The real challenge for me, and I think most people, is branding yourself. As a designer I can brand other people no problem, but as soon as it’s for me.... I just hit a wall. Every time. This was basically a 12 minute squarespace pitch and I watched it till the end 🤣 nice work Peter they are lucky to have you! Now what template should I choose...
Such an honest video Pete! Most Creator/Photographer, are suffering from this stereo type. The fact is, you don't have to post all of your work on social media. 💪🙏
Having your own website, is like having your own show-room, you decide what goes where, what the client sees first, what he sees second, what he doesn't see at all, how and when he can get in touch, you are in control so you can show your best the way you know best!
The challenge that I have at the moment is getting people to notice my work. As I have all these things set up, just getting the right people to see my work and keeping up with all updating everyone and getting clients feels like a full time in itself and it’s tough.
Same here. It’s like people don’t want to spend the money for pictures. I always get into discussions with people about doing it but once it comes to money they don’t want to really do it. But those few instances is all the encounters I have had. It’s hard to find people and in constantly trying to reach out to people to get paid gigs.
You got me super excited to work on my reel! I’ve been doing jobs here and there non stop. Everything started watching you and your tutorials 3 - 4 years ago. So thank you !! So stoked to watch your reel
Social Media is a ‘window’ into the room where your portfolio lives, you can look through the window or you can enter through the door (link to website)…excited to see your new site! 😎👍🏻

I have been teaching my students this concept for nearly 15 years. Lol Glad to see you finally see the light. Social media is good, but it should always point viewers to the "Real" portfolio.
What’s really crazy is that I literally thought about shutting my social media today for a while and concentrating on a website, then bring my social media back as a way of solely advertising the website as my main outlet for blogging, writing, and photos etc
I remember you talking about Instagram being "the new portfolio" like 3-4 years ago in a video, and ever since then I started upping my game there. But I started realising otherwise like a year ago - more clients want a website where they can choose what category of work they want to see. It's overall more professional... and the quality doesn't get compressed. But your tip overall helped me be more picky with what I post on instagram, witch I also think is important!
Excellent video and so true. As pro sports photog for over 10 years running, with 100+ teams I’ve never set up a website to showcase a portfolio or video work I’ve completed.. since starting a YT channel, this is SOOOO TRUE because a possible client may seek out our channel, and that would not entirely reflect the capacity of work that we can execute.
great video Peter! I was thinking about this recently...and also have been pushing my reel for too long. Thaaat's why I am so ready for this REEL competition!!! Let's go! Where do we post/send them??
Coming back to this. I just got my dream job, and the reason why is because they saw my insta feed and loved it. In this sense, my feed was my portfolio. Now, I had a website to supplement it (or the other way around), but it was extremely crucial for it to be polished. Dont neglect the feed! Could be huge. (Full time gig, not a freelance gig)
I totally agree. My wife is a cake Baker and gets 85% of business through FB and Insta but having her website sets her apart from other local bakers. She can direct everyone through the website and it gives them everything they need to know without having to send 30000 dm's to the clients. Another great Video Pete, thanks 😊
100% agree Pete. Especially with the frequency of social media accounts being hacked or even simply because your work is being controlled by another company. My wife had a lot of her work on her facebook and it was recently hacked, so lesson definitely learned the hard way.
Like is frustrating when you make a good photo or an Instagram reels that has been beautifully made and you get only 100 views. The work that is behind is not reflected.
totally agree, social media now just shuffles everything around for their own benefit - creators should curate their contents themselves. Good call Pete.
I am a 100% believer in the points you make here. When I ask a restaurant if I can find their menu online, and they say, "We're on FaceBook," they lose me as a customer. I don't use FaceBook. Or any social media. "Why are you making this more painful for me?"
