If the movie will influence your beliefs, thoughts, decisions and actions that is something against the teachings of God, then I believe that it is ‘wrong’ to watch. And, if the horror stories encourages you to do something that will likely fall into ‘sin’, then I believe that it is ‘sinful’ to watch. Basically, we have to be careful what information (audio/visual/written) we feed in our mind and soul. I may be wrong, but this is my perspective and opinion.
Obviously it depends on the genre. If by horror we just mean a scary story, then obviously that is fine. I think horror movies can even show gore. Where I think it would be wrong to watch a horror movie would be when the intention of the movie is to show gore and human suffering *for its own sake* so that others can delight in that suffering. So, I think most "slasher" movies are made for the purpose of the audience to delight in the different ways people can be mutilated. This would seem to be an obvious disordered pleasure.
Matt, I would like to add, it seems to me that a Horror film has, as it's object, horror. Hence the name of the genre. Compare that to a film like The Passion of the Christ. While it has what one might consider an element similar to that found in a horror movie, with the brutal and even grotesque depiction of the passion our Lord suffered, horror isn't the object of the film. Seems obvious enough, but I think it's an important distinction to make. Is that what you're getting at with your argument? If so, I would argue that it ceases to be a horror film and would fit into a different genre.
I would submit to you that horror, being defined as that which is “described as an intense feeling of shock, fear or disgust” is not sinful to watch for a multitude of reasons. Hansel and Gretal may be horrifying, but they teach a lesson to children that they might otherwise forget being told in a different way: strangers can oftentimes be danger so beware! The shows “Penny Dreadful”, “Hannibal”, or “American Horror Story” come to mind as well as Stephen King’s books and movies. “Penny Dreadful” is a fascinating television show which portrays all of the literary characters created during the Gothic Era: Dracula and his intended victim Vanessa Ives, Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde, Victor Frankenstein and his monster the modern Prometheus, Dorian Grey in all of his debauchery and wickedness, among many others. Vanessa Ives once states, “I have a complicated history with the Almighty”. Doesn’t everyone? The manservant is once asked if he believes in God and he replies that he believes in everything. Victor Frankstein stoutly insists that he “believes in everything but God”. Their beliefs, what they set as their end, determine their actions. It’s horrifying, but captivating. “We have all done things to survive,” Ethan once admits, “There are such sins at my back it would kill me to turn around”. If a person were to tell me Ethan’s journey, all of their journeys through the vale of tears in this horror of a life that is a gift that they have made their Hell because of what they have set as their end is sinful to watch, then something is lost on you, I think. Granted, not everyone can take the nudity that show has, and that is a different story if you don’t just skip through it if you could and okay, I understand. However, from a horror aspect, something is definitely lost on you if you find it inherently sinful. The fascinating theme amidst all of the horror portrayed in this one television show is that all of them have a fascinating relationship with God that ends in a peculiar way. I find that horror oftentimes portrays the ways in which people are disordered in the sense that they are attracted to the good in lesser things and set that as their end. Horror is, oftentimes, the path of setting other things outside of God as your end. It’s a cautionary tale, I would say. Even in “Hannibal”, there are so many religious undertones. Hannibal, in the show, is once found saying “No one can be fully aware of another human being unless we love them. By that love, we see potential in our beloved. Through that love, we allow our beloved to see their potential. Expressing that love, our beloveds potential comes true.” Is there not some thread of truth there to be pondered? Another quote: “Forgiveness is too great, and difficult, for one person…It takes two, the betrayer and the betrayed. Are you the betrayer, or the betrayed?…Betrayal and forgiveness are best seen as something akin to falling in love.” It’s a story of sin, of betrayal, of human weakness and wickedness. It is undoubtedly horror. Remember, Doctor Lecter is a cannibal. However, there are lessons to be gleaned in the story that remind me ever so much of God’s relationship with His creation. Now, films are different. I’ve not watched many horror movie outside of Stephen King’s, and the old “It” is what first comes to mind, the first film not the newer one. That was a fascinating film. It was not scary to me in the slightest. The fact that the monster named It tried so hard to bully and scare the children both as children and adults, the fact that the rest of the town ignored the deaths, ignored the bullying, ignored the injustice that occurred…there is something deeper there that is worth exploring, pondering, giving more than a moment’s thought I say. Frightening just for the sake of frightening with pop up scares doesn’t help someone understand anything. Frightening someone, however, with intricate storylines and scenes meant to get under your skin in a way that pop ups can’t reminds us of our nature or perhaps gives us something to meditate about our nature that could help us to understand ourselves and others in ways we didn’t before. Like all genres, horror is art. Art is meant to be experienced. But not all romance and not all horror is art or inherently sinful. Just something to think about.
Dracula, (1931), with Bela Lugosi was my First Catechism. As a 5 y.o. watching the Million Dollar Movie 5x in one week, I had written on my Heart: 1. Evil exists! Not just mistakes, accidents and errors. 2. Man, no matter how educated or strong, cannot defeat it alone. 3. We must place our Trust in Jesus Christ and Him Crucified. Thank you Prof. Van Helsing, (Edward Van Sloan), my First Catechist.
Thank you for this video!! I am a Christian, and I love The Gospel of our Father’s Grace!!! And simultaneously I enjoy october, halloweentime, and scary or spooky movies, and i have never felt there was anything wrong simply because i enjoy them for enjoyment-sake and nostalgia, and there is no evil motive. Its a taste thing. Its a genre i am drawn to, and some people dont understand my viewpoint, but i am glad you made this video!!! Thank you, sir!
I like to think that they fall in the same category as video games, movies, and other media. So long as you come with the point that what you are watching/doing is not real then you will be okay

I used to love horror movies. The Conjuring Series, the Saw films, Silent Hill franchise, anything of that nature. When I started praying the Rosary daily and being more devoted to my faith, I am ashamed to even have liked these films. I know Our Lady would not approve and neither would God. Me personally, I think it's sinful to watch such movies and enjoy them without blinking an eye. God did not intend mankind to degrade itself to such a level of violence and fright, real or not. Horror films, especially nowadays, is something you'd see in Hell. I would strongly encourage anyone to NOT watch horror movies and if tempted, say a prayer instead to Our Lady guiding you to watch something more peaceful and wholesome...
Totally agree. Horror movies can also be very perverse and feature pornographic scenes. They’re definitely not for chaste eyes or someone pursuing the narrow path
I think that being scared reminds us of our mortality, because what is fear but mechanism to prevent us from dying, but having that in mind, if we remember our mortality, we remember how we live matters which can move us to live more moral and God centered lives TLDR: Horror is related to memento mori

When I first read Frankenstein I was hesitant because people said it was horror, but after I read it I felt so close to God because it’s themes on power and natural law were so profound and WRITTEN BEAUTIFULLY. I was sad that people wouldn’t read it because people called it horror thus making it a sin to them

Matt, it would be cool if you could interview Catholic revert author Dean Koontz. His Odd Thomas books are masterpieces of horror with a spiritual foundation.
I'll second that! Koontz is the catholic master of horror. His Odd Thomas series is deeply spiritual. Never have I encountered a fictional world that is so sacramental like that of Koontz.
I believe that the desire to watch horror movies stems from an innate sinful fascination with morbid things. I find myself intrigued and drawn by the genre but I choose to abstain 100%. I believe it is sinful. There are so many grotesque and obscene things depicted in horror movies. What does darkness have in common with light? I ask myself would be comfortable watching this movie with the Lord Jesus next to me?

Hey Matt! I would love to see a longer video on this topic. I love to see a list of reasons why some people think that it is okay and others who think it is a good thing. I would love to get into the mind of people who love horror. I grew up not watching anything like it so when I started American Horror Story which I turned off in a few minutes because I saw some kids face trapped in barb wire, my mind could not comprehend why a Catholic could enjoy watching this. I can only assume that what they are watching subjectively is completely different. Again would love to hear more about this!

When I first watched the horror movie Insidious. I had a fantasy ending in my mind. I imagined that the family was Catholic and throughout the movie they prayed to St. Michael on occasion or references were made to St. Michael in the movie. And then at the end when the Demon has the father on the ropes and the boy trapped by the other "foul spirits" and suddenly the movie is muted to complete silence and a piercing light envelops the screen and we hear the sound of fierce flames, the flapping of wings, and the unsheathing of a sword. Then epic Gregorian Music plays in the background as the foul spirits and the demon are dispatched with extreme prejudice.
The sociological commentaries developed from horror movies are amazing and worth delving into. I think it’s also good to watch comedy’s and religious movies but dystopian works especially are extremely thought provoking. Highly recommend the Purge series, it’s definitely far more deep than people realize

Somebody once told me, “Art doesn’t have a soul”. It’s the interpretation and/or value somebody puts on art to make it a good or bad thing. I like the example that was made about the romance genre. I agree with this video. It’s up to how mature or what mindset the viewer has.
"It’s the interpretation and/or value somebody puts on art to make it a good or bad thing." This is relativism. With that mindset you can justify everything, like porn or snuff films.
@@gambinalvarezjesusdavid3454 Relativism is what’s true to a specific person. Different from what is true in general. Truth and relativism are two different things. That’s why Art can be relative to a specific person depending on their level of maturity. Obviously watching porn is not correct at any level of maturity, because that is TRUE in our moral beliefs. But there are different forms of Art that one can say are not bad just by looking at it. For example a painting or, in this case, a horror film. That type of Art is what can be relatively true to a person. What do you think?
I am not a horror fan by any means, but I don't get the immediate response by some people to label watching it a mortal sin. Excellent as always Mr. Fradd 🙂

I never liked watching horror movies even before I had a deeper conversion in my Catholic faith because it makes me paranoid. Strangely enough after finding out who Jesus is it gave me the courage to want and try to watch horror/thriller series, but it didn't sit well for me because of the occult tendencies such films show, I know it's not a good thing to do thus watching it made me feel guilty. Thank you so much for this discussion ❤
On one hand, it's helped me remember/process some memories of the severe spiritual afflictions I've experienced. On the other hand, it has sometimes opened the window wider to it. To my perception, horror films tend to communicate more honestly the reality of evil than anything else, second perhaps to only exorcists and victim-survivors. But now the horror "industry" is treated as a conduit for mortal sin to be committed and a rationalization when it comes to the committing of mortal sin. Ultimately, it boils down to whether our watching horror films pleases or offends God/Christ, and equally as much as whether their being produced pleases or offends Him, and equally as much as whether the content within the production pleases or offends Him.

Some people are so radical that they think anything outside of prayer and mortification in ones spare time is sinful.. as with most things it depends on the intention you obviously don’t want to glorify evil but if you’re mature and have a strong faith then some Halloween make up and bad acting shouldn’t shake you too much

I’m Catholic, and I am fond of horror/thriller movie and shoes and my family is always saying as a Catholic it’s not good to watch stuff like that, but I really learn a lot about my faith and appreciation about my faith in God. I will say, I do like being scares and throughout time I have overcome being scared of those types of things, but I am very selective about what horror movies I watch that are super super dark and scary. But all in all, I do like the genre of horror then romance films. Way more interesting
The Exorcist is not a horror film imo. One issue is that demons with use and exaggerate the visions taken in by the senses and memory. And that can lead to not only not leading and growing in virtue but obsession and possession.

My rule with horror movies is to avoid anything about demons or ghosts. I was born in October and I do like watching horror movies and love Halloween. My favorite kind are the cheesy ones where I can just brush it off as silly and stupid. I think it's like the person in the video said. It depends on the person. Some people get way too into it and let it affect them unnaturally. For me, I like laughing at them and looking at them like spooky stories rather than give it any true power.

Some exorcists also claim nonsense like "The Spells in Harry Potter are real and connected to Wicca", when they CLEARLY are not. I have a background in Wicca and know that for a fact. The magic of Harry Potter is entirely different to Wiccan perception of Magic and the spells are literal commands. (Just in Latin, to make it sound fancy.)
If it’s a Catholic priest who said this, then it would be wise to listen to what he is saying. I used to be a horror movie junkie (during my times of constantly living in sin and not striving to live 100% for God). Now that my focus is on pleasing God in all that I do, I find that I don’t even want to watch horror movies anymore. All i would be doing by watching horror movies is inviting unclean thoughts and words into my mind. And if it’s an exorcist who is saying this, he’s obviously saying it for a reason. He has probably dealt with possessions that started off with this and then it just snowballed. Think of a criminal who committed armed robbery. That crime was the result of years of sin after sin which eventually snowballed into armed robbery.
@@seanmcelroy9774 Catholic priests are far from infallible. There's a story about my great aunt shopping around until she found a priest who told her contraception was ok. I know another priest who said it's not ok to believe in evolution...despite the fact that Pope St. JP2 literally wrote a letter saying it is (we don't have to believe in it, but we're allowed to). I think it's ok to take what a priest says with a grain of salt.
@@JP2GiannaT I don’t disagree that some priests lead people astray. It’s more relevant now than it has ever been. But by really diving in our faith, it will help me decipher if what is being said is wrong or right. Obviously this can only be done by God’s graces. I do not recall seeing anything in the Catechism about horror movies but what he is saying makes sense. And I would rather cut out some movie and spend that time reading the Bible or praying or reading the Catechism.
It's in the same area as Lord of the Rings, or Narnia Chronicles, isn't it? A kind of fantasy. Good fantasy gives a suggestion of what'll happen later if you stay on the path; good horror suggests what'll happen if you stray off the path.

Horror movies are absurd, I put them in the same category as Marvel movies (incoming). Yes I agree with Martin Scorsese.😂 The movies/shows I find scary the ones where the stuff can actually happen eg serial killer series, the skating movie where one national skating champion pays someone to baseball bat the knee of her main rival. Movies that delve into the human psyche and frail mind.

Yeah it’s really about context of the person and the story. I recently played Earthbound, and though most of the game is fun quirkiness, the end is one of the creepiest horrifying endings in video games. But! It ends with a Christian vibe. Where something akin to an outside force (god) Saves the heroes after they defeat a satan like being, and their souls resurrect back. Very very religious experience for me and instilled my faith that something feels right about the Christian motif So to me horror is relative and context dependent. It can’t be just ‘Ooh scary, therefore bad’
Yeah, you literally have to pray to defeat him, ahaha. I never noticed how it's like they die, descend into Hell, defeat the devil with prayer, then resurrect.

Similar things can be said with listening to Dio and Black Sabbath. I believe, as long as one is authentically searching for and/or growing in faith, not mocking. . .not refusing to mature. . .going to the Truth to be set free, it is plenty good to listen and reflect on the lyrics and musical score. They can watch the silver screen. *But some words of caution.* *Catholics, Orthodox, Christians:* Listen with Christ and be sure to grow in faith. Set your house upon Rock to not be washed away and battered, especially by a song of hard rock or horror film. Know your state of faith, your relationship with Christ and His Church, do not take them for granted. *All others:* you must continue to search and know there are powers at work, for good and for evil. You can't simply proceed thinking there is no effect to your cause to listen or watch. Something that appears harmless, which more often than not is, may be your trap. The occult, the demonic is no joke. A number of people fallen trap to it were those who shrugged it off. And, while it is plenty possible to get out of the dark mire, it's essentially impossible to do so on one's own efforts, as quicksand pulls you down when you move without help. In closing: Don't be, to borrow from Black Sabbath, _lost children of the sea._ Know where you stand and where you rest. Know _this goes on and on and on_ . . . it's a matter of light and dark. . . _it's Heaven and Hell_ .

I used to love horror movies when I was younger but after I've found Christ, I really don't find them appealing anymore. Looking back they made me scared of unnecessary things, especially in the dark or even serial killers. They kind of degrade the thought of Christ as your protection, and make you think you are in control of everything that happens in your life. I don't think they are a sin but they might degrade the way you look at life and humans. If they are the type that you just laugh at with friends then they shouldn't be a problem. But there are some new ones out that have a lot of evil in them or even desecrate our Lord and those are to be avoided for sure. It can be a path to near occasion of sin if consumed regularly.

As an aspiring horror writer (I haven’t been able to publish anything just yet), it’s difficult for many to enjoy the horror genre without sexuality. I, for one, cannot stand sexuality within any genre. It’s unneeded, it’s filler, and it’s drawback appeal for the audience. I believe if you enjoy the horror genre because it shows how evil can easily manifest itself in our lives, and the struggle to fight the darkness with the light, that’s good! Who doesn’t love a real story about good versus evil? I’m trying to write an authentic Catholic horror story while consulting my priest on all matters of the faith. It’s hard to keep writing, though, when no one wants to read your work. One can become easily discouraged.

There's nothing wrong with horror as a genre per se. It's just that a lot of the contemporary horror is completely focused on sheer tastelessness and cheap shock value. There has been some great horror, particularly in literature. Good horror generally isn't graphic. Good horror isn't a celebration of evil and the demonic. An orgy of death and general graphic gruesomeness is really never good horror. In the best of horror stories, the mere implication of evil or a looming threat tends to be enough to send shivers down your spine, and to make you feel concern for the protagonist(s) well-being. Which I think is where most modern horror in film and television (including streaming services) goes off the tracks: in much of modern horror the emphasis is almost entirely on the evil, and anyone else is just there to be a victim of that evil. We don't get to know those characters, so we don't empathize with them when they're in danger, and the fate that befalls them is just presented as a cheap thrill for the audience's viewing pleasure. The viewer is encouraged to root for the demonic, and supposed to laugh, cheer and be generally entertained when human life is snuffed out, without it serving any sort of grander narrative purpose. This is dehumanizing and presents a really warped worldview where human life has no value, and seeing it ended in some gruesome fashion becomes pretty much the sole focus of the entertainment (and I use that word very loosely). And that, by definition, makes that type of horror just plain bad, exploitative, and morally questionable. Good horror is great, but a lot of horror unfortunately is of the cheapest, sleaziest variety.
I think “Horror” might be too broad a brush. I think there is a major difference between watching the original Frankenstein verses watching the more modern horror movies like the Saw movies. I think most people who pray and submit to Church teaching would realize that it is a sin to watch something like the Saw movies. From Psalm 101 “I did not set before my eyes any unjust thing: I hated the workers of iniquities.”
It's called knowing the Enemy, more so when they are based on true stories and legends. We have to at least have a basic understanding of who and what we are fighting with faith.
When I watched The Witcher on Netflix for the first time. My cousin was pointing out demonic things in the show like Yennefer’s transformation for example and he told me “that it’s good so that I know who the enemy is”
I think it's extremely dependent upon the faith intelligence of the individual. I don't care for horror but the senseless shooting in action movies appeal to me. I guess we all have our own likes of good vs. evil. But we must always be acutely aware of where our entertainment leads us. There is but on true God

Horror films are no different from any other film genre. They are there to entertain, if being shocked entertains you. There are some really well made horror films that I love watching. I am a Christian and have a great relationship with God and Yeshua. Watching a horror film is not harmful to anyone. What is more harmful, watching horror films or being addicted to drugs? Horror films don't lead you away from the path as drugs and alcohol do. And at the end of the film, you've had a jolly good time.
Horror is a perfect genre for Christians, the picture of Dorian gray is one of the best horror stories, because of how deeply catholic in its understanding of the effects of sin on the soul. Oscar wilde is a brilliant writer.
I enjoy the suspense, I've never actually been SCARED by horror. I mostly only watch found footage/mockumentaries, pretty much all of which deal with some kind of unknown, unseen monster like bigfoot, or with the supernatural (ghosts/demons). The camerawork in these movies intentionally isn't the best, so the focus is more on atmosphere and fear of the unknown rather than excessive violence and special effects. They almost never have good endings, and even though I know the movies are just stories, they (especially the supernatural-themed ones) help to remind me that stuff like that is real and shouldn't be messed with, like when I was younger and my friends wanted to try out ouija boards or levitating and I flat out refused. Without horror movies I wouldn't NOT believe in demons, the occult etc, but I'm definitely way more conscious of that reality because of horror movies. I don't really judge people on watching more conventional horror movies, but at some point I think you have to draw a line with all of the violence and human suffering and sexual scenes, though I don't know where that line is.

I agree with the answer given here. However, I think that something was left out of grave importance. It is true that horror cannot be intrinsically evil. Yet, some horror flicks and stories due contain intrinsically wicked things within them. So I think it is very important to discern between acceptable stories and ones that are forbidden. It is very common in contemporary horror films to show sexual sin, and glorify blasphemous words. I would however love to see a remerging of Catholic themed and moral horror stories - using fear to remind people of what's most important in life and to lead people back to God.

Hmm i think "horror" as a genre should be properly defined here first. Also, Matt should've clarified what type of horror he is referring to, for I dont think he was referring to a different type of horror (since he referred to Hansel and Gretel, idk). The comment section has become a bit messy.
One could say that instead of spending hours a month watching "grotesque" movies, one could increases his/her appreciation for beauty, spend more time learning something that increase one's love of harmony, the transcendent. That's not to say one shouldn't recognize the works and actions of Satan in society. But to indulge in it is another matter. Learn an instrument, a craft, pray instead. Satan works through much of these horror movies, which are way more satanic in nature than "horror" in nature. One is bombarding one's mind with sounds and images, and eventually be used by Satan to incite fear at any moment of vulnerability.

Horror, especially the exorcist, which I looked on as a comedy when It first came out, can and has scared people so much that it led them closer to God. I know a man that never went to bed without a crucifix under his pillow after he had seen it. I always loved horror films and nothing could scare me, until I saw the 70s flick, the Texted Chain Saw Massacre when I was 36yrs old and that put me off them for a few years I can tell ya. Lol But, change the title of your video as it does not address the issue of sin. It's very misleading, but I love your videos.

I love horror movies a lot though horror movies dont exactly influence a person in a bad way (not necessarily) , science doesnt show us that , kind of like how video games dont cause children to be violent , that has already been debunked . I agree that distorting nature is not good but horror movies are more about what the human imagination can create in its own mind specifically horrible things and thats what terrifies us because we dont understand what they are , you know like HP Lovecraft , Halloween movie etc.

Well, I just don't watch them because I'm too young to be wearing adult diapers. Unless it's something clearly "silly" like those films with Bruce Campbell. (Note, in those films: Good triumphs, but sometimes the good guy loses as well because he was a bit too prideful, like in one of the endings to "Army of Darkness".)

@@AdventureDaddyTv I'm not here to pick a fight. But can we agree on Lord of the Rings and The Narnia Chronicles being "safe" Christian stories? Both Lewis and Tolkien were Christian (although not of precisely the same denomination) , and both include "horror" elements (in Tolkien, both Gollum and Shelob, Sauron and the Nazgul; Lewis' Narnia is a bit more child friendly, but it was scary to me as child, both 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' and 'The Silver Chair'). Can't speak too much about HP since I haven't read the books or watched the films.
@@AdventureDaddyTv "Tolkien works are inspired in Christianity." And Lewis, too - at least "Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe". Aslan being a clear Christ-analogue, willingly sacrificing himself to save another - and then being resurrected. If anything, that was a bit too much "on the nose", far stronger than Tolkien's work. But what I wanted to say - both of them have plenty of horror in them, whether it's that big spider Shelob or how Elves were turned into Orcs...
I've been approached often by fellow christians about how I could enjoy horror movies so kuch even though Im as devout as I am. I usually reply that I feel more demonic vibes from something like Star Trek or Doctor Who than Ive ever felts from a film like Nightmare on Elm Street. Most horror movies illustrate how the demonic is real and you can only defeat them with god and your relationship with him. Evil is always banished by the dark and even if it isn't we know gods light is the only thing that can push them away. Meanwhile, Star Trek and Doctor Who openly say that there is no God, that religion has hindered and hurt mankind and only getting rid of it, gettinf rid of our relationship with God can progress us to a space faring utopia. If something was genuinely demonic, it wouldn't show us how God can defeat the dark. It would tell us there is no god, that the dark is good and that only through our own will and need can we be good.

I am very disappointed with Matt in this segment. The images picked for the cover of this video points to horror as satanic and evil, but they speak of something like The Divine comedy in the segment. Are they likening those two things to be similar to each other? And it is unclear what to decide about horror from their brief conversation. I feel that most of the comments below are actually more true. Certainly the horror as depicted in the cover frame is evil. But, that doesn't seem clear in their conversation. It is so important to be clear, especially today with all of this confusing ambiguity all around us in the Church.

I cannot watch horror films. To me they are very upsetting. A "scary" movie I do like is Signs. That film has some moral messages. I cannot watch slasher films. I can't understand why seeing people brutally murdered is fun. It's twisted. As far as paranormal stuff, I stopped watching paranormal tv shows and will not watch paranormal films. I think I saw The Ring on a date in my twenties. I was terrified. I won't watch movies like The Conjuring, The Nun, etc. I've had enough experiences in real life with scary events including negative spiritual ones. I don't need that too. I also can't read horror books. I don't understand the appeal with Steven King.
I guess part of it depends on what you mean by "horror". "The Rite", "Chucky", "Saw" and "Silence of the Lambs" (Heck, "Scary Movie") are all very different films.

@@Wgaither1 not sure how that verse is relevant without explanation. You don’t prove something is a sin by quoting a Bible verse that doesn’t say it’s a sin.
Disagree with our take? Let me know why you think horror stories are always wrong to watch/read. Open to your arguments.
Almost always have to do with the occult ... not a Christian hobby dude

Well I like Harry Potter it has ghost in it but not real ones
An exorcist said horror movies are openings for the evil spirits to possess a person especially if the one watching is not in a state of grace.
Thats kinda bullshit imho

Very very religious experience for me and instilled my faith that something feels right about the Christian motif
So to me horror is relative and context dependent. It can’t be just
‘Ooh scary, therefore bad’
Yeah, you literally have to pray to defeat him, ahaha. I never noticed how it's like they die, descend into Hell, defeat the devil with prayer, then resurrect.

Similar things can be said with listening to Dio and Black Sabbath.
I believe, as long as one is authentically searching for and/or growing in faith, not mocking. . .not refusing to mature. . .going to the Truth to be set free, it is plenty good to listen and reflect on the lyrics and musical score.
They can watch the silver screen.
*But some words of caution.*
*Catholics, Orthodox, Christians:* Listen with Christ and be sure to grow in faith.
In closing:
Don't be, to borrow from Black Sabbath, _lost children of the sea._ Know where you stand and where you rest.

My cousin was pointing out demonic things in the show like Yennefer’s transformation for example and he told me “that it’s good so that I know who the enemy is”
I just like being scared
Same, Im just addicted to horror movies, I cant think of a saturday night without them
I like the feeling at the end. Like I passed some difficult test.
I think it's extremely dependent upon the faith intelligence of the individual. I don't care for horror but the senseless shooting in action movies appeal to me. I guess we all have our own likes of good vs. evil. But we must always be acutely aware of where our entertainment leads us. There is but on true God

Love of security isn't perfectly natural: we need to see what's in the shadows beyond our reach; what's beyond the ocean; and what's beyond the moon.
There’s a difference between saying something is sinful and saying it’s a good idea for anyone not just Christians
Horror is a perfect genre for Christians, the picture of Dorian gray is one of the best horror stories, because of how deeply catholic in its understanding of the effects of sin on the soul. Oscar wilde is a brilliant writer.
horror films show the true ugliness of evil anyone who thinks they glorify it just doesnt understand the genre

Lol
But, change the title of your video as it does not address the issue of sin. It's very misleading, but I love your videos.

Horror movies are really bad. They are like hell.
I love your profile pic!
St. Gemma is a treasure 💖
@@thecatholiccorner Yes. I love her.
And if they're like hell, then they could be a good warning, right? I don't remember a horror film that's suggesting the horror is actually desirable.
@@thossi09 They could be a warning, but we should not watch them.
@@DaninaPetroskova Well, I don't. But I'm a scarerdy-cat coward, easily jumped, and sometimes think I should watch them just to build up a little immunity to various horrors out there. I've never gotten around to watching something that couldn't also be a comedy (for its over-the-top silliness).
Dunno about sinful, but one of the markers of a psycho girlfriend, at least in my experience, has been an interest in horror films.

It is not.
There's a reason why one of the gifts of the Holy Ghost is the *fear* of the Lord.
I love horror movies a lot though horror movies dont exactly influence a person in a bad way (not necessarily) , science doesnt show us that , kind of like how video games dont cause children to be violent , that has already been debunked .
I agree that distorting nature is not good but horror movies are more about what the human imagination can create in its own mind
specifically horrible things and thats what terrifies us because we dont understand what they are , you know like HP Lovecraft , Halloween movie etc.

Depends on the movie. If there is unnecessary cursing and any sexual content, then yes it is.

Our exorcist Priest discourage us to watch horror movies because it is an opening to demonic possessions.
@@thossi09 this one of the subtle ways of the demon. But nothing beats harry potter not a horror movie but all exorcist priest discourage it its a withcraft/ magic.
@@thossi09 Lewis and Tolkien are not bad infact I rocommend it, Tolkien works are inspired in Christianity.
Hmmmm I perceive most movies these days are off the menu. Picture the movies you would invite Christ to sit down to watch with you. Get my drift :-)

Horror movies don't scare me. Quite dusappointing!😖😂but I do like a good psychological thriller. There aren't many of those these days though. They've all become predictable.
The Wickerman (original version) or Midsomer. Scary.

Can watch the Korean drama, Island? Or is it a sin? Has demons. Great action flick.
God gives us peace but horror movies are made to take away that peace from us.
How?
Notebook was the worst movie I’ve ever seen. Well, it as well as Lady in the Water and The Core. Just awful! Maybe not “horror” in the traditional sense. But their awfulness has horrified my soul for years! 😂

Well...from a certain point of view, Horror movies show a little bit of Hell. In theory, a demon could be doing that to you for all eternity. So, in theory, that horror movie might inspire someone to repent.
What difference does it make, we're all going to hell.

The issue is how you can delight yourself in something that God hates. As Christians, we should not love the things of this world. 1John 2:15.

Strict horror entertainment may not be intrinsically sinful but much of it is unfortunately overflowing with overt inappropriate sexual content.
I just got on here really fast to answer the question in the title of the video: YES
I just dropped a like because you had 666 likes. :P
No Christian should be watching horror films! What is wrong with people?
Why?
Most definitely it’s a mortal sin
Why
@@Anthony-fk2zu Because God is Holy Holy Holy
@@Wgaither1 that doesn’t mean they are a mortal sin.
@@Anthony-fk2zu For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23, ESV)
