The drinking society thing makes so much sense! I'm at Cambridge and talking to a girl at Newcastle and I mentioned both captains of our rowing team didn't drink and she said 'how did they become captains if they don't drink?' Like because we pick our captains because they're the best, not because they can drink the most. Apparently this isn't the way it's done in some other places😂

A centralised Welfare Unit “manned” by appropriately qualified “carers” would be a good idea. Some students would prefer having their problems aired and resolved in a space away from their college. Such a space would perhaps be beneficial to lonely students, who could meet up with other lonely students to whom they might relate. Myth-wise, I applied to Oxford in the late 70s (Spanish and French papers for a place in Law, which I didn’t secure - should have stuck to languages!). At that time, Historians had to have studied or be prepared to study German. Is that still the case?
I’m choosing to go for German over Latin, but I’m going to learn specialist Latin outside of school because of certain personal and (hopeful) occupational reasons.
If you do classics you have to, and if you do CAAH (as I am) you can and it’s useful Because you are studying the Roman world knowing the language is kinda important. Also if you do philology it’s needed.
“As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. Having done almost all my studies in America, the idea of not working whilst studying just doesn’t cross most of our minds. Most atudents have at least some form of a job, whether on campus or off, or in my case - both. Living off a loan 💵 you HAVE to oay back means most American students not only work during their studies, but worked before their studies and during every break as well. I don’t remember a time between 16 (legal working age in the U.S.) and 21 (average age of completing an undergraduate degree) in which I and my friends were not working at least half time. I DID study in Oxford for a while as well (the kids’ father did his D.Phil there) and even then I worked as well. Throughout graduate school (again in America) I worked full time. So I find the whole Oxford doesn’t want you to work weird because how else are you going to take care of yourself?? I’m glad they let you work like this - or else we wouldn’t enjoy spending time with you as much as we are able - but I think Oxford needs to get with the times. From what I heard, Oxford looks at GCSE results more than Cambridge does, especially for the law course, so it might be wise for you to apply to Cambridge instead. Cambridge is said to focus more on AS, although GCSEs still matter. Basically, most universities only glimpse at GCSEs but the exceptions are Oxbridge medicine and law (plus the most competitive courses from some of the other Russel group universities like UCL, LSE etc). Your GCSEs aren't horrible though - in fact, assuming the rest of your grades were 8s and/or 9s (or even if they're not) , they are perfectly good enough for some prestigious universities including Newcastle, Manchester, Durham... you will find out when you research :)
