Regardless of our Actual Weather, Alex you always, and Honor, bring such energy to your work with detailed information that's easy to understand too. Thanks also to all the 2024 Met Office team, Presenters and behind the scene specialists. Alex D ~ what You Aiden, Claire and Annie started continues to grow, becoming even more important here on UA-cam ..🎉
I suspect the reason 2024 doesn’t seem like a warm year for many is that overnight temperatures were probably higher, maybe few if any cold winter nights, rather than warmer daytime temperatures. I doubt many experience the temperature based on overnight figures. Happy New Year to everyone at the met office 😊
Very many thanks indeed for an excellent Deep Dive Alex! I thoroughly enjoyed it all, very informative and definitely interesting. Great to hear about all the wind sheer amidst the rain tomorrow! A very SAFE, HEALTHY and HAPPY, NEW YEAR for 2025!! Thanks again, to the Met Office too. Take very great care everyone please, there’s going to be a LOT of rain, possibly freezing fog too!
Thank you, met office, for 2024's deep dives. They have become one of my favourite things every Tuesday. There is such a lot to learn about climate and weather, but I feel marginally less ignorant than I used to be. Happy New Year to everyone, and I hope to be here for all the 2025 podcasts.
My annual summary is consistent with yours; daily average temperatures +0.3C above my 2009-24 average (with average maxima bang on my 09-24 avg but with minima 0.5C above), rainfall was 144% of average (by some margin the wettest year in my 17 years of data), wind around 10% below average, pressure -1.2mB below average and solar energy was the worst in 11 years and around 7% below average. I am based in Hollywood, Worcestershire just south of Birmingham. Happy New Year to everyone at the Met Office and thanks for all you've done in 2024!
I found the explanation of percentages for chance of wintry weather over uk very interesting and i learned a lot. Thanks for a great deep dive.happy new year to all the met office team your work is appreciated.
We used to learn all this stuff at School back in the 80's. I can remember doing meteorological studies as part of my Olevel and A level Geography studies. I really enjoyed it and it's all stayed with me
Thank you for this weekly weather forecast, interesting stuff and expertly (apart from battling with the technology) presented. The fascinating thing to note was that here in south-east Kent the arrival of the wind shear brought with it an great improvement in VHF/UHF radio propagation to the north-west for about 6-8 hours. All the best to everyone here and there for 2025.
Wow Alex that was amazingly interesting! Everday’s a school day for this methead ! Thanks for explaining line convection, wind shear and NAO. Happy New Year to all of the team.
Happy New Year Alex. Thanks for the detailed information would love a little bit of snow of Warwickshire but it usually doesn’t normally come much up my way.
Happy New Year. We have had strong winds and heavy snow in Shetland today... .Thanks for another great Deep Dive. Is the plant to the right of the screen alive...it has been looking poorly over the last few Deep Dives. Thanks again to all the Met Office team for all the Deep Dives.❤ 18:28
Excellent presentation! Thank you to you all for all your great work in 2024 and, of course, Happy New Year 2025! It's wonderful to get the weather presented by real enthusiasts. Perfect for me, living on a boat on our inland waterways and really 'feeling' the effects - currently being buffeted by 40-knot gusts! Thank you for all you do.
It's a real shame the decision for Edinburgh - more or less the same weather as where I am in the Cotswolds. Totally possible to hold a big event, wind gusts are under 50mph - it's just a little bit blustery - very little danger of anything bigger than a cardboard box flying about. I get it - there was uncertainty as to the intensity of winds in the region and apparently it was hard to forecast with enough confidence up to the start of the work of setting up the event. That's the big take home - not so much the event itself in terms of weather, but actually setting it all up. The right decision was made even if it hurts so much - but damned if you do, damned if you don't is the ultimate headline.
Absolutely agree. They made a premature decision to cancel. Were likely pressured by "Health and Safety." Not even a yellow warning out for 00:00 on the 31st for Edinburgh. Wind gusts in the city more like 30-35 mph Not 5p+
Thanks for all you do on these Deep Dives, so interesting. When you show the final stats for 2024, can you show us how the average wind speeds varied aross the country? It seems to have beena very windy year for paragliding in the north of England, while the south seemed to get all the big days. Thanks
Lots of weather happening on the turn of the year makes a change to have some cold weather even for cornwall, cold next year, very soggy this year, then glorious tshirt westher the previous year, looking forward to more met office you tube productions next year
Some brief tornadic probabilities from that rearward sloping front and squalls as it heads south, I imagine. Watch this space! Happy New Year everyone, Tony.
@@luke50191 I have to ride to and from work, but fair enough im not outside all day.😁 A man once said "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing"
What a pity about the weather. Restriction on the opportunity of celebrating the New Year in the spirit of unity, love, and optimism, which is sadly diminishing in the world as time goes on.
Could the big screen be controlled from the laptop, so that the presenter doesn't have to stand in front of it and block the view when moving the slider? That way he would also be facing the audience rather than having to be a contortionist to do so. Otherwise an excellent presentation, as always.
Nice presentation for the New Year, but for me you would be better to have your menu touch screen on the left so you wouldn't be blocking the picture so much, maybe having to use your left hand more
Thank you. Fascinating as ever for a weather nerd like me. Happy New Year to all at the Met Office. PS Has that beautiful blonde meteorologist had her baby?
never known new year's eve firework displays cancelled in my life time.i could move south but prices of housing is so high so no mobility we were supposed to have and HS2 cancelled giving us in north the ability to work down south and live in the north.

Correct. A mild autumn & winter.
Probably due to the fact that world climate change has nothing to do with UK weather conditions
Thank you Alex helps me on my travels to work and keeps me safe 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊
Happy New Year Met Office!
Brilliant. go Get that cup of coffee and a well-deserved break! Happy New Year!

As a guy who understerands the weather, this is a bloody britlliant forecast! Bloody well played.
Why - at 5:20 or so - do the winds on the occlusion do a 120-degree left turn, out of interest?
Bloody hell!

I really enjoy the Deep Dives. Thank you
ALL THE BEST. 👍
Thank you, and the whole weather team. You substantially enhanced my understanding of our weather throughout 2024. All the best for 2025 🎉
Thank you members of the team. I am very interested in the Weather and your presentation is always look forward to. Happy New Year.

I recorded a gust of 55.7 mph up at Burton Dassett today, it is pretty windy
❤❤ met office deep dives as it helps save lives by persuading folk to take precautions
Great stuff! You have taken over the old radio Sea Area Forcast for me. Relaxing to listen to. Cheers!
❤ thank you 🎉
Haha, that's the first time my other half has suddenly taken an interest in what I was watching (Arsenal fan). Happy New Year to all. 🎆✨

First time I’ve ever had the weather explained and I’ve kind of understood it
Thanks Met Office - really enjoyed seeing the wider picture and hearing the explanations. Happy New Year to you. 😂
Best weather forecast. Happy new year 2025
Lol 8:00 that red area sitting right over me in Leeds 😂
This is going to be the end of this year and the new year has begun and leap year has been completed
One of them will eventually get use to

Thankyou,Happy New Year😀
December was yet again remarkably mild. A change would be nice.
Very interesting weather at the moment!

Any explanation on what might be causing the consistent cloud covering?
My question too. I thought he’d said early that he’d explain that 🤔
Bring the snow!!
Please don’t wish for snow. It’s dangerous and disruptive
And so is life
@@racheljones8682 so why wish for something that makes it worse
It doesn't... I love the snow ❄️ bring it on... snow isn't just dangerous.. its fun too... you just got to make sure your extra careful in it
Snow snow snow, fantastic
Please don’t wish for snow. Dangerous and disruptive
Thank you all. A very Happy New Year to all the team. 🎉
"A lot of weather going on". 💯 weather!
What a brilliant report thank you

Great stuff.
Some of the other forecasters I like are Carol Kirkwood, Laura Tobin, Amanda Houston, and Lucy Veraswamy
Very informative. And happy New Year when it comes.
Let’s all pray that the low is high and pushes that horrible cold air away
Let's not. You can save the mild weather till the summer. Winters should be cold.
@ when you work outside like me, a cold winter is definitely not welcome 😂

Thank You Alex B
A great deep dive Alex, one of many in 2024. Best wishes for 2025
I got excited about a clear night on Thursday to get the telescope back out after months of grey nights... I can wait another week.
Thanks Alex nice forecast🌨🌈☂❄⛄
Cold weather please, i hate this awful mild winters
Have You ever considered those pensioners that have had their winter fuel payments withdrawn?
Just a thought...
We love cold weather as well...we bought our oldie neighbour..electric throw blanket..brilliant...kind to make the point 💙uk
Cheaper heating bills for milder weather. And better driving conditions.
Please don’t wish for snow. As a gritter driver I see the dangerous and disruptive elements

Happy and blessed New Year !
Great forecast for Quadrantid meteor shower on Friday night..😁😁
Could the big screen be controlled from the laptop, so that the presenter doesn't have to stand in front of it and block the view when moving the slider? That way he would also be facing the audience rather than having to be a contortionist to do so. Otherwise an excellent presentation, as always.
I believe the above average annual temperature is mainly down to a lack of cold days rather than an abundance of warm days.
Great stuff...so I'm going to get drenched tonight. Thanks
Hi guys. Question for the live stream on Friday. How can the weather system change so much over 24hrs. As northern Ireland was surpose to get snow.
Nice presentation for the New Year, but for me you would be better to have your menu touch screen on the left so you wouldn't be blocking the picture so much, maybe having to use your left hand more
May the yuletide log slip from your fire and burn MET offices down!! "I WAS PROMISED A SNOWMAN"
Obviously satire!
Is it Bank Holiday 🤔
Yup

Thanks to everyone in the comments, just leaving nice replies. Mean comments are so old now.
There’s going to be snow and rain? Outrageous! Who could have foreseen this??
