Potter is likely to be the next man in. He’s English, has managed in the Prem, not currently in work, needs to rebuild his reputation after Chelsea and no compensation payable to secure his services.
That is just a misrepresentation. Here in Holland the major TV channel experts are equally harsh about SG. Van der Vaart judged the approach of England harshly. Steve Mc Manaman was quite vocal about this too. Other journalists on ESPN.. It's quite mainstream and logical that we should expect the most expensive and valued national team in the world to perform more dominantly, do keep the ball better, to adapt better to changes in the opposite team. If anything, Southgate's personal qualities that he undoubtedly has and the changes he has managed to make quite ingeniously around the team, have clouded the degree to which he was out of his depth. Perhaps things could have worked out if he had had his personal stature, man management and social skills, complemented by a more modern set of coaches alongside him, like Queiroz was to Fergie or Flick and Loew used to be, perhaps this would have worked.
Criticism about us in this tournament has been valid but I think its stale - not that Southgate has been poor overall and thats where some people seem to have a very short memory! We have been good in his other tournaments before this one and he saved us from the bottlejob embarrassment that we used to be. What does annoy me is so many people seem to be legitimising their own hatred of Southgate by saying a load of stuff that isnt true. I think its just because he's intelligent and articulate. Im glad he's walking away now he deserves better than some of our fans!
This level of punditry lol... Southgate HAS to be a good tactician because he's been a player and a coach for 35 years? Stupidest thing I've heard today
If I look at the big picture of Gareth Southgate's reign, he has taken England to a higher level, and I commend him for that. In the 2018 WC he exceeded expectations by taking England to a SF. However, in that game he handed the initiative to Croatia, and lost the game. If he had learnt from that and not repeated the same mistake in Euro 2020(1), England would finally have won a tournament, that for me was the big, missed opportunity. They may have gone into WC 2022 and Euro 2024 with a different mindset, really believing that they can win tournaments. Instead, they adopted a cautious approach and when they came up against quality opposition, they succumbed. Spain 2024 are a better team than Italy 2020(1), they strolled to the final, while England scrapped and scraped their way there. I hope whoever takes over, can take the team to the next level.
i am bodly calling out sky sports. Rob and kaveh were crticizing southgate at the tourament. Not being direspectful but how comes they talk stuff that does not make sense
Thank you, Gareth, you've given us some great memories, we've seen some great players, some great games, however............ It's time we had a change, some new thinking, some new players and some refreshing ideas. England Forever!!!🏴✌️
I'm really impressed by the decision Southgate took not to continue as an England's head coach, it reminded me of the time Tata Martino announced departure from Argentina team after losing Copa America 2016. Therefore, it's going to be hard to find a new manager for England after what Gareth did.
I think he's done really great some games he could of changed things but he's done way better than the last several mangers good look for his future I remember when he took a penalty for England like Stuart peace and to see his team score like they did total respect
This guy sounds like hes from Southgates PR team, what utter nonsense. The criticisms of Southgate have been totally valid. Obviously the abuse was totally wrong but thats a small minority of fans
The media do take a U turn. Blaming it all on the fans whilst they dish out criticism as much as anyone. And also “tactically” sound…wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that the media been criticising his tactics and calling us lucky to get through? Don’t backtrack.
Southgate comes across like the Grail knight, Sir Percival, the most gracious and innocent of the Knights of the Round Table. Percival came closest in the Grail Quest but was simply unable to grasp the Holy Grail because he thought to much, as he later confessed, he realized that he did not have the required faith. There are times you need a Mordred. They may be unthinking, cruel, and vicious, they may betray you BUT that's the price you pay for success. You were a waste of time Sir Southgate. Now for a Mordred, "Leader, Leader, Leader!"
When kane came out for the second half, and after we equalised, then went deep defence again instead of going at spain, just showed Southgate's limitations, just not brave enough to have a real go at spain, Southgate is a really great guy, he did unite england players and fan's, the most continued success since 66. But it was the defeat to italy. We had them at 1-0 and never pressed for a 2nd. We got deeper and deeper against an average Italian team, i do think he should be knighted. We now need a manager to take us one step further and win a major tournament. The FA. Need to show ambition and make a good offer to klopp, sadly they won't, and will appoint a safe, yes man, who will conform to the FA's mediocre way of boring stability, when we have the players for attacking rock nroll football.
There´s a certain demographic of person who is going to insist that the next manager plays intense, fast paced attacking football, then spends the next 2 years criticising players for saying that they get tired and play too many games, then will act shocked when the England team look exhausted playing Miami, LA and Mexico City in July and we get put out of our misery in ET the last 16 🤣
Correct.. let's play high pressing football at 4pm in Mexico City during the summer and then criticise the Manager for not playing Antony Gordon when to play him you'd have to bench Foden or Bellingham. Lets bring in Kevin Keegan and and Terry McDermott to take us forward!
I think Southgate fell short when it came to in-game player changes and in sticking to players like Kane who simply were not performing well from the start. Otherwise, I think Southgate did well and there is a need perhaps for us to reign in our perception of just how good our players are, whether individually or as a team, as I think a lot of the responsibility falls on their shoulders for not performing close to their best. We only saw brief fleeting moments of brilliance which showed what they can do and it was in those moments that got us over the line. The question is, aside from not playing free flowing attacking players like Palmer from the start, why don’t the players show that kind of gusto consistently or more frequently during games?
I've never heard so much claptrap. Journalists ignoring his coaching skills and saying he's a brilliant manager because he's woke and always says the right thing.
I've no doubt that Southgate is a wonderful human being who endeared himself to both players and the media. But, here's the but. At no stretch of the imagination can anyone consider or think of Southgate as an elite coach and tactician. His list of tactical errors is numerous and not just in Euro 2024 Happy retirement, Gareth. Now, the FA has to find that elite coach who can mould England's generational talent into a cohesive team that will get bums off seats
Give GS the knighthood “ that’s what we do for second best ,you all said he deserved when made the final , also give everyone the day off , for coming second best ….we’re mentally no good enough , and bottled it , when we Palmer scored the equalizer, we went defensive and it cost us the final .. forget the WC , because they are a lot more big teams to play against at the WC, we need Pep “ in as our New England manager.
Supporters' voices on social media, down the pub, or at work are as important, if not more so, than the media clique on here who are paying homage to Southgate and the way he set up his teams throughout the Euros. Southgate turned a group of exciting and talented pros into a bore fest There is no way that anyone with an ounce of knowledge of the beautiful game could describe Southgate as an elite coach and tactician.
It's absolutely pathetic that some England players did not want to play for their country and prioritised their club. Absolutely garbage and pathetic. What kind of People who do not prioritise playing and giving their everything for country. If this does not go away they will never win anything with any manager. I love you Sir Gareth Southgate
I think Southgate is a thoroughly decent and honourable bloke who has given his all to the cause. However, with the players that England have, semi-finals/finals/trophies are where England should be. I really like the guy and wish him all the best but he is at par. England are about where they ought to be and below where they could be. After 8 years in charge, he went to the Euros not knowing his best 11, playing TAA out of position, and he switched to an entirely new formation after a few games. That cannot be overlooked. With these players and that length of time in office, he ought to have rocked up to Germany with an 11 who were a well-drilled unit. He has been the most successful England manager of my lifetime and I admire and respect him for that, but he has taken a side than can go further than this as far as he can.
The major thing with this whole England situation can be explained by The Dunning-Kruger effect, it is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. In laymans terms you may watch an England game and think you know better but actually you are just a partial observer thinking you know more than actual trained individuals.
One thing about southgate he knew kane wasnt good and was injured but he still did not drop him spain had it easy in that final it was one sided when a final shouldnt be
He built the foundation of English national team for future. Everyone need to respect him for that. English supporters need to feel less self entitled, Remember that England national team hav never win anything since 1966
Thank you very much, Mr. Gareth Southgate. Now, a suggestion for the FA: after 58 years, it is time to prioritize making the right decisions. The national football team manager should have greater credibility than managers at the club level.

Apparently England went up 20 places in the FIFA rankings after the announcement 🤦
This Kaveh dude exemplifies the problem with English football media. What load of nonsense is he talking about?
Criticism about us in this tournament has been valid but I think its stale - not that Southgate has been poor overall and thats where some people seem to have a very short memory! We have been good in his other tournaments before this one and he saved us from the bottlejob embarrassment that we used to be. What does annoy me is so many people seem to be legitimising their own hatred of Southgate by saying a load of stuff that isnt true. I think its just because he's intelligent and articulate. Im glad he's walking away now he deserves better than some of our fans!
If they're trying to spin this as success imagine what they would've been saying if England had won the tournament...🤦♂️
They should go for Gary Linika or Alan Shieran to test their knowledge on the field rather than on TV.
This level of punditry lol... Southgate HAS to be a good tactician because he's been a player and a coach for 35 years? Stupidest thing I've heard today
This is the greatest bit of satire I've seen from Sky Sports. Kaveh is a comical genius! 😂
I think his only mistake was sticking with kane, if we had Watkins playing from the start things may have been different
That’s the biggest win for English football since he took over.
We havent seen that level of success before. Failure not success.
Ten Haag should be worried for his job now 😂😂😂😂
FINALLY. 🎉🎉🎉
I bet even Kaveh’s wife doesn’t believe the waffle that comes out of his mouth the vast majority of the time
Kaveh glazing Southgate is shameful!
i am bodly calling out sky sports.
What universe is Kaveh knocking about in? Clueless
This is when you close the comments, sky sports.
Klopp keeps 1 tab open at all times, and knows the music is coming from Spotify. Cya Gaz.
I like how Karen pretends the media had no part in the abuse. The media had the loudest voice.
Hang on a minute........... aren't these journos also guilty of criticising Southgate on numerous occasions......... even during this tournament????🤔🤔
The question is, aside from not playing free flowing attacking players like Palmer from the start, why don’t the players show that kind of gusto consistently or more frequently during games?
southgate was like sean dyche managing real madrid or barcelona...
His list of tactical errors is numerous and not just in Euro 2024
Happy retirement, Gareth. Now, the FA has to find that elite coach who can mould England's generational talent into a cohesive team that will get bums off seats
These same guys criticising Southgate for the last month! Both talking utter knackers!!! Our football team are boring to watch....
Steve Holland, Talented 🤣🤣🤣
Ferguson was never known for being nice and likeable, but he won things..
If Southgate can’t handle “personal criticism” then he should definitely stay away from club football especially the premier league 😅
Southgate is a saint. Putting people on pedestal for God sake 😀
Kaveh is not an analyst he's a reporter. Not sure when his opinion became important
Supporters' voices on social media, down the pub, or at work are as important, if not more so, than the media clique on here who are paying homage to Southgate and the way he set up his teams throughout the Euros. Southgate turned a group of exciting and talented pros into a bore fest
There is no way that anyone with an ounce of knowledge of the beautiful game could describe Southgate as an elite coach and tactician.
It's absolutely pathetic that some England players did not want to play for their country and prioritised their club. Absolutely garbage and pathetic. What kind of People who do not prioritise playing and giving their everything for country. If this does not go away they will never win anything with any manager. I love you Sir Gareth Southgate
he's the only coach of the modern era. ofc he the best you wont try anyone else. 8 years is too long
I think Southgate is a thoroughly decent and honourable bloke who has given his all to the cause.
Well done, Gareth… the record is amazing.
Solehkol and Dorset are they a comedy duo
The major thing with this whole England situation can be explained by The Dunning-Kruger effect, it is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. In laymans terms you may watch an England game and think you know better but actually you are just a partial observer thinking you know more than actual trained individuals.
He took England as far as he could and then ran out of ideas.
Is Kaveh drunk? What club wants Southgate as a manager? He is a limited manager who got lucky draws.
One thing about southgate he knew kane wasnt good and was injured but he still did not drop him spain had it easy in that final it was one sided when a final shouldnt be
A period of manager favoritism, a team of pets, 4 tournaments of easy draws, beaten when it mattered
He built the foundation of English national team for future. Everyone need to respect him for that. English supporters need to feel less self entitled, Remember that England national team hav never win anything since 1966
He was tactically inept- ignoring that is inept. Any of the top countries managers managing England would have won it.
Gaz you did a great job big dawgg...dont let these haters get to you 👊😤
This guy is the reason he lasted 8 years blind beyond belief. Should of gone before the euros
Thank you very much, Mr. Gareth Southgate. Now, a suggestion for the FA: after 58 years, it is time to prioritize making the right decisions. The national football team manager should have greater credibility than managers at the club level.
