THe other male singers in this production were also extraordinary, and Rene Pape brought tears to many eyes in the theatre in the first act. And oh my, the conducting and playing. It was the shortest 5 hours of my life., just flew by. And I wasn't even going to go.
I never get tired of watching this dvd. It's just amazing. Jonas Kaufmann IS Parsifal, he is a genius at bringing him to life and his voice, my God! He's magnificent. This stunning cast is a dream come true. I don't think there's ever been a stage production of Parsifal to beat this one.
Kaufmann is IT! .. The voice sends shivers up my spine.. His presence, interpretation is electric.. My God! I wished I could have heard this when I was in NYC.
Thank you. Jonas is my vocal idol. He is so self-possessed in his interpretations, and is able to convey so many subtleties in the text and music. We are lucky to have him in our generation and to hear him LIVE.
Saw this the other week. I am a traditionalist, but this was the best sung and music production I have heard. The cast was pitch perfect,Peter Mattei and René Pape were Amfortas and Gurnemanz ,Katarina Dalayman is one of my favorite current sopranos and played the schizophrenic nature of Kundry perfectly. We all know Kaufman has a great voice but his acting in the third act was amazing, at one point I thought he was levitating above the ground! François Girard has made a Rolls Royce opera.
Friends and I attended the HD performance on Saturday: we all agreed that it was the most beautiful performance of anything that we had seen but more importantly, it provided us with an incredible `experience'. I have seen a few Parsifals but this production manages to capture the essence of the work; no frills, no make believe, only the text and music. The singing was incredible and we look forward to see it live on Friday.
This is the most handsomeness of all Parsifals ever. Not only he is good looking but he has a great talent both singing and acting. Bravo! Jonas Kaufmann
he is a Master of "mezzi colori"/ vocal subcolors that transmit an enormous spectre of sentiments What a brain must be hiding behind that voice.. Every word he sings has a meaning
I think thats where Kaufmann is headed.. He is a brilliant singer.. Brilliant...... He is musical , good looking, interpretively exceptional.. Gorgeous voice. I cannot say enough about this man's talent.
Translation:Amfortas! The wound! The wound! It burns in my heart! O lament! Lament! Fearful lament! From deep in my heart it cries out Oh! Oh! Misery! Full despair! I saw the wound bleed; now it bleeds inside me Here - here! No! No! It's not the wound Flow in streams, my blood, from it! Here! Here in my heart it burns! The yearning, the fearful yearning, that has overtaken my senses! Oh! Love's suffering! How everything trembles, quakes and quivers in sinful desire!
Great reminder of a great performance. Went to the last performance at the Met 9 rows back orchestra center. Couldn't see all the 2nd act "blood" from that vantage point. Went backstage afterwords an got Jonas & Rene's autographs in the hall outside their dressing rooms. Quite a night!
I have to agree about Kaufmann in the 3rd act. After just under 6 hours, I was still transfixed on his persona as the Knight of the Grail. Extreamely emotional moment. Wish someone would post that.
In the theatre when I saw the HD broadcast, at least three people near me just stage-whispered "Holy shit!" after the first word......an extraordinary performance on all counts - and the spectacular playing of the Met orchestra under Gatti was the other big star besides Pape and Kaufmann
Yesterday I listened to an earlier recording of the last act and I used the enclosed book with the text. It made things really clear. The book was from the LP recording which is so much better to read from..
Looks like that won't happen at the Met anytime soon. Saw Tosca at the Movie theater from La Scala with Kaufmann. He was magnificent the staging was awesome and traditional, also awesome to see.

well, it's a very mature voice and powerfull, but parsifal is a kid of 16 years old or so, but of course it's impossible to have a kid with the necessary voice

they can put Jonas to sing inside a wc, he will still remain a God... but it really is a shame that such a God sings in "modern" productions Nevertheless we dont see the production at all.. his voice covers everything
Tempo is way too glacially slow. Parsifal is a piece with which you should take your time, but to just play it as slowly as you possibly can does not make for an engaging or moving musical experience. Jonas and the staging are, however, magnificent.
For Sure! A while back some idiot described his voice derisively as a baritenor... whatever the hell he meant by that.. Kaufmann has a dark colored voice with plenty of brilliance and range on top.. I get sick of these folk that think the only true tenor is a lyric...
Parsifal is the one true king of the Holy Grail succeeding amfortas the Guardian of the Grail Castle, and from Him subsequent Creation ensued. Parcifal is the King of the Holy Grail Castle.#Pentecost
I agree with you assessment completely. I saw Morris in his prime in a Miami Walkure back in the late '80's and he was excellent. Terfyl has evolved into a real artist, but Wotan is a bit much for him. Voigt was a pretty mediocre Brunnhilde. Nilsson, Valkii, and Grob Prandl sang circiles around her. By the way, how's everything at Petticoat Junction, these days. I haven't kept in touch.
Oh now I get it, I'm glad I just listened to this on the radio. At the risk of opprobrium, I will say that I think the sets costumes the fake blood etc.etc. ridiculous and laughable. What's wrong with putting this great opera in an appropriate and believable setting? Is it that there would be (dare we say it) ~~ connotations?
Yes I agree the cast is fantastic here with a great deal of energy, one of the best Parsifal's I've heard. A pity about the staging but unfortunately that's the current fashion - because unlike traditional staging it's easy to do and gets lots of attention but above all it's CHEAP.
I thought this Parsifal was more visually interesting than the 4-part Ring cycle at the Met. When this comes out on DVD, I will probably buy it even though I generally hate the camera angles and camera work of those Met people.
fabulous Behrens? big top with a tendency to get unexpectedly coarse and inaudible low (she swallowed the low) and Wagner without a low voice .. But yes she was much better than Voigt, still she was a thousand light years beneath the wagnerian Goddesses Varnay and Nilsson at their prime

I don`t agree that the production is `modern`; it is 'intemporelle' which is what makes it so moving, so true.

Damn! They cut the video just when the main leitmotif was going to sound :(
I still remember how stunned I was on my first hearing of Kaufmann's. I thought to myself: a tenor? No, a baritone!
You are welcome. Without knowing the meaning of the words - the singers might just as well vocalize! Which I am sure they do very well :)

Could you imagine having to to the cast's laundry after every performance? "Someone help get this corn syrup out of these sheets"
Looks like the elevator scene from the Shining, hate to see the laundry bill.
I see. And this is in Wagner's written synopsis and stage direction? I don't remember reading that.
I heard there was lots of blood . . . they weren't kidding! Of course Jonas is divine.
Rumor has it that the blood weighs so much they won't be able to repeat the opera next year.

I didn't mind the blood, but the backdrop to the second act was positively pornographic in its resemblance to a woman's body part.
