Awesome progress on the property , and yes I feel that a tractor investment would be a game changer for you . One advantage would be you can use it year round ! Won't be parked for 5-6 months 👍

Why do bears have to be so cute 😂 we had one snooping around last night and when we turned the light on he looked dazed and confused and just sat there for 3 minutes until I told Greg he better scare the sh** out of him so he doesn’t come back

I’ve been watching yours vids of late and really enjoy your stick-to-it life of being off the grid. I was born & raised in Michigan down around Lansing area. Spent many summers in the UP where most everything is sand based.
I don’t know anything about shelters or root cellars. However, recommend removing the trees near the edges of your hole. You don’t want a storm or tornado knocking them over on top of your future shelter and trapping y’all in the shelter. I spent several years in the Navy in Submarines. Make sure you have at least 2 exits that are strong and positioned so as not to be blocked by debris.
    Bill

First, Congratulations on your expert tree felling and safety tips for sure! You did the right thing borrowing a machine, now you know what it can and can't do and you have a better idea of what you want to look for when purchasing. The bear family is hysterical and they are known to do that to bird feeders and will be back now that they have found food. Probably bring them in for the night going forward for a while of no sightings. A big corrugated pipe would be nice and easy for you to use, you still have to close off the ends and seal. But easier than concrete. Look at atlas survival shelters for some ideas of how to layout the floor and entrance. He has a you tube channel.

Is that big hole for another outhouse, lol!!! That tractor 🚜🚜🚜 will definitely help you dig a deeper hole next time around. Not saying thaat the last hole wasn't deep enough, just saying.
I don't blame you for wanting to install a storm shelter, especially with all the bad weather we've been having. Praying for your safety as well as your animals and your entire property.

My daughter lives in tornado alley in Texas and have a shelter in their bkyd. That's pretty common there although the storms see to be moving east over Dallas.
Glad you're getting a tractor. All the off grid videos I watch they wind up getting a tractor at some point. A Very handy toolbar 🚜 Hope no storms come your way.❤

We have a TYM Tractor 2515H and absolutely love it. We are in Michigan also (Williamsburg/Kalkaska area) and bought it through John in Buckley at United Truck Sales. We have off-grid property (16 acres of Red Pines) and our common comment to each other is "what did we ever do without this tractor" . What a life saver it has been.
TYM may even sponsor you 😉. They sponsor many UA-camrs. Let us know if you're in our area and you can take it for a test drive at our pines 😊

Bears are a pain with bird feeders, including hummingbird feeders! Went nose to nose with one over my feeders! Had one hanging from the soffit of my roof and heard something tapping on the window. Opened the curtain and there stood a huge black bear with my hummingbird feeder in his front paws! I was less than 3’ from him and started beating the window! He let go and ran off. The next night he came back and crushed the feeder.. they are a real pain 😡

Root cellar is a great idea! I have seen a few channels with this setup. There is a guy in Saskatchewan that stores some of his food underground. I'm not sure if he has a video about it. Ill check. Also... doesn't A different kind of quiet have a root cellar? Anyway, look forward to seeing this progress! We unfortunately will always have to build above ground...unless we blast some rock! Oooh...that would be fun. 😂😂😂. Good job on the trees Jay. Those darn rotten poplars are awful to deal with

Check out Simple Living Alaska. They purchased a Branson tractor. I think they drove down from Alaska to pick it up - not sure where they got it. Anyway, they seem to really like the quality and durability. Theirs might be more than you need but likely the brand has other models. Good luck!

I always thought a small tractor like the one you borrowed would be ideal. 4x4 for sure. You can do a lot with the back ho and you could plow snow with the bucket too. Also lifting or moving things. Only bad part is the price of those things, LOL.

Quick thoughts on the shelter, please don't do a dry pour for your structure, and use rebar. It's too important to skimp on it. Drainage can also be a problem, some people's shelters have actually been lifted by water seeping under. I'm going to be watching with great interest, it's a project we're thinking about too. All the best to you both, and the pups too.

    • @OffgridwithJayandJen

Don't think we'd do dry pour in it, just gotta figure out what we're doing, many different ways to do so and have to figure out what works best for us.

Never put a root cellar near trees. If a storm comes through with high winds, the trees can fall over the cellar & trap you or crush you. It should be in a hillside with no dangers nearby to trap you.

Sad to see what happened to the birdfeeders, those darn bears! I hope they were salvageable at least. If so, they know where to find them now. Will you have to move them someplace else ? Or it doesn't matter, they will find them no matter where they are? I’d say first thing is to drop those trees that are around that hole before you ever crawl into it . Also sand is quite unstable so for gosh sake be careful that it doesn’t collapse while you are inside . Try to at least shore up the sides with some kind of bracing. And use Jen as your spotter as you work. Never alone. ❤😊😊
