Join us, Daphne and Ian, as we embark on our new chateau renovation projects! This week, Ian walks down the moat walls to start the long process of cleaning the 500-year-old castle moat! Our new wet saw has arrived and we put it to the test. Benoit returns for the first time since his accident and we are happy to see his smile and get some advice for our renovation project.
Our "beau chateau" (The 500-year-old, Chateau De Lesigny), is located near Paris, France. Most of the structures around the chateau domain need a full restoration, so we are investing everything we have into making the property thrive! We are learning more about french culture and developing new skills along the way!
As a French/American UC Berkeley graduate in Agriculture (Daphne), and a U.S. Air Force Tactical Response Force Veteran/ Kinesiologist (Ian), we share a love for challenges and adventure. We have a long road ahead of us and we are excited to share the experience with you!

The quip about the safety harness made me laugh out loud! The duct tape has been a handy addition. Cool that you've found a great way to make the tiles waterproof. The kitty on the shutter made me smile. Wonderful bird rescue. Seeing Benoit joking and helping you on the bathroom was awesome! Happy people came together in such a generous way for him!

Cleaning the moat sounds like quite a job. I watch Stephanie who has the de Lalande ... Chateau Dairies channel... and their gardner Dan at the time put a row boat in the moat and used a flame thrower to burn the growth off the walls of the moat. It looked a lot easier then climbing down the wall. I tried to find the YT video but was unable to locate it. I love your chateau & channel. sending the best!! ps Anna & Phillip are friends with Stephanie .... maybe there is a way you talk with Stephanie.

For the moat, it might be easier to clear what's near the rim by hand without the harness. Then you could clear everything below that with a small boat or paddle-board.
Probably easier with two people, one person can hang a pole net over the rim to pull up debris and save you the climbing.
An 8 foot Jon boat would probably be a good investment. A long pressure washer hose too so you can leave the washer unit on the rim and hang the nozzle/hose down the side.

So happy to see Benoit back and doing better. A thought about the moat walls -- I thought you had a boat for the moat - could you tie it off below you and toss the debris into it (I would fit it with a tarp with grommets that are threaded with a rope so you can just pull it up when full rather than pulling the boat out). Such a lovely chateau to watch coming back to life under your care.

I agree that removing the Ivy from the stone moat wall looked very uncomfortable while using the harness. 😢//
Nice tile cutter machine! 👌// Neat idea to save the tiny birdies in the old Chateau cage! 🐦🐦🐦
The new paint color for the shutters looks great! It will be somewhat messy to remove the old paint with paint remover, 😝 but a tarp goes a long way in protecting the grass or floor area where you're working. Can't wait to see the finished shutters!😄💜👍

That moat wall, though. Big job. I'm impressed with the progress you made. Definitely would go faster with a second person there so you don't have to keep coming up and getting back out and then going back down. The second person could take the vines and empty the bag for you, leaving you free to just remove them. Easy for me to say, right? Haha.

You will find a hoist that gets you away from the wall will help you in your struggle to clean the moat walls. The best tool you could rent would be one of the articulated scaffolds used for bridge maintenance. One of the Aerial lifts that is articulated to allow you to get below the wall, clean a large area at once & move along in comfort.
    Work look's great!

You are SO innovative! First cleaning the moat. You only need a "panga". We use it in Africa to clear the woods to walk through it. The panga works so fast, your harnas will not even be an issue. You should have filled the tiles with "epoxy" ? Oh they are gorgeous! They look great though. Glad to see Benoit and thank you to all the rich people who helped him to purchase the right tools. What a great tile cutter enjoy!! The birds made my day!! I've never seen such a hotel bird nest and that at a chateau! What a clever mother to except your kindness. The umbrella - wow, I couldn't help laughing. You should consider an animal rescue at the chateau. You are gifted. Best wishes on all your projects.

Yep, Bosun Chairs hella a lot more comfortable than a swiss seat. In regard to taping the back of the tile, spraying or painting a clear coat would seal it fast and efficiently so nothing would seep out when you flip them. I would say a good belt sander would do the trick formthe doors and shutters and be good for future projects.

Next time you need to clean the moat walls launch a small boat or floating deck to drop the branches, vines and debris on to. I’m pretty sure I saw a boat ramp in an earlier vid which might make it easier for the lower brush and then pull the top vines over the wall from the top.

Benoit is so sweet, really reminds me of my father in law who has always been so kind in helping us with renovations, hopefully one day he will be helping us with out very own chateau/castle. Many blessings on all of you and your beautiful Beau Chateau!

So good to see Benoit. I think you need his son, Nathan to give Ian French lessons. ❤
