Rediscover the joy of biking with Jason Gainey // Never Grow Up

  • Often in life, simplicity is something we grow out of. Filling the day-to-day with an ever-expanding list of things that consume our time, leaving us with choices made that are viewed in the rearview mirror. A youthful innocence lost in a complex world with many distractions. Few find themselves able to break away. Jason Gainey was introduced to biking at a formative age, where riding and carelessness weren’t lost to the thoughts of tomorrow. Forming a connection to be tested, Jason found himself walking away from the sport he grew up loving. A realization and reflection on the simplicity of what makes Jason, Jason, led to the rediscovery of that joy biking gave him in those younger years. After over forty years since he first felt that feeling, the passion continues to motivate Jason. His days are now filled with riding, racing, coaching, and more riding; maybe he is just a kid who never grew up.

Wow. This is SO my life. 80s BMX freestyle. I lived to ride. After college I stopped riding and was fully committed to my career for 7 or 8 years. Started collecting old bikes, thinking I really couldn't (or maybe shouldn't) ride anymore. But when I found out I was still able, it became my love again. Then once I discovered mountain biking, it like when I was a teenager into BMX. And now, almost 53, riding is my passion again, like it was when I was 17. Great video. It really hits home.

I once had a girlfriend who pulled the "What could be so damn special about two wheels and a frame!?"
In an argument about me biking a lot.
Needless to say she lived happily ever after with someone else, and I did too, A FULL CARBON ENDURO RACE RIG BRO
Ok not really, I did marry a human but this one understands the magic of biking. 😇

"The joy of friendship.......the joy of play". Being N of 50 and back into MTB from a long break, this nails it. Jason is a solid piece of a special little community that I sure love to spend time with.

I just got into mountain biking and I’m loving it. The progression you get is rewarding and you’re always learning something new. Your mind is clear when riding trails and you seek adventure. Knowing you have a bike in the garage definitely keeps you happy and sane. We all grew up riding bikes and I’m much happier now that I have one again. Love the video!! 🚲🚲🚲

This is motivational. I too fell into the "you have to do this" spiral and this last year I have been truly unhappy. I live in a place that I moved to for riding and have a bike in the garage. I have been dealing with injuries but also the stress of my new job. Reflecting on myself and what I want from my life this past year, I decided to quit my job. I don't know what I am going to do or even what I want in a job but I am just going to figure it out. I know I want to enjoy life again and be happy for myself to be the best version of myself for my family.

THIS!! Absolutely all of this. The content of this video echos me so much. I couldn’t stay off my bike as a kid. I went everywhere as kid on my bike. Total freedom. And life took over and I lost touch with biking for years during college and early adult years. In my mid 30’s, age was creeping in, metabolism was slowing down, and there was a simple freedom I missed in the day-to-day of life. I bought nice mountain bike. I was rehooked! Like you mentioned, I wasn’t going to let anyone else creep in and say I have to grow up. Now in my 40’s, I’m in the best shape of my life. Lost about 40 pounds and feel mentally and physically strong. I bike in all 4 seasons. I have a garage full of bikes worth more than my car which found itself now demoted to the driveway to park. Get a bike (or bikes) in the garage. They change your life.

I used to ride my bike all over with my best friend growing up. This year, at 34 years old, I bought my first mountain bike. Despite being pretty out of shape and many crashes trying to push my limits. I haven't had this much fun and sense of joy in I dont know how long. Interesting enough, one of the influences to get a bike was a 72 year old Vietnam vet I met at the gym, in a way, I think he knew I needed something

Man like so many other people that commented this echos very strong for me. Never was competitive but me and my friends would ride all over our town in the summer hitting all the dirt jump spots, and then I quit when I joined the service. A few years after I was out, with a 20yr break and married I picked it back up at 39. It's been 3 years and love it just as much now as I did when I was 17.

I turned 50 this year. Been riding bikes for 45 years. Now i’m teaching my 8 year old daughter to mtn bike and it’s really gratifying. The low points of my life were when I didn’t have a physical outlet, be it biking or surfing. I once asked my 75 year old surf buddy what his secret was. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “it’s easy! DON’T SLOW DOWN!” 🤙

Jason's a fantastic coach. I started MTB well in my 40's and Jason (as well as the rest of the Fluidride team) helped me immensely in my progression as I was getting started in my transition from road riding. I hope to arrange a personal session with Jason in the future, pretty sure he can make me safer, faster and find more smiles on any trail.

Very similar parallels, I started riding bicycles when I was probably five or six I just turned 61 last and I ride my 29-in mountain bikes almost daily, I've had a dog for about five and a half years and she runs on a leash with on the bicycle wheel of life and we enjoy life together....... She gets so excited when we get to run together on the bicycle she jumps up and down grab the leash in her mouth like she's pulling me!!! I feel like I'm fourteen years old again every time I ride my if I ride every day then I will be riding when I die....❤️🌹💯

I'm 58 and this is still pretty much all I do. I ride wheelies down Main Street and it's amazing how many people cheer me on because you can tell I'm not a youngster. Going downhill I'm always catching up on little kids and just smoking their ass! When I'm riding my budget motorcycle all the young hot shots pass me up on the straightaways but when the corners get narrow and sharp and technical lookout because here I come!

Riding my bike again saved my life. About a year ago my wife’s car broke down and while she was using my truck I got my old bike from my parents garage to ride to work. After about a month that 25yr old bike was really struggling because it had never been maintained at all. So I bought a new bike and while researching for that purchase I found the berm peak channel. Watching a guy like Seth who is so passionate about mountain biking and how he shares that with others really got me going, once I got my new bike, a used trek marlin 5 that was already kinda modded out to fit a 6’6” rider, and I was riding everyday I started to remember how fun it was as a kid to just ride and be free. I wasn’t stressed out on my way to work because of traffic and bad drivers. I just rode and enjoyed my 40 minutes of peace. That experience really helped bring me out of a very rough time in my life. I don’t have to ride to work anymore but it’s nice to know I can go out and ride whenever I want now.

Great video. People that say you're too old to bike don't know the joy biking provides. And that is the greatest tragedy; never knowing the joy that two wheels can bring you. That will never change no matter what year it is or how old you are.
If you can ride at 80 like you did at 25 or 35 you are a rare breed, if you really want that to be a reality the key is don't stop! Don't get complacent, keep striving for improvement. The body is highly adaptive to the environment, if trained properly you will be unstoppable.

+1 for the Volvo, clearly a man of taste - only thing I take issue with is ignoring your knees - listen to them when they give you pain, they're telling you something! Thanks! The video touched me very much. I recently turned 50 and the mountain bike has been my loyal companion since my teenage. We had made trails and jumps into the forest and always had a great time. At that time there were very few bike parks and so we were already "freeriders". Then there was a career and my offspring and the bike was hardly moved.
The E MTB had been triggering me for a long time, but only for a short time I have had a DH/FR Freeride Ebike and I enjoy the time in the mountains and the forest so much. I also notice how I always get fitter.
What is best, my daughter accompanies me very often and we have a great time together
