You are blessed to have Jana. My wife rolls her eyes when I listen to Prog in the car (psst It's all I listen too) She immediately puts her headphones in and listens to whatever it is she listens too. Whenever I see a couple reacting to prog I always wonder how each would react to each other listening to Genesis - Counting Out Time and see reaction of pure humorous gold. Keep going guys and good for you Jana showing your support by trying new things.
Sounds like the kind of wife I wouldn’t want to have. Open mindedness, curiosity and exploration are parts of life and if a person can’t even be bothered they’re not for me
I mean that breakdown section with the guitar and keyboards is like a religious experience! If you can’t vibe and appreciate the beauty of that you’re absolutely dead!
Saw Dream Theater in NYC last year - and this was the last song they played. I got chills. It's amazing, and the kind of song no other genre can do. Great video!
This is one of the best. It often gets overshadowed by Octavarium for some reason, as if people can't help but lump all lengthy epics as one. This song is great, as it closes up a great album perfectly.
I only discovered Dream Theater about a year ago when I found Distance Over Time at my local Walmart. I've put a good 15k km on my car joy-riding to their catalogue. And, A View from the Top of the World just dropped today. I can't wait for the weekend.
Hi Nathan, Hi Jana. Thank you so much for selecting this Dream Theater track...I have been a DT fan since the very beginning. I'm a 64 year old rock and metal fan...of all types of rock, prog rock and metal. Ranging from King Crimson , ELP, Yes, Focus etc to Metallica , Opeth, Dream Theater, Enslaved and many more. It was quite a hard one for Jana to follow but I have to say hats off to Jana...you are getting there with the metal and prog...it won't be long before you are a fully fledged rock fan 👍✌️😆. Keep the reactions coming. Take care, stay safe. Peace guys . From Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
dude you're so lucky to have her lol. she has the musical intellect to appreciate this stuff on a first listen. keep her around brother! great reaction guys love the channel yall are doing great 🤘
You guys have such great chemistry. Your smiles and banter are so uplifting. 31:00 the way I heard it was that John's family had a history with this line of Tuscan counts, and he was visiting a castle. He had a panic attack, and started irrationally freaking out, because he has a panic disorder which he has talked about in interviews and in some of his lyrics.
This is a good 'Prog Epic' to share with non-Prog enthusiasts. I loved how Jana used the word 'epic' in her commentary not knowing that that is actually a thing in Prog music... Of course we all have different criteria for defining what makes a Prog song an Epic, but it is not certainly song length, though often that is a common, first thread. I always considered this song Mike Portnoy's Closing Opus (at least until recently...) before leaving the band. He somehow managed to cram 98% of the elements of technique that he had spent his career mastering into that song. My favorite performance on this one, though is John Petrucci's. Even the short solo in the Intro is so expressive as to evoke watery eyes after a couple fingers of good rye whiskey. You just feel it in your soul. David Gilmour's influence is certainly heard in this one. He is the only other guitarist to evoke that same effect in me. Also, +1 to @Arrow2theACL's comment...I have two sons and several friends that share in my love of Prog Rock/Metal....but my wife is not one of them......
you seems like a really nice guy Nathan, look at your wife's confusion face at 17:15, love it. maybe you should try a softer one like Hells kithen+lines in the sand, i think shes gonna love it
Great reaction guys! Jana, gotta correct you on one little thing, though. The opening sequence is in 6, not 5, but it's broken up into an unusual meter, going 4-2 rather than 2-2-2 (3/4) or 3-3 (6/8). The way it pauses on the 3 really makes it feel like it's a 5/4 measure though, kinda like falling off of a cliff. This is easily my favorite DT track, from the first time I heard the first notes of this song, I fell in love with it. It's so well composed, but it sounds so much more complex than it actually is.
I think the part she's talking about in five is from that section where they are alternating measures of 6/8 and 9/8. (Technically it cycles through 6/8, 9/8, 12/8) Depending on how you think about it, some of that could just be treated as triplets in five.
Just FYI, Mike Portnoy did a bunch of videos on his channel going through A-Z of his vinyl collection. A lot, but not all. His collection & knowledge is HUGE. Check it out
My first listen as well. I view the instrumental opening as the overture to a musical, and it wasn't too heavy for my taste. The opening lyrics and musical accompaniment became a bit too heavy for my taste, but it was short enough I was able to forge through it. Opposite of Jana, I loved the slowed down, peaceful instrumental before the final lyrics. And the song ended nicely. It may take a few more listens for me to appreciate the heavier opening lyrical section, but overall I enjoyed and would most likely not automatically skip over if I come across it again.
Research the story behind the lyrics and I'm sure you'll find the heavier sections even more amazing as it relates to the overall theme of the song. These guys are geniuses and masters prog metal compositions.
Over half of the prog I know is from searching the web and Spotify. The Paradox Twin is a band worth checking out. Check out Wounded album by Enchant. It's from 1996.
Making lists can be fun. On my blog I wrote my Top 40 pieces of Prog music that's at least 8 minutes in length. It was fun making it, though it changes every year. When I made the list in May of 2020, I had barely heard pieces like Supper's Ready and others, so they didn't make my list and even though I explained that, someone still found it odd that certain pieces didn't make my list. Go figure, lol. Hi Jana 🙂
I would like to respectfully recommend some legendary epic prog classics. Please check out: Supper's Ready by Genesis Magnum Opus by Kansas The Gates of Delirium by Yes
Happy couple. So she is more into attractive metal rather than slow sentimental soul session. In the beginning i guess she likes the slower part, but my guess was wrong 😆.
Well I guess the 42 minute ultra-epic Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater is out of the question because it's too long?? Maybe you can do it in sections.

Discard your wife lol 😂😂

God this song is so great. Its actually really cool to see other people enjoying this stuff too. Good video guys
Awesome reaction. This is probably my favorite song on this album, and top 10 of all DT songs. Thanks for sharing. Great stuff.

I agree with everything you said! It has always been one of my favorite Dream Theater songs!
The fact that it's the last song with Mike will always make it special to me.
I really appreciate you taking your time to listen this kind of stuff lady. I really do.

nice couple....happy for you guys !!!
Your wife is awesome.
Thanks for the great together reaction.
There's a UA-cam video where Mike Portnoy counts well over 100 time changes in the song Dance of Eternity. Crazy stuff!!
Please more dream theater live
Haha Bro you have a good feel!
Loved the video!! Keep it up!

Awesome recommendations, I love all of them! They are all definitely on our list!
Back when Mtv actually played music. the good ol' days
She will freaking enjoy Home by them. It's like Tool on steroids. Pls get to react to that!
Please also check out The Messiah Complex Suite by Haken (all 5 parts). This is a SICK epic!!
Happy couple. So she is more into attractive metal rather than slow sentimental soul session.

check out a band from norway called Airbag
Y'all are cuties.
mm i love Pop Rocks ; )
Cute
So nice to have a wife willing to have an open mind! Always liked this song but it's WAY too long...
It is, I’m really grateful for her. She would agree with you about it being too long!
I love that it's an epic song. Long songs like this one rule!!
Way too short. Would fit as a musical continuum
What? The slow section is the best party of the song... Talk about different taste...
7 minutes commenting before the video, that's demotivating please 🙄
Dream Theater live is preferable.
