- A portable generator will burn oil if the crankcase was overfilled with oil, it has the incorrect oil, the air filter is clogged, the piston rings are worn or damaged, the cylinder wall is scored or damaged, a blown head gasket, a bad valve stem seal, a clogged crankcase vent tube, or excessive use over the years.

Very informative video learned alot here. I am not a mechanic so whilst I am unable to figure exact cause from your 8 reasons I do understand that one of these issues is my cause. It' a Honda EM2500x generator. It starts very good no issues with power or anything else but everytime I run for about at least 8 hours I have to at least 4 cups of oil with my small measuring cup, lets say 20% on the deep stick level. For 6 hours of use at least 50% oil level on the deep stick and I think for about 4 hours not much difference or minor. So it really depends on the length of time I run the generator. I am using 10W-30 manufacture recommended when new. A great video! Thank you.
Q
Perfect explanation.
Excellent no nonsense video. Thank you!
Great info! Thanks
Thanks very much. Info is very handful
Thank you!
Great vid! But please help! Does the valve stem seal go on both valves or exhaust or intake..you speak on your vid in plural but point to intake?
What a great job you've done. Thank you
:)
Thanks
Thanks for the nice vid
What about a clogged exhaust? It doesn't seem like exhaust is blowing out strong. The spark screen was filthy and clogged and i cleaned it but could the exhaust have build up gunk in it?
Nice
So, how do test it to see which one of the eight possibilities it is? Help....
So how can I find out what one is going on with my generator? And how can I fix it? I believe my problem is #5 or #7
Hi is it the same with a Ryobi generator
My friend. My generator smokes heavy white smoke only for about the first 30 seconds of running. After the first 30 seconds it is perfect. What do you think it can be? It seems to me like the longer I let it sit before starting it it smokes even sicker. For example if I start it and then turn it off and then started again 10 minutes later it won’t smoke at all. But if I start it and then wait 24 hours it’s smokes.
During hot and cold weather? Could be collected condensation from being hot and cooling down overnight. My GX160 did that in the winter. Summer? Hardly at all.
Please sir make a video on”causes of generator overheating problems and solutions”thanks
Nice one 👍
But I notice my oil only last 6 days in my generator and always switch off by it's self when using it.. Then I notice it was the oil,so I have to add up oil again.. please what might be the cause ?
Watch the video well
That should be the rings and make sure you re not using it more than 6 hours in a row
Thank you can you tell me a great deal about my generator
I just bought new sportsman 4000. I hook up 30 amp RV online wal mart delivery to my home. Anyway I hook up 30 amp pop up camper trailer to run air conditioner. About 6 hrs later generator shutdown itself only 1/2 left fuel and oil sensor shutdown because no oil left. Why that new generator dripping oil? What going to do with generator?
You are exactly have that same type of generator an does the same thing I do run it for 8 hours an yes have to keep adding oil every 8 hours if not it shuts down I guess now that's why they put those oil sensors on generators now because they know you have to keep oil in it every once in awhile that's why to save their asses why we can run our vehicles all day an don't have to add oil like that all to make money
The Generac manual says you have to check the oil daily during extended outages. That is absurd. If the piston and rings are built to spec for the cylinder size, there will be no burning of oil.
Who the hell wants to walk outside daily in -5 degree winters to check the oil when they lose power for a few days.
There are no well engineered engines that burn oil daily, assuming the proper oil is used, and the filter is clean.
Right? I have a VW 2.0 SOHC(CBPA) and the oil level doesn't move at all between 10k mile oil changes per manufacturer spec. It's not unreasonable to expect minimal or no oil burning if it's well maintained.
And have change the piston but still drying oil out.
My generator 2000 watt predator is leaking oil from the muffler and blue smoke thanks
so do we just pour out the excess oil and everything is fixed?
cool, a guy who knows what he is talking about....i'm still trying to find a manual for my generator 180A75-1A and it might as well be a martian repair manual. because this does'nt exist. i've spent a lot of days trying to find the homelite manual but apparently, it never had an issue ( like blowing blue smoke to make the forest look like it was on fire.) so looking for the manual i actually got a book that was 2 pages long and was just a lame patts list that didn't even show the carburator or the screnn under the tank. its like looking for the holy grail, with no results. so if anyone reading this can find me a manual (is that the right spelling?) i would sing your name in prayses (once again i don't know how the correct spelling is).....sitting in a defeated position...... waiting for the holy grail.......or do i just admite( shit, my btrain is so tired, that i can't spell admite lol ) defeat? and send this generator to an EXPERT?? i don't want to give up the ghost......
I don't know if you were able to find your manual, but if you didn't you can try: ecrater.com and manuals.homelite.com too. Good luck.
How to fix #1?
get into your time machine, go back in time to when you last filled the oil and only put the correct amount needed, then come back to present day and voila!
Level the engine and check oil level
I just cut the dip stick off flush
Don’t need it, fill tell it runs out 😊😊
My fireman generator is oil com out of carburetor
My predator starts smoking after I plug in my 1500 watt steamer. It can’t exceed 1500 !!
Oil level is high. Oil is thin or lighter weight. Piston rings or cylinder walls is damaged. Rings shouldn't be aligned. Rings should be placed at 12,3,9. Head gas kit damaged. Damaged rubber valve seal. Dirty air filter. Aging of generator.
i call BS on the hours there sapose to last i got 6000 hr still goin finean my other one has 4600hr on it still runnig fine.
