I saw a woman on a different site sew using the two needle saddle method. She assumed the viewer knew what she as doing and referencing. I was left in the clouds, dazed and confused. I googled how to... and came across your video. First of all, wow! what a pleasant voice and demeanor you have. I felt like you were my very knowledgeable grandpa patiently teaching me a family handed down trade. I felt special. Thank you for so clearly and patiently explaining what you were doing. Anyone giving this video a thumbs down is simply a troll. I don't normally work with leather, I'm a woodworker, but you have inspired me to consider how leather might be something I could incorporate into my pieces. Thank you!
Just got into leatherworking and went to Tandy to pick up some tools and material to get started. Was overwhelmed with how helpful they were. Learned so much in just the short time I was there. Much appreciated
Wow. Awesome video. Thank you for actually explaining step by step and showing a up close shot of the handy work. I'm always up for new hobbies and this video definitely helped give me confidence in practicing and learning a new trade, the proper way. Your sewing projects in this video looked really wonderful. Again, Thank You for sharing.
Im not interested in leather craft, but have seen this stitch used for various projects in various crafts and was always curious how it was done. Your video has explained it perfectly, in simple clear terms. My curiosity is now satisfied. Thank you.
This was crystal clear on how to do both methods....bravo......great. I agree, watching the video I was thinking I should would have loved to learn what he knows! Fabulous!
Thank you so much George ! You are the best. When I'm looking for a good clear video I know I can always count on you. Most videos now are apt to be unfocused and sometimes they can't keep their hands out of the way. Thank you again I just did my first saddle stitch or any stitch and I'm very pleased with it ! If you ever come to Maine I'll set you up with some lobster , Martha
I've been struggling to get any knot to hold using sinew thread, nothing worked. In a desperate attempt to avoid having to back stitch I did two half hitches (like in the video) and then carefully put a drop of sealing wax (the stuff they use to seal letters with) over the knot and I can't believe how well it works. Since sealing wax is more rubbery than candle wax it doesn't rub off on anything it touches and it actually melds itself to the thread and leather surfaces. I'd have to use sandpaper to get this stuff off. It's amazing.
All done with restitching my phone holster project using the two-needle stitch. I will be making a visit to Tandy Leather in Allen TX when I get a chance.
Thank you very much for making and posting this video. This is very well shot and so clearly and succinctly explained. I need to stitch canvas dor a golding kayak deck and with the information in this video I now have all that I need to make a start..
Lovely how-to. Thank you. Now, could bring the last stitches up through the middle even with the 2 needle method? Or is that just not needed? Seems like the stitches could loosen up on you without some form of knot.
In my workshop, when I put on ma leather, and rock to sum Metallica, Delta Parole, Foo Fighters or the Smashing Pumpkins I feel like I can do anything in the whole wide world.
If you dont punch oversized stitching holes, the leather grabs the thread, keeping it from unraveling. I think he is using oversized holes to aid clarity in this video, and to keep it on the stitch only.
awesome video , but I got a question I just made a belt for a friend of mine and I usually do the single needle stitching, but how much more tread is needed ?? is it 4x more than the length of the belt?? or more ?
THANK YOU FOR THE NICE AND SIMPLE DIRECTIONS..DOES IT MATTER WHICH WAXED THREAD YOU USE. SHOULD I USE A WISE LIKE HOLDER OR JUST HOLD IN HANDS . VERY SIMPLE AND PLAIN; EASY TO UNDERSTAND. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
+Callie Shadow Both are a matter of preference. Some people prefer to use a stitching pony like a third hand, however some people prefer to have the mobility of doing it free hand.
How do you do so many holes so evenly spaced? Do you have some sort of pattern wheel to prick the dots and then just hand punch each one? I have a tool that looks more like a fork with chisel pointed square tines, i thought it might be for stitching leather but your holes are nice and circular. Is there a functional difference that makes one stronger or better?
Awesome video, uummm i have two question for u sir, how to make treble cordovan stitching?? Do u have tutorial video?? If u have, can i see it? Thankyou -im sorry my english not good 😊
With the 2 needle stitch, at the end when you pass the needle to the same side as the other, then cut it off, do you need to tie a knot or anything? thank you
So, after watching, and trying both single and double stitching methods you have posted... which is the better stitch? seems like the single stitch method is easier, but the double seems tighter. What do you recommend/prefer? Great videos!
Hello Nick Gargiulo! A lot of it is personal preference. Al Stohlman recommends the two needle saddler's stitching method in “The Art of Hand Sewing” book.
Hi! Thanks for the tutorial, that was really kind of you. I visited your website, i'd like to purchase the same kind of leather you used in this tutorial. Can you tell me what's it called? Thanka a lot.
I know, old video and I probably won't get an answer, but on an outside chance... For the single-stitch method, shouldn't you start at one end? How would you "go all the way around" a knife sheath or anything else that is open on one end? Maybe it doesn't make a difference. You'll just have one area completely stitched before the other area is started?

Wow this was the easiest and best explanation! Thank you sir for taking your time to teach us some good quality techniques.
Finally, a real decent helpful visible tuitorial on stitching. Thank you so much.

keld101 thank you for the tip this is the first time I've heard of this and it sounds perfect
I've seen people use lighters to burn the end of a stitch i understand it's too melt the stitch to itself and house it, i could be wrong however 😂

Fantastic job. Thank you sir.
so helpful, thank you
What happens to the tag ends? You didn't tie a knot - do you glue them? What keeps the ends from unraveling? Excellent video btw!
If you dont punch oversized stitching holes, the leather grabs the thread, keeping it from unraveling.
I think he is using oversized holes to aid clarity in this video, and to keep it on the stitch only.

Great work! Hey, is there a name for that kind of stitching string?
plejaren giants he is using waxed thread.
@@TandyLeatherCo Oh. Hey thanks again!

Brilliant.
At the end of the saddle stitching, you go back a few stitches, then trim them short. What keeps it from unraveling?
congratulation amazing work that you do!
Thanks

yea I like it, seems sturdy after a nice tug from both sides. Thanks!

You just leave the threads open after you cut them (on the two-needle stitch)?
Do you need to add seam allowance when doing the saddle stitch? Just making a basic flap bag with side panels
Yes you do, just to be safe.
Tandy Leather thank you! Do you recommend 1/4” ? My bag is 10” x 8”
This is so awesome
Thank you, you taught me how to stitch. Ps. I learned that you should tie the ends off or they will unravel.
It still holds well if you don't though...
How do you thread the needle and determine how much thread you should cut off the spool ?
You need 3 to 5 times the x-length of the stitch work - depending on how many holes per inch you have and the thickness of the leather.
great video sir ! Thx
Does the two needle stitch not need a knot at the end?
What kind of leather are you working with here? Cowhide?
thank you
thanks GEORGE!
