I and my friend were there in ishikawa when the quake hits. But when the massive first quake hit were are still at shirakawago so it only felt like 5.5ish on the scale. We only realized about how bad it was when we heading to kanazawa station to get back home. The road are cracked, got uneven, small landslide here and there, and small building debris, but nothing fatal to the city itself. We are fortunate enough to manage to find emergency shelter, and bless those people who allow us to stay there and also to the people that took shelter there aswell for working together and looking for each other. At last me and my friends we manage to depart from kanazawa station using thunderbird express even tho it was packed to the brim that most of the passenger had to stand up for the entire journey to kyoto for about 3hours. It was one of kind experiences. Even when about to depart and late at the night also morning we still could felt quakes, noticeable but not too major.
We best wishes and prays to people of kanazawa and ishikawa, stay safe and thank you for taking care of us untill our departure 🙏

I just returned from an epic trip to Japan, where I made an overnight stop in Kanazawa just before Christmas, because I wanted to ride the Hokuriku Shinkansen. There was a guy who worked at Kanazawa station's Tourist Information Center, staying in the same hotel as me and we had a great chat about travelling around the area over a warm drink. It was snowing heavily, so he didn't want to go home, realise in the morning the trains wouldn't be running and not be able to come to work. In that sense, the quake touched me quite a bit, it's crazy to think that the region I visited, less than 2 weeks ago has now been heavily affected. I thought about people like that information centre guy and my thoughts are really with everyone else affected.

Live in the southern part of Ishikawa so missed the worst of the quakes. Used to teach up in Noto and have former students and friends up there who are safe, but going through a difficult time. Everyone in Ishikawa just wants to jump in our cars and go help, but it’s too soon, dangerous, and we will get in the way. A few local groups are coordinating with relief groups to gather donations and take them up there. The damage really begins in the towns bordering Kanazawa to the north, even a 15 minute car ride from Kanazawa station things get bad and just get worse the further up the coast you go.
Kanzawa’s center and tourist areas are fine and I am sure the local shops would appreciate the support if you are thinking about coming soon. There are aftershocks, they are mild or not noticeable in Kanazawa, but should be mindful.
I hope given time more people can come see there great culture and area of Noto ❤

Comment from Kanazawa. Earthquakes are still continuing, it occurred 4 times while watching this live-log; one was Shindo 3 (even the Japanese like me could be aware of), rests are Shindo 1 or 2 (almost as good as none for people raised in this always-vibrating island).
Most of attractions reopens and we're getting back our normal life (so I worked from 9 a.m. to 10p.m. as usual), however, distribution of some supplies like milk and eggs has been slow yet. If you always have to drink milk or will go crazy, sightseeing after a few more weeks could be an option. At least am about to go crazy because of my lovin' cheap but delicious sandwich weren't lined up at the store.

22:01 … Man that sent me back. I do remember the Northridge quake in SoCal. I was a young kid… it was 1994…?
My family & I were sleeping when it hit about 3 or 4am that early morning. It was the biggest quake most of us had felt, mom was unnerved by it too. So my siblings & I ended up sleeping in my parents’ giant bed with my parents the rest of the night as that was the part of the house with the least roof structure/weight. And yes, we kids were scared, yet somehow slept despite thanks to spending the rest of the night next to our parents.
There were many homes at the epicenter in Northridge that weren’t equipped to handle the intensity, so there was quite a bit of damage there & surrounding areas.
It’s the reason why steel reinforced structures became part of common construction projects including residential homes thereafter in California.
Admittedly, that was only a 3 or 4+ on the Richter Scale, so the devastation is no where near as bad as it is in the Noto region currently as it was 7.6… I’m unsure how comparable the Richter is for Japan, but basic math: 7 > 4…

Updates: Kenrokuen has reopened, but Kanazawa Castle is still closed as of today 1/5. Omicho and Higahsichaya are fine! 21st century museum is closed until 1/8 last I heard. I was at the station today and all the malls and most of the restaurants there are open again. (The station Starbucks is closed!)
I agree with your advice about contacting hotels to check on their status. I’d also recommend calling restaurants or specialty shops in advance to make sure they’re open!
The aftershocks are still happening in Kanazawa city, but most are not noticeable unless you’re sitting somewhere very still. Japan may be used to earthquakes, but that doesn't make situations like this any less heartbreaking, right? 🥺I'm going to Japan for 3 months and the region I've been most excited to visit is the Kanazawa, Toyama and the alps. However, I am feeling anxious about keeping that part of the plan, to be very honest. As you said, it's not possible to predict an earthquake and it's intensity. I've been reading about them and it seems that Ishikawa has been having increased seismic activity (foreshocks) for quite a while now (3 to 4 years), with a quake of the order of 6-something last May, after which it was considered "back to normal" again. What I'm trying to say is: this could have been the big one and now there will be only aftershocks or it could have been "just" a *bigger* foreshock still - there's no way to know for sure, right?
All of this to give context for my question: what would you (so kindly) recommend as an alternative to Kanazawa, Toyama and even the alps for now (for about 1 week, from Tokyo)?
The combination of history, culture, nature and unique scenic views (minus the crowds) is what got my heart pumping and I am hoping to find this atmosphere somewhere else, if I can't shake the worries away. All the suggestions are more than welcomed and appreciated.
Great work, great videos, refreshing perspective! Thank you for what you do ♥

When i was there a few weeks ago, i was concerned of an earthquake eventually happening because of earthquakes in the Philippines that happened recently. It appears that the Philippines quakes slowly creeped up north headed to Japan(This was monitored for days in the Philippines) Guess my fear was realized.

Well, since the Phillippines are a geografical part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and if larger plates move, several earthquakes might be related to each other, but not necessarily.

Hello, we plan to go to Shirakawago by bus next week, is the location opened and how about the bus transport, does it run normally? After that, we will go directly to Kyoto using JR Thunderbird, is the train running normal? If anyone have this information, please comment, I would really appreciate it. Thank you

I’ve been told that transport from Kanazawa is running normally EXCEPT to Noto Peninsula. The JR trains to-from Tokyo and Kyoto are running.

I plan to go to Kanazawa in 15 days and I am worried that it will not be a good time for my own leisure while they are worried about what happened in the region. Anyway, I would like to know if the places that are visited by tourists in Kanazawa will be open or if I will have other alternatives...

Just keep checking the official websites of the places you want to go. For example, Kenrokuen updated their site with a notice that the garden as a whole will open as normal from January 5 but certain areas will be closed off. Also know the risk that trains can be delayed/stopped due to aftershocks, and in some cases you may be stuck at a station or on board a train while safety is confirmed.

I believe the attractions will be open again and after shocks will simmer. As said before, keep checking the tourism site and / or give them a call. They speak English. Number is on Google maps.

I was also disappointed by many western media and their coverage about that quake.
You can easily get the false impression that the whole of Japan was affected 😂
Especially the German DW was pretty exaggerating!
Fortunately, the domestic news about that earthquake are totally different and very precise in Germany.

Firstly much sympathy for everyone impacted by the recent events. Japan is in a region of geological land masses creating earthquakes. With that in mind Japanese construction prevents major damages and is truly lifesaving. The question of the media’s misinformation is basically attention grabbing headlines to obtain readership. This profit driven motive always creates unforeseen consequences and the media’s viewers and readers should ALWAYS take sensational news headlines skeptically. Always consider the source but corroborate with valid experts before one makes an opinion.
I live in San Francisco and I’m always amazed at media’s erroneous interpretation of how “damaged” San Francisco is.
Tragic yes but not to the extent of what the media has done.
    Sad isn’t it?

It is the best time to visit a volcanically active region is just after a major earthquake has happened but you need to wait for everything infrastructure wise to be rebuilt and for things to return to normal but you will be at the lowest chance of experiencing and being effected by an earthquake if you visit right after a big one has happened.

I understand what you mean about fear mongering, the sad thing is that people believe it. I’m still travelling & had I been travelling to Japan I’d still go. I’ve learnt heaps & feel it is safe for me to go. Best of luck to you all 😊❤🇦🇺

They don’t understand how long California is either. Quakes in SoCal often matter not to residents of NorCal and vice versa. I worry about the other small towns, Noto etc and whether there is adequate food and supplies remaining in the conbini and other stores to last until the roads can be made passable. I’m sure Wajima lost many supplies in the fire. I have family in Fukui-shi and was planning a visit this spring, hoping to be able to bring my tourist dollar to ishikawa prefecture as well.

When the sounds in my head stop, when it gets quiet, I know within a day or two there is going to be an earthquake. The island of Japan is sitting on more of a fault line than California so there are going to be more earthquakes. I saw years ago where all new buildings sit on a Teflon plate so they can move without collapsing. The older homes won't survive because they aren't on the plates. The deeper the quake the more severe the quake and tsunami the more damage. The more shallow the quake the less damage, but will still be a lot of damage with older homes.
