- This week I thought I'd head away to the Otways Ranges in Victoria, Australia with my girlfriend and share my thoughts on my recently repaired 1970 Gibson Hummingbird guitar.
The previous video on the Hummingbird can be seen here:
• I bought a vintage Hum...
The amazing neck reset and other repairs were done by Brenden Mason from Real Guitars in Melbourne.

I don't have a comment about hummingbirds specifically but I love your videos and all your guitars!
Have a great week, see you on your next video!
+Edu Castillo thanks you for your kind words! Hearing things like that make all work to make the videos worthwhile- truly. Best to you Matt
Rule number 1 about guitars. The experts are usually full of crap--if you like the sound thats all that matters.
I have 2 70's Gibson acoustics-my SJ Deluxe is a great sounding guitar and was a steal
My Heritage is beautiful to look at but not as sweet sounding-it is very dry and focused so it is great for sloppier open tunings
I like Hummingbirds for recording but I prefer J45 and my 2003 J45 is probably my most played Gibson
I have a 2003 J-45 which is probably my fave sounding acoustic... it sounds better IMHO than my '57 J50 (which is no slouch either). I couldn't agree more with all you've said. Thanks for sharing you thoughts:)
Just sub'd your channel. I had a 68' Hummingbird I bought new back in the day, loved it except for the narrow nut. Traded it off in the early 2000's. I have a new one from the custom shop preorderd with koa back and sides!
It really shows how much effort you put into filming your videos. Well done!
Hey Carl thanks you for those comments - thanks for watching too. Best Matt.
Really nice mate, I have a hummingbird original in order atm in Sydney. Can’t wait to strum her. Best acoustics imo
Beautiful guitar! The only thing that I find rather peculiar are the inlays on the neck... Hummingbirds, Doves, Country And Westerns, Super Jumbos, use to have split pararellogram inlays. Yours have block inlays. Greetings from Santiago, Chile.
I have been considering getting a 70s hummingbird for a while now as they are dead cheap (im in australia as well). Did my research online (all of which said dont touch with a ten foot pole), then played a couple in stores which didnt blow me away. Sounds like you got really lucky there mate - congrats.
Hey there yes the 70's models are much cheaper and they don't get great wraps online. I've played some 70's Gibson acoustics which are awful and some which are great. I reckon keep playing them and you might pick a very sweet guitar cheaply eventually. My guitar is a 1970 model so it might have some of the 60's vibe before more stiffer bracing was placed on them later in the 70's. Not sure but even my luthier was impressed with it after the repair and he's not somebody to just say stuff like that. Thanks for watching and contributing! Matt.
That's a beauty mate 👍
gareth edwards thanks mate she's come up a treat... nice to hear from you 👍
Always enjoy your videos, good production value and interesting viewing. And a great collection of guitars too.
Thanks for the kind words cheers Matt.
Enjoy your videos and your playing. My dad has a 1962 Gibson Country and Western. Beautiful guitar , a lot like yours. Just curious, is that a Martin style bridge on your Hummingbird? Greetings from North Carolina.
Hey there thanks for the kind words. My Hummingbird was actually bought from a somebody on in NC. Sounds like your dad has a very very sweet guitar! Re. the Martin bridge I'm not sure (good question) my luthier said he had a good Rosewood replacement so I trusted him without checking what it was:) I'd love to visit NC someday - I love the USA!
Was that an armadillo? In Australia?
Hummingbirds aren't really my thing Matt but another first class and eminently watchable production. Thanks heaps :)
Cheers Matt thank you again for your support I really appreciate it! Out of curiosity what's your weapon of choice acoustic wise?
TONE My favorite acoustic guitars are any Morgan Monroe, or a good ol' Gibson J 200
Sweet nice choices!
You sound like that guy from The Church ? When you talk .
Haha really - I know Steve Kilbey - what a great musician he is:)
Great videos and gear man!
Thanks for the kind words Tyson - much appreciated! Cheers Matt.
Nothing beats a martin
I did cringe..throwing that guitar into the car.😑😁😆😂
Probably should have said placed gently into the car;)
What a great video and what a nice guitar, thanks for sharing!
My pleasure mate - thanks for the kind words! Nice to hear from you again:) Matt.
