I’am a lot older than you, now 71 years old, still fit for my age, been going for mourning 3K runs at 6am, can’t beat seeing the sunrise. But I’ve been to over 50 countries in Europe, South/Central America, Africa and now S.E.Asia, seen enough to satisfy my curiosity! I still travel at a slower pace, but just within the countries surrounding Thailand! Once you’re over 50 you can get a retirement visa, stay up to 180 days, if your worried about tax implications and skip around the other S.E.Asian countries 😊
This is exactly how I will be travelling for the first 5 years or so starting in 3 weeks time , need to explore the world it is a big place and many places to see......Another great vlog .🙂
Albania gives US citizens 1 year Visa Free stays and the cost of living is low...we base out of Saranda or Tirana in Albania when we bounce around Europe. Vietnam (Da Nang) is our home base when we do SE Asia. I love the nomad lifestyle!
@RetireandGo Albania lies intersectionally between Italy, Greece, and Turkey...though it is its own unique culture. Albanians are some of the MOST generous and hospitable people in the world. Cost of living is similar to Bangkok. You get meat and fish dishes like Greece, pizza and pasta like Italy and kebabs and wraps like Turkey. It also has a huge coffee culture with the #1 coffee consumption per capita of any other country. UA-camr "Go for the Unknown" has a good summary video of Albania ua-cam.com/video/mlZdTYAhQZw/v-deo.htmlsi=xI7V4RPsRbj_Hk4l. I think you might enjoy Albania.
@roam do you have a channel or blog on how you do “home bases”? Do you do long-term rentals in those locations and then travel? I’ve been hearing a lot about Albania and also Romania and Slovenia.
@maryswanson2412 In Vietnam, we did a "home base" out of Da Nang. We were able to do a longer term (6 months) rate of $450/mo. We then left most our luggage in the apartment and took budget airlines around SE Asia. This time for Europe, we'll fly into Paris for a week, then take a budget airline to Albania. We'll stay for about a month, then pop over to another European destination then back to a new Albanian location. We may or may not keep double accommodations while we're in Europe depending on price. The main advantage with Albania is that while we're in the country, our "days" don't count towards the Schengen cap of 90 days within a 180 day period, whereas other Schengen countries do.
I looked at alabania In quite a few videos and rentals on fb. I think it's pretty pricey but that's my opinion. Compared to vietnam and the Philippines it's more expensive.
Lol. The blooper is awesome. I love that. Hmm. The noise ..that happened with my husband and I in the Gulf of Mexico, no storm was visible, no prior rain, ect , and wow, a crack of lightening came down in the middle of our front yard with the bluest sky you ever had seen in your life. It's literally called out of the blue lightening and travels from a storm that is a decent distance away. Crazy.

We've been travelling full-time just over 3 years. Once counted a few months ago and it had been 9 countries and 65 different accommodations ranging from hotels, airbnb and short and long leases. We had 2 different retirement visas in Thailand but have again chosen not to renew it. I agree with your style of moving around according to the visa free/exemption or visa on arrival etc. Vietnam is lovely and 3 months now, easy to leave and come back and I like Malaysia too for their 90 days. We did Mexico for 5 months (that was awesome to get the 180 days) Costa Rica was 90 days and the Dominican Republic is stay however long and pay overstay according to a government agreement. We're from Australia so SEA is the easiest for us to hang around 😊
@@thesummerthatwas76 yes it does get tiring sometimes and we're having a 5 month break in Australia soon. Get busy living or get busy dying. I’m like you. I’m in good physical condition and want to explore SE Asian as a slow traveler for a while. There will come a time when I won’t be a nimble and will chose one two or three home bases. Slow travel is more interesting, more vitalizing, filled with more to learn and I will have no regrets when I get older. I’m like you, although I have extended one time a visa for 30 days because of the locals I met and the rare opportunity to grow as a person
from all the travel vloggers i see on YT, you are the only one I can relate to. I agree with probably all of your points, from other videos as well. I'm glad you're making videos like these! Cheers!
Great Video 👏 FYI - there is a new visa called DTV destination Thailand visa … you can stay up to 180 days at a time now for 5 years. Cost is 10 000 baht and has to be applied for outside of Thailand. Proof of 500 000 in any bank account. And many “reasons” to get this visa, including a simple medical appointment (called soft power options). It’s quite amazing and might be good. Only came in after you did this video. There maybe tax implications for staying in Thailand more than 180 days a year.
100% agreed. Our plan is to spend at most 3 months in any one destination. Would you like to explore as many opportunities as possible. I know for sure that we are never going to have this opportunity again. Off to Bali in a couple of days, did do the pre-visa only for the ease of getting thru the immigration line and if we want to stay for 3 months (arrival, only can get 30 days, with a month extension. would be the same price as the prearrival, 90 day visa)
I think because I was in the Military for 20 years, that I will never be able to stay in one place ever again in my life. I believe for the forseable future i will be also be on the move.
I agree. I have a visa but I will not be renewing it. I used to do the same as you and I'm going return to using the tourist visa. Maria and Col from pattaya

i like your travel method. I'm right there with ya. I got a 10 years visa in Bolivia at arrival. Crazy. But I do plan to get a retirement multiple entry visa for Thailand next year.
Looks like Thailand bumped its visa on arrival length to 60 days as of July. With that said, I'm curious if you will be switching to 60 day stays in Thailand?
What’s up Brother!!! Longtime no see!! I am going through UA-cam and I see one of your videos! Looks like you are doing good! I retired years ago. The last two years living in Thailand!! Hope to run into each other sometime! Take care!
movement is the natural human activity I totally agree with the slow-madic approach. In any event circulating around just S.E.Asia on tourist visa's is unlimited and as a Canuck distances are relative small. Thanks and happy trails.
I love roaming around, my current project has had me in hotels and AirB@Bs for over 1400 nights in 38 states, in big and small cities, 2 days to 2 months in an area. When my extended vacations starts I will continue roaming around, but it will be in SE Asia. I travel light like you, no checked bags, it makes it great. Cheers
You made some very intriguing points regarding movement and relating it to your upbringing and a career in the military. I guess they certainly go hand in hand. Regarding Cheap Charlie's, I find some of their meals hit and miss. But it's amongst the best value in Pattaya. However, there was once a restaurant/café about 100 yards before CC's in the same side, which opened in early 2010 and upon entry you'd grab a stainless steel mug, fill it with ice and the water was free. Then you'd glance over the menu and meals started at 30 baht, rising to 50/60 baht for the larger portion and a more costly dish. Sadly since the pandemic it's seldom open.
As long as there is decent coffee i don't much care where i am. So when traveling do all the hotel nights add up to less than a months rent in the states so that it is cheaper living over there and moving around. If you are not in a state do you have to pay any state tax?
And then you have to worry about getting poisoned with scopolamine on dates. Yeah, no thanks. I love it how in Thailand you can literally walk around with an expensive watch on and you're safe (if you choose to). You can go to an ATM grab money and you're safe. Can't do any of that in Colombia not even close. Screw Colombia.
I love your videos. I am in a similar situation as I live in a very expensive country (Canada), but do you feel lonely and isolated travelling solo and living alone in foreign countries?
This is a very real and important question thank you. Yes, it can get lonely if you don’t open up to saying hello to locals as you travel. If you can smile and say hello, you won’t get lonely. You can start wonderful conversations and start friendships
@@RetireandGo my first travel was @ age 4 in 1965 to London. After some years of old man invisibility in the USA, I finally ventured to SEA last yr. My 1st trip to Pattaya is in 2 weeks. 💯😎
You must be my lost twin brother... I get the same itch to move all the time. I was a Navy brat. Usually a year or two, but several places we only lived for 5 or 6 months. It's definitely in my blood like you said.
17.45 I am in Malaysia a new tax was introduced as tourist tax in top of all the taxes by the hotel, I was refused an invoice I booked through “ Expedia” after they called the hotel I was given an invoice.
How do tourist visas upon arrival work? Is it set up at the airport somewhere? How do you find out before arrivial what the visas allow. Planning some travel in 2025 and have never traveled like this before so feeling very unsure of many things, but looking forward to the experience. Thanks for any info you can share.
@@RetireandGo but you can do short stays in Airbnbs too. In many parts of SE Asia you can get a nice condo apartment for a month for 600-800 dollars. Anyway, I'm sure you've already looked into it ;)
It would be really cool if you started a spreadsheet showing your monthly expenses over a year as you travel. I know it would definitely help all of us looking to travel year round throughout south east Asia. 🤙🏼 Also when they finally implement the 60 day on arrival visa exemption do you think you will do two months a time in Thailand?
@@RetireandGo not the greatest on what kind of spreadsheets. It would be awesome to see your spending for others interested in doing what you're doing (to include me 😂)
How can you stay in Thailand long ? I’m thinking about retiring and moving there. Even with a retirement visa it is only good for 1 year. I can’t see paying a fortune for their premium visa. Possibly going to Phuket in August for 3 weeks. Love your videos!
I use a travel insurance as I bounce around south east Asia Google top 5 travel health insurance companies for Asia. They all are rather close I pay $100 a month
you like packing and unpackingAs long as your health is good then its not an issue. You will find it is far more challenging if you start to have health issues. You can have 10 year visas just in case. I save money doing long term rents. The LTR visa costs a mere 50,000 bhat for a 10 year stay. Thailand does not tax LTR visa holders on foreign income, but I hear you. Malaysia does not tax foreign income as well. Enjoy
Hi there... first of all A BIG Thank You very much for creating your channel and sharing your own experience with us. In that video you already brought me a wider point of you on retrering in Asia (I'm a former Singapore Airlines in France). I am actually in Pattaya and I was battling with myself in between the different visas. I couln't start any procedure. As a former airlines staff, I was used to travel in different countries, changing of places whenever I am not confortable in a place or when I start to be feb up for being to many days in the same place. By the way I really appreciate the tip about the 3 months "Visa on Arrival" for Malaysia..and I love Malaysia. Please I have a question for you. Do you know how long is the minimun days required in between each "Visa(s) on arrival in Thailand. Should it be 1 week? 2 weeks, I month or more? Thanks again, I'm very Grateful of your more than necessary work. Wishing you to be surrounded with happyness and Blessings
Even with the long term visa, you can travel overseas. You just have to get reentry petmit or multiple entry. Not a problem. You don't need to stay long in one country, when you like travelling. Enjoy life.
True about the taxes, that’s the main reason I gave up my Colombia visa, they apply double taxation, meaning the foreign country will tax you on your worldwide income and the penalties are stiff if you don’t report and they find out, some countries have a mutual agreement with the USA where they don’t double tax…always good to check first if it’s going to be an issue.
In terms of cash, any advice? Since you're on a tourist visa, I reckon you don't have a bank account. How do you solve this? Do you bring loads of money with you?
Can't quite pinpoint the video, but I believe somebody claimed they contracted Dengue fever in Pai? I may have got the video mixed up with another on the Amazon.
I totally understand Check out one year digital nomad visa in Indonesia Application is online Also Philippines and Laos are starting long digital nomad visa programs
Thanks for a good video take along. What you say is true...I lived in Thailand for 7 years & after awhile it did get old...the visa thing I mean. Because you have a yearly extension to do...Thinking you got a year to stay? No you still need to check in every 90 days. If you want to visit another place outside the border you need a re-entry permit for that visa. If you want to stay at another spot even inside the country other than your "official" address even just overnight by right the owner of hotel B&B etc needs to file a TM30...Does get old 😉
@@RetireandGo thank you very much! I will be heading to Pattaya in 10 days. I am so burnt out of Pattaya. I have been only going there for like eight years. It’s time to do something new. Thanks again. Any Kuala Lumpur hotel you wanna recommend that would make it real easy for me. Mainly because I am a boomer.
Good info and I feel the same, been coming to Thailand for a long time, but committing to the place my gut feeling and the accountant in me says no, no, no, because its far too risky and too much hassle with the visas, plus all this nonsense about them wanting to tax me after I have already paid tax on it. IF they offered a 3 or 6 month visa, great but I will not be depositing 800k baht into a bank account with no interest when rates are at 5% plus probably no guarantee for foreigners. Buy a condo there? What for? $0 capital gain and I am hearing its a real hassle to sell as there is oversupply, logic tells me to rent only, keep my house in my homeland, rent that out and use that as a base. Also Philippines is very attractive, you can extend tourist visa up to 36 months!! great weather, beaches even better, great food too and have plenty of Thai. If Thailand wants my money, make it easy for me, not hard.
That was part of my comment from a few days ago that disappeared - you can extend the 30 day visa, but best to keep moving. Damn it, you're living my life!! Soon, soon. Note: visa on arrival is different from the visa exemption. Visa on arrival requires a photo, form, ฿2,000, etc. - it's just done on arrival. Exemption is, "Woohoo! Come on in!"
Those times in Thailand when you're all set up and you don't feel like leaving but you MUST leave every 60 days (if you're on a tourist visa). I'd rather be on a long-term visa and travel when I want to - - - on my own schedule.
wow you are from Oahu aren't you? I thought you are from mainland, usually it makes sense for people go mainland US to other countries to retire. Oahu or Hawaii in general is beautiful. The short clip you have at the end is wakiki beach right? I love Thailand, SE Asia and everything but Oahu has it all. The beach, the hikes, the lust greens and everything. Food is okay, but japanese food in Hawaii is comparable to Japan. If i was living in Oahu i wouldn't retire in Thailand unless i have some kind of financial problems, even then you can get food stamps and etc and still live well in Oahu.
You seem to be confused about the difference between visa exemption and visa on arrival. Visa exemption is given to tourists from most of the western countries including USA, UK, and Australia.
Smart man deserve to happy in the colourful retire life. Cheers man. I suggest don't eat too much fried food, it could damage your blood later on, suggesting watch some food experts like Dr Guntry or Dr Eric Berg video in UA-cam, protect yourself keeping heathy would be much extend you wonderful journey lifestyle.
Yes. You get it online and costs about 90-130$. You should get it in advance and have the visa-letter print out in paper copy to show when arriving. And there is no limit on visa runs - you can leave and come back the next day with a new 90day visa. Vietnam is wonderful. PS:;when getting your VN visa shop around different sites because some of them try to charge you more based on your country. Try different sites to get better price.
As for Mexico, I thought they were no longer just giving out 6 months anymore. They want to know you itnerary and will give you just enough time for your travel plans in Mexico.
I respect your opinion on short term visas however air fare is now exorbitant and unless you are crossing borders by bus applying for a long term visa (if possible) is more feasible. Using your new home as a hub to travel in and out to other countries for short term visits is a more viable option.
Dude, have movement but you should base out of Thailand. As an American you have a 30 day stamp on your passport which you can extend again another 30 days. That's not nearly enough time. Have a reasonably priced place in for example Bangkok and travel from there. Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is the easiest international airport in the world to travel out of.

Then you'd glance over the menu and meals started at 30 baht, rising to 50/60 baht for the larger portion and a more costly dish. Sadly since the pandemic it's seldom open.
Good points
Yes, the meals can be hit or miss
As long as there is decent coffee i don't much care where i am. So when traveling do all the hotel nights add up to less than a months rent in the states so that it is cheaper living over there and moving around. If you are not in a state do you have to pay any state tax?
I agree
I just need a good coffee :-)
Very little tax
Dividend income is a great way to go !
I’ll make more nomad income tax videos
I respect your wise decision!!! 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It’s good to learn all the options :-)
Have a great day
In Colombia. A 90 day visa on arrival. Then a 90 day extension visa you can do on line and pay 125000 pesos $33. easy peasy
I want to go to Colombia for sure !
Nightclubs with wild music playing next to your hotel 😅😅😅😅
Haha sometimes yes
I travel with silicone ear plugs for swimmers
For flights and hotels
It shuts it all down
I love your videos.
I was wondering what was behind your wandering spirit. Happy Travels!
Good question
Military father
Moved energy two years
Then the high cost of the US
How about you ?
@@RetireandGo my first travel was @ age 4 in 1965 to London. After some years of old man invisibility in the USA, I finally ventured to SEA last yr. My 1st trip to Pattaya is in 2 weeks. 💯😎
You must be my lost twin brother... I get the same itch to move all the time. I was a Navy brat. Usually a year or two, but several places we only lived for 5 or 6 months. It's definitely in my blood like you said.
I was a military brat too :-)
Yeah, we have that travel bug in us
17.45 I am in Malaysia a new tax was introduced as tourist tax in top of all the taxes by the hotel, I was refused an invoice I booked through “ Expedia” after they called the hotel I was given an invoice.
That is so frustrating! Sorry this happened
How do tourist visas upon arrival work? Is it set up at the airport somewhere? How do you find out before arrivial what the visas allow. Planning some travel in 2025 and have never traveled like this before so feeling very unsure of many things, but looking forward to the experience. Thanks for any info you can share.
Great question
A visa on arrival is usually stamped into your passport when you arrive at the airport
Its not less hassle, its more hassle because you have to pack and move and unpack and find new condo all the time.
It can seem that way haha
I love to stay mobile though :-)
Enjoying your videos a lot! How come you don't stay in Airbnbs and prefer hotels? Very curious.
Great question
My short stays are the main reason
But they are great
@@RetireandGo but you can do short stays in Airbnbs too. In many parts of SE Asia you can get a nice condo apartment for a month for 600-800 dollars. Anyway, I'm sure you've already looked into it ;)
. . . A rolling stone gathers no moss.
Good point !
I agree
Have you had to show departure tickets when you arrive in these countries? Some countries want to know you are leaving.
Great question
I would say three times I’ve been asked
It happens
I try to have follow on trips booked
It would be really cool if you started a spreadsheet showing your monthly expenses over a year as you travel. I know it would definitely help all of us looking to travel year round throughout south east Asia. 🤙🏼
Also when they finally implement the 60 day on arrival visa exemption do you think you will do two months a time in Thailand?
This is an interesting idea
I do mention my stocks
And I target $24,000 a year income from investments
Are there spreadsheet platforms you like?
@@RetireandGo not the greatest on what kind of spreadsheets. It would be awesome to see your spending for others interested in doing what you're doing (to include me 😂)
How can you stay in Thailand long ? I’m thinking about retiring and moving there. Even with a retirement visa it is only good for 1 year. I can’t see paying a fortune for their premium visa. Possibly going to Phuket in August for 3 weeks. Love your videos!
There are long visas of many kinds available
Come stay for 30 days first
Talk to a visa specialist here in Thailand
Decide where you want to live
How's the air quality there last time I was in Thailand it was fierce..
The traffic in Thailand can bring some exhaust emissions
About mid day
Out of curiosity what health insurance do you recommend in Thailand? And if you was to stay for 1-3 years what's the best way regarding visa ?
I use a travel insurance as I bounce around south east Asia
Google top 5 travel health insurance companies for Asia.
They all are rather close
I pay $100 a month
you like packing and unpackingAs long as your health is good then its not an issue. Enjoy
This is darn good information
Please start social media
People need to know this
i make enough money without social media. good luck and goodbye
Have you explored t sing Airbnb for monthly rentals in any SE Asian countries? Good channel!
I agree
I should look into air bnb more
I like the hotel amenities though
And 24 hour front desk
But you are right, better prices
Hi there... first of all A BIG Thank You very much for creating your channel and sharing your own experience with us.
Very kind of you and thank you for this wonderful comment
Even with the long term visa, you can travel overseas. You just have to get reentry petmit or multiple entry. Not a problem. You don't need to stay long in one country, when you like travelling. Enjoy life.
Nice
I’m looking at a long term Indonesia visa
So, approximately much are you spending each year bouncing between all those countries with everything included?
I keep ever month under 2000 American
That’s the plan
Boom
True about the taxes, that’s the main reason I gave up my Colombia visa, they apply double taxation, meaning the foreign country will tax you on your worldwide income and the penalties are stiff if you don’t report and they find out, some countries have a mutual agreement with the USA where they don’t double tax…always good to check first if it’s going to be an issue.
Yes true
Long term visas
We have to be careful
In terms of cash, any advice? Since you're on a tourist visa, I reckon you don't have a bank account.
How do you solve this? Do you bring loads of money with you?
An online bank account can give you 5 % returns
That’s awesome
I use a few different brokerages
Are the mosquitoes bad? What do you use for them? Have you or do you know anyone who has had dengue fever?
Good point
Use spray if you have to
I have not noticed too much problem with mosquitoes
Can't quite pinpoint the video, but I believe somebody claimed they contracted Dengue fever in Pai? I may have got the video mixed up with another on the Amazon.
My 90 days is up soon in Malaysia. Off to Thailand for 30 days and then maybe come back to Malaysia or go somewhere else.
I totally understand
Check out one year digital nomad visa in Indonesia
Application is online
Also Philippines and Laos are starting long digital nomad visa programs
Thanks for a good video take along. What you say is true...I lived in Thailand for 7 years & after awhile it did get old...the visa thing I mean. Because you have a yearly extension to do...Thinking you got a year to stay? No you still need to check in every 90 days. If you want to visit another place outside the border you need a re-entry permit for that visa. If you want to stay at another spot even inside the country other than your "official" address even just overnight by right the owner of hotel B&B etc needs to file a TM30...Does get old 😉
The year long visas can cost
I would like to see a cheap one year visa !
@@RetireandGo Or better yet something like my wife got when she moved to USA 2 year then 10 year or Citizenship 😉
Agree 3 mo ths at a time is enough Avoid the hot and rainy season as well as global taxation.

New viewer here. I’m curious about Malaysia and can you recommend a town/city for a first time male visitor?
I would start with a low cost inner city hotel in Kuala Lumpur
Then after a week or second trip, explore island in Malaysia next
@@RetireandGo thank you very much! I will be heading to Pattaya in 10 days. I am so burnt out of Pattaya. I have been only going there for like eight years. It’s time to do something new.
I would love to see a 6 month on arrival !
Thailand won't let you stay in the country for more than 6 months in a year on just a tourist visa. How do you avoid the overstay ban?
I only stay 30 days then I go to the next country
Vietnam Indonesia Malaysia Philippines
That was part of my comment from a few days ago that disappeared - you can extend the 30 day visa, but best to keep moving. Damn it, you're living my life!! Soon, soon. Note: visa on arrival is different from the visa exemption. Visa on arrival requires a photo, form, ฿2,000, etc. - it's just done on arrival. Exemption is, "Woohoo! Come on in!"
You have a fantastic journey ahead of you !
Keep us updated !
I’m excited for you
Those times in Thailand when you're all set up and you don't feel like leaving but you MUST leave every 60 days (if you're on a tourist visa). I'd rather be on a long-term visa and travel when I want to - - - on my own schedule.
Good point!
That is working for you and I appreciate the feedback
You can only enter Thaialnd twice per calender year by air. Is this true?
By ground, be careful, but by air, no problem

wow you are from Oahu aren't you? I thought you are from mainland, usually it makes sense for people go mainland US to other countries to retire. Oahu or Hawaii in general is beautiful. The short clip you have at the end is wakiki beach right? I love Thailand, SE Asia and everything but Oahu has it all. The beach, the hikes, the lust greens and everything. Food is okay, but japanese food in Hawaii is comparable to Japan. If i was living in Oahu i wouldn't retire in Thailand unless i have some kind of financial problems, even then you can get food stamps and etc and still live well in Oahu.
Yeah it just got too expensive in Hawaii
I rented out my home there
Sold everything else
Invested it all in dividend stocks and left for Asia
You seem to be confused about the difference between visa exemption and visa on arrival. Visa exemption is given to tourists from most of the western countries including USA, UK, and Australia.
Thank you for this !
The information is appreciated
Smart man deserve to happy in the colourful retire life. Cheers man. I need to ease up on the fried foods
Great video! I’ve heard that getting an E-visa for Vietnam gets you 90 days. Cheers.
- Javier and Fon
That might be the way to go !
I will be in Vietnam later this year
I hear Montenegro is amazing and affordable, still not a well known country yet
I have heard great things about it!

It’s not for everyone
I was disappointed that you didn't give the dog a piece of your steak. He looked starved.

Just giving my reasons
As for Mexico, I thought they were no longer just giving out 6 months anymore. They want to know you itnerary and will give you just enough time for your travel plans in Mexico.

Do you find that you get more views in one particular country over others ? If so, which country gets the most views ?
Hmmm it changes a little
I think I need to revisit some locations to get more attention on it
Good question
Presumably you factor in air fares?😅
Yes
Still living under 2000 a month
I respect your opinion on short term visas however air fare is now exorbitant and unless you are crossing borders by bus applying for a long term visa (if possible) is more feasible. Using your new home as a hub to travel in and out to other countries for short term visits is a more viable option.
It’s good to look at all the options
There are some other great ways to go :-)
Flights within South East Asia is quite inexpensive.
