- Learn how to pronounce the four tones in Mandarin Chinese as well as the neutral tone.
In Chinese the tone used when pronouncing a word will change its meaning. In order to be able to properly speak and understand Mandarin, you need to understand the tones.
The four tones in Mandarin are:
- The first tone, the high level tone.
- The second tone - the rising tone
- The third tone - the falling rising tone, and
- The fourth tone - the falling tone.

u don't just learn Mandarin, you also practice your singing skills
I literally lost my voice from learning this! 🤣
The muscles ain't used to exercise with all these different tones. Lol
I find that this is good exercise for your throat before singing.
😂
Tones are not the same as singing. Practically all of us speak with tones, even for non-tonal languages. Unless, of course, you speak like a monotonous robot.
She already demonstrated those instances in English with similar sounding tones.
@@huaiwei don't take it so seriously it's just some kind of jokes bruh

The hand movements really help, this is a great lesson. They all are ... thanks!
Thank you so much Cam!
me too
Me like this too when I learn to pronounce the pinyin...my hand move automatically hahaha...but I find it helps for me to memorize the different tones...I'm still in the beginning / basic of learning Mandarin...
I agree. Just a small suggestion. It would be great if you do the pronunciation and the hand gesture at the same time. In this video, you start the pronunciation at the end of the gesture.
She really have sense of teaching
This video is excellent.
It is so hard to learn tonal languages for westerners. Breaking it down and comparing tones to colloquial English expressions is inspired.
Thanks!
I'm happy that you enjoyed my lesson and find it useful. Thank you.
Not only western , but easter too
Its really are difficult but not impossible!
@@pedroferraz7412 it's really difficult but possible!

I’ve been struggling with this for a while! It was a really good idea to compare it to english words - “what” for 2nd tone, “well” for 3rd tone, and “stop” for 4th tone. I had heard of questions=rising tone, but this was the first I’ve heard of the tricks for the others!
She's so cute, her cuteness encourages me to learn Chinese.
Thank you Rivalz! Happy learning!

Thats true
I just never got the answer on one thing about tonal languages, like mandarin.
If it's so dependent on tones for the meaning of words, how do they manage it in songs? Do they have to pick words whose tones will fit the melody of the song, or tones are just ignored and you have to be supposing which is the word intended?
That's the exact reason why k-pop and related has fast-paced lyrics, to allow the tone to be correct
Music in tonal languages usually do not extend to much the words, but uses more the melody and the space between the words
@@sghasas Korean is not tonal language
@@user-ij7qf8me1e ooops
Subject to the melody of the song, but most of the words are correctly pronounced in Chinese. I don't know if it was deliberately considered when writing the lyrics or by coincidence.

You know...this is going so much easy for me. I'm a Yoruba from Nigeria and our language is also tonal. Maybe that's why I feel so connected to China
This lazy is a really good teacher. I like the way she takes her time to explain and pronounce the words. I'm really enjoying this!😊
I could never pronounce correctly 2nd and 3rd tones, I really heard almost no difference and therefore I couldn't pronounce them differently.... till I saw this video. Thank you.
I was studying French, I don't know how but I am here and looking at this right now.
I have seen many videos insisting that the tones are really easy - if they were easy - we (foreigners) wouldnt find them so difficult and keep making mistakes !!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP !! Much appreciated. This is one of the best "chinese tone" videos around.
This lady is an amazing teacher. I never thought I wanted to learn Mandarin but she makes it so engaging and easy.
One of my friend , challenged me to learn Chinese
I hope I'll learn it
You are such a nice tutor
Thank you so much! Best wishes with your studies!
I’m a complete beginner in Mandarin. The reason I want to learn is because I’m part Chinese but I did not grow up in China. I think it’s a beautiful language. This is really helpful! Thanks
That's great!
The tones are the most difficult part in learning Chinese. The grammar is easy compared to most languages
I'm a beginner in korean, so maybe that's why this was sugested to me. I watched it out of curiosity and although chinese is such an intimidating language, your way of explaining is so easy to understand. You have a gift. Maybe I'll give chinese a try in a few years because I really want to learn as many languages as I can, but I like taking things slow. As a native spanish speaker, it has always fascinated me the complexity of the chinese language. Loved the video!
Gracias!
Are you still learning 😊?
You are an EXTRAORDINARY TEACHER ! Pls don't stop teaching us ! Thanks !
Thank you Ramona! I will keep making new lessons!
This video helped me to finally comprehend the tones with which Ive been struggling very much... Thank you so much excellent video!!!
You are very welcome! I'm so happy to hear that the lesson was helpful!
I think this video gives everyone hope that that can in fact learn Chinese. I never thought I would be able to learn Chinese mainly because I never understood the tones and how they're pronunced but after this video I'm amazed at how well you're able to explain the different tones to English speakers. Well done 👍
Obviously it will take a very long time with practice and patience to learn but it's still more achievable than I thought!
Thank you so much for your comment Skye! Happy learning!
I just transferred to a Chinese-Buddhist school and one of the subjects we need to study is Chinese Mandarin, I’ve been having a hard time pronouncing Chinese words because of their puzzling tones. Now I’m practicing through YT tutorials, and this is very helpful.

This is perfect, I actually study Mandarin for almost 6 years in school (it's also a subject in school) but I still struggle with the tiniest things like making simple sentence or pronouncing words. This is definitely the best series I've found. Great job and thank you so much!!
Wow, thank you! Happy learning!
This is an extremely clear and succinct video. Great instruction, and particularly helpful in comparing the tones to how certain English words are said. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you very much!
The reference to English words is very helpful, IMO. For the neutral tone I think of it like Morse Code. The long tone and the neutral (shorter) tone. That's the mnemonic I'm using for now. Thanks for such clear, distinctive vocalizations, it helps to understand the subtleties, to me.
This is definitely the best pedagogical method I've seen. And the teacher is great!
I find chinese very easy. People find it difficult bevause of its alphabets and I personally find saying the tones quickly difficult. But this video helped me a lot. It changed my perspective towards Chinese.

I am learning and have been watching a lot of interviews where chines was used. And it’s interesting to see that native speakers still mess up the tones, and these double meanings sometimes trip them up. We as learners worry so much about tone, while native speakers are also making mistakes when they speak because of the tones.
