Shows how smart Doubledealer is. He didn’t even consider the fact the Autobot he was trying to kill held a device that could answer ANY question! What did he think was going to happen?
I love how some of these names (Doubledealer, Swindle, Flip Sides) are obvious illusions to negative aspects of their character, but everyone remains oblivious to that fact until it's too late.
Doubledealer was always one of the more interesting characters to come out of G1 related media. There aren't a lot of bounty-hunter-esque characters in transformers, so learning about one is always fascinating.
Honestly, I think the Powermasters were probably the last real high point of Western G1. Big, cool toys with interesting transformations, fun altmodes, and a gimmick that works well. You really have to wonder which Hasbro executive looked between Submarauder and Dreadwind and picked the former as the model for all the larger toys of the line's next year. And Doubledealer was easily one of the best Powermasters.

I’d never even heard of Double Dealer until I saw him in IDW comics. And I had no idea he was supposed to be a triple-changer. So thank you for filling us in on his backstory!

@@Angel_Love6680 technically Counterpunch is an Autobot disguised as a Decepticon (or in some cases just a Decepticon personality) but either way he is definitely loyal to one of the factions.
That IDW spotlight, found in a public library, was my first introduction to IDW comics, and indeed my first exposure to any transformer comics after the fall of Dreamwave, the comics I'd read as a kid. I enjoyed it very much, but it wasn't until a few years after that I realized it was part of an ongoing comic universe. I was so glad to have ongoing transformers comics after that :>
It helped that most stories were written/drawn by fans turned professionals (even Simon Furman was involved with the comics). Some of them even got started in Dreamwave.
I kinda like the idea of two people sharing the same transtector. The idea makes me think of either a brother and sister or maybe even a husband and wife not knowing the other has the bot. The girl wanting to rebel and act out and the boy being kind strait laced and goodie goodie. Really works as the bird is the "evil" one being able to fly freely and the bot being well as your said a Super Robot fighting for justice.
Not quite the same but in Super-God Masterforce, Overlord was the combination of the Godmaster husband and wife Giga and Mega. Giga was the tank and Mega was the jet. Still, your idea is different and interesting in its own right!
I think I remember having a bootleg toy of this when I was a kid. IT was broken and couldn't transform anymore but I brought it with me everywhere anyway, man never thought I'd get nostalgic over an obscure character

It's good that a character like DoubleDealer has had some involvement here and there in the franchise albeit very brief because this character has a lot of potential for future stories in western media, however Netflix did a solid by giving him a role in the recent show because it could lead to more involvement down the line. I'm not massively into DoubleClouder but the idea used for Masterforce was interesting to see develop.

I always loved the concept of an Autobot mode and a Decepticon mode. I wouldn't mind owning a Doubledealer, Punch/Counterpunch, or an Animated Shockwave one day!
Since they've introduced the mercenary affiliation in the Transformers Earthrise Netflix series I wonder if this will mean that Lockdown will appear in a future episode of that show as one of the many Bounty Hunters on the mercenary faction
Still feel there's a great story to be done for this guy that properly uses his dual allegiance better ala what's been done with counter punch. Very underutilised.
@@chadderbug7587 I mean, there’s a lot of stuff to do on him. We got a new figure on him in the SS line, there were 2 different versions of him, and it’s only self explanatory for him to get a basics on him since he already did one on Galvatron and Cyclonus.
What an intriguing concept for a "Transformer spy" & toy. I would've really liked to have seen him re-imagined in the Beast Wars show (hopefully w/ a double-barrel blaster). I think his "treachery" would've put schemers like Tarantulas to shame. And unlike Tarantulas, he'd actually have 2 loyal partners to work with.
Are we almost close to finally having The Transformers Basics of The Battlechargers(Runamuck and Runabout), Skyshadow/ Black shadow, The Coneheads (Dirge, Ramjet, Thrust), and long requested basics of Brawn at last right? 😞🙏
I guess Doubledealer could sorta be seen as the inspiration for Armada's Sideways, not a triple changer really but he did have slightly different robot forms between his Autobot and Decepticon guises IIRC
Having a transformer that can turn into both a bird and vechicle to ‘double deal’ is a real cool concept and I’m kinda sad it didn’t come back or get alliterated on in the future.
*While WFC Knok and Skar were remolds of cassette based molds, they weren't really cassette tapes. They were used in Doubledealer in pretty much the exact same way. So you could still consider them Powermasters.*
Doubledealer always gets the best deals. The best action figures, best transformation gimmick, and best stories in the comic books. You will not make a bad deal when dealing with Doubledealer.

Fun fact from my history: When I was young, I have this faint recalling that I have actually handled G1 Doubledealer toy but didn't what it was at the time. For that, I should really have ER Doubledealer toy. I admit though that his T30 does even to this day itch my interest (despite flaws what T30 Blitzwing mold had). I would like Basics on Astrotrain as I would like to know (though I can guess) was his mold intented to be part of Diaclone series.
This was a great video and BTW Doubledealer G1 I still have in my collection today. Just a cool concept for a character after we had only known good vs evil from the start.
The latest Doubledealer/Clouder figure actually has the Powermaster/Godmaster gimmick...the "engine" on his torso comes off and you can attach it to the back of the cassettes.
i just realized in the earthrise show the coneheads aren't like their toy but rather the siege seekers toy so possible generation selects toys might make them like the show model
I love that Doubledealer is the father of all allegiance switching Transformers we have like Armada Sideways, Cybertron Sideways (Noisemaze) and by further extension Animated Shockwave who has a undercover mode, the universe Dinobot toy and Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia toy who both can switch between Predacon and Maximal factions
Earthrise Double Dealer having a cassette chamber kind of makes me want to make a custom Soundwave out if him. I'd change his head and colors, see if I can give him a more Soundwave like chest, and turn the bird mode into a bat.

As a kid this was one of my favorite transformers to play with. I never had him unfortunately one of friends did. So I only got to play with it at his house. I really liked his 3 different forms a lot.

Ah, Doubledealer. One of my favorite transformers of all time. The fact that he's a mercenary character who switches from autobot to decepticon is so interesting to me. After watching this video, I remember first being exposed to Doubledealer during the Thrilling 30s toyline of Generations. I once saw him at Target, and I didn't get him, due to my mom at the time trying to get me to stop getting Transformers toys because she said I was "too old" to be buying them. After then, I wouldn't see anything else of Doubledealer until War for Cybertron: Earthrise.
I remember seeing the Generation version toy in a toy shop but since I read beforehand with Blitzwing tight transformation which was the mold he was based from (still had the same issue), I didn't buy him!
I had the original and was a favourite :) but I lost one of the parts :( (Hmm, I'm surprised that that as far as I can tell there wasn't a story where Doubledealer encountered Punch/Counterpunch...)
Masterforce is pretty underrated...it's a shame we didn't get the anime in the West, instead of that god awful Rebirth miniseries...I just pretend it doesn't exist and watch Headmasters instead whenever I revisit the old series.

Masterforce is pretty underrated...it's a shame we didn't get the anime in the West, instead of that god awful Rebirth miniseries...I just pretend it doesn't exist and watch Headmasters instead whenever I revisit the old series.
