@@CasuallyComics His zinger line grounds everything in a way that even the movie adaptation of Watchmen and the modern malaise of snappy, sarcastic Gunnian cannot match.
I remember seeing the Feel Good Inc music video a little bit when I was kid during the 2000s in my older sisters’ bedroom while their TV was turned onto MTV. I was pretty fascinated by this dark animated music video, I have never seen anything like it before. Then I found out about the Gorillaz and started listening to their music when I was 18 right before their 2017 comeback and have been a fan ever since.
Count me as a comic history nerd, and I love these sorts of dives into unique, of-their-era comics that I will NEVER have the financial wherewithal to purchase myself.
I love Gorillaz so I'm glad this comic exists. Because if not then we wouldn't have one of the best fictional bands out there. RIP Carl Weathers thank you
This looks like a fun collection. There's something I really like about how irreverent a lot of British comics tend to be. I'm generally more on the indie comics side because they don't feel bound to the same "rules" as the big two here in the US, but even then, we get indie superheroes a lot. Stuff like this and the (not that far off mainstream) 2000 AD/Judge Dredd comics are fun because they have the same love of the art form but don't play by the superhero rules.
YO. I totally read this at the time and I'm pretty sure I still have the issues. But my brain remembered this as being "Tank Girl" so I totally forgot it wasn't. But as you were going through it all came back to me. Particularly the "Gallagher Island" comic. The Face had that type of energy so it was a perfect fit with that era of "Cool Britannia." Thanks for the reminder/refresher. It's a must get!
It was on bbc three it was part of a season of pilots only one of the pilots got picked up that was a show about a vampire a werewolf and a ghost living together called being human
I'm still reached world building and write and character development and write characters and how story for my comic universes. I'm still learning drawing.
I just came across some of the stills of Whitey on Pinterest! Fan of Gorillaz since 2005 and thusly Jamie Hewlett’s work. Needless to say, pretty intrigued
Loved the Tank Girl comics. Hewlett adds so much detail and goofs in his art I could pick out some new detail every read through! Glad to know he had other comic endeavors!
For more British indie goodness, check out... Revolver, Deadline and Crises. All comics from the same era, when us 2000AD kids had grown up and wanted things a bit more edgy, whilst the UK was exploding with great music and fashion, but still dealing with the hell Margaret Thatcher was creating.
Had been seeing this pop up in my advertisements for a while, brain is still on "IGNORE ALL ADS" mode so its good to hear what its about and actually got me to look more into this book
I had never heard of this, so thanks for the video. Hewlett's art looks awesome (as it always does) and is very reminiscent of british comics all the way into the early 2000s. Would you ever be interested in doing a history of the publication of Akira in the West? I know you don't talk about manga as much, but it's the early days of manga showing up stateside, at least. Could even touch on Tokyopop too.
For a bit more context regarding The Face from someone who read it back in that time. It wasn't just a celebrity mag or even just a music mag, it was a magazine for the Club Kids and was very visual and design focused, it's even featured as a permanent exhibition in the Design Museum in London. Think Party Monster, it was a magazine for those sort of kids
Dude ive always love Tank Girl / Gorillaz so seeing the illutrators other work is a blessing!❤Its so me!😂 Thank you so much for the coverage!!!!❤️❤️❤️😘Also thank you for the link! I totally want a copy!💕)
I can't recall its name, but there was a double-issue one-shot that was lampooning the living daylights out of the newly formed direct market. And yes, it was a black-and-white. It's not a favorite since I don't have those, but it had the same sort of wry, ginger wit that these guys wanted to evoke. For rags I'm interested in reading, there're Shi and Dawn--some reasons are obvious, others not.
Challenging Question. I like it. I would say *Cannon Busters.* If you know Cannon Busters from Netflix. You might not know that Cannon Busters was originally a comic book back in the 2005, published by Devil’s Due and Udon entertainment. The cast looks very different from the anime on Netflix. Shame Netflix didn’t give Cannon Busters season 2 There is *Nightworld* from Image by Adam McGovern and Pablo Leandri. *The Last Witch by Conor McCreery from Boom Studios.* By March 2025 it would be 2 years since he announced on twitter that he making volume 2. I know it takes time but I am sad the Boom Studios are not highlighting The Last Witch like Something is killing the children and Flavor Girls. The sequel of Flavor Girls is out. Best to describe Last Witch. Imagine Avatar last Airbender but it in Irish Celtic folklore. I was about to say Firebreather but there already other UA-camrs making video about Firebreather’s comics origins. *Gogor by Ken Garing* a high fantasy adventure with a giant golem. What more can you ask for?
Damn this was definitely pretty weird, but also pretty damn sweet and comforting! I'm glad this series got to exist and then come back all colorful and glossy once again!
Makes me wonder how prevalent European mainstay comics such as The Adventures of Tintin and Asterix the Gaul are in the US. The later is so famous in Germany it got translated into regional dialects!
Good morning. I'm fan of gorillaz. Everyone have great day and next day and week and weekend and next week and full happiness 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊. Great video and keep make great videos.
I LOVE Jamie Hewlett's art. I've been a Tank Girl fan for years and l even love the movie; a few of my instructors at film school worked on the animated bits of it. I don't like the Gorilaz though.
@@CasuallyComics I thought Lori Petty was miscast. Part of the charm of "Tank Girl" is the juxtaposition of "tank" and "girl." Lori Petty's already established 'tough chick" persona undermined that dichotomy. Live-action "Hit Girl" pulled off that dichotomy much more successfully, imo. Also, Kangaroo Ice-T is just disturbing...
Man, it's crazy how much culture and society has regressed since the 90s. The 2020s are the most vapid and useless time period that I've ever lived through. What an awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing this :-)
It's peak my interest. I want look it and want read. I litte tank girl and I still want more read. I'm fan of 90's and 80s and early 2000 and comic and manga and others.
I'm British and lived through the 90's. I did read Tank Girl in collected edition back then and enjoyed it. Didn't see the film because I saw a preview clip of it and I didn't think the scene it was showing was at all well directed. So that put me off. And the bad reviews of course. I was never into any of those indie scenes or music at all, so none of that's for me. So I don't think this would appeal. Interesting to know it exists though as I didn't previously.
I’m currently doing an art study on Jamie Hewlett, so cool to see another series other than Tank Girl and Gorillaz.
"Forgotten"? Heh. RIP Carl Weathers!🫡
He's my favorite part of that pilot.

The bbc did make a pilot called phoo action with Jamie winton as whitey

i remember "finding scans" of this in highschool. it was out of order and did not help me understand the chaos haha
90’s Sub-culture… my favorite culture, truly the peak of humanity

This is for me. Wish I'd known about it before Christmas.
What a great Boxing Day treat. Thanks for putting on your comics-snorkel and taking this deep dive.

off the top of m'noodle, Nightmares and Fairy Tales is one. I Feel Sick in another.
Scott McCloud's "Zot!" One of my favorite books of all time!

Very Cool. I love Hewlett's style, but have a few Tank Girl archives and I find the writing/storytelling hard to follow.
Whitey is Noodle's older sister, because, as much as I love Jamie, he draws one woman and changes her face and hair a little.

What was the name of the graphic novel that had the science fiction anime cover in the background? It’s next to the graphic novel called the big hunt.
