In this video, we will be covering hand stitching from start to finish using one of the most common stitches, the saddle stitch. Watch as Chuck demonstrates marking your stitch lines using a leather groover, punching stitch holes with a stitching chisel, stitching with Ritza Tiger Thread, and hammering down the stitch line once you're done.

It would be helpful when you teach the hand stitching to talk about the stitching pony. Us "newbies" need all the information. Chuck, you really are a great teacher - thanks so much.
I love using square know to tie off the end. It just gives me piece of mind that it will stay. Also, when I feel like backstitching, I do it at the beginning as well so that way at least there is some consistency or symmetry to the look.

This seems such an easier way to saddle stitch, I've seen others where they show the needles going through the leather separately but this seems so much more intuitive

Thank you Chuck I have been watching your videos for the last month I have probably watched 40 of them I have learned so much from you I just wanna personally thank you your energy and your ability to teach is second to none I have been saving videos and going back and referencing them to improve my techniques I am brand new to leatherworking bought some basic tools and today I did my first saddlestitch I wasn’t very good at it at first and I sewed about 6 inches and it turned out pretty good not as good as I would like but hey it’s a start so then I popped in this video and watched you again brushed up on my technique and did a better job the second time around so September 2022 I did my first saddlestitching I couldn’t be happier thank you Chuck thank you
Thank you. This is my 1st leather sewing video and I hope to see and learn many more. For years I’ve looked for tool pouch for my basic multitool pouch. So far I’ve gone though countless of big box store pouches and settled for a nylon pouch that holds my Craftsman Professional multitool and my Klein 11-in-One screwdriver. I’m in the process of reverse engineering the pouch then making a pattern for the pouch to suit my needs. I still use my 4D-Cell Maglite leather flashlight hostler for over 25 years and even though carrying this baton gets in the way it never gets lost on an aircraft. Hopefully I’ll be able to have this added to my countless other home and work projects but less is more important when going to fix aircraft. I would hate to carry the added weight of a large tool to remove and replace a panel, bulb or outlet. Thank you for this. Another skill thoughtfully learned. Reg.

Wow. I have been pushing needles through leather just trying to figure out how in the heck they stitch this stuff. Now I get i make tools in my metal shop cause that’s my niche. I just learned 30 hours of work in 20 mins. Thank you !!

Hey, these videos are great! I remember watching my Uncle Bill do leatherworking when I was a young child, it always looked so interesting. I have been unable to work since I was injured in a car accident Dec. 19, 2019 and I need something to do that uses tools, creativity and skills. What better thing to do than leatherworking? Really appreciate the exciting video help from Weaver Leather to get me going!

I am new to leather and just found this video. I want to tell you how helpful it was in one of the most important areas in my recent projects. The detail you provide on the basics like pulling the thread evenly etc. is a huge help. The finer points like making the corner hole at an angle and spacing out the final holes approaching an end are incredibly helpful too and will make my projects look professional.
Beyond the points of sewing I want to compliment you on the way you deliver the content. Your humble mastery, enthusiasm and encouragement to those of us who are new, is such a boost. Ultimately, I ended the video feeling all pumped up to do more projects and believing I could. That in my opinion is the sign of a great teacher.

You mentioned tearing up your pinkie pulling the thread tight. Since I don't sew everyday, I haven't built up any calluses on my pinkies. I took a pair of tight fitting work gloves (the kind that are breathable synthetic with leather fingers) and cut short all the fingers except the ring finger and the pinkie. I wear these when I stitch and I don't get blisters. The other fingers are free to stay nimble for working the needles.

I recommend, as a starter project, sewing yourself a pair of leather fingerstalls, so you don't cut yourself with the thread 🙂 easy to make and a good practice piece.

Oh man, I needed this yesterday. Great video like always though. I will just keep improving. That tip about grooving one side... Yeah I learned that the hard way. It turned out alright in the end but it could have been better.
