    As soon as the chief forecaster gave his seasonal (winter) forecast about a month ago in which he said high pressure influence much less likely to predominate that's just about the main weather pattern we've had!

      It has been said a neutral to tending La Nina tends to favour a dry start to winter and more changeable conclusion and yes there is plenty of time for a stormy period between now and Easter but we have had rather extended periods of anti-cyclonic gloom since the beginning of November.?

      If you look on the royal metrology society you tub you will see a trend. My understanding is the trend is slightly warmer and wetter than normal. Not as bad as last year generally.

    We are long overdue a proper easterly.

      I don't know about that but weather patterns 10 and 17 are both long-term cyclical in terms of frequency. See last week's Deep Dive.

      Speak for yourself. No one wants it to be freezing and snowing, especially when people like me have to work outside amongst it. No thanks

    Many thanks Alex, I can quite understand when in January, we get the very misty or foggy days, to be honest I quite like it as it’s atmospheric. Then it’s a bit milder, though I’m not so much looking forward to the easterly or south easterly possibly coming along towards the end of next week, but at least the last couple of weeks gave us a taste of what winter 🥶 still holds for us, so not too much of a shock. I just hope the pensioners whose winter fuel allowance was robbed from them manage to keep as warm as is possible. I hope some are able to move around as much as possible to help.
    Thanks again Alex, to the Met Office too.
    Take care everyone, especially on roads in the fog

      She won’t rue the day at all. Current pensioners are “boomers” and so you are part of statistically the wealthiest generation that Britain has ever seen. Most boomer pensioners that are complaining about their £200 loss will get a whopping 4.1% increase in the state pension in April and most of you didn’t vote Labour anyway so why would she be worried about losing your vote? You probably wouldn’t vote Labour anyway. People who would never vote for a party shouting “I will never vote Labour” is absolutely pointless.

      @ I know for a fact that not all are rich. I have worked in community care for over 10 years. I have cared for many elderly people and they are poor. I lady I called on once slept with coats on her bed to keep her warm.

    Can you introduce some statistics like coldest 16th January ever or average temperature for North West England v South West England or sunniest January day etc.

  • @wdd910
    @wdd910 15 днів тому

    if whole of jan stays cold, the way I understand it there's always the hope of snow later on ( here in SE) for the rest of winter...because there's build-up being stored in the system with the ground remaining cold (musnt abate for too long tho and moscow needs to deep-freeze too!)

    Hi Alex, the surface pressure charts appear to be 2-dimensional (north/south & east/west) but having low and high pressure areas suggests there is another vertical component to the weather. Is this what causes the high & low pressure areas? Any chance of an explanation???? Thanks in advance......

    • @paradisehub9382
      @paradisehub9382 15 днів тому +2

      Yes, the air above the surface is acted on by gravity which tries to pull it down. This is experienced as atmospheric pressure. In areas of high pressure, the air above the surface is more dense, leading to greater downward forces and higher surface pressure. Air compresses and warms up as it sinks, this leads to more evaporation meaning clouds are very unlikely to form. In low pressure, the air above the surface is less dense, leading to a kind of vacuum effect where the denser air at the surface wants to rise. When air rises, it cools, condenses and forms clouds and precipitation.
      Synoptic pressure charts are expressed in terms of bidimensional maps for no reason other than simplicity of interpretation, plus it acts as an abstraction for a broader trend of higher and lower pressure as of course there can be very local differences in air pressure that would be impossible to accurately express in three dimensions.

      @@paradisehub9382 Ta v much for the explanation, never really thought that gravity acts on air in our in our atmosphere, I guess it's obvious as otherwise we would lose it!!

    Still i seem to think after watching all the deep dives and ten day trends , it gets a little boring, i know it’s not the forecasters fault, but after a while the producers seem to want to deviate, from weather forecasting to other things to fill in the time, at first the weather program was interesting when it was just about the long range forecasting, so please could the producers stop deviations please yours sincerely Mr J.D.Harris
