      wonderful. how did you mix your substrate ratio. if you use store bought mushroom can u use it as spawn

    • @bonnie1303
      @bonnie1303 6 місяців тому

      @@boyanionuonga5010idk about ratio for this method, but you have to use colonized substrate as spawn - grains or something that has been colonized by the mushroom mycelium. You can buy spawn or you can make it, but homemade is much more complicated for a beginner.

    When dried and pulverized, oyster mushrooms make a great seasoning, some say it tastes even better than nutritional yeast!

      a lot tastes better than nutritional yeast 😔

    • @themushroominside6540
      @themushroominside6540 Рік тому +57

      Nutritional yeast is fungus as well which is why it tastes very similar when dried, mushrooms/edible fungus will taste vastly different when dried vs fresh, this is because certain compounds are only created during the drying process and are dependent on how you dry the mushrooms. Differing mushrooms will taste relatively the same when dried but how they are treated/dried is often not, leading to vastly different tastes as people approach fungus preservation differently towards certain fungus which is why you can get a really flavorful stock from certain dried cremini mushrooms brands rather than shitake and vise versa. For certain mushrooms like morels and truffles, drying them often removes their unique flavor compounds that are best experienced fresh as the chemicals are volatile and easily oxidize when not used quickly.

      Yeah & Have You checked the pricing on Pure Powdered Mushroom? It’s crazy! A few Years ago I bought one of those big spice plastic containers of Enochi (sp?) powdered Mushrooms and it cost me $40usd, given it lasted me ages (great for umami add to various recipes+always had what I needed for a mushroom soup base), so when it was all said and done it was probably cost effective, but that $40 hit was a lot (at least to my budget)..Plus, I have to be careful and read everything label+description wise, as many of the Mfgrs use sulfur to preserve dried mushrooms & I’m highly allergic to Sulfur…so make at home mushroom powder would be a lot safer+cost effective!😊👍

    You can use filter patches instead of cutting holes. Wait until they pin to cut the holes to decrease contamination (not necessary in a clean/filtered storage environment). Also, mushrooms will produce Vit D even after harvested, so the lights aren't necessary. Just set the harvested shrooms in sunlight for a bit...

    The mycelium stage can grow on extremely high co²
    If you make the cuts after it is all colonized you can reduce contamination risk and keep humidity up without damage.

    An extra. It may be easier for some to not use a grow light. One of the best things about mushroom growing is not needing it. And if you are growing food over the winter, you know how rough that can be, lol. You can set them out in the sun for like 15, 30 minutes to get some vit d. Also, the whole oyster mushroom genus is great for cholesterol.

      Accurate! However, these have been harvested while the caps are still turned in a bit - this is a clear sign that the oysters have not begun sporulating yet. When the caps are fully turned up is when this starts to be a problem. It's still really important to think about if one is growing inside, and more than a bag or two 😊
