Musicality like this is very rare. Jonas combines strength of voice with quiet passages. He builds up an aria and it's like he carries you along with the melody. So very expressive. Just listen to that crescendo at the end. ❤ Not many tenors can sing this melodically. Most just sing out the aria with very little colour in it.

Yes Mannail888 is clearly a disgruntled soul. I'm preparing a talk for our music appreciation society comparing singers of different ages. As I've been doing some research you begin to read about the dearth of great singers in every generation. I suspect that a 100 years from now singers like JK will be seen as the golden era. I've not heard JK live but his singing on film and record is very good. The present era is one where every performance is scrutinised, filmed (on phones) so any off nights are viewed as the beginning of the end!

    • @chris57de

And... I have to add to your comment, that there are others that are entitled to their opinion whether they prefer this or that singer better, from this time or before. And... yes, he's a good singer with a beautiful voice but I don't feel the same way you do about him. Btw... taking time to heal means bad technique or too much too soon. Salute!

What on earth was that? The production, I mean. Sometimes I really do fantasise about taking these 'conceptual' directors outside and shooting them far into the galaxy on a one-way trip - perhaps, say, when Richard bloody Branson finally gets his commercial spaceship up (pun intended) and running! I'm happy to start a collection.

The vocal production is as throaty as it's guttural, with distinctive
register breaks. Notes off the stave are squeezed out without any
build-up and in many sequence smudged. Legato is as abundant as rainfall
in Sahara. Stylistically, he's all over the place in addition to the
fact that he is channeling his inner Renee Fleming in that every word,
every sentence is fussed and tweaked to the extent that any sense of
spontaneity is lost. Those comparison to the legendary Jon Vickers by
certain so-called critics is simply preposterous. The Canadian's voice
is naturally produced and is employed with the greatest artistry,
whereas the voice of "the most gorgeous thing on the lyric stage today"
(so claimed by thousands and thousands of queens around the globe) is
weirdly produced, sounding synthetic and grating.

Kaufmann's ascent to the top is indicative of a dearth of satisfactory
tenors on the international classical music circuit. Voice alone, he
would be assigned comprimario roles were he active in the fifties.
Seeing that Mexican clown is throwing in the towel after repeated throat
surgeries, the establishment tries to do it all over again by
manufacturing another superstar tenor, one who's only capable of singing
extremely awfully but is marketable with the bearing of a matinee idol.
One who's ruthlessly ambitious and willing to place utmost priority on
reaching the top over everything, including the attainment of art, one
who's well versed in the art of prostituting art but cares little, and
probably knows nothing, about art. Of course, the establishment includes
big time impresarios, opera house directors, international recording
companies and critics affiliated with mass media conglomerate. He also
needs to have a personality that's as affable as it's weird. Weird
because he has to understand the fine art of boot-licking and abusing
the hand (the fans) that feeds him in the same time. Then, a star or,
more accurately, a pseudo opera singer is born.
Kaufmann's groupie and that Mexican clown's are probably the most
wretched people in the world because they choose a fate that's more
abhorrent than reveling in drenching themselves in a tub composed of
toxins and human secretion (the unsavory kind): they choose to steep
      themselves in self-abasement and hideousness.

While the works of Verdi is a genre unto itself and is generally not
included in the bel canto bracket, it is still of vital significance
that the main protagonists of his operas be taken by singers with an
Italian approach, and who are steeped in the bel canto tradition as if
to the manor born. Not that the role of Aida and her lover, Radames are
exclusively the domain of Italians. Bjorling, a Swede, is a great
Captain of the Egyptian army. He is also great as Manrico, Duke of
Mantua and Riccardo (Bello). Leontyne price, an African-American, is
sublime as the Ethiopian princess/slave. She is also tremendous as the
two Leonoras (Trovatore and Forza). These two non-Italian
singers succeeded not because of birthright, but because they trod the
Italian repertoire with an deep-seated Italian approach and profound
understanding of bel canto. And how about "La Divina", a Greek, who
turns Italian opera into a greater art form than it probably is. How? By
being the greatest exponent of bel canto.
What's so detrimental is that not only is this faux Don Alvaro hailing
from Germany deadly unidiomatic but also didn't have a clue as to what
      constitute bel canto.

The way he sang actually hurt his throat considerably. Haven't anyone found that he always tends to crack at the transition between mid range and high range? The tone sounds a little bit weird like screaming. His adam apple and tongue are typically, I would not say incorrect, but... anyway I've heard him singing other arias, the 'crack' is a common issue.
He makes me think of Giuseppe di Stefano, using too much throaty voice.
I guarantee Jonas Kaufmann would easily get trouble in his throat.

Actually, Di Stefano sounded quite natural, but the cost was that he sometimes (especially later) did not cover his voice. Kaufmann has different vocal issues, the artificial darkening being the most obvious one. So I am not sure about this comparison in general. Regarding this particular aria, I feel the need to say Di Stefano's version is one of the most beautiful 8 minutes of singing I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

because he has to understand the fine art of boot-licking and abusing
the hand (the fans) that feeds him in the same time.

"Bitter", party of one, your table is ready...........Obviously your not capable of seeing a little good in everyone. I doubt you would recognize a good opera singer if you fell over one, let alone heard one.........You come across as a very unhappy individual. Spew your venom somewhere else!!!!!

The vocal production is as throaty as it's guttural, with distinctive
register breaks. Notes off the stave are squeezed out without any
build-up and in many sequence smudged. Legato is as abundant as rainfall in Sahara.
(so claimed by thousands and thousands of queens around the globe) is weirdly produced, sounding synthetic and grating.

Who died and made you God? I happen to believe Franco Corelli was one of the greatest tenors ever - and he had the good sense to retire when he was still at the top of his game. But your cruel, puerile name calling shows me that the only person steeped in toxins is you. Utterly vile.

My God, you're not only enormously unpleasant you are homophobic as well. There's no polite way of putting it to someone like you, so I shall just say it: fuck off you nasty old fart. You are the very worst example of the kind of world-class twattery that exists amongst the so-called opera cognoscenti.

causabon79's defense of this faux Alvaro is emblematic of those people who, when made aware of such revelation as that which they had held dear amounted to nothing in actuality, would snap, usually in the form of calling every name in the books, acting erratically and throwing violent tantrum at every possible opportunity. Completely unable to tear themselves from such self-abasement and hideousness they continue to revel in their gruesome situation and even try to drag other gullible and unsuspecting people into their sunken pit. It's so sad that "causabon79" has chosen such grotesquely horrendous life.

Singing OK, but the production is soooo bad. Why on earth do those directors have to spoil masterpieces with such silly settings? Shame.

Slow, boring, throaty, too often out of tune and absolutely out of Verdi's line of singing style... and with the usual (full of crap) acting that portrays the same emotions of a cheap telefilm. At least he is lasting longer than Villa-bufón and doesn't look like Mr. Bean. Of course I am joking, I loved the whole thing and I felt completely overwhelmed by the dramatic effect of that long wig...

I think that was a cruel crack at Rolando Villazon. You should be ashamed of yourself.

causabon99 The only thing to be ashamed of is how impresarios, theaters and discographic companies keep on shitting on Verdi's, Puccini's, etc... masterpieces every week. To understand the rich tradition of opera and belcanto one needs a certain level of culture. Nowadays prefabricated "div@s" are for uneducated audiences. My advice for you is to search for the truth if you love this art form and think twice before clapping like a chimp, buddy.

      and ill-mannered?🤷‍♀️

I thought he sang better in this Forza than in the Trovatore but I find vocal comparisons to others beyond my expertise and even if it wasn't I probably would not indulge in it. However, those who think everything JK does is great might not recognize something special.
