Knowledge. Give me more material! Can you make videos on cutting weight and just general programming? I have read a few of your articles but I enjoy the videos. Also I just want to say how much I appreciate you writting the articles and sharing this information. It means a lot. Thank you, you are doing a great job and I really enjoy the content you release. Keep it up.
Literally the most interesting and unexpected reason for why you haven't used. Haha I'm continually impressed by the way in which you articulate yourself both in speech and in writing. Keep it up Greg. Maybe one day I can drive over from Greenville and get a lifting session in with you!
Thanks man! If you know of any gyms in greenville that may be interested in hosting a seminar, you could always put the owner in touch with me, ya know ;)
Nigga got a puppy calendar on the wall... My nigga got a professional black & white photo of his dog in the background. Nigga got the voice of a violin teacher... This man is NOT on gear
tfw you're hyped as shit because you're attempting a new squat PR tomorrow and then find out Greg did it at 15 untrained. Loved the Beer argument haha!
Same just finished SSLP novice progression and did my first meet and had a 380 kg total. And I missed like 15 kiloson squat bc I moved my feet after the down command by accident. And I misgroved my opener deadlift and my grip slipped for my 3rd so i only got my opener on 2nd attempt. Easily woulda had 400 + kgs if I hadnt messed up.
Good question. Haven't really put much thought into it. Since they're illegal, that basically makes my decision for me, and no point pursuing it further.
Given that you obviously love to lift, have you ever thought about how your decision might have been impacted if you weren't naturally gifted? Say the gains stopped after that second meet, for example, despite intelligent programming and commitment. I realize hypotheticals are always tough to answer, but this scenario did cross my mind.
+Marc Ritz I live in Asheville, NC. If you're ever passing through, or if you know anyone in the area, feel free to drop in unannounced. I have nothing to hide.
The red wine is an unfortunate side effect of cutting. The problem with a predilection toward 22oz quads and stouts is that one beer is ~700 calories, so merlot, scotch, and bourbon have to fill in.
Just curious Greg have you ever considered cutting down to a lighter weight class? You are still crazy strong for your current weight class but has the thought crossed your mind? Also how tall are you?
I don't really care about whether someone uses or not but I almost uniformly presume everyone does because mostly, they do... How many high level "innocent" athletes get busted before we realise, Yeh I'm not trusting any athlete. Btw not a bash on you fine sir, I honestly don't know if you are or aren't. Regardless you're a beast.
Judging from your handle (if you're an MMA fan) I can see why you'd think that. In powerlifting, that's not the case so much. There are a handful of people I'm skeptical about, but most of the people who say they're clean really are (this is coming from people I know and am friends with on a personal level, not just acquaintances). In PL, it's not like you can make a living off of it. There's really just not nearly as much incentive as there is in most other sports.
***** That makes a lot of sense actually and certainly a perspective I hadn't thought about before. I personally compete in Muay Thai and whilst there are some users, there isn't anywhere near the steroid use that's seen in MMA and like your point about PL, it is largely due to a lack of financial incentive. Most Thai boxers compete for the love of it not because they hope to make money. You're right though, my own belief comes from watching combat sports where my faith in athletes steroid claims is at an all time low. Thanks for your interesting response!
So 99% of the reason you're not taking steroids is that you don't want to end up in prison? Seriously? How many strength athletes went to prison for only using (and not dealing with) steroids??
Rare, very bad, more prone to happen given more volatility and more exposures (i.e. assuming you go on, you usually cycle for years and years)? Sounds like textbook Black Swan to me.
***** Well "rare" is not enough: Taleb: "First, it is an outlier, as it lies outside the realm of regular expectations, because nothing in the past can convincingly point to its possibility" Is that the case with (not) pursuing steroid users, that "nothing in the past can convincingly point to its possibility"? No, cause it's a simple law enforcement decision whether to do it.
ccax74 imo he oversells the "nothing in the past can convincingly point to its possibility" part of the definition, because all of the examples he uses (economic crises, businesses blowing up, medical interventions having unintended consequences, etc.) could be reasonably predicted in the general sense (since all of those things have happened before), just that they're considered highly unlikely in all discrete cases until it actually happens.
Out of curiosity: if steroids were legal, and did not harm your liver, would you then take them? I feel that there might be other factors involved. Sorry if this seems like a loaded question
Since I made this video, more data has been published showing that steroid usage is associated with decreased cortical gray matter thickness and decreased IQ. That's probably my #1 reason now. Not gonna do anything to risk brain function.
***** That's interesting to note, thanks for the response. I guess I was really wondering if you had any moral dilemma with it. I imagine that for a lot of people, it's an ego thing--the ability to say you're as strong as you are without the aid of steroids (possibly seen as cheating, to some). For me, it's a combination of this and the physical factors you mentioned.
Do I look like I even cut? jk. I'm actually ~14 pounds into a cut right now. Cutting article/video once I actually get down to at least a 4 pack just for visual proof that I know what I'm talking about.
***** well would you mind giving a list of some of the common things you eat then? Honestly I'm not interested in controlling my weight, I can already do that. Right now I'm more interested in the gut microbiome, and food combinations. For example it's apparently difficult for your body to get all the nutrients from a meal if you eat both high carbs and protein at the same time, because they use opposing digestive mechanisms ( www.drkaslow.com/html/food_combining.html ) You seem to have very good natural strength levels so it would be really interesting to know what kind of diet you grew up on. I think part of "good genetics" is having a good microbiome. Diets run in families, as well as DNA.
I'd say my diet was fairly normal or slightly on the low end of normal growing up. Lots of frozen stuff and food from a box. My parents did have us eat a decent amount of vegetables, though, and I always liked fresh fruit when we could afford it. I wouldn't say it was ridiculously healthy, but it certainly could have been a lot worse.
Would partially depend on the quality of bars and beer stores within driving distance. Another thing I didn't want to get into in the video - some familial hypercholesterolemia in play as well. Nothing too major, but significant enough that it wouldn't be worth it to me for my HDL numbers to take a hit. Men in my family die in their early 60s - ideally I'd like to avoid that.
Drug use is a "personal choice", a personal choice that throw the doubt on any person serious enough to be on the limit between a lazy drug user and an elite lifter...
Not good enough. Urine test. Right now. Live video. Any idea on what your total would be if you actually started using? Is that something that can be predicted?
I know Dan Green totalled 1763 before going on. But you can't really predict it - just like responsiveness to training is genetically determined to a degree, responsiveness to drugs is too.
someone that has gone from a 500lb total to a 1000lb total has doubled their strength. Greg has yet to do that. if you decided to use i guarantee that you'd reach a 2100 total, if not more
pretty much a 50/50 nature/nurture split (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/sms.12804/full). I picked the right parents, and did a fair amount of manual labor growing up. Hitting puberty really young helped too. haha
it's pretty rare that anyone uses steroids. if you don't total 1700 within 3 years you have shit genetics/diet/training. they don't give you more than maybe 50 lbs
my best regards v2 what are you guys talking about? it's just a fact that most elite lifters are natty and no one bothers to take PEDs because they do very little and are extremely dangerous. that's why the government made them illegal, morons. and spend 2 minutes searching on the internet you will see lots of people have hit those numbers i mentioned, all drug free. are you really this stupid?
That moment when you realize 15 year old Greg Nuckols was stronger than you are after training for 2 years... Do I even lift bro?
No. Unless you do. Then I’m sorry sir. Please forgive me.
I'm almost as strong as 15-year-old Greg. I'll take it.
All I heard was Greg uses speed!!! ;) lovely vid good sir. I feel ya on this topic and the potential frustration it leads to.
Is this THE Ben Rice himself?
***** a wild Ben Rice has appeared.
Silly Greg, of course it's me! I like you're talks and if I drank I would likely want to do it with you and Cody as y'all seem like good people ;)
Where do you live man? We're on the road a pretty decent amount. If I'm passing through I'll hit you up.
I'm in the middle of WA state but am about to be unofficially homeless for a few months so my mobility should increase as well haha
Take home message: Greg gets better gains from beer than most people get from steroids.
Bobby Eshleman roger that. Adding 6 beers to pre workout
that feel when greg totalled what I can, at 15, untrained. fuck me
+TheNietzschian I have been training properly for over a year and still im only at like a 950-1000 total
+TheNietzschian I have been training properly for over a year and still im only at like a 950-1000 total
+ElanTV Eat more.
indeed a calorie surplus will allow for greater recovery and hypertrophic adaptation.
+ElanTV 3 years of powerlifting and barely 1000 lbs total xd. I started with something like 400 so this is great progress 😁

Steroids are shitty anyway, like being on life support for your strength/gains. Unhealthy mentality.
So humble Greg. Keep up your great work.
Literally the most interesting and unexpected reason for why you haven't used. Haha I'm continually impressed by the way in which you articulate yourself both in speech and in writing. Keep it up Greg. Maybe one day I can drive over from Greenville and get a lifting session in with you!

tfw you're hyped as shit because you're attempting a new squat PR tomorrow and then find out Greg did it at 15 untrained. Loved the Beer argument haha!
Sorry couldn't focus on your words due to amazing calendar and beard both fighting for my attention.
I truly do not understand why deadlifts are not in the high school strength training curriculum!!
They aren't willing to teach it and to many kids have broke their backs over it. Im 16 and they arent teaching the form at all the squats are awful
One of the classiest personages in YT fitness
Greg for president.
How can you claim you're making gains when I watched this whole video (8 minutes) and didn't see a single gain the whole time.
Hey Greg, I like your Class.
1500 total on noob gains.
mfw im on my noob gains (a little over 3.5 months) and almost have an 800 total
Same just finished SSLP novice progression and did my first meet and had a 380 kg total. And I missed like 15 kiloson squat bc I moved my feet after the down command by accident. And I misgroved my opener deadlift and my grip slipped for my 3rd so i only got my opener on 2nd attempt. Easily woulda had 400 + kgs if I hadnt messed up.
Your lifts are natty. That beard is not.
Love you Greg/post more training videos xx
If 99% of your reason of not using is because its illegal, then the question must be asked, if it were legal then what?
Good question. Haven't really put much thought into it. Since they're illegal, that basically makes my decision for me, and no point pursuing it further.
so the answer is yes
Strengtheory you let the state decide things everything for you?
420... chuckle... munchies... gainzzzz
You are the Stephen Fry of lifters. That, my good sir, is a compliment :)
Are we also assuming in this scenario that I don't love beer?
***** Well now let's not get too ludicrous.
You went from 1070 to a little under 1500 in 8 months? How much bw did you gain in that time?
schenksta ~40lbs I think
Are people being purposefully sarcastic in the comment section or just that idiotic?
How popular is tren in powerlifting circles? Wouldn't it be great to get down to a more competitive division?
+Marc Ritz Not that popular in tested divisions
BLOOD OR URINE TESTS OR IT'S ALL JUST TALK.
+Marc Ritz I live in Asheville, NC. If you're ever passing through, or if you know anyone in the area, feel free to drop in unannounced. I have nothing to hide.
Gregs stack: about 500 ml of beer injected into his beard
30 min after training: 300 ml red wine with protons
The red wine is an unfortunate side effect of cutting. The problem with a predilection toward 22oz quads and stouts is that one beer is ~700 calories, so merlot, scotch, and bourbon have to fill in.

Ha ha ha ha superb.
Video suggestion ;You should make a video that explains DUP and how it works .
The Doc's alive, he is in 1885 but he is alive... all I could think.
Just curious Greg have you ever considered cutting down to a lighter weight class?
You are still crazy strong for your current weight class but has the thought crossed your mind?
Also how tall are you?
I'm 5'9.5."
In the midst of a cut now
*****
I'm 5'9.5" as well. Does that mean I can grow a sweet beard like you if I train hard enough?
That Dude Yes. Train hard and believe in yourself.

I'll guess the current cycle : creatine twice per day (3 grams each)
I don't care whether you have used seroids or not as long as you know what you're talking about
#BeardGang Keep doing your thing man.
So 99% of the reason you're not taking steroids is that you don't want to end up in prison? Seriously? How many strength athletes went to prison for only using (and not dealing with) steroids??

injectables don't do shit to the liver only orals and not even close to what alcohol does
Stronger By Science hi, very late to the party, could you link sources?
hey Greg what do you do for those mad beard gainz?
any cutting advice vids?
Do I look like I even cut?
jk. I'm actually ~14 pounds into a cut right now. Cutting article/video once I actually get down to at least a 4 pack just for visual proof that I know what I'm talking about.

Good luck. Cutting myself right now, and it's definitely way harder than the actual training.
really nice dog on ur wall
The moment you said „i like drinking beer“ i pressed like 😂👌👌
Hey Greg, can you do a video about your diet please? I'm guessing you weren't on the beer before 15, but who knows :D
Ali stair When I get as lean as I'd like to be, I will.

Greg! wtf you're from Asheville?!! I went to WCU, you must be the strongest person in NC
There are a few strongmen WAY stronger than me.
So Greg, basically I got from that: You don't juice cause beer. Amirite?
That's not ENTIRELY true.
But it's more true than it is untrue.
I can't believe your beard is not natty. I trusted you and you lied to me. How could you do this to me.
Do people really go to prison for using steroids alone? Isn't it more like a fee/fine type of thing?
Drug use is a "personal choice", a personal choice that throw the doubt on any person serious enough to be on the limit between a lazy drug user and an elite lifter...
you seem to use a lot of australian question intonation.
I just feel weird talking to a camera, I guess.
A stronger, slightly nerdier, more popular version of myself?
Pete Rubish you ain't, Babyface!
Now the real question: Is Oswald natty?
100% pup
Classic Forrest Gump closer.
Lies! You use hair extensions for the beard, you must.
Otherwise my beard will shrivel up in shame
...to make that natty claim legit, one should shave off that beard. I know many guys with steriodal chin grow a beard.

greg are you seriously trying to convince everyone that your beard is natty? lol fake natty!!!!!!!!!
