Chioggia is a small town that we would look for relatively close (only about 25 kilometers) to the famous Venice - and as if that were not enough, it really more than resembles Venice. Originally founded by the Romans, during the medieval period it was an important center of the republic, which became famous throughout the world as a seafaring power.
The Byzantines and the Venetians took turns as owners here, it was mainly about trade - at that time very valuable salt was mined here, of course the contribution to the state treasury from extensive fishing was not negligible. At the end of the fourteenth century, a raid by the Genoese fleet unfortunately caused considerable damage here. The rich island city took quite a long time to recover from this blow...
Today, Chioggia has a population of fifty thousand, in addition to the typical Italian climate and well-being, tourists can mainly admire the church monuments here. One of the oldest surviving buildings in the city is the eleventh-century Santa Maria church, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the city gates. If you like religious buildings built on smaller islands, the Church of St. Dominic is ideal. And to the third? Try the Sant'Andrea church from the eighteenth century, next to which is the famous Torre dell'Orologio tower, almost a whole millennium older. The name is certainly not out of place, because here you will find one of the oldest tower clocks in the world.
Similar to Venice - the city also offers a lot of water channels, each of which is crossed by several bridges, but a romantic boat ride is certainly not out of the question. The local fishing is really famous.

Chioggia je malé městečko, které bychom hledali vlastně poměrně nedaleko (asi jen 25 kilometrů) proslulých Benátek - a jako by toho nebylo málo, Benátky navíc opravdu více než připomíná. Založili je původně Římané, během medieválního období šlo o významné centrum republiky, jež proslula po celém světě jako mořeplavecká velmoc.
Jako vlastníci se tu vystřídali Byzantinci a Benátčané, šlo především o obchod - těžila se zde tehdy velmi drahocenná sůl, zanedbatelný samozřejmě nebyl ani příspěvek státní pokladnici z rozsáhlého rybolovu. Na konci čtrnáctého století zde bohužel napáchal značné škody nájezd janovské flotily. Bohaté ostrovní město se z této rány vzpamatovávalo poměrně dlouho…
Dnes má Chioggia na padesát tisíc obyvatel, kromě typického italského klima a pohody zde mohou turisté obdivovat hlavně církevní památky. Jednou z nejstarších dochovaných staveb ve městě je chrám Santa Maria z jedenáctého století, který je situován do bezprostřední blízkosti městských bran. Pokud máte rádi sakrální stavby postavené na menších ostrovech, je chrám svatého Dominika přímo ideálem. A do třetice? Zkuste chrám Sant´Andrea z osmnáctého století, vedle nějž je proslulá věž Torre dell´Orologio, takřka o celé tisíciletí starší. Název rozhodně není nemístný, najdete tu totiž jedny z nejstarších věžních hodin na světě.
Podobně jako v Benátkách - město nabízí i spoustu vodních kanálů, přes každý vede několik mostů, ale romantická projížďka na loďkách rozhodně není od věci. Místní rybářství je skutečně proslulé.

Ursprünglich von den Römern gegründet, war es im Mittelalter ein wichtiges Zentrum der Republik, die als Seefahrermacht in der ganzen Welt berühmt wurde.
Als Besitzer wechselten sich hier die Byzantiner und die Venezianer ab, es ging vor allem um Handel - damals wurde hier sehr wertvolles Salz abgebaut, natürlich war der Beitrag zur Staatskasse durch ausgedehnten Fischfang nicht unerheblich. Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts verursachte ein Überfall der genuesischen Flotte hier leider erhebliche Schäden. Es dauerte ziemlich lange, bis sich die reiche Inselstadt von diesem Schlag erholte ...
Heute hat Chioggia fünfzigtausend Einwohner. Neben dem typisch italienischen Klima und Wohlbefinden können Touristen hier vor allem die Kirchendenkmäler bewundern. Eines der ältesten erhaltenen Gebäude der Stadt ist die Kirche Santa Maria aus dem 11. Jahrhundert, die sich in unmittelbarer Nähe der Stadttore befindet. Wenn Sie religiöse Gebäude auf kleineren Inseln mögen, ist die Kirche St. Dominic ideal. Und zum dritten? Probieren Sie die Kirche Sant'Andrea aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, neben der sich der berühmte Turm Torre dell'Orologio befindet, der fast ein ganzes Jahrtausend älter ist. Der Name ist sicherlich nicht fehl am Platz, denn hier steht eine der ältesten Turmuhren der Welt.
Ähnlich wie Venedig bietet auch die Stadt viele Wasserkanäle, die jeweils von mehreren Brücken überquert werden, aber eine romantische Bootsfahrt ist sicherlich nicht ausgeschlossen.
