever seen is the ScandalEyes eyeliner. I gave them as part of everyone's Xmas gifts last year and all my girlfriends were thrilled with them. Only a couple dollars, and it doesn't break my heart when I lose one. (I tend to lose eyeliners and lip liners all the time, for some reason)
I HATE makeup snobbery. -_- I can't even express how much lol. I have & use both high end and drugstore products. I have some drugstore items that perform better than the high end items & vice versa. I also have some high end products that are complete crap. Price doesn't make a product better, or crappy. I also hate when people are so snobby with their makeup they only use one brand. It's SOOOO limiting. There's so many amazing products out there from so many different brands. I song see why people would limit themselves with makeup. Thanks for sharing! This was very informative :)
You are so well spoken and I really trust everything you say in your videos. Keep on doing what you're doing, you're helping so many people feel beautiful!
Totally agree; drugstore foundation just doesn't cut it for me. I have bought high end foundation for years and have found, like you say, it lasts for ages. Such a great video, great to hear that some cheaper products are worthwhile, I find some magazines tend to focus on brand name make-up which sucks when I'm a bit skint. That's why I love Boots, a mixture of drugstore and higher end products. Great video!
I absolutely adore you, Wayne. I'm glad we see almost precisely eye to eye on this subject, because it's something I argue about a lot with friends. The only area where I differ is on lips. I will almost always spend on lip colors! It's just that I prefer to have a color that will either stay on all day or that looks pretty if I have to reapply it after leaving the house. It might be a different story if I changed up my lip color a lot, but I tend to stick to the same handful of shades constantly while I play a lot more with my eyes.
I definetely agree with you. I spend more on my foundation (Lancome), bronzer (Estee Laudeer), basic lipsticks (YSL, Lancome) and mascara (because I love the brush!!). But other things, like eyeliners and eyeshadows, lipglosses, and even blushes, there are tons of good, cheap products !
Great video. I WANT to spend more on mascara, as I am always on the hunt for the PERFECT one, but my eyelashes are very long naturally and I did feel I was just wasting money. Since saving up and upgrading my foundation and blush, I've noticed a massive difference.
Great advice as always Wayne! I love to find ways to multi-task makeup. My newest is the Makeup Revolution Iconic Dreams palette. Matte YELLOW doubles as a redness correcting finishing powder, Matte BROWN works as a bronzer and 4 of the shimmer shades can be used as highlighters anywhere on the face. All their formulas are safe for sensitive skin, and their prices and quality can't be beat.
I usually spend money on eyeshadow palettes. It's like an addiction. Also the quality is so much better. Eyelash curlers have to be good quality. The cheap ones do nothing. Highlighters and concealer ... Buy the high end ones, they are way better.
+Ginette Hebert I'm a little bit addicted to eyeshadow palettes too, do you know the brand Zoeva? I have 2 palettes from Zoeva and I love them, great pigmentation and awesome colors and they cost around 20 bucks.
Thank you! QUESTION: I'm also curious about if you would recommend spending the money on high end concealers. My under-eye dark circles are my main problem and I am on a SUPER tight budget and have never been able to really spend what I would like on makeup. But does high end really make a big difference with concealers? Any recommended brands? You are my fav. Thank you so much. :)
i think he had mentionned in some video to use mac full coverage in ur undereye shade bcz u know the mac studio finish concealer is the same product as in the full coverage mac foundation but the foundation is without spf (which is better bcz i have the concealer and since it has spf it looks whitish with flash in pics ugh)so u get a concelar that will last u forever u r invisting in a good long term product while creamy concealers really finish soo fast and the mac studio finish will honestly last you a looot of time bcz u only use a tiiiny bit and its enough(its concentrated) add me on facebook if u didnt get what i mean bcz i really dont think i explained well(fb: "scarlet hind" and IG its "confidentialscarlet")
Holly den Ouden Hi holly Ive had the same problem. I used to use the Maybelline conceler but it only made my face look ashy. What I recomend i to use mac pro long where conceler it is amaing and honestly it lasts up to 10 hours. but you have to prime your under eye before
Thanks Wayne! very helpful. I'm definitely no makeup snob (can't afford to be!) Australia has some amazing affordable 'drugstore' brands as well as the big American ones like Maybelline, L'Oreal, Covergirl etc. I own mostly drugstore makeup, but treat myself to high-end sometimes too. I only own 1 YSL lipstick and I treasure it (the gold packaging looks good on my dressing table too) :)
Wait I'm totally lost what is makeup today Paris? I've never heard of that brand would you please do a review on there makeup and how to purchase it ? Thank you!!!:)
I've got a few items from Makeup Geek and they are beautiful, they're equal to MAC & Urban Decay I reckon, also great gel eyeliner & just came out with pigments not long ago which are gorgeous. Aroud easter I think she's coming out with blushes and I seen the prototype pictures on marlena's website. They are well worth the money and her website has a wealth of information and pictures you'll love them. I might look into the Atelier because he certainly has mentioned them a lot of times favourably. Hopefully they ship to Australia. Let me know what you get from MUG as I'm eventually want her whole collection of colours lol :)♥
I bought two of the rainbow pans in a purple and in brownish taupe colour but need to go back into inglot to check out their blush. They are lovely and I think great for the price but really do need to explore it more. I was surprised to learn we had a store close to me which is kind of exciting:)♥
I will check out the freedom system. Most of my purchases are from America because they are way cheaper than Astralian prices but yeah it is pretty good to be close to all these shops, but then there is never any quite time, it is always noisy lol
Hi Wayne.. what do you think of makeup geek eyeshadows? Have u tried them out? Id really appreciate a review on these if u have. Thank you very much :)
What is your personal opinion on Too Faced makeup products? I noticed you haven't mentioned the company, and was just wondering if I'm wasting my money buying from Too Faced
I have the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette and honestly I've found it to be extremely average quality. It's such a raved about product (most likely due to packaging & the chocolate scent rather than the actual eyeshadows!) I wouldn't recommend.
And I thought I am retarded thinking that "blush? why don't just use pink/coral/orange matte eyeshadows??" all this time! Thank you for this video, Wayne. I want to know your opinion for lip glosses and concealers. Should we spend or save? Oh, and Merry Christmas! :)
100% agree with everything you said! I told lots of people my philosophy on what/when you should spend on makeup and it's true and I've known it ever since I started wearing makeup in my teens. Oh mascara!
Don't agree with cheaper lipsticks. Crap staying power and who has the time to apply lipstick every ten minutes, not forgetting re-application uses product up very quickly, so buying more and spending more in the long run. Sorry Wayne! Yes deffo splurge on a good foundation though, true. Oh and Guerlain do the best bronzers out there too. You love Bobbi Brown !!!!!
I think he's saying it because he does know of good cheaper lipsticks, like if you watch his video on Maybelline products, you can see him talk about those there.
Thanks Wayne! You made me feel good. I never use eyebrow pencils but a Revlon eyeshadow with a stencil. My friends think I'm crazy but it works for me. Perfect matching brows the same size!
In this video he mentions: MAC full coverage foundation RCMA foundation Hourglass Kett Makeup Atelier Paris (he loves this one) And he also has spoken a lot about Ellis Faas foundation in other videos :) Cheers x
Debbie George I suppose it’s the same rule as for eyeshadows, but eyeshadows can work well as highlighters too. Swatch first to see if it’s the right level of shimmer/glow.
You dont have to buy anything or watch this video. I don't think he meant any of that in the context in which you are taking it? I think this was great advice, as he couldve plugged in a whole bunch of random companies, and try to make a buck, and he didnt.
I think he was giving us great advice!..I would like to save my pennies or dollars and buy his brushes..I bet they are wonderful!! I think you took me wrong..no harm was meant..I love Mr Wayne's video;s,,
MrsLoretta Hey Mrs.Loretta! My apologies, I may have taken your comment out of context my self! Thanks for clearing that up! :) I love Wayne too! He is one of the very few MUA out there that actually tells it how it is!
Best. Vid. Ever! Thank you for your expertise! Lipstick as cream blush and pencils from the same factories BLOWS MY MIND and makes me feel smarter than all the snobs.
I don't use eyeshadow and bronzer, but as for the other products I totally agree! A good foundation is the key. I used to wear only drugstore products until I discovered Estee Lauder foundation. What a change for my oily skin!
Omg you're the best. I totally agree with all that. You are officially my fave makeup artist. So real and knowledgeable, and willing to share all your secrets. Thank you!
Funny you mention eye brow make up! I've always used a matt brown eye shadow that matches my brows and an angled brush. Comb them up and use a tad hair spray on my spoolie to set them. I use the elf duo eye shadow pan. Also, been using my lip product for years on my cheeks in a pinch. Usually, when I'm going out and need to keep my clutch lighly equipt with touch up cosmetics. Generally, the only make up in my handbag or clutch IS my lipstick
Thanks again for the excellent advice. For the person who mentioned brushes. ..WRONG! !! Good tools are your best friend. Wayne's line of brushes surpasses anything out there for quality and versatility. Definitely a SPEND! Love ya Wayne! Have a great holiday.
I agree with all of your advice here but absolutely LOVE Benefit's They're real mascara. It is $23 in the US. I bought some for a friend last week and she loves it!
I love to hear him talk
+Zenobia McRae so true.
I know right, when he talks you better be listening 👂🏻
+Zenobia McRae Yeah really. His accent is beautiful.
he should read audio books
Me too!
Cringe Later well said!

Wayne Goss and Lisa Eldgridge are my favourite makeup artists on youtube ! I've learnt so much from them
I like that he considers women of color and dark skinned women in his advice. Thank you!
Thank you doll for mentioning women of color. I'm loving you!
Agree.
He mentions women of color in most videos :) watch the rest! he is great, gives amazing tips!
When you mentioned using lipstick for cream blush it brought back memories, my mom always used to dot her cheeks with her lipstick for her blush and it actually looked really nice.
mine too
It's like getting advice from my dad :)
thanks dad

Nice comment

Hi Wayne, just came across to this video... I love it!! But just curious, would you still give the same advice today, maybe can you do an update video on this? Many thanks!!
OMG! I was thinking the same thing! Waaaaayne, do an update:-)
yea good idea!
Why would he not?
It would be interesting to here an update on the brands that you recommend for each item of makeup
Wayne, I want to thank you. Your are one of the only makeup artist on UA-cam that is not of color but include information for people of color in your video. You address makeup for all ranges of skin tones that the majority of people don't. Thanks again!
I love how genuine and authentic you are with your tips and suggestions to us viewers. You are the best Wayne!
All of my makeup and tools inexpensive and I think I do a good job with my makeup. I see so many people spend so much on products and tools and their makeup still looks a mess. It's about technique and skill.
Of course, BUT you can do a lot more with good brushes and shit makeup than vice versa. But of course it's about technique and skill aswell :D
maybe, I did a great job with cheap makeup before, but damn if you have the skill and use high end it will be amazing. like he says mascaras and lipsticks can be cheap and amazing. but I do love NARS blushes and they will last me a lifetime.
Absolutely! Most of my lipsticks are drugstore. I do have some high end stuff but in my opinion you should spend on your base (primer, foundation, concealer) and after that just save. :)
This1Jen a little late to this debate, but I'm learning a good toner is also a worthy investment.
HI Wayne Can you please do a what's your opinion of a beginners makeup essential's!! I thinking a lot of people would enjoy this video. Like what would you suggest that beginners should have based on this video save/spend :)
Yes, please do! Dreaming of the day when I can splurge on your makeup brushes!
Mumford Fan that
I only trust Wayne Goss's word. Period!
Period
You're so down to earth - I love it! Thanks for not being all like "buy the most expensive".. Artists like Tanya burr make you feel bad about not getting all MAC. I don't think mac is as amazing as people make out. I think it looks gorgeous but it's so heavy and for the studio IMO.
It really depends on what you are buying. MAC does have some fantastic products.
Janelle fairlamb I agree. In fact, I should have implied I just meant the foundations on myself. I love their eyeshadows, pigments, blushes, brushes etc.
I'm sure her intention is not to make you feel bad, her preference for products is her opinion - just as his are opinionated.
*This* is why I appreciate Wayne’s advice so much! He’s right, once it’s on your face, no one will know who made the shadows. I love the video where he discusses ELF shadows. He said as long as you use a good primer, ELF is as good as the Chanelle shadows. Thank you for keeping it real Wayne!!
you know how people always ask what ia your holy grail product? your channel is holy grail for my beauty haha
I totally agree. I call him my guy when I'm talking to my daughter. 😂
i appreciate how honest you are...you have lots of great makeup and expensive makeup yet you are honest and i respect that. expensive doesn't always mean the best. Thank you.

I love how u included WOC! Foundations for women of color sometimes are too red & not the color in the bottle.
And this why I'm absolutely addicted to your videos - these fabulous tips on where to really splurge and/or save put a huge smile on my face! Love your channel, Wayne! 👍👍👍
I absolutely agree w everything you said, nice to see your logic and practicality in regards to what items to spend on
I rarely by high end make up anymore. Ive worked in the cosmetic and fragrance industry and the markup is huge.
Great advice!
PS I love your vids and warm personality, just subscribed this wk. :)
Love your personality and corkiness. You do not ramble like so many you tubers! Very informational. Thanks for the great video!

Brilliant information, especially the lipstick that doubles as cream blush!
Illamasqua blusher! The best! Also Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation!

I always use eyeshadow in my brows. Works great for me. I also use lipstick as a cream blush.
Miss these type of videos from you; love your work, have been following you since 2011
a darker powder foundation works great as a bronzer without the orange hue. i use the bare minerals in W40 golden dark
Gosh I love this vid, it's so helpful, especially for us beginners. Thanks!
You are so well spoken and I really trust everything you say in your videos. Keep on doing what you're doing, you're helping so many people feel beautiful!
Possibly the most useful video a makeup gurucan make. Thank you!
Love you Wayne Goss. I really trust and appreciate your honest opinions.
that was very very honest...fantastic...thank you...

I love you honesty Wayne... :)
Wayne I have always been brand loyal I just love my Estée Lauder ! I have so much I hate to say but I love it !
Adding this to my favs. You gave great advice and you included all skin tones. You rock! Merry Christmas :-)
Great video. I WANT to spend more on mascara, as I am always on the hunt for the PERFECT one, but my eyelashes are very long naturally and I did feel I was just wasting money. Since saving up and upgrading my foundation and blush, I've noticed a massive difference.
Love you so much, you just give the best advice.
This is really helpful. I'm in the process of putting together a makeup kit so it's really useful to hear a pro's opinion 👏🏻
Concealer?? Hmmmm I'd say if you have bad skin or bad dark circles spend! Otherwise the fit me concealer and age rewind are super good.
If you haven't used Makeup geek or Inglot, I really recommend them. So affordable and so pigmented and creamy.
+Ginette Hebert I'm a little bit addicted to eyeshadow palettes too, do you know the brand Zoeva? I have 2 palettes from Zoeva and I love them, great pigmentation and awesome colors and they cost around 20 bucks.

Ginette Hebert what eyelash curlers do you recommend?
i will replay this video over and over again! lol
Thank you!

Holly den Ouden I would suggest trying a corrector to cancel out the darkness then your foundation and you may not even need concealer.
Love the Bristolian accent 😊

Yeah I'm trying to find it but nothing is coming up and there isn't a link. Does anyone know what brand this actually is?
It is confusing and I really want to know what the company is. Maybe if we keep posting to this video he will give us the link :)♥
Such a valuable advice. Definitely spend on foundations and powders and save on lipstick, blusher and liners. Thanks Wayne!
Hi Wayne.. what do you think of makeup geek eyeshadows? Have u tried them out? Id really appreciate a review on these if u have. Thank you very much :)
You're humor on all your videos kills me! Too funny! Thanks for the tips, very practical and helpful :)
Everyone should watch this !!
I love how genuine you are!
Thank you for great tips
Thanks so much. You have saved me from spending a ton of money in Sephora.
One of the most useful videos this year. Thanks Wayne.
+Angel Mills i'd recommend too face as a general brand if looking for a bronzer, or physicians formula
I LOVE too faced products! The eyeshadows are great pigmentation! And the melted lipsticks are great!
honestly my fave makeup personality to watch, straight to the point, very helpful and objective and wise :)
I can't use eyeshadow in my eyebrows because they're so sparse and missing :( excellent video! Xo
wet your brush a bit before you dip it into the eye shadow :)
what a brilliant idea, i can't believe I never thought of this! thankyou so much hun :)
anytime! glad I could help! :)
Thank you thank you thank you for this video I completely agree but sometimes I tend to forget, & Merry Christmas
NYX has really good lipsticks that really do stay on :)
Thanks Wayne! You made me feel good. I never use eyebrow pencils but a Revlon eyeshadow with a stencil. My friends think I'm crazy but it works for me. Perfect matching brows the same size!
I love you
What did he say the for brand for foundation? Sorry, it's that I couldn't quite catch it with your accent...
In this video he mentions:
MAC full coverage foundation
RCMA foundation
Hourglass
Kett
Makeup Atelier Paris (he loves this one)
And he also has spoken a lot about Ellis Faas foundation in other videos :)
Cheers x
Great Video...I totally agree with you...
Wayne, you forgot highlighters.
Debbie George I suppose it’s the same rule as for eyeshadows, but eyeshadows can work well as highlighters too. Swatch first to see if it’s the right level of shimmer/glow.
Thank you for the eyeliner tip! Cant believe high and low end is basically the same!
Is this video sped up..? You seem really sporadic and your voice seems higher, like when you fast-forward a video tape.
Thank You Wayne for confirming that I am spending just the way I need to. XOXO!!!!
Save our pennies so we can buy your brushes...Yea
sorry Loretta but i dont think mr Wayne would be as sadistic and hope that simple people like you and me would spend our last pennies on his brush kit
Omg I totally read your comment as: shave our penises.
Best. Vid. Ever! Thank you for your expertise! Lipstick as cream blush and pencils from the same factories BLOWS MY MIND and makes me feel smarter than all the snobs.
Sleek has a great Bronzer (only tried one) and it's not too orange and it looks natural even on my super pale skin!
Thank you for this video and for your honest opinion, very much appreciated. Hugs to you.
This is great advise, very helpful and accurate.
I don't use eyeshadow and bronzer, but as for the other products I totally agree! A good foundation is the key. I used to wear only drugstore products until I discovered Estee Lauder foundation. What a change for my oily skin!
Love how you are so simple and down to earth! Always giving us top tips!
I always listen and respect your opinion. Great advice and thanks
LOVED your suggestion to warm hard eyeliners with a lighter! Tried it and it worked great on some cheap liners that I had! Thanks Wayne!!!!
Thank you Wayne! Always the voice of reason...Love it!
Thank you! Best wishes for love and happiness in the New Year!
your best video, for sure. thank you
Thanks again for the excellent advice.
