Ironically, the US Bank I have worked for since 2018 (middle management) is strongly considering new remote policies for next month, 75% of the employees may soon be able to work remotely with very few limitations. My fingers are crossed. My first time we had to fly to gualquil do to a volcano erupting near Quito. My wife had to fly through texas due to a passport issue. I got to the airport during remodeling, so I was their alone, did not speak a word of spanish with my big white cat ¨Scout¨ the young police kept coming over to peek at what I had in the cage, and laughing. After a bit this fat old guard that had the only chair in the place could not resist, he came over to look, laughed his arse off, got the cat some water and insisted I take his chair. God I loved that cat. Sir Scout is buried in Sangolqui Ecuador, R.I.P.

Hi sir!! If you are planning on selling your house, you have to know that here in Ecuador we have a type of like small banks that are called “cooperativas” that would be in English, cooperatives. They are like small banks. Some of them can pay you from 8,5% to 10% interest rate per year on a fixed-term deposit, and they can pay you the total of the interest every month like a salary, and on US dollars. $50k could be like 9%, $100k 9,5%, and $200k+ 10%. There’s no other country in the world that has these interest rates for fixed-term deposits on US dollars. It sounds crazy. The largest cooperative in Ecuador is called JEP and it’s the third biggest cooperative in Latam. They pay you 8,5%. Alianza Del Valle is like fifth in Ecuador and they pay you 10%, so you can choose. The total interest from fixed-term deposits is free of taxes in Ecuador. They are not considered a source of income. If you have enough money you can live here without the need to work :)

I have always liked the stock market and although I'm killing it right now (retired and my net worth now is what our net worth was before my ex divorced me in 2014), October has historically been the month for the markets to take a huge plunge. I've moved a lot out of equities and I should be OK but, for the US and most of the people in it, I see lots of pain. Everybody and the government is spending money they'll never have and sometime that has to stop. It's not like we're all on the same team, we'll rally together and get through the tough time. Hi Amelia and JP! I found you guys a few weeks ago and I'm entranced by your videos! So fun and entertaining, and definitely helping my wanderlust! Quick question - which video is the one about making money online? I didn't see a link but it may have gotten buried in the comments. Thanks!

Yes, the pandemic has opened up many more career opportunities for virtual workers, but primarily in some tech, teaching and consulting fields. There are substantial cost savings to employers/businesses and employees/contractors/students also save a lot of time, money and hassles of daily commuting. However, from dentists to carpenters to farmers to factory workers to nurses, most people cannot do their jobs full time from remote locations and thus unable to relocate to low-cost places like Ecuador.

Another great video!! The wife and I are really considering retiring early and becoming an expat. Been researching Manta quite a bit - one thing - and this may be a good video topic - earthquakes? I see where people often report tremors and there was a big one a fee years ago. Do you think it's something to consider? Thank you for everything you do!!!

Another great vlog, thanks ! I was wondering about still filing taxes yearly in the US....are you able to take care of taxes and other items attached to being a US citizen online ? How do you manage very important mailings if no longer have resident address back in US ? I think you have mentioned before there is no postal delivery in Ecuador ?

this was an awesome message and my ex has been trying to get me to move to Ecuador......I resist because I have so much desire to see my children's children and my great grandchildren while they are young. Never know when Ecuador will call my name if ever. I also have a great relationship here that I want to stay in touch with so not sure I will ever decide to leave USA. But thanks for this video and caring about sharing your info with others. Peace and blessings!

Just want you to know that I think you guys are awesome! You are living the life I want to live. I am Ecuadorean but I grew up in the states amd I currently live in Miami. The grind in America at times can be overwhelming and I hate the hamster wheel that has me trapped. I'm a medical sales rep and self employed. I'm not sure I can take those skills to Ecuador. So I do think of "reinventing " myself. "What business can I afford to begin there" is always the question for me. I plan on moving down in a few years but everyday it seems that I should be making that move today. My goal is to having my own place so that I don't need to have to worry about a monthly rent. Anyway just wanted to thank you both for the inspiration you give me to make my move. God bless you both and thanks again.

We have spent some time in Ecuador. We love it. We did not find cost of living particularly low. We were not paying rent. We were visiting. We found eating out, groceries, hardware, and things like that just as expensive. Cars are more. I know you don’t have one. Appliance and electronics are more. Just asking.

Ellen: We lived in Costa Rica for 5 years. Anything IMPORTED will cost MORE, thanks to transportation and import duty (100% on cars). If you eat where the locals eat, buy veggies & fruit at the farmers' market, and live in a modest home - you SHOULD save a LOT of $$$ compared to the USA. This assumes that you speak Spanish - if you DON'T, I would NOT recommend a move.

My understanding is that you can’t make contributions to your retirement accounts while abroad. My wife and I lived in London and were both paid by US companies (paid into our US bank account). We were not allowed to make contributions during that time. Looking around the US expat forums and that’s a consistent theme. Can you address if this is different for US/Ecuador?
You mentioned owing US taxes every year and I know this situation well. A video addressing your yearly tax situation between the US and Ecuador would be appreciated.

The company I work for (GIS Specialist for an investor owned utility company) still requires living in the service area in case of emergency operations. But I've been working at home since April 2020. There's a possibility I could afford to retire to a place like Ecuador in a few years - at 60. Thanks for fueling my imagination.
