We are down in Genoa, Italy looking at two superyachts belonging to Mr Jeff Bezos (you may have heard of him) ;-) They are in a shipyard after just a few weeks of use, which of course begs the question: What is wrong with his brand new superyachts? You may be surprised by the answer.

I think it isn't in the home dock in the Netherlands is because of a bridge somewhere along the way.
The reason why Koru's masts are around the 60m mark is because there is the Bridge of the Americas at the Panama canal which is at 62m above sea level. Any taller and it's a long way around !
Those exact masts were somewhat problematic when leaving the Netherlands as the shipyard of oceanco is more inland.
@@linanicolia1363
I hope I do ! 😉
It is of course possible to unstep (take down) the masts to go under the bridge.
@@robertewalt7789 not a chance, have you any idea of the work involved. far easier to sacrifice a few meters on build and be sure you can go where you want to.
My sons mast is 84m and they have to go the long way round. Third world problems!
The boat can not go back to the wharf in the Netherlands, because with the masts installed it can not pass certain bridges. Was also the reason why the masts were not installed at the wharf, but at the international harbour, closer to the Northsea.
Ah yes however they drop the rigs and pass as desired.
Those masts ,all the rigging and electronics mounted to them are a huge deal to just “drop”
@@ralphgarrett9034come on , surely you just “press a button”. 😀
He tried to get them to take the bridge apart but the pushback was too much even for him
I'm always impressed by the way you are in tune with the crews of these boats you watch. Of course, it makes perfect sense but it also gives all of us a peek into their lives.
Thanks for the Video!
Moving the boat from the yard out to sea in The Netherlands necessitated a number of major interventions to allow the ship to pass, that caused controversy in the country. I can imagine the yard would like to avoid two repeats of that commotion and also the cost of all those interventions would have been quite large.
As much as I dislike ads, I have to admit that was a buttery smooth transition into it. Hopefully you won't go overboard with them, but glad to see you are getting rewarded for the consistent, quality work you do.
It's called a "punch list" in architecture. When you compile a list of to do items that are yet to be completed. This is kinda similar, 95% done but a list for the 5%.
It's a "punch list" in engineering, as well.
In mechanical engineering, it is usually known as a snag list and the process of fixing the problems on the list is known as "snagging".
Nice relaxed video😌. Was not aware of a automated height restriction for your drone, interesting. Thanks,👋🇺🇸
Nice production ( music in keeping with the quiet marina vibe ... ). If I had to choose between the two boats, I'd take the support vessel, even without the toys. It looks fantastic.
Oh, but show me more Black Pearl! That vessel is so much more interesting in all sorts of ways.
Nice video, I’ve been sailing since I was 3 months old , especially enjoyed this one. Also, all the Harbor scenes were great . Thanks Again
If I had Jeff Bezos’ money, I would want it square-rigged and a bunch of guys needed to climb the rigging and setting the sails manually from the yardarms. Maybe a few 32 pounders sticking out of gunports too. And a parrot.
I sailed on a recreation 1812 topsail ketch for 2 years doing tall ship events 6 guns, four 3 lbers and two six. Two parrots and a museums worth of authentic cutlass and pistols authentically rigged i worked the topsails alone, would give me foot to sail a real working square rigger.
I second this.
Brilliant! I've been trying to think of ways to keep life onboard from getting boring, and pet birds, whether cockatoos, parrots or parakeets are a good idea. At least they seem nice in their videos.
You know the Koru is a fancy yacht when its support vessel is the size of most other fancy yahts.
Esysman - At FEADSHIP they usually just send a detachment of engineers and craftsman to work on-location. Those guys stay like 4-5 nights and work like 16 hours a day to get it done.
So yes, your assumption is grounded in reality and I can see OCEANCO doing the same thing.
Fun fact: "little niggles" are in Dutch known as "child diseases" per direct translation.
If your drone was at 60 mtrs, you can determine the height by looking where the masts cross the horizon, so looks like you could probably add another 10 mtrs to that.
If the earth was flat that should be true.
You know what it's like on a new boat ... good to hear someone with experience ...
Genoa is the Finish Line Port for The Ocean Race, 50th Anniversary! The Port festivities open 24 June thru 2 July 2023. The Grand Finale race to Genoa commenced this morning from Den Haag, NL. The VO65 and IMOCA 60 sailing yachts are expected to finish 24-25 June. Probably not flashy enough for Bezos, but the crews are in for a treat!
Great episode. I'd really missed your 'dock-walking' videos. News are also good but this is why I subscribed (long time ago now). I surprised myself recognising so many boats. Nice one 👍
It reminds of the old adage about Hollywood mansions, and the bigger the swimming pool the less time the owner has to swim in it.
Really enjoyed that one
All the best to you and your team.
I've been unable to find out about diesel engines on the Koru. Wikipedia doesn't know and Google can't find it either.
Yet I see on your channel and others the Koru at sea with no sails flying but pulling a pretty impressive wake.
So there must be some pretty impressive diesel engines that no one talks about. So much for being green.
Love your channel.
Most likely a diesel/electric setup.
It's all about image.
Nobody is going to build a modern sailing yacht without a motor to use. Moving into marinas and also moving when there’s no wind.
Also there’s photos of the yacht with full sails. And as we monitor the yacht we know they move under sail quite often.
@@eSysmanSuperYachts thanks for this info. i've wondered myself.
i also wonder, with a sailing vessel so dynamically unlike others, other than sea trials who know's what the limits of a boat like this could be (other than theoretical)? I wonder if bezos challenges his boat and the crew to learn the vessel's true nature? If he even cares?
Part time green is better than no green.
Love your channel!!! Quick question, why would the support vessel have 30 plus crew when they can only ever have 4 guests? Do some of those crew actually belong to the main boat?
Because the yacht still needs to be fully crewed and they are operating all the equipment that would usually be on the main yacht. Tenders, helicopter, etc.
Great stuff btw.👍
is the helicopter deck an elevator or something? How do they move the helicopter into a hanger?
I was wondering the same thing.
Yes
That support-boat has 95 apprentice deckhands onboard for that kind of labor.
They are Amazon warehouse workers. They won the vacation.
Yes, there is lift that raises up to the flight deck.
Fun Fact... What truly ended the tall ships era in New York harbour was they couldn't get under the Brooklyn Bridge when it was built
Love all the "insider stuff"!
Always excellent insights & photography 😊
The masts are a bit higher then this, on the drone you can see the horizon is way lower then the top of the rig. An interesting fact on these masts. The top of the masts have a hinch at about 60m hight and can be folded back to get to the panamax hight which is the hight you can have to pass through. This process takes some time and has to done by professionals so it is not a push button system. These rigs are closer to 80m
"Some cracking boats in the marina today"..... mate, you've got that right!
Has Koru left already Marine Traffic shows Corsica. Or is that a different Koru
37 crew!!! It really is another world LOL
Great video 🙂
I don't know how many of you noticed Maltese Falcon in the background. The only square-rigged mega yacht ever built (by Perini Navi). I saw her last week anchored outside Monte-Carlo.
It's most likely the Black Pearl. They are similar but the Black Pearl was launched in 2016 and is about 20% larger.
@@qsikbk1 Thank you! How can I tell them apart?
Ship has been commissioned for several weeks now. The only surprise is that it hasn't had a fire and sank yet. 😮😂
It is not Russian
Not keen on the music but great content as always
Great video thanks for sharing… 🙏
Absolutely perfect sponsored add!! Good job on fitting that in!!
It's a beauty! I tend to prefer the sleeker boats as opposed to the ones that look like mini cruise ships. My favorite however is the mighty Octopus.
Would love to see this under sail.
You lost me at NordVPN. 😅
Good Video as always
Just returned from a trip with the "super yacht" of 1931, the "Sea Cloud". With 50 passengers and 60 crew.
The lady is 92 years old now and still going strong. (110/15m, 31 sails)
Will the Koru reach that age?
Definitely.
Koru pronounced core ru is a Maori word for the spiral shaped new fern frond which symbolises new beginnings. It is the symbol if Air New Zealand. Curious as to why Jeff chose it for his yacht.
Trying to be cool would be my guess. Personally I wish he’d leave NZ out of it.
Same when they buy a jet. It enters service and then niggles or things that are not quite right get fixed at a warranty period input. Usually to coincide with the first hours/calendar service input.
Excellent video! 💕
Very educational. TY for the behind the curtain commentary about decompressing and life on a new boat.
Great video as always. Question: is it a trend to have a support boat now ? I started to see a few in Mediterranean sea lately
What I don't understand with Jeff' s budget is why he wouldn't have rollers to keep the main body level as the boat keels. Would be a lot of engineering for safety and functionality. Even under minor wind, with the size of the sails, quality of life would be far higher without leaning.
You won't see much heel in a vessel that size in normal wind conditions and when they need to I am sure they can control it with that sail plan. Unless they are caught in a squall it is probably no more than 5 degrees. You want a small amount of heel for the boats performance as well.
@@ericboyle8296t is a sailing yacht, heeling is part of the joy of sailing. Besides he has options, he drop off to go to the support vessel or take the chopper to anywhere 😎
Not sure those masts can be considered around 60m, judging by the horizon when the drone is flying at 60m. Estimating with a stick held against my screen, the section above the horizon is about 1/4 the size of the section below the horizon. We know that what is below the horizon is 60m, so that implies the masts have an extra 15m-ish above 60. All a bit rough, but I think we can be reasonably confident they're closer to 70m than 60m
The S/Y black pearl casually chilling in the background
The crew number on the support yacht is huge.
S/Y Koru has a look and feel of the Royal Yacht Britannia
I like his Kenny Powers moment on the jet ski
how does the helicopter get in and out of the hanger?
"What's wrong with it?".... Its hideous.
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEOOOO!
The Ocean Race will be finishing in Genova shortly .. so there is that. I was lucky enough to be invited aboard Team Malizia for a tour when they came through Newport
it looks ok.....I would have done it differently.....
Love your show
Eric
Really well done video! Thanks for the enormous effort doing a piece like this requires. Buonanotte e arrivederci from the USA!
What Yacht is behind your left shoulder at the 4:14 mark??? The Grey one....
EPIC!!!! MEAN VIDEO ESYSMAN 😅😊😂❤ WOOOWWW
Bezos prolly uses Starlink... But I predict it is very well disguised
Great fun following you around 👍😊!
I'm pretty sure he has Starlink somewhere therre. The utility is so good, that it would be very stubborn and stupid to not provide good internet for the crew and guests on board.
My guess is hidden in a dome
The gdp of some countries in one part of a harbour.
Scooter Brown was on the motorboat with Jeff … crazy
Great video as usual! Thanks for always interesting content. BTW I want YOUR job. 😂
Thanks! There is a flight restriction on your drone? I have not heard of that. Is it an Italian policy?
Height restriction as were under the flight path if an airport. All DJI drones have this.
@@eSysmanSuperYachts I see. Big thanks! Great video!
Navy ships do the exact same thing. After they’ve been delivered to the Navy and used for several months, they go back into the ship yards to have items fixed, replaced, upgraded, etc… to meet changed requirements for the ship since it was first conceptionalized and bid on by the ship yards. The ship is first built to the original specifications, then it gets changed to the updated specifications after it’s been delivered to the Navy. Frankly, having served in the Navy, I think it’s a huge waste of money. The ships should be built to the upgraded specifications the first time around.
So many pretty ships in one place, you are a lucky guy!
I love this yacht. Classic White Star Line throwback to the days of Olympia Titanic and Britannica. The man has sophisticated style.
Cheak our man here with the cinematic shots yesss !!!!
Think the bowsprit figurehead is having some work done.
I believe I saw this boat in Pensacola FL a couple of weeks ago.
The “air draft” (i.e., mast height) is reportedly 70 meters (230 feet)
If your drone had been able to go higher so that. The line of sight between the drone and horizon lined up with the top of the mast then the atlatude of the drone is the same as the top of mast.
What are the two boats either side of your head at 4:24?
One gold one dark grey
We may have to rename the Koru 'the Albatross'
From one crew member to another, can't you ask those people having the bbq for a tour? I'm sure Jeff would be cool with it. Do you have Prime?
at 06:55 l clicked all the links in the description and the video is not there
37 people on the support vessel.
Bezos koru sailboat design very likely has a center board ballast keel which is typical and of course a bulb. For biw wave technology. A better design would keel the headsails with a French keel that is deepest point is at the midpoint between the mast and forestay of the largest sail. Then straight back to the shallowest point which is the stern the ballast would be in the same location and wt but doesn't interfere with the keeling design stem to stern academic keeling design. This design reduces heeling over and increases speed while improving rudder control in high wind.
Tere are parts that i made on that ship i work for the company that made the hull sections not oceanco but Zwijnenburg
Koru is a gorgeous float.
Welcome in my city, Genova😍
Video is good, but the music is awful. I hope the crew had a great bbq!
Don't know what it is, but SY Koru looks borderline ugly to me. The raised bow is sexy on an Explorer but personally I don't like the look for a SY at all. The side view is … boring with a random mix of wood and white. And from the stern it looks bulky with the second deck being as wide as the first deck.
Not that my opinion matters at all. Just wonder if you guys like the look.
It is different.
So many of the super yachts were all starting to look alike.
"Borderline ugly" is exactly right. The rig is fine, but the deckhouses look all wrong to me. Either of my 32'/40' sloops looked better than this thing. To go unlimited like this, I would have gotten an exterior designer. Likely some Italian industrial-type guy.
FASCINATING AS ALWAYS❤
Black Pearl now that is a sailing yacht amazing lines and character.
Fabulous wealth and fabulous ships. Thank you. Fine effort.
And thanks for your stupid comment.
The gold boat behind you looks like 54 Knots!
Was that DB9 behind your right shoulder?
Was looking at Black Pearl last week & so wanted to get nearer - what a beauty! ❤
Another great video. I'd love to be at that bbq. 🔥🔥🔥
Koru do have Starlink. You can see them ( two ) on top of the bridge. Stop the video at 0:49 and you see them.
I'm supriced you're not talking more about the fact that the two biggeste sailing yachts are next to each other, especially when Black Pearl have been sitting still for a long time.
This is like the serfs being allowed into the castle courtyard to gawk.
0:17 midships reminds me of a motel
Thank you.
I personally know the interior designer's of The Black Pearl and The Maltese Falcon...
Surely things like engines and AV aren't bespoke. How they interact with each sure, but engine manufacturer would rarely engineer an engine for a one off
It sails along the seabed 🤣😂🤣
They've yet to make a profolactic large enough to fit that pinial extension.
