  • In this video, we explain the diamond colour grading scale, invented by GIA in the 1950s. The colour scale starts with D (colourless) and goes with increasing presence of colour to Z (yellow or brown).
    We also look at the variance you can find in colour grades, even from the same laboratory.
    This video also covers diamond color, the American spelling.
    For expert information and advice, please feel free to call and speak with one of our diamond experts on 01932 260100 (UK) or 0044 1932 260100 (International).

    What I don’t understand if the clarity and the grade. My question is are flawless (FL) diamonds D color or F? As well is it a possibility you can have a VS1 J color diamond?

    • @jacobspeeds
      @jacobspeeds 2 роки тому +4

      You can have a diamond in any combination. One doesn't affect the other. You can have a flawless Z color diamond even

    I have a question for you, I am having a custom pendant made and the diamonds are rows of the micro diamonds... i have a good price for SI 1 I color, they wanted to go with SI 1 H color, but of course its a bit more money. With the diamonds being so small is the difference in H and I color worth the extra money? Set in yellow gold.

    • @SamaraJamesJewellers
      @SamaraJamesJewellers  5 років тому +3

      The difference between and I and H colour set in yellow gold won't be noticeable as the diamond will take reflections from the yellow metal setting, and this will be a much more important factor than the more subtle colour difference.
      To my eye, I would also say diamonds love being set in yellow metal - it really helps accentuate the beauty of diamond.
      My advice would be spend time examining both diamonds in terms of the inclusions. No SI1 clarity diamonds are the same and there is a big difference between a "top SI1" and a more regular SI1 diamond.
      Check if there are any crystals in the table of the diamond? Do the crystals reflect, and are they generally white or black? Are there any feathers on the girdle of the diamond which could affect its durability? Also look at the diamond from the side to check for side visible inclusions.
      The other important factor to consider is the overall levels of fire, scintillation and brilliance. Even if the diamond is a GIA "Excellent Cut", there are visible differences in terms of beauty to the eye in terms of a diamond which has every facet cut correctly and one where just the average of the angles is correct.
      Hope that helps. If you would like any more advice please feel free to get in touch at expert@samarajames.com or on our phone number +44 1932 260100.
      Good luck!

    I’m confused. What is the difference between a yellow diamond lower on the color scale that’s cheap and a yellow diamond that’s expensive?

    • @horaw9902
      @horaw9902 4 роки тому +1

      Taylor Van Cleve when the intense of the color yellow reaches certain level it becomes yellow diamond and is evaluated in a whole different way. Yellow diamonds are also rare, especially the fancy intense ones. Diamonds on a lower scale of color are still actually white diamonds, not yellow diamonds. (Pretty much like that, I’m no expert on diamonds tho so the details could be wrong...)

    Does every diamond change color in the long run or once the diamond is categorized will that be the color it will keep forever?

    • @Mr.Titanic
      @Mr.Titanic 5 років тому +4

      It won't change color because color is established when the diamond forms, which for most diamonds was millions of years ago. The impurities that give color are either there when it forms, or not. After the crystal forms, it is what it is.

    • @chiragdesai884
      @chiragdesai884 5 років тому +2

      Yes, It's won’t change color after craftsman finish polished diamond, while the process of the rough stage to polish diamond there is probabilities of the color change, but here is another stage of probabilities of color change after a long time of years.
      For example in 2015 your diamond is graded and certified as H color and after 5 to 7 years you send it to the lab again for rectification, here are possibilities for color change. Due to new technologies or new method (R&D) found in the lab day to day, there may be variant of color in your diamond.

    How about carbonado diamonds are four c's consider?

    • @SamaraJamesJewellers
      @SamaraJamesJewellers  5 років тому +1

      When you are considering black diamonds (carbonado), the traditional four c's don't apply. Instead you should look at the overall appearance of the stones, how well cut they are, and the quality of the lustre of the diamond. Crucially, there are a lot of treated black black diamonds in the market, so you need to check into this as well. Hope that is of use!

    how to colour grade if I have d to n master stones and if wants to grade o to z?

    • @SamaraJamesJewellers
      @SamaraJamesJewellers  8 років тому +1

      To do it accurately, you really need the additional master stones to allow the lower colour grades to the assessed properly. It won't be possible to get an accurate reference point using master stones which are so different in colour. Sorry I can't offer a better solution.
