Made any of these mistakes? Or got some other mistakes you think we should know about?
Was definitely guilty of every run had to be the fastest run ever when I first started out. Also buying ALL the gear, because I like to be over prepared for every possible situation. So much money wasted on stuff I never used. 😅
Great video. "Comparing to others" could be its own mistake, IMO. Some people probably aren't as susceptible, but I definitely can catch some feels looking at other people's stravas and then push an easy run too hard.
Totally agree with believing every run has to be amazing, which for me also is being too "data/numbers obsessed" (together with "expecting results too soon"). Early on, I would get mad if my garmin said "unproductive" or my V02 estimate stagnated. Now, I just enjoy the process and keep it moving.
Finally, prioritizing training, but not recovery. You allude to it in the "cooldown" section, but focusing on sleep, rest days, and being proactive about any early onset of injuries is key. I just ran through stuff back in the day and ended up injured unable to run for a few months.
I am guilty of not cross training. I hate the idea of doing other things, but it could include yoga, which I love, and some body weight exercises that I learned thanks to TRC during 2020.
"Doing every run at the same pace" - Guilty. 10 days ago i did an awesome 10k race, in 6 days i have another 10k and on my mind i'm just thinking to make at least the same time, even knowing that I committed excesses at Christmas and New Year (and the week in between =D )!
Go to the toilet before every run! the amount of times I've had a pb running home for a you know what is a joke 🤦🏽♂️
This video was like old friends having a catch up. Telling stories of how it all started. Great to see Anna and Rick back together. Just like the good ol days
Yeah, really great to have Rick back. Seems such a genuine bloke.
Did anybody else, clench a fist and whisper a "yes" when they saw Rick running. Great to see you back at it Rick 👍
Great to see Rick back running again after everything he has been through. Keep it going. All the best to everyone in 2023 with their running plans
I’ve definitely learnt so much about running from the running channel. So great to see Anna and Rick together in a video again. 😊
Really glad to hear that Suzy! Have you got any races planned next year?
@@runningchannel I got a garmin forerunner 55 for Christmas (after several hints!) so I have restarted running 5k with the training plans. I would like to do the Plymouth 5k in may and maybe the burrator 10k in June depending on how my training goes! 😁
me too x
I don't know if you'd call it a mistake, but thinking progress is linear and that you will see improvements week by week. When I first started running, I was around a 12:00 mile pace for 5 miles and got down to 10:00-10:30 within a month or so. But then I just stayed there for nearly half a year. Every time I tried to push it faster, my heartrate would skyrocket and I would exhaust myself.
I think it was the aerobic basebuilding (or lackof). Something eventually just clicked and I started making progress again.
totally agree. when you first start, gains come so quickly, then you really have to be patient and not expect the same rate of progress.
My two favourite Running Channel presenters! You two always leave me with a smile on my face. Looking forward to a video series leading up to Rick's first park run back from recovery.
Rick, you are running again?? That is great news. I was very glad to see that. Also, you left "hill work" off the "types of runs" list.
I've got a marathon this year. But been plaqued with injury and depression due to work. I am focussing on getting my mental state ready before my main running, by doing power walks early in morning. This has 2 benefits, 1 it gets you up and ready to go out and 2 it gets you to push yourself with pushing injuries.
Sounds like a brilliant plan Ralph! Your mental state is so important 💪 We really hope you start to feel better soon.
I listened to a book called "ultra mindset" and the first principle was "it's all good mental training", or put differently - mental training - "it's all good" (the mental training is staying positive and resilient, developing the attitude that it is all good). Definitely recommend the book.
Mental state is crucial, especially in things as intense as marathon training and racing. Good on ya, good luck staying injury free. Sorry about work, hopefully the walks and runs help give you a little respite from those stresses.
Yesss Anna and Rick together again ! Glad to see u guys 🎉🎉🎉
Rick is running?? That’s great news. Maybe another update video about his recovery. Congratulations Rick.
I love Anna and Rick together! So nice to have you for New Years freezing cold on a park bench, lol. Hope Rick's knee is much better.
Worth noting 10% rule is based your weekly mileage (not on each run!)
Yes! Sorry we didn't make that clearer, it's 10% every week 👍
RICK IS DOING STRIDES!!! Great to have you back and running again! Great video so far. Now watching the rest of the video (just want to give congratulations.) My mistake is definitely too much too soon but also wearing my first proper running trainers to death and therefore injury.
*not every run has to be amazing*
last week - 17.1 miles with hills - amazing!
today - 17.6 miles with NO hills - horrible. I stopped 11 times and nearly collapsed onto a park bench at the end.
Upped the pace and had less than 6 hours sleep which are the reasons why.
No regrets, but more something to learn is that those tough days where it's stop/start or you are having a painful time are the days you truly grow and get better.
Not all runs have to be amazing, but those that aren't might just be the most important ones you get done.
Yaaay, Anna and Rick!! Love the dynamic. So great to see Rick back at it!
My first marathon happened “by accident”. After months of running 3x10km a week I realized I wasn’t getting better (lots of beginner’s mistakes made like doing every run at the same pace); I really had no idea what I was doing. So to get more structure in my training I started a half marathon plan on Garmin; didn’t like it, moved to a marathon plan on Strava, loved it. Then at some point in the plan I realized I could actually run a marathon so I signed up for Amsterdam in 2021. The rest is history 😄
Yep, made all these mistakes. Loving the Anna and Rick team back together again. More please👍
Great to see Rick back running again. Great tips from you both, especially Anna's 'Watch the Running Channel' one. I also appreciated the synchronised runners in the background!
Definitely made some of these mistakes!
Soooo pleased to see Anna and Rick working together! The OG team 🙌🙌🙌
I think mine was just doing the same route over and over again. There’s so much more to running when you change the route. ❤
Because I watch running channel I know more about running, thanks Rick and Ana 👍
Glad to hear it Felix!
It is great to see Rick back!
So glad see you two! Anna and Rick good come back 2023
A couple of my earliest mistakes when I first started running were not having the proper running shoes and doing too much. Lesson quickly learned. Thanks to TRC for always having sound advice and fun videos to watch!
A very common mistake Wilson! Glad you're enjoying our videos 😁
Love you, guys!!! Love the running channel:D
Good video. Very informative, as always. Thank you.
Love the running channel! You really helped me get started again after a long break. Great mix of presenters, topics, challenges. Those mistakes sounded all too familiar as well!
Really glad you're enjoying our videos and finding them useful 😁 What would you like to see more of?
Rick, are you running again ? That’s so great !!! 🎉 So happy for you !
And it was such a great surprise to see this kind of video : I love all the kinds you do, but this type is really what made me love TRC and it’s great to start 2023 with it ! ❤
Really glad you enjoyed it Mathilde 😁
So good to see Rick. I hope you can run at last. You've been through so much. Will you do a video on the state of your return to active life?
Thanks both of you.
Those runs that don't work. Sometimes you learn from them. But you definitely learn it can't always go right. Liberating to accept that and the next run is usually fine. Or brilliant.
Great list. I would add, listen to your body when you are running. For example, I started feeling knee pains, and instead of pushing on, I rested and walked home.
Always very important to listen to your body! Does your knee feel better now?
@@runningchannel - Yes. After a few days, my knee pain was no more.
Absolutely love this channel.
Thanks! We love you too 😁
That thumb nail was me. Started off sprinting got gassed had no stamina or endurance. So glad I can go at least slow pace and much further now.
Happy New Year! I started running with C25k 3 years ago and it’s a great programme. Being patient with yourself is really important. Learning how to run slowly makes it more enjoyable for me and if you don’t enjoy something then you are less likely to do it again. The sentence, “no pain, no gain” is CRAP.
Rick running again ! so cool to see, well done.
Some great info to confirm I have learnt the hard way. Also nice to know I am sorted now after many years. Remember though not everyone needs to have a big running 'goal'. Some , like me have plodded for years. Only now at 50 I am beginning to be a tad more serious. Maybe tackle a greater distance. Good work guys. Thanks.
I think the biggest mistake is that people run too hard, coupled with a view that walking means you are a failure. Whether you are strategically run/walking for endurance, using it to keep HR down in an aerobic zone, or just gassed on a run and needing a walk -- take your time, enjoy the run, have fun. Be patient with the build up, and run most runs easy even if that means a slower pace than you think you should be running(incl. walking)
Couldn't agree more Taylor! Have you got any exciting things planned in 2023?
@@runningchannel I have a 24 hour race up and down a mountain in February. Trying to run my first 100 miler in fall, and a few races sprinkled in between. Got to mountainous 100k last year and want to bump up the distance. Loved your running home for Christmas 100 miler, by the way!
Looks like Rick is stepping up his game again. Very nice to see. That was really humorous.
Thank you for these tips!
I would add that you don't have to overwhelm yourself with all the types of runs especially when you're just starting to get used to being a runner and just regularly going out for a run.
Great advice! Such a commonly made mistake and it can lead to feeling overwhelmed and giving up quickly
Number 9 is very true because it will keep you motivated 😊. Thanks guys.
You guys are all awesome but I do have a fave and it’s Amy, she’s like the running bestie who gets real w you but makes you laugh through it, love her!!
Just get started! Yeahhhh
love the jackets xvery good video
My advice for running goals if you start to do a certain race (marathon, half marathon, etc)
Don't make running the race your primary goal, make forming the habits your goal, so that you don't feel unmotivated to continue after you finish the race. Anyone within reason can run a marathon, the thing that sets you apart and makes you special is if you manage to make running a habit that you continue whether you are training for something or not. If you need a marathon to springboard you into changing your lifestyle then go for it but have a plan for after the marathon! (Obviously I'm not trying to downplay what an amazing achievement a marathon is)
Maybe add in some more speed workouts and try to use your amazing aerobic engine you've built up to get some easy 1 mile, 5k, 10k, half marathon personal bests. A personal best feels amazing at any distance and a few weeks after a marathon is a perfect time to really get into it. And it helps reinforce the mindset that you are a runner now, and the importance of process goals over output goals. Remember to keep doing the long run though! It's the most important run no matter what distance you train at, even 1 mile athletes still do 10-15 mile long runs.
Really great video. Last one is the best, of course. 😁😁
Hahaha we agree Liam! 😁
Love! Getting back into running after a bit of a hiatus, and running a marathon in June with friends! Sending them your videos so they can get all the great advice, too 😉
Glad you're finding them helpful Krista! Which marathon are you running?
@@runningchannel I'm running Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, USA!
Always a good reminder. I still do many of these things even though I know better.
Thank you, guys, for motivating us and sharing all that knowledge with us. My 2023 personal goal is to achieve a sub-3:30 Marathon time. Lets share our goals for this year
Happy New Years TRC. Good to see an old school type of video back when the channel started! May I ask where Kate has been? Everything okay with her? Hope to see her soon
Oh my days you are at my park. Probably the best park in London. Victoria Park!!! Finsbury Park is also a legendary park and the running channel has also been there. You really know where the real running action is at.
I used couch to 5k when I started and Michael Johnson is great to listen to 👍
Regarding the Marathon: You guys made it sound like it is reasonable to do a marathon after 16 weeks of training. Well, this is possible for people with a strong background in sports like soccer, cycling etc, I would say give yourself at least to 2-3 years time before doing a marathon if you are an absolute beginner. Love watching your videos, greeting from Germany
I did 16 weeks before my first marathon with no previous running. But agree , you need to do other things like cycling, swimming, yoga or circuit training ( which was mine), this will help strengthen your upper body.
It's all very individual, and there's no harm giving yourself more time if you are a complete beginner 😊 The main thing is to listen to your body 💪
I agree. I've been running for 4 years before that I was smoking and eating too much bad food. I think that it might be another 4 years before I would take on a marathon. I'm 55 and I've done three half marathons in around 3h each.
Sadly i think many people will miss out on wonderful experiences if waiting until everything is "perfect". 2-3 years is a very long time to wait, especially if they just want the incredible experience of finishing. I don't think couch to marathon in 12 weeks is the best way to go, but I did couch to 50k in 7 months in 2020 with no problem, finished injury free, had a blast, and such a feeling of pride, and opened the door to many wonderful adventures and new friends- things I would still be waiting for if I'd waited 2-3 years.
Love how you all out this information simple. I have done a few of these myself. Great information to give beginners. And to remind those that have been running for a while thank you
Really glad you enjoyed it Kathy 😁 Can you think of any we might have missed?
@@runningchannel the unexpected interruption of the..... Gut should I say on a long run with nowhere to relieve yourself. For a first time runner .... Quit embarrassing. Then the ....body does release gas sometimes when running as well. Lol. It happens
Don't assume that your training plan will always go smoothly either, listen to your body and don't be afraid to add a few extra rest sessions in to the mix if you're feeling burnt out or are injured; a good training plan is one that can be adjusted.
That DOMs. I went for a run a couple of weeks ago. Only 20 minutes but my first run of 2022 - I could barely walk down stairs for three days afterwards 🤣
😂😂 They can really hit you that first run!
Yay love Anna and Rick
I’m guilty of a few of these, I haven’t been running long and want to do the LLHM this year. Literally in the first day of 12 week training I’ve hurt my hip. I was meant to do a 5k but felt good and thought I’d try my first 10k. I did it and felt great but the next day realised my body wasn’t ready. I’m still not running after a week and keeping the weight off my hip. At least I’ve had time to watch your videos to get inspired and avoid the mistakes in the future.
Great video. I've posted recently about mistake #8 - it's that time of year where I get a lot of clients saying "I've got a marathon place in four months and want to start running, can you make me a plan?". No! Want to get into running? Great! Want to run a marathon one day? Great! But they're not the same thing. I take issue with the phrase "anyone can run a marathon" - they can, *if* they've got into a good running habit and done the miles, regardless of pace. I respect people who run 6-7 hour marathons but I don't like it when people say they don't need to train because they'll "just do it slowly" - Kipchoge never ran a 6 hour run, and it's a brutal length of time to spend on your feet. A 6hr marathon takes more training than a 3hr marathon, not less. Lots of slower runners put a huge effort into their training and have a good experience of their marathon, a lot of faster runners think they can wing it and get into trouble. Running a marathon is like climbing Everest - it's a great achievement but dangerous if you're unprepared. One step at a time!
One step at a time is the perfect summary! There's no need to rush 😁👍
I fear I am guilty in almost every point😂. Good summary for newbies, we all shall take that serious
Don't run too late at night. For me, never start a run after 21:00 otherwise forget about having a good night sleep..
That's a really good point, sometimes the endorphins can prevent good quality sleep
no3 great to know this !
so true, my post xmas run was the worst ever,, was eating bad, had the flu b4
Great video with great tips.
An important one to add: choose the right clothes for the right session and circumstances.
If you are to hot/cold or wet/dry during a session it will demotivate you very fast.
Also important: drinking and eating the right things at the right time.
You will regret it if you eat/drink (too much) too close to a session or eat things that will cause gas.
This will also demotivate you a lot.
Great tips Bart! What do you like to eat before a session?
@@runningchannel Depends on the session and what kind of fuel the pace and distance uses. Races: Pasta and lots of water the evening before, lots of "sugar" in the morning and no more food from 3 hours before and depending on the length 1 Maurten gel 10 minutes before the start. Fast training sessions: no more food 2 hours before and lots of "sugar" at breakfast and lunch and no food that causes gas (like cauliflower). Slow and long runs: no more food 1,5 hours before, less "sugar" and more "fat" and I will eat like 25% more. After races and fast sessions: always cheese cake or other foods with lots of proteins shortly after the session for good and faster recovery with less "pain" and less fatigue.
You can have a lot of influence on how a session goes and feels (also afterwards) by eating and drinking the right things at the right time.
Not rushing my first marathon paid off I think :). I still did too much too soon of course. :)
We're all guilty of that one, you're definitely not alone 😅
If you're in shape and coming to running from another sport, don't change too much too soon. I went from playing soccer (football for the Brits ;) ) year round to training for a running race and almost immediately got an injury because all at once, I changed my shoes (soccer cleats/football boots don't have a heel to toe drop like traditional running shoes), the running surface (lots more concrete because I didn't have easy access to trails), and the incline (we didn't run medium to long hills in soccer/football). Gradually change one thing at a time and give your body time to adapt to it before making another change.
I really like, that the bike is an old steel road bike, that can be found in the back of anyone grandparents garage, or bought really cheap, and not an all singing dancing carbon fiber wonder of modern technology. cycling can sometimes seem, that in order to start, you need the latest and greatest, when in reality unless you're at the pointy end of a race, it just does not matter that much.
The only people who will actually care about your running are the ones who want to support you and you'll care about 10x more than anyone else. Go run, don't go so fast you don't enjoy it, you'll improve but it might take a few weeks/months and good luck! 🎉
YAY RICKS BACK!!!!!!
Rickkkkkk is back yay!!!!!
I have started "running" so many times. This time last year I started and after about 4 weeks and maybe 10 or 12 runs I managed to get up to running 5k in about 31 mins, but I found it so hard, heart rate at max and chest, legs burning, pouring with sweat, it was not a pleasant experience... every run seemed like a huge really hard effort and it was far too easy to skip and then lose interest, so this has video been really useful. I think I was trying too much too soon, i had this target of 5k in 30 mins in mind and all I did was try and do that and inevitably failed, so this year I might try and take it slower, more variation, try that couch to 5k app and then move on from there... I still can't even see myself being able to run for more than 5k without sky rocketing my heart rate and smashing my legs
Something similar happened to me years ago and I stopped running. But I've found that doing treadmill and shooting for X time (e.g. 50 minutes) at Y Heart Rate (e.g. around 180bpm) relieves a lot of that pressure when doing set distances, and you get to know your body better as well
Wait! What? Rick! 🎉🤗
Heeeeee's back! 🥳
Doing a couch to marathon myself 😅 but don't worry, it's a 40-week plan starting with c25k and even incorporating consolidation periods
That's great Mo! How are you finding it so far? Let us know how you get on 😁
@@runningchannel best decision of my life tbh. Running is amazing
The wrap around glasses do keep the sweat out of your eyes … that’s what I tell myself 😅
I love DOMS - they're proof that what I did worked :)
One: did not make it - not rich enough, started running in my tennis gear which is not a great idea either. Two: not done until year two and saw it coming. Three: No problem with this one as I was trying to adjust my daughters plan paces to my own capabilities but only real got it in year 3 (now). I have a particular take on this one. I think the various paces take experience to experience and even more experience to master. I am not there yet. Four: nope. Got average advice first and then very good one for pair number two in a small boutique shop. Five: agree and did it: in my experience tennis matches are NOT cross training and make matters worse. Six: Past 50 as a new runner, warming up happens naturally, otherwise the run does not but the injury does. Seven: Good services and bad services days in tennis - that one applies in every discipline, including barrister (which I am not so it happens even more to me making an espresso). Eight: Marathon? I might head for a half in year three (2023), but only if I can fit it in and increase an already decent mileage and only because I had long runs close and felt I could go on. Nine? Subscribed - problem solved ;-)
I'm still a rookie, but the best way to control speed is by using a running watch to build programs that set minimum and maximum speeds.
My tips would be first: to take every negative thought, word phrase and emotion to the nearest dustbin and imagine throwing them all in the bin, walking away and forgetting them. Negativity just acts as an anchor to hold you back and amplify that naughty negative inner voice that wants you to stop running and loves to tell you "see I told you you couldn't do that".
Another tip is to realise no run is ever a failure. In truth there are only two possible outcomes. Either we win when the run goes well or we learn something that will help us win next time when it doesn't go to plan.
Still do the same mistakes :-)
any tips for bringing down moving heart rate? i do 5ks and my heart rate increases as the run goes on
My mistakes were running every race at PB-pace and running a half-marathon with no prep at all. I made it but my legs almost killed me afterwards. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.😅
Wow that's tough! Preparation is always key 😅
Zappos, in the US has free shipping noth ways.
Feels good to be at the top
👏👏👏
im half a size up also in running shoes
Good shoes is an important one, but its also worth noting that super shoes aren't a great first running shoe. The allure of going faster has a huge durability tradeoff, and most of the benefit requires you to be moving at a good pace.
Couldn't agree more Nick! What do you like to run in?
@@runningchannel I bounce between Saucony Kinvara for short runs, Speed 2's for tempo runs, and Asics Nimbus for long runs. If I could only have 1 shoe, it'd be the Nimbus, but the Speed 2 is close.
I make some of these mistakes even now cos I'm a lunatic
😂😂😂
Do you guys have any private training or coatching?
Some member of the TRC team have running coaches from time to time, but most of us use training plans 😊 Do you use a private coach?
My thing was warning up n cooling down, after 5 gears I still find it hard
10% week over week, not 10% day over day.
Yes 10% every week 😊 W
I am curious how your knee cartilage situation worked out?
You'll be getting an update very soon! 😁
Painful feet! I bought a pair online, got great recommendations. But on my feet - no good. Too narrow for me, so painful. They had to go back.
Sorry to hear that, what do you run in now?
@@runningchannel New Balance Fresh Foam 880 and Brooks Hyperion. Roomy shoes!
Should’ve watched this video 6weeks ago… due to wrong shoes and eagerness I now have shinsplints🤦🏿♂️
Oh no! Sorry to hear that 😣 How's your recovery going?
@@runningchannel Well, a lot of icing, ankle and tibia strengthening exercises and a lot of rest. Since my feet are flat as a pancake and I overpronate a bit I bought some stability shoes (Mizuno Wave Inspire18, Kalenji KD500 and Asics Trabuco10) as well as a pair of Noosa Tri14 (that design is just 😍). The pain in my shins has been reducing by the week, so much so that I think I am almost fit to start running again. Though I find it hard to decide when it is wise to start running again, but 1 thing I do know: When I do restart I won’t take shortcuts anymore, I will do a 8week couch to 5K program WITH restdays every other day.
TLDR: I am getting there.
a ballot place in the marathon?
Running shoe sizes. My experience: running shoes are *the same but different* sizes with different brands! Also an extreme f'rinstance: 2 pairs of Asics, same *type* alleged same size.... totally (totally) differently sized ie 1 pair = 1 or even 2 sizes too small! Why? Noticed they were manufactured in different countries: surely Asics would have tight controls on that... hey, ho!
I now use the European sizes which are more accurate for sizing (in my experience) 47 (tho... sometimes 46ish...or not! ) 🤔
Mistakes? None, ever.... I'm perfect in all respects when it comes to running! 😁🤔
End of year = statistics (hurrah!)

amy tips for not napping after every run lol
Haha it's normal to feel tired as first, how long are your runs at the moment?
@@runningchannel just 5ks :( started running in june
all the runners in the back
10% more each week not each run right?
Yes each week 😊👍
If you ain't chasing Strava Kom's on eath run then u ain't even trying
😂😂
Another alternative to buying two different sizes then returning them, would be going to a shop and trying on the shoe/ brand of shoe to get the right size before ordering them online
Going into a shop to try your shoes on is always better when it comes to running shoes 😊
Stopped after 'decent supportive shoes'
Stopped watching to go buy a pair you mean? 😂
How come Mark?
@@livewire1957239 I don't need to add to the shoe collection right now
