Saw quite a few while stationed at Bitburg AB, Germany 75-76. While the F-4E models were in the squadrons there, we routinely saw German and Italian F-104's show up. One particularly bad day, I had to cover the ECM shop that weekend, and a flight of 4 Italian F-104's that had been on the base for about 2 weeks. That Sunday morning, they were to return to their home base. I installed and tested the appropriate equipment, and saw the off. I went back to the cafeteria to have lunch, and an alert message came over the intercom, that, all 4 A/C had crashed into a mountain not half hour after they'd departed. God Bless 'em. They were great guys!
It seems to be Grosetto Airbase in Italy! Nowadays they are based Eurofighter Typhoon. Starfighter is Disbanded since 2004. Really Great Sound of the J 79 Engines, The F-4F Phantom II in my Homecountry Germany had also the same J 79 Engines but 2 instead 1. From 1962 - 1987 was the F- 104 G Starfighter also in Service at the German Airforce. And Nowadays we have the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Tornado. The F-4F Phantom II is out of Service since 2013. Greetings from the German Aircraft Spotter Coleague!
yes this crowling TF-104GM is nice to listen too . I was there and heard it with my eyes it was a great moment at that time im happy that i had the chance to film this .
In Norway, it was nicknamed "Vestfjordoksen" = "The Vestfjord Bull" when operating in that area from Bodø air base during the cold war, because of this strange howling or bellowing sound that it makes at a certain power setting :). Very cool :)
This is from the Italian Air Force. And the ones you see are the Augusta/ Lockheed F-104S and the S stands for the robot Sparrow. There were two TF-104S and the rest are F-104S. And not the F-104G that was delivered to the German Air Force and some to Italy.
I grew up on Air Bases and was very fortunate to see the F-104 program come to fruition at Luke, AFB. Dad was one of the original IP's to start the program. It was quite a privilege to see & hear those smokers in the traffic pattern. Dad summed it up so well when he said "Why fly the F-4? Twice the engine, same performance and less excitement."
The greatest jet aircraft engine sound ever, I grew up seeing (and hearing) F-104s at Prestwick, Scotland in 1960s, the only jet aircraft sound that came close was the VC-10.
I love the fact these venerable old birds are still flying. with upgraded avionics they are the equal to the f-16. maybe a bit nosier but all in all same performance and capabilities. God I love hearing these birds fly.
Hello sir youre right about this the J-79 engine of this TF-104GM produce this incredible sound in my opinion the the best sound ever heard in my life . thats the reason i went to Grosseto in november 2003 to film this nice aircraft at that time in the approach . Greetings from a F104 fan : Willem. Willemstarfighter .
When I was a 15 year old air cadet we visited RAF Coltishall. There were some RCAF F104 visiting. To hear that wonderful howl every afternoon and evening was just amazing. Mad to think now it was 40 years ago
unfortunately the only F-104s I saw were in a junk yard in Okinawa, they had 3 of them in the 1980s, I dunno if they were still there in the 90s when I left. but in the 80s, the USAF 18th TFW had the 25TRS flying RF-4Cs, and they sounded just like this. when taking off on full afterburner, they hissed more than they roared (unlike the F-15s), but coming in at part throttle for landing, the F-15s made the muted hissing sound and the RF-4Cs would be all WAAAOOOEEEOOOAAA (they had 2 J79-GE-15s each), they were a blast ^^ back then, Kadena also had KC-135As with water-injection J57s, I saw one taking off fully loaded in a plume of smoke and a earthshaking roar to beat all the fighter planes. but the loudest, bada$$est of all? the SR-71 taking off at night, all you saw was the twin blue-white cones of flame and you felt the knock-you-on-your-butt roar in your chest. ah memories...🛫
The howling sound of the 2 TF's fits the 104 so well. Noticed that only the TF's are producing the howl? Both the Italian and German airforces, planted a developed version of the J-79 in the F's and not in the TF's, because they didn't fit. The developed version of the J-79 has longer nozzle-vanes, that's why they don't have that howl anymore. The howl version is the J-79 GE 11A, the other, non-howl version, is the J-79 GE 17A. The howl used to scare my dad, because it reminded him of the Stuka..
yes youre right sir the sound of the J-79 engine is the best . that was the reason i went to Grosseto to film some of this nice birds . do you have seen my movie from kleine-brogel at youtoube with a formation of 4xTF104GM in the break at a F16 airport in Belgium . that is very great to hear the sound of this fighters .
Hello sir I have seen in 1996 at Volkel air base a visit from the spanisch airforce with 2 RF-4C . I shall never forget the sound of this engines they produced . they were fore a exercise there to fly mssions with the Dutch F-16 . but i can indeed remember that the sound of the phantom was different then from this starfigthers.
Hello sir no problem it was my hobby to make and collecting the films from the F104 . The starfigther is one of the best intercepters in the world . with a maximal speed of 2.4 mach .
yes i was my head reason to go with two other F104 fans to see the F104 at that airport at that time. but this circuit flying with this 2xTF-104GM is one of the best thin things i ever saw at that time especially that howling sound of the J-79 engine . really perfectly . enjoy this nice birds with their sound .
I´m always wondering if this special sound of the F104 really comes from the engine or from the air intake of the engine and the special shape of the wings...???!!!
Jesus that plane is sexy and captivating. I absolutely love them, New planes May be More combat capable but nothing beats the speed and aesthetics F-104s. Beside MiG-21s my favourite planes
no the F104 are stored now at Grazzanise you can see them with google earth . look bij Grazzanise in Italy thats the base now were a lot of them are standing now .
yes youre opinion is right the sound of this birds in incredible . the pilots know that i was filming there and it was a good performance from them fore me at that moment . This is filmed 9 years ago at Grosseto but we can enjoy this movie now with this starfighters every day at youtube .
what?? in grosseto?? i live there and didn't even noticed.it was probabably 2 or 3 years before the years of thise video that my father took near the airport at night time to see them landing, i was just a kid and will never forget those moments, my favourite aircraft ever!!!!
did you know that one of this, without the engine, is exposed along the street in a parking lot of a car wash?? the manager bought it, and anyone can enter free, at anytime to see it and even touch it!!!
Hello sir yes i can understand that i know that the Norwagian airforce had flying with the F-104G in the past i know where Bodo is situated because i have seen it in FS2004 . I can imagine the sound of the zipper between mountains of the surounding of Bodo it was great ill guess . The F-104G version is the best in my opinion .
I love the F-104.And that howling sound from the engine it is just awsome.
Me too
Wonderful!!Makes me smile, though very sad that they are no more. Many thanks, Willem.

yes me too its a great sound to listen too at Grosseto .
now they flying there with the eurofighter .
i like the F104 the most from al aircraft .
The sound of speed and power, devised at the beginning of the space age.
The symbol for RCAF airbase Cold Lake when we flew the CF-104s was the Arctic Wolf. I thought even then that it sounded like a Wolf's howl. Loved it.
no problem sir im a F104 fan and thats was the main reason to go to this airport to see at that time this nice sounded figthers .
I love the Starfighter!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😘😘😘😘😘😘💖💖💖💋💋💕💞💗💗💓💓💓💓😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great capture of the sound.
Those things just look squirrelly even when they’re just cruising along.. lots of instability it seems , mushing and sliding around

I´m always wondering if this special sound of the F104 really comes from the engine or from the air intake of the engine and the special shape of the wings...???!!!
It comes from the variable exhaust nozzles and is quite dominant in the 90-94% throttle setting as I remember it
Jesus that plane is sexy and captivating. I absolutely love them, New planes May be More combat capable but nothing beats the speed and aesthetics F-104s. Beside MiG-21s my favourite planes
If I wear my contact lenses for too long and they become too dry, all I have to do is to watch this video...
