This game was way too ambitious for the hardware. Destructible environments, co-op bots, and a phenomenal soundtrack. It even has a leitmotif going through the whole thing.
The Airplane stage, still the most intense in NES, the music, slow frustrated Frame rates, grating camera moving left and right along with the plane, simply epic.
(at 5:03) "Well, it looks like we've solved this problem." "Where's that "Head Honcho" Fox was talking about?" "Oh no!! They're getting away by ship!" "Burns, I'm warning you! If you think your boss's life is so important, you better not leave! HA HA HA HA!!"
Rather than fighting aliens, this game had you fighting terrorists and criminals for once. I thought it was a rather welcome break from the rest of the series. Too bad the frame rate was just awful. Freakin' awesome soundtrack, though!
How could all the potential of this game be tainted by that frame rate? How was it possible for them to have that happen?! It's Konami!! Well, at leas the music doesn't slow down :D

Without the slowdowns, the game is really amazing. Tested on an emulator with CPU overclocking feature, and it's fuckin' awesome!
+Slick Vic Well, the game wasn't originally supposed to be a Contra game, it was called Arc Hood or something like that. But its release in Japan was cancelled and it became a NA exclusive as a Contra game.
Interestingly, though the game is usually swept under the carpet, when it comes to the Contra series, some game mechanics from it were reused in Contra Hard Corps. Both games have 4 characters with different weapon presets.
I Love this game and it's ending theme, it reminds me my childwood but back then i was playing a hack of ths game named super contra 6, anyway that was my childwood and i love it. Thank you for the upload!
Недавно у меня как раз эта игра и появилась вместе с самой консолью. Игру прошёл, а заодно и просветился (я не знал что раньше консоли работали на таких носителях, я думал что всегда на дисках все игры были).
CONTRA FORCE: A game you play for its music and not if you want to have fun. The frequent slowdown, frustrating game design combined with the absence of the Konami Code, and the result of the boneheaded localization of a game called Arc Hound in Japan. But that is some FAN-FUCKIN'-TASTIC music! The introduction, Player Select, Level 1, 2 & 3, this is absolute CLASSIC Konami NES music.
I use an emulator called NESsim for the game. It's a totally new experience with it. I found the game pretty good, but the slowdowns made it really annoying. NESsim has CPU overclocking and it makes the game speed way better! And in overall, the experience is much better. Actually, I played and died a lot. But I enjoyed it.
Ádám Pajor Aw man, Contra Force is so fun to speedrun, just for all its funny tricks, like when you jump, pause and resume, you can actually jump again. It makes the vertical climbing stages cake.
Just thought I'd add here that composer Tomoya Tomita just confirmed which tracks he wrote - the same guy who wrote the music to games like Wario Land Shake It and Yoshi's Woolly World. Here's the list: Prologue, Player Select, Command Select (Pause), Mission 1, Mission 2, Mission 3, Mission 4, Mission 5, Mission Clear, and Game Over. That leaves only 5 that are unaccounted for, handled by either Kenichi Matsubara or Yasuhiko Manno.
I don't understand why that theme on the building was called "Sheeshee Towers" in the OST but the name of the building itself in-game is the "Mati Building"
Slowdowns or not, i love this game. It was the first Contra game i played, so, imagine my reaction when this friend of mine show me...Contra 3...aliens? Robots? WHAT THE...
The only real problem I had with this game was the slowdown. Beyond that, I thought it was alright. I do give Konami credit for taking a game that wasn't a Contra game to begin with and at least TRYING to make it Contra-esque. If anything, I would say that a better title for this game should have been Casual Contra, because it doesn't have that balls-to-the-wall action the franchise is best known for. However, whether or not that's a bad thing is entirely up to the fans of the series. =)
this game isn't crappy to me .. its a great soundtrack. it may not had anything tot do the with the main Contra story but it's still Contra game nonetheless. Just wish this game was not so freakin high-priced and price gouched! great game ! :-P
+WiiGuy's 8BitStereo: You just reminded me why I hate trying to buy physical copies of 8-bit and 16-bit games of yesteryear. I'm fortunate that the sixth generation of consoles (the PlayStation 2, the X-Box, the Gamecube, and the Dreamcast) haven't gotten this bad...yet.
Awesome soundtrack, which you expect from an 8-bit Konami title. The game itself could use a heavy duty remaster to eliminate the constsant slowdown and lag, which greatly hurts it.
This game was destined to fail. It was branded Contra and was non-canonical, which people found off-putting. To make maters worse, It wasn't refined and had more than its fair share of bugs and glitches. However, the music is epic as heck and I still found so much enjoyment with the game. I always wished that they better utilized each character's strengths to interact with the environment more. If it was released as Arc Hound and was more refined, it most certainly become a classic.
the intro scares me plenty when i was 11 then it became so lit 🔥 only Konami could get me ptsd and plenty of likes back in the days. The only three nes tracks i hated include Castlevania 3 Cave Theme before you fight Alucard in Area 5, two maze games by Konami including a japanese exclusive (samurai with a blade slashing ghosts) and Goonies two also i notice your character design on the top right corner is way before Ring Fit Adventure. It surely looks like one
I had some Chinese knock off NES back then and the game had a lot of slowdowns especially when playing for long and the music sounds right to me at around 0.8-0.9 speed XD The weirdest thing was this console could play some of the SNES games too :|
If you could trigger Bullet Time in a Contra game I'd go nuts!

***** I just found an emulator called NESsim. Very simple, not so much features, but it has CPU overclocking! And it makes the game way more playable. It eliminates _most_ of the slowdown.
This game could be great. I still like it, but the constant slowdowns ruins it. That's the biggest flaw of this game in my opinion. I just put my emulator to 125% (75FPS) and it was far better to play. Unfortunate, everything else was faster (including music) but still it was fun.
Ádám Pajor Hát konzolon ez a max sebessége, mivel a játék amúgy is csak NTSC területeken jelent meg (hivatalsoan). Famiklónokon meg egy temetési járat! XD

Adyman I just tried this game out again. On another emulator called NESsim. It's very simple with a few options, but it has overclocking feature! While it can break some things, it makes this game a whole new experience. I just played like 5 minutes with it for testing, but it is way faster and much more enjoyable. The emulator can run on base CPU frequency, 2.68Mhz, and 5.36Mhz. At 2.68MHz, it already feels totally different (much smoother), but there are still minimal slowdowns and lag spikes.
This is maybe an unpopular opinion but Contra Force is my most favorite one of the series. For some reason the alien thingy didn't go well with my taste.
This game used to be about $40 on average, and was on my Amazon wishlist for a while, but because I'm mostly a "budget" retro gamer, I didn't pick it up for a long time.....then all of a sudden, virtually every copy of the game, on both Amazon and eBay, jumped up to $80 one day, like, virtually overnight..........why? Now I'm pissed. I mean, I know it's apparently a less common game, but still, it was only about $40....why the price increase? *sigh of frustration* Guess I'll have to PowerPak the rom... EDIT: Okay, cool; found a cart on eBay for a price I could afford, so...all's well.
It's crazy that some of the most epic and motivational music comes in the form of 8bits
I certainly think it's the best music ever created!
agreed
6 years later, NES OSTs are still so motivational
nearly every track is Double Dragon title theme lit! how awesome, even beats the great tmnt nes games and even later console games

The music of the first mission is something... one of the best soundtracks
@antooantoo4984 почитай комментарии, большинству нравится саундтрек первой миссий, хотя во второй миссий тоже классный.
Every tune in the game is adrenaline packed, and gets you going.
especially 7:41 Level 2. It fucking rocks
One of the most badass soundtracks to ever exist 🔥🔥🔥
This game's stage 1 track might be one of the gloriest made for Konami games!
***** I forgot, the stage 3 track might be even better!
Badass everytime for anyone who hears it that's for sure!
Крутезна гра, крутезна музика! Шкода, що Конамі не додала цю гру в збірку ігор Contra Anniversary Collection
This game was way too ambitious for the hardware. Destructible environments, co-op bots, and a phenomenal soundtrack. It even has a leitmotif going through the whole thing.
Most adrenaline packed you can get out of 8 bit.
prologue is was and will be stuck in my head forever
U.S.S. Unkmy battleship has to be my favorite from the game. One of my favorite soundtracks from the NES library for sure
The Airplane stage, still the most intense in NES, the music, slow frustrated Frame rates, grating camera moving left and right along with the plane, simply epic.
BURNS smith IRON and BEANS!! i played this game so much! it was weird at first but i fell in love.. the ost= classic
Geez, Level 2 Music! This is one of the best Konami Soundtrack on NES!
Mission 1: Dewerdrye Warehouse, Ending / Staff Roll - абсолютные шедевры.
This game's sound track is absolutely awesome. I bet they were mad as hell the game play was somewhat lackluster.
Funny that this game got this great of a soundtrack.
(at 5:03) "Well, it looks like we've solved this problem."
"Where's that "Head Honcho" Fox was talking about?"
"Oh no!! They're getting away by ship!"

wooahh, this sounds amazing
2:18 is the best of the rest of the soundtrack
Офигенный музон!
All speaking about mission 2 theme, for me the best is the mission 3 theme, it's so epic and motivational

***** Yeah well, you're the Wiiguy. I don't know a single game you don't like other than Destination Earthstar.
This game had some interesting things going for it though. You had AI partners and lots parts of the levels you could blow up.
I played this game like there was no tomorrow. Good times. Smh :-(

I'd like to hear a heavy metal rendition of it! It's probably supposed to sound that way.
The only real problem I had with this game was the slowdown. Beyond that, I thought it was alright. A couple of times, I played the game through just to get to listen to the ending music! Hah :D

Hell yeah, this game is still fun and good, just the slow down sucks. And yeah, damn you people that price gouge this, I'm lucky I got mine for free.
Hi Wiiguy! how have u been? if you don't mind me asking how did you get your copy of this for free? was it a gift?

contra force to me seemed like the beginnings of metal slug
I never knew of this game.
❤
The Contra game that wasn't really a Contra game, it still had good music though.

The last level tops all music on this contra
one of the games, I might even now make mod for one game LF2 Contra Force mod.
By any chance, could I use yours music?
yes you can
Stage 5 super music
Who's ready for WayFoward's next Contra game coming next year?
yeah,me too!

that mission 2 music...
how it can be achieved with all those limitation?
wtfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff? dint come out of my cave for many months cuz of this game :D I miss those days :(
How did you get this in stereo?

the cov' looks like a "CIA Pushers vs Junkies" kind of video game. To be played on mario shrooms =)
Hear the first soundtrack on 1.25x .
This is definetly a very Gameboy Konami sound. Castlevania Adventure or Nemesis etc.
final boss theme kind a reminds me of Starset - It has begun
I had some Chinese knock off NES back then and the game had a lot of slowdowns especially when playing for long and the music sounds right to me at around 0.8-0.9 speed XD The weirdest thing was this console could play some of the SNES games too :|
