- It's time for another "Railfan Review"! This installment will look at another HO Scale model, this time one of Bachmann's latest steam engines - the ALCO 2-6-0 "Mogul" with DCC and Sound.
Prototype History of the 2-6-0 "Mogul" locomotive will be covered, along with DCC Compatibility and Roadnames Offered.

Excellent review Christopher. I really enjoyed your video. I especially enjoyed the brief history of the locomotive and pictures of all the different liveries of railroads that Bachmann have released.
I have just ordered one of these in Pennsylvania Livery and cannot wait for it to arrive.

I just got the CN variant on today and I must say I'm impressed with Bachmann.
This is unbelievably small engine when put along side a USARA Pacific or Mikado locos and tiny in comparison to a 2-8-8-2. I bought this engine to represent the older side to my Class 2 freelance steam locomotive roster.
Small and full of character definitely worth picking up!
Truly amazing.
I recommend the Porter 0-6-0 Side Tank and Saddle Tank. Mostly the former. I recently purchased one and it is awesome!
6:02 in. I believe it, like most DCC locos is set at factory default #003, or might be 3 alone, but not 303 as you state.
I meant to say "Zero-Zero-Zero Three" as the title depicts, but I figured it was easier to say three zero three as there are three zeroes in the four digit address system.

I have 1 and it's one of my favorite engines.
I’m actually considering getting one of those engines and modifying it extensively and lettering it for my model railroad as their engine number 11. I will be modifying it with a larger headlamp from a Bachmann USRA 2-8-2 and a TCS WOWsound decoder.

Please consider reviewing the Pennsy Streamlined K4s by Bachmann, and the version offered by Broadway Limited Trains when it becomes available.
I habe two of these one is dc and one is Bachmann EZ app, They are very good moguls.
Addendum: The sound disappeared on my NYC mogul...Tried every DCC setting for, including of course 128..Nada.. Afraid if I send it to Bach, with their no longer repairing but replacing instead, I'll never get an NYC again, or even same wheel arrangement..I lost a 2-8-0 this way. And though I do like it alot, settled for a modern 4-4-0.They don't bench fix anything. They put them in a container and ship them all back to the factory as scrap...
If NYC is in the catalog, they'll have it in stock.
They have discontinued a lot of models over the last two years.
Very very belated thanks to all who've replied to my post...
Had one it was junk ,broken down the first day sent it back the replacement threw a side rod in 5 minutes of run time,sent it back and they replaced it with a Spectrum 4 4 0 modern since admittedly they did not check the second replacements .They just sent a new one that was not any good. Bachmann has some serious quality control with their new standard line locos with sound .They look good ,but cut too many corners of importance to make a improvement over their poor past poor quality junk.Spectrum is great.Recommend another brand if you just want a standard line loco at a good price. Bachmann's prices are good ,but not their quality and value in the long run.
I agree, the Spectrum line is a definite step-up from the standard range. However, the standard stuff Bachmann is putting out now is miles better than what they had two decades ago.
And with a steady supply of spare parts available through them, replacement parts for any of your engines could be easily acquired. I'm very sorry to hear about your engines' faults, though.
mine would derail constantly, did better in reverse, but much,,,,piss poor design, too light. gonna return it

I had gotten all of them through the railroad's gift shop. They're all exclusive products made by Athearn/Roundhouse for Strasburg.

You forgot that a version also comes in Green Bay and Western livery, which is what this variation of 2-6-0 is based off of.
+PereMarquette1223 That is true, but I'm basing this review on the engines that have DCC and Sound only. The GB&W engine is DCC Ready, so a decoder of any kind could be easily installed. Thanks for the note, though.
Ahh yes this is true. You should've also mentioned that this is the second run of these. There was a run earlier when they first came out where a few of the numbers are different. For example the Canadian National version had a four digit number where as now they did a renumbered version representing when the Canadian National renumbered a lot of their 2-6-0's.

Does it also work with DC power, in case you don't want to use DCC?
The layout in the video is straight DC power, so it is definitely able to run on DC. However, the whistle and bell will only sound when the engine is about to move in the direction you choose. The engine also has a higher starting voltage than most DC engines.
Now this locomotive has ez app capabilities
i might use my 2-6-0 on the Balanchine at the time i need more reefer cars like the 40 36 37

I think Strasberg 89 is was based of for ihc 2-6-0 moguls
I don't think #89 is the basis of the IHC Moguls. Though it is close, the IHC Moguls look to be based on Southern Pacific prototypes.

How do you unplug the tender or do you?
I just leave the connection between the engine and tender plugged in - but you can unplug it using some small pliers. Just be careful with the wires - any hard pulling can cause them to be pulled out of the plug, resulting in a loss of connectivity.

Does that loco also have a puffing smoke feature? In one of my catalogs, it says that it comes with a smoke feature, just wondering...
This model doesn't have puffing smoke, but the older 2-6-0 (made from the 2-6-2 "Prairie" model) does.

There should be an exploded parts diagram on Bachmann’s Parts & Supply website to show this. However, I’m certain it’s gear-driven.

One of the members of the Strasburg Model Railroad Club (which has built and displays an HO Scale Modular Layout of the railroad on special occasions) has kitbashed one of these into #89.

Hi Christhopher....I have a oroblem with my stean loco 2-6-0 (Buchmann) HO...It runs, but stop steam sound and buzzer. Do you know how to fix? Only the lights are ON and OFF.. Can you help me? I live in Brazil
Did your model come in a blue box (DCC Ready or DCC without sound) or a red box (DCC Sound Value)?
If there’s no sound coming from it, there might be a loose wire somewhere. But if you don’t want run through the trouble of fixing it on your own, simply fill out the warranty card that came with the model and ship it to Bachmann. They can fix it or replace it entirely.

Where did you get the strasburg passenger cars?
The coaches were bought directly from the railroad's gift shop. "Marian", "Gobbler's Knob", "Grasshopper Level" and "William McFarlan" were sold in 2007 as part of SRR's 175th Anniversary.
Today, there's only two coaches one can buy: "William M. Moedinger" and "Cherry Crest". They're available for $45 each.

if its DCC you should also review that .. bachmann DCC is junk alot of the settings are locked out
I had no trouble setting up the locomotive using the JMRI Loconet software.
JMRI wont change a setting if its not their to be changed though

Yes.
Do they have one with smoke?
The ALCO 2-6-0 does not come with smoke. The only engines that do smoke are the ones that are based on their 0-6-0 Switcher.
