LIKE MOST PLACES, there are pros & cons everywhere. Our niece is hoping to retire abroad - and asked us about living as an expat. We advised her to learn Spanish (she was considering Costa Rica) - but she thought that would be unlikely due to her age. Then, we suggested Belize or the US Virgen Islands, where English is the official language - but she thought island weather would be too hot, and Belize would be too "foreign". SO, we gave up giving advice. Seems like "pros & cons" START with YOU - you have to be flexible !

That sounds wonderful. I'm a coffee junkie while my son and his fiance really enjoy hiking or walking around cities taking in the scenery. They are a cute couple who are real foodies. They are both remote workers while I'm retired. We haven't decided for sure whether to move out of the United States or not.

Cotacachi used to be famous for the leather goods that are produced there. People went to Cotacachai to buy a high quality leather clothes (great jackets) and other leather articles. In the video I saw a sign on a wall which said "Talabartería", so I guess they are still working the leather.

I decided against it because of the elevation and complicated access to a good hospital. They take you from Cota's hospital, to Ibarra and if it's bad, they send you all the way back to a hospital in Quito. If you are in heart distress, you could die in transit with all the moving around in the wrong direction instead of going straight to Quito in the first place. Also some of the established expats are territorial and overbhearing. Many are nice, but I got a bad taste from a few who seemed to think they were large and in charge. I decided to move somewhere with a less established expat community.

Enjoying your videos of various cities, towns and villages. I am thinking of relocating there at least part of the year.
Tennis is a big part of my physical and mental exercise routine here in south fl but increasingly with my age and climate
change the summers are becoming intolerable.
I have seen many other accounts of areas there and am waiting to here of some semblance of a tennis society. I'm
sure there are many private or gated communities with courts on site but do you have any knowledge of public courts
or information on tennis membership costs in private (open) centers.
Further, I would love to locate to 5000-7000 foot small town that would be close enough to commute to one of the larger
    cities along the Andes range.

Funny hearing about the restaurants closing early because the locals don't frequent them after 8:30 PM. I saw the opposite in most of my travels in Ec. While living in Cuenca, we old gringo's would usually pack it up around 7:30 at night. At a very popular eatery, Fabiano's, we'd be leaving and large family groups would be packing the place . Even work / school nights, whole families would be trekking in after 8:00 P.M. It got to the point we gringos felt quilty staying after 7:00, as if we were infringing on the indigenous folks.

That's very true in every other place we've been in EC! Cotacachi is the first place we've been to where the locals go to bed early, but it has a very large indigenous farming community so I'm guessing they get up early to work.

I would really appreciate a nice in depth video on the weather in Quito. I understand you can basically set your clock to about 60s in the day to 40s at night. All year around. But what I am interested in is the extremes. How many freezing nights or nights dip into at least into the 30s? Strong wind, melancholic days. Sleet? Ice? Snow even? I know there is hail.

Living 8n Quito for 10 months now, no snow. No really freezing g temperatures but it's not warm either. On days when it is sunny 2-4 days a weeks depending on time of year, it can be warm, in the sun. The good thing is busses run from here all the time to warmer places. I rode the nicest bus I've ever seen for a weekend to Santo Domingo, a short drive, more tropical climate. $5 / person.

They both have almost identical weather and temps. We haven’t seen a Japanese hibachi in Ecuador.

Love Cotacachi! Do you have a driver you can recommend to go from Quito?
