Stupid console wars! The PlayStation and N64 were both winners. During no other generation was there such a diverse and awesome take on gaming by two very different companies, with boat loads of great games on both sides. Lots of pride in this generation.
+Phantom1op But during this 5th gen was an explosion of all types of games, mostly from the PS side along with Nintendo's well known properties. The Saturn's early demise probably was a huge factor as well. Otherwise the Saturn would've shared games with PS, I theorize.
White Knight 5 maybe, but we have to admit that at least it is still remembered by Sega's fans unlike the Jaguar (which is sad because i actually kind of like the Jaguar) which is only really remembered because of the AVGN review.
+Phantom1op I'd argue the Saturn was a better console, hardware wise. But that's another story. I remember the Jaguar. Not too fondly since my buddy only had two games with it: Zool and some 3D flight game. I fondly remember the 32X add on for the Genesis.
It was very unfair to give the point to the Playstation for 'Innovative Features'. The N64 introduced the rumble pack, joystick, Expansion pack, Microphone and the Gameboy transfer pack. You gave one example about how the Playstation used CDs instead of cartridges but the Saturn and Sega CD were doing that before the Playstation was. It was hardly 'innovation'
finsfan90 All companies inspire each other (Sony's Eye toy came out years before the Wii/360 Kinect), which is fine. But you can't claim 'innovation' if you've basically done something another company has already done

I remember that I wanted N64 instead but my parents told me that we were getting PS1 instead( I thought that was a total bummer) cause I think they said it was cheaper? Idk but I fell in love with it anyway and I still own the PS2 and a PS3.

I bought both at the time. But exchanged my ps1 for a Japanese import n64 as soon as available. Sold it when years flew by, but the nostalgia kicked in and today I own 5 n64 models and 3 ps1's.. And a lot more other consoles, accessories and games. Things I couldn't buy at the time or for other reasons. I like the n64 a bit more, because of the cartridges and more fun gameplay. No loading times and way more reliable hardware. Also the controller of the n64 suits me more.

OMG this is the BEST controller ever! to this day maybe apart from the Wii it was such a leap forward. loved both consoles and owned both consoles. I think it's because the N64s format inhibited the console, put constraints on its ability. Nintendo were still in the 80s, using cartridge based technology, while all the other competitors were upgrading to cd. Graphics were superior on the n64 but they suffered from ghosting fog, pop up and soundtracks were limited. The PS1 indeed won the console war and had a 10 year reign -although this was mostly down to clever marketting, competative pricing, a great software catalogue and a superior storage format.

I believe Saturn and Playstation were roughly equal when all's said and done, but I don't remember the exact specs, so don't quote me on that. There was a nice article on this exact topic, comparing the three consoles (as well as a few others, I believe) somewhere on the web, but I can't remember where for the life of me; I saw it a long time ago and never bookmarked it.
+CAX 117 powerful doest mean better games. Same as 3ds and vita. By the look of it, nintendo will create a powerfull game using the NX but i think ps4 and xbone will remain.

i remember being taken to the store to buy a ps1 when i was 7 years old. its 1 of the best memories ever . i got resident evil 2 and the tryhard worker tried to talk my dad out of it lmao. called my best friend over and we played ps1 the entire night and didnt go to sleep until 6am haha..then christmas came around and my mom got me and my bro a n64 cuz hes a couple years younger than me and she wanted us to have more kid friendly games but 007 was one of the games we got 1st🤣🤣👍👍.

I remember being presented with this choice when they first came out. My sister said, "Get a PlayStation", my friend at the time said, "Get a Nintendo 64". After playing Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Tekken, I went with the PlayStation. I'm glad I did. Still, my friend had the Nintendo 64 and I did have fun with that too. But I'd still go with PlayStation.

+vickg9218 hey, I'm not dissing Nintendo 64. I played Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie and Zelda. They were all awesome. I was just at that age where I played Oddworld, Tekken, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider and preferred the maturer stuff. Both consoles were amazing.

+randumo24 actually the Saturn was a great system, it was best at Capcom 2D fighters. I used play my neighbor everyday with all the Capcom Saturn ports and they where head and shoulders better than the Sony versions.
PS1 takes this easily. It had a lot more variety of games that were incredible. It was a combination of quality AND quantity with solid, classic titles like Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3, Spider-Man, the SmackDown! games, Colony Wars (a fantastic yet criminally underrated game), Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk, Final Fantasy 7 etc, Chrono Cross and so on.. N64 had some good titles too, specifically the Mario games, Conker's Bad Fur Day and WWF No Mercy, the Rare games, but they weren't all that big in the library and couldn't beat the PS1 games IMO.
***** The PS1 does that shaky thing because the PS1 builds its game graphics using a thing called Integer-Based Arithmetic meaning not every 3D graphic angle could be made so to make up for it, it would "shake".
Nintendo should've stuck to the numbering system of the N64, calling their next console N65 and so on. By today their newest console would be called the Nintendo 69.
Yeah, the first time I held a Nintendo 64 controller I felt it was a perfect fit for the games you played on it. Everything clicked. I had no problem picking up and playing Super Mario 64, Goldeneye or anything else right off the bat. Granted the Gamecube controller was a better design later on.
4:19 The DualShock was actually not the first PS1 controller to have the 2 analog sticks. The more obscure (but still 1st party) Dual-analog was actually the first to do so, predating the DualShock by about a year or 2
They're both GREAT consoles with amazing games all around! :) I found myself replaying a lot of PS1 games, some from my childhood, and some that I've never played before and they really got me hooked in for hours on end. Especially Silent Hill and Colony Wars. N64's Smash Bros. is still sick! come on guys, stop the hate and just enjoy all the memories they've both given us. We're all winners here.

I can see that, my income as a young teen was just not high enough income for a PC. Worked all summer just for a playstation. 60$ a week was rough lol.
I was fortunate to have both growing up. Being around 14-15 when they came out I honestly remember the n64 being more impressive. And without a doubt it holds up better over time. I still to this day have buddies over and we play some GoldenEye and Mario kart. With some adult beverages of course haha. So if I had to pick 1, the n64 is superior.
just a note; Resident Evil was not a PlayStation exclusive, it was released on the Saturn too. Tomb Raider was actually released on the Saturn first, about a week ahead of the PlayStation, in the UK at least.
budal15 The PlayStation was popular and lots of people remember these games from playing them there,... but that's not invalidating my point. Even the first two WipeOut games weren't PlayStation exclusives, the series only becoming exclusive to Sony when they bought the developer, Psygnosis.
Yes, there was actually a time when Nintendo had the most powerful console on the market as far as hardware goes. They had the lead in that area until the Sega Dreamcast launched. Odd considering that now Nintendo is known for always having the least powerful hardware compared to Sony and Microsoft's consoles.
N64 was never more powerful overall than ps1. Ps1 had fmv, and actually had one of if not the best soundchip in its generation. The n64 literally is a step back from the snes since n64 literally had no dedicated soundchip. Storage space sucked on n64 and ran cartridges. Ps1 ran cds and played movies known as vcds. Only thing the n64 had over ps1 was more controller ports, less loading times, and had better looking true 3d games i would say. Overall ps1 was graphically more well rounded and had better hardware features. Plus the controller was better too since it literally has the blueprint that has been followed up to the ps5 with obvious improvements since the ps1.
@@angrymobsters1599 By raw specs the N64 was more powerful than the PS1. The N64 CPU was a lot faster that the PS1 CPU (93 MHz vs. 33 MHz) which is almost triple the speed, and the N64 also had double the amount of RAM as the PS1 (4 MB vs. 2 MB). Also, the N64 GPU was capable of trilinear filtering which the PS1 could not do. There were some things the PS1 did better, but overall the N64 had the more powerful hardware.

@@robertsrt True. Nintendo staying with the cartridge format rather then embracing the CD-ROM was a mistake. That was a pretty big bottleneck for the N64 and prevented developers from taking full advantage of the full hardware capabilities. But I still think games looked better overall on the N64 over the PS1 even with that limitation.
I would have disagreed based on Ocarina of Time being one of my number one games of all time. But... It was included on the Gamecube version of The Wind Waker making the Gamecube the console that I actually played it all the way through on. We also had Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin on GC so... you do have point.
The major problem of the n64 was the use of cartridges, the big limitation was responsible for the fact that we never saw the maximum power of the n64's hardware
ELVISFX there is nothing wrong with carts in fact I like them better and I'll tell you why. Carts load faster,disks are easy to destroy regardless of you being an adult or kid,they last waaaaaayyy longer,in my opinion they look cooler, and disks glitch more.
Wouldn't it have been possible for them to make a system that used multiple cartridges at the same time? That would have been smart. Even the game cases could have been designed so that they didn't take up so much space.
N64 was so much more revolutionary. It introduced a joystick on the controller, rumble pak, demonstrated how to properly translate a 2D game into a 3D game(Super mario 64), and gave us 4 player split screen
@@sonicman9910 Besides using discs which provide more storage the PS1 was inferior in all technical ways to the N64. The N64 was released 2 years after the PS1 so it was in fact the stronger console.

When I was little my mom made me choose what system I was going to stick with, The PS1 or the N64 I chose the PS1 and I never regretted that decision since, That was in 1995 and today I still have my original grey PS1 with all my games in mint condition

PS1 is a clear winner in my heart because that was my first gaming system that is high tech and innovative at the time. Oh I miss my childhood, playing FF7, FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, Resident evil 2-3 and many more.... Thanks Sony!
I loved and owned both. I tended to play N64 on my own a lot because I loved the AKI wrestling games, OoT, and Mario. I loved FFVII and MGS, but mostly PS1 was my go-to when I wanted to play something with a friend because it had such a vast library. I think a tie is pretty fair.
I love both systems, although when it came to playing Nightmare Creatures, Forsaken, Army Men, Command & Conquer and others games on both systems, it seemed like the N64 offered more. Yeah, the PS one had more realistic video clips and all, but the N64 would offer you more weapon options, extra multiplayer options, no memory card required most of the time, weapons that would double your health (Nightmare Creatures final sword for example), extra levels, longer levels, etc.
N64 games are still holding up alot better in the mid to late 2010s over ps1 one games, the games were fewer on n64 but way way better, and critically acclaimed and again n64s games just play and look better in 1996 and even 2018 over ps1, n64 is winner in my option, even if it had a M shaped controller and no Cds
As a kid i would agree but today im older and want something deeper the collect 120 stars to save the princess and metal gear is doing just that had my first playthru this year and enjoyed it a lot! The super smash bros titles are going to be my all time favorites next to the mass effect trilogy

@@m.devellis had both, at the time, I enjoyed the depth of the games on the PS1 but, times come when you just want a bit of fun on the console and that's where the n64 kicks ps butt. Also for that reason, the PS1 doesn't do deep story games well at all by today's standards but the n64 is still fun. There was no right or wrong machine in the 90s but now if I were to get 1, n64 all the way

PS1 had A LOT of a games and A LOT of them are Great. They have something to offer for everyone... Kids can play Spyro, Crash, Gex whil adults can play Resident Evil, Thrill Kill, Metal Gear.

+randumo24 Backwards compatibility on the PS3 almost destroyed the PlayStation franchise. The system sold terribly because of how overpriced it was, and that was with Sony taking a $300 loss on each console. Taking backwards compatibility away saved PlayStation.
+Constantinos Michael My PS one broke after 4 years. My PS2 broke after 2 years. My second PS2 broke after 2 years. My third PS2 has hardly been touched. My N64 still works perfectly.
@@denis-florian_0.57 They both have a d-pad on the left, start and select buttons in the middle, 4 buttons in formation of a cross on the right, and trigger buttons. The only thing the ps one controller added was another set of trigger buttons, and handles(although handles already existed on other controllers, the snes controller didn't have that.)
What I like about this generation is that both consoles were different enough so that both consoles were worth it in the end. N64 had the strong first party support, 4 player support of the bat, better graphics, and better performance but the PS1 had its improvements with increase in space, higher quality from music and sound, FMVs, and stronger third party support from the bigger boys like Konami, Square, and Capcom. Really no winner in terms of system performance, quality, or even library imo.
Too true. individual aspects may see one console over the other, but all things considered they really do tie, which is weird considering how massively different they were.
the wii u is not. the only difference is processing power and graphical capabilities, Activision basically ported over the Xbox360 version of BO2 to the Wii U

I'm surprised they didn't mention total sales figures. N64 - 32 million PS1 - 102 million. I enjoyed both consoles for different reasons but I wonder why PS1 sold so much more. Was it cheaper? This is a real question btw...
Discs are cheaper to produce than cartridges. Which gave the PSX an advantage in sales numbers. Other than having some good titles.. Btw I owned an N64 back then and still do.
I actually bought the Nintendo 64 BEFORE I got the PlayStation back then. But, the Nintendo 64's games were overpriced and there were FAR less N64 games than PlayStation games. That is, for every 1 N64 game there 10 more PlayStation games. The only games I liked on N64 were Mario 64 and Mario Kart. I think that Nintendo shot themselves in the foot and missed the boat by not making N64 CD-ROM based when they were thinking about it and had the chance. If they would have done that, the PlayStation generation would have probably been short-lived. After I bought PlayStation, my N64 ended up collecting dust and I ended up playing/buying A LOT more PlayStation games than N64 games. And I wasn't the only one! EVERYBODY liked PlayStation. This includes most of my friends, neighborhoods, relatives, college friends, girlfriends and most non-gamers too. People were impressed with the fact that PlayStation games looked or ran like movies; I could also upload my own audio while playing a game; PlayStation had more sports games and PlayStation not only could be used as a game system, but it could be used as a CD player as well. So, the PlayStation was used at parties too. PlayStation was simply a win win win. And that is why everybody liked it! After maybe Mario, hardly anybody played N64. PlayStation simply had A LOT more to offer with games and everything else. And Sony STILL do now with PS4! And a lot of people STILL like PlayStation products!
@Risen General The case about GoldenEye is the fact that it was one of the first FPS on consoles. GoldenEye was very important, on this case, for console industry, to help to take this kind of games from PCs to consoles. And the fun about this game is the four players mode. One of the best memories from my childhood, about videogames, is playing "007 - GoldenEye" with four friends, everyone trying to stole the golden gun from the others. Nostalgic!
@Risen General (Hi! Sorry to response too late. I was busy by these days). I agree ("Turok" was/is amazing, although I think "Goldeneye" was amazing too). And, in fact: It was difficult to have to pay so expensive in a cartridge, while CDs were much cheaper.
What about FF7, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Crash, Castlevania? Are you crazy? Those games I named usually get a spot in top ten games of all time.
I had a PSone. I like n64 for the mario's and Goldeneye, perfect dark etc. but PSone had like, 10 exclusives for every 1 exclusives and third party support out the ass. N64 had hardly any 2d fighting games and like, 300 titles compared to psone's over a thousand
Playstation was alot better than the Nintendo 64, it was a much better console with CD-Rom technology, while Nintendo still relied on the old junky cartridges that would end up not even working in over time and plus the Playstation had much better games at the time like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil and not to mention the N64 console itself was crap also
That's strange, my N64 that I got back in '96 still works to this day. None of the games or the system have broken yet.. While I like the Playstation, over time, the laser optics or the CD motor will have to be repaired. Playstation had a superior library and video quality, but not built to last.
+liveswired that they will, and besides you can't pick up your ps1 today and play for two reasons. One, the disks are easily scratched and I would totally support a Cartridge console today. And two, the games are forgetable, once you finish them there's no replay value, but the n64's games are still beloved today

Happy to see this as a tie. Both systems were just too good to pick one. I grew up with the N64 but played PS1 at friends houses. Games are the main reason to pick a favorite console imo and both had such good games that are still some of my favorites of all time. So in this case a tie feels justified. Where is the Sega Saturn on this list?
I had both back then (and still have them) and I must say I spent playing N64 more. Goldeneye, Mario 64, Doom 64, Conquer, Mario Kart, Banjo_&Kazooie...honestly those games were so much better than anything on PSX that my PSX was mostly waiting and I played only RPGs on it. I loved Xenogears - my favorite PSX game and it was on par with N64 games I mentioned.
Sony PlayStation is the clear winner. Metal Gear Solid, RPG games, Medal of Honor series, Legacy of Kain series, Strider 2, Fighting games, Silent Hill, Resident Evil series, Tomb Raider series, Racing games, MDK, Shooters and a huge amount of 3rd party support. The N64 can't touch the PS-X in terms of support/games. But the N64 does have some classics. They are the Zelda games, THQ/Aki wrestling games, GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark. Personally, it is a tough choice to choose. I personally love the N64 for personal reasons but if I really had to choose, I'm going with the PS-X.
N64 had a much better exclusive lineup, and much better hardware. All the PS1 had going for it as a console was the use of discs (although that came with it looong load times, so its not even much of an advantage).. and it was the first to have dual analogs, but they really stole the analog stick from Nintendo so.. :P It's not even a competition, really, N64 wins when you get down to brass tacks.
Yet I’m a kid and I have fun playing frickin NES games. Plus, I wanna be a video game console collector someday so that might give me a chance to get a PlayStation and N64. Whenever I see these types of comments I feel like I just have to reply to them.

Id like to know exactly what game required that specific config, because I'VE never seen it. N64 controller was a case of wasted genius, people rarely realize how cusomizable it is.. You can hold it multiple ways for different games. It's really fun. I kinda hate how controllers are all homogenized now, basically all rip off the basic 360 shape over and over again, even the switch controllers..

Few things - 1. I bought my own consoles. I remember buying my first Ps1 when I was 16 for $650 AUD. It was crazy expensive but worth saving for. 2. The library on Ps1 Games easy beats the n64 library. 3. Ps1 Games had revolutionary CGI cutscenes for the time, which were pretty rare on the n64. 4. Ps1 had full speech in many of its games. 5. There were heaps on games released on multiple CD’s, like ffvii, which made the game even longer. N64 Games were limited to the one cart, obviously. So, having both as a kid (I still have them even now) and as much as I love nintendo.. Sony had the winning console as far as I’m concerned.
I was a Nintendo kid growing up, but my cousin was always on Team Sony. Any time he would come over to my house, he was always ecstatic to play N64 and I always loved going over to play Playstation. It's crazy because when you look back to when you were a child, the console you didn't have in your home was always a treat to play any time you had the chance to. I really yearn for those days again. Times were simple.

And I know people hate hearing this but its true, the Wii really was just a casual gaming system (hence why it did as well as it did). When you compare the quality of its games (especially 3rd party ones) to what the PS3 and 360 had there really is no comparison.
In the N64, 4 players could play at the same time while the PS was only for 2 players at the same time. Some of the best games for the N64 were multiplayer: Mario party, goldeneye, Mario kart, Mario tenis, excitebike 64.
Though strangely enough you could hook up two mutli taps to the PS1 for 8 players. Then Sony did the same on the PS2 when the three other consoles had 4 ports.

Here's one to tip the scale in ps1's favor and that is, that it supported pirated games which made games much more accessible to a broader audience than N64. Back in the days the rivalry between those 2 was real, but majority of people that I know decided to go with sony instead of nintendo just because of this fact. Just ask yourself, would you rather have 200+ games at your disposal or 5 to 6 games :D

PS1 was chipped easy, compared to ps2 in older versions you could switch a orignal game to the pirated and you could play the pirated without the special chip, not 100% working and in later ps1 bios you really wanted the chip. Nintendo lost the battle because of piracy, the N64DD should be better or the N64 from the start.
I seriously love the n64. I mean the zelda titles on n64 are easily 2 of the greatest games of all time, and both still hold up as amazing games if you play them today. However, the same can be said for final fantasy titles on ps1. All 3 were superb, and the length of the games was so crazy at that time. At the end of the day these two consoles really are a tie. Any true gaming lover would probably have both today. But I have to give the edge to n64 for one reason only, and that's nostalgia. When I look back at the feeling I had the first time I picked up the ocarina in OoT, it really shows the definition of the word to be true. I feel joy, pain, happiness and sorrow. And it being the last of a dying breed, the cartridge consoles, was another thing I loved. However, I could just as easily say the same for ps1. But I'll leave it at that.

It was very unfair to give the point to the Playstation for 'Innovative Features'. The N64 introduced the rumble pack, joystick, Expansion pack, Microphone and the Gameboy transfer pack. You gave one example about how the Playstation used CDs instead of cartridges but the Saturn and Sega CD were doing that before the Playstation was. It was hardly 'innovation'

I bought both at the time. But exchanged my ps1 for a Japanese import n64 as soon as available. Sold it when years flew by, but the nostalgia kicked in and today I own 5 n64 models and 3 ps1's.. And a lot more other consoles, accessories and games. Things I couldn't buy at the time or for other reasons.
I like the n64 a bit more, because of the cartridges and more fun gameplay. No loading times and way more reliable hardware.
Also the controller of the n64 suits me more.

I think it's because the N64s format inhibited the console, put constraints on its ability. Nintendo were still in the 80s, using cartridge based technology, while all the other competitors were upgrading to cd. Graphics were superior on the n64 but they suffered from ghosting fog, pop up and soundtracks were limited. The PS1 indeed won the console war and had a 10 year reign -although this was mostly down to clever marketting, competative pricing, a great software catalogue and a superior storage format.

i remember being taken to the store to buy a ps1 when i was 7 years old. its 1 of the best memories ever . i got resident evil 2 and the tryhard worker tried to talk my dad out of it lmao. called my best friend over and we played ps1 the entire night and didnt go to sleep until 6am haha..then christmas came around and my mom got me and my bro a n64 cuz hes a couple years younger than me and she wanted us to have more kid friendly games but 007 was one of the games we got 1st🤣🤣👍👍.

PS1 takes this easily. It had a lot more variety of games that were incredible. It was a combination of quality AND quantity with solid, classic titles like Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3, Spider-Man, the SmackDown! games, Colony Wars (a fantastic yet criminally underrated game), Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk, Final Fantasy 7 etc, Chrono Cross and so on..
N64 had some good titles too, specifically the Mario games, Conker's Bad Fur Day and WWF No Mercy, the Rare games, but they weren't all that big in the library and couldn't beat the PS1 games IMO.

Yeah, the first time I held a Nintendo 64 controller I felt it was a perfect fit for the games you played on it. Everything clicked. I had no problem picking up and playing Super Mario 64, Goldeneye or anything else right off the bat. Granted the Gamecube controller was a better design later on.

They're both GREAT consoles with amazing games all around! :) I found myself replaying a lot of PS1 games, some from my childhood, and some that I've never played before and they really got me hooked in for hours on end. Especially Silent Hill and Colony Wars.

Yes, there was actually a time when Nintendo had the most powerful console on the market as far as hardware goes. They had the lead in that area until the Sega Dreamcast launched. Odd considering that now Nintendo is known for always having the least powerful hardware compared to Sony and Microsoft's consoles.
N64 was never more powerful overall than ps1. Ps1 had fmv, and actually had one of if not the best soundchip in its generation. The n64 literally is a step back from the snes since n64 literally had no dedicated soundchip. Storage space sucked on n64 and ran cartridges. Ps1 ran cds and played movies known as vcds. Only thing the n64 had over ps1 was more controller ports, less loading times, and had better looking true 3d games i would say. Overall ps1 was graphically more well rounded and had better hardware features. Plus the controller was better too since it literally has the blueprint that has been followed up to the ps5 with obvious improvements since the ps1.

The N64 CPU was a lot faster that the PS1 CPU (93 MHz vs. 33 MHz) which is almost triple the speed, and the N64 also had double the amount of RAM as the PS1 (4 MB vs. 2 MB). Also, the N64 GPU was capable of trilinear filtering which the PS1 could not do. There were some things the PS1 did better, but overall the N64 had the more powerful hardware.

That was a pretty big bottleneck for the N64 and prevented developers from taking full advantage of the full hardware capabilities. But I still think games looked better overall on the N64 over the PS1 even with that limitation.

I would have disagreed based on Ocarina of Time being one of my number one games of all time. But... It was included on the Gamecube version of The Wind Waker making the Gamecube the console that I actually played it all the way through on. We also had Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin on GC so... you do have point.

ELVISFX there is nothing wrong with carts in fact I like them better and I'll tell you why. Carts load faster,disks are easy to destroy regardless of you being an adult or kid,they last waaaaaayyy longer,in my opinion they look cooler, and disks glitch more.

I loved and owned both. I tended to play N64 on my own a lot because I loved the AKI wrestling games, OoT, and Mario. I loved FFVII and MGS, but mostly PS1 was my go-to when I wanted to play something with a friend because it had such a vast library. I think a tie is pretty fair.

I love both systems, although when it came to playing Nightmare Creatures, Forsaken, Army Men, Command & Conquer and others games on both systems, it seemed like the N64 offered more. Yeah, the PS one had more realistic video clips and all, but the N64 would offer you more weapon options, extra multiplayer options, no memory card required most of the time, weapons that would double your health (Nightmare Creatures final sword for example), extra levels, longer levels, etc.
N64 games are still holding up alot better in the mid to late 2010s over ps1 one games, the games were fewer on n64 but way way better, and critically acclaimed and again n64s games just play and look better in 1996 and even 2018 over ps1, n64 is winner in my option, even if it had a M shaped controller and no Cds

The only thing the ps one controller added was another set of trigger buttons, and handles(although handles already existed on other controllers, the snes controller didn't have that.)

What I like about this generation is that both consoles were different enough so that both consoles were worth it in the end.
N64 had the strong first party support, 4 player support of the bat, better graphics, and better performance but the PS1 had its improvements with increase in space, higher quality from music and sound, FMVs, and stronger third party support from the bigger boys like Konami, Square, and Capcom.
Really no winner in terms of system performance, quality, or even library imo.

Discs are cheaper to produce than cartridges. Which gave the PSX an advantage in sales numbers. Other than having some good titles.. Btw I owned an N64 back then and still do.

I actually bought the Nintendo 64 BEFORE I got the PlayStation back then. But, the Nintendo 64's games were overpriced and there were FAR less N64 games than PlayStation games. That is, for every 1 N64 game there 10 more PlayStation games. The only games I liked on N64 were Mario 64 and Mario Kart.
I think that Nintendo shot themselves in the foot and missed the boat by not making N64 CD-ROM based when they were thinking about it and had the chance. If they would have done that, the PlayStation generation would have probably been short-lived.
After I bought PlayStation, my N64 ended up collecting dust and I ended up playing/buying A LOT more PlayStation games than N64 games. And I wasn't the only one! EVERYBODY liked PlayStation. This includes most of my friends, neighborhoods, relatives, college friends, girlfriends and most non-gamers too.
People were impressed with the fact that PlayStation games looked or ran like movies; I could also upload my own audio while playing a game; PlayStation had more sports games and PlayStation not only could be used as a game system, but it could be used as a CD player as well. So, the PlayStation was used at parties too. PlayStation was simply a win win win. And that is why everybody liked it! After maybe Mario, hardly anybody played N64. PlayStation simply had A LOT more to offer with games and everything else. And Sony STILL do now with PS4! And a lot of people STILL like PlayStation products!

@Risen General The case about GoldenEye is the fact that it was one of the first FPS on consoles. GoldenEye was very important, on this case, for console industry, to help to take this kind of games from PCs to consoles.
And the fun about this game is the four players mode. One of the best memories from my childhood, about videogames, is playing "007 - GoldenEye" with four friends, everyone trying to stole the golden gun from the others. Nostalgic!

That's strange, my N64 that I got back in '96 still works to this day. None of the games or the system have broken yet.. While I like the Playstation, over time, the laser optics or the CD motor will have to be repaired. Playstation had a superior library and video quality, but not built to last.

Games are the main reason to pick a favorite console imo and both had such good games that are still some of my favorites of all time. So in this case a tie feels justified. I had both back then (and still have them) and I must say I spent playing N64 more. Goldeneye, Mario 64, Doom 64, Conquer, Mario Kart, Banjo_&Kazooie...honestly those games were so much better than anything on PSX that my PSX was mostly waiting and I played only RPGs on it. I loved Xenogears - my favorite PSX game and it was on par with N64 games I mentioned.
Sony PlayStation is the clear winner. Metal Gear Solid, RPG games, Medal of Honor series, Legacy of Kain series, Strider 2, Fighting games, Silent Hill, Resident Evil series, Tomb Raider series, Racing games, MDK, Shooters and a huge amount of 3rd party support. The N64 can't touch the PS-X in terms of support/games. But the N64 does have some classics. They are the Zelda games, THQ/Aki wrestling games, GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark. Personally, it is a tough choice to choose. I personally love the N64 for personal reasons but if I really had to choose, I'm going with the PS-X.

I said the exact same thing lol. That clown holding the N64 controller was holding it like a moron, claiming it was awkward while holding the analog handle AND the D-pad handle. Id like to know exactly what game required that specific config, because I'VE never seen it. Then turns around and says the PS1 controller was innovative, while the narrator literally says its a copy of the Super Nintendo design. N64 by a mile, and its not even close.
@@RedRaider14 Actually, holding the Analog and D-pad handle is great for FPS games! Use the D pad to move and the analog to aim, Z to shoot. Feels super comfortable! N64 controller was a case of wasted genius, people rarely realize how cusomizable it is.. You can hold it multiple ways for different games. It's really fun.

1. I bought my own consoles. I remember buying my first Ps1 when I was 16 for $650 AUD. It was crazy expensive but worth saving for.
2. The library on Ps1 Games easy beats the n64 library.
3. Ps1 Games had revolutionary CGI cutscenes for the time, which were pretty rare on the n64.
4. Ps1 had full speech in many of its games.
5. There were heaps on games released on multiple CD’s, like ffvii, which made the game even longer. N64 Games were limited to the one cart, obviously.
So, having both as a kid (I still have them even now) and as much as I love nintendo.. Sony had the winning console as far as I’m concerned.

I was a Nintendo kid growing up, but my cousin was always on Team Sony. Any time he would come over to my house, he was always ecstatic to play N64 and I always loved going over to play Playstation. It's crazy because when you look back to when you were a child, the console you didn't have in your home was always a treat to play any time you had the chance to. I really yearn for those days again. Times were simple.

And I know people hate hearing this but its true, the Wii really was just a casual gaming system (hence why it did as well as it did). When you compare the quality of its games (especially 3rd party ones) to what the PS3 and 360 had there really is no comparison.
In the N64, 4 players could play at the same time while the PS was only for 2 players at the same time. Some of the best games for the N64 were multiplayer: Mario party, goldeneye, Mario kart, Mario tenis, excitebike 64.
But when played 1 player they didn't really hold up. 1 player gaming matters too
Though strangely enough you could hook up two mutli taps to the PS1 for 8 players. Then Sony did the same on the PS2 when the three other consoles had 4 ports.
Nintendo 64 is the best one that I have :D

I dread to think how much time I ploughed into Goldeneye and Perfect Dark in my formative years. N64 has the edge for those two games alone.
My N64 still works to this day holds ups.

Here's one to tip the scale in ps1's favor and that is, that it supported pirated games which made games much more accessible to a broader audience than N64. Back in the days the rivalry between those 2 was real, but majority of people that I know decided to go with sony instead of nintendo just because of this fact. Just ask yourself, would you rather have 200+ games at your disposal or 5 to 6 games :D

TheDuckClock Wasn't really aware of that, before ps1, I owned sega, SNES and NES and all of them used cartridges and couldn't be pirated, so coming from that I concluded it would be the same with N64, after ps1 I've switched to PC...
+Stefan Petrovic you got the point right, I lived this generation on my teens. PS1 was chipped easy, compared to ps2
in older versions you could switch a orignal game to the pirated and you could play the pirated without the special chip, not 100% working and in later ps1 bios you really wanted the chip.
Nintendo lost the battle because of piracy, the N64DD should be better or the N64 from the start.
I seriously love the n64. I mean the zelda titles on n64 are easily 2 of the greatest games of all time, and both still hold up as amazing games if you play them today. However, the same can be said for final fantasy titles on ps1. All 3 were superb, and the length of the games was so crazy at that time.
At the end of the day these two consoles really are a tie. Any true gaming lover would probably have both today. But I have to give the edge to n64 for one reason only, and that's nostalgia. When I look back at the feeling I had the first time I picked up the ocarina in OoT, it really shows the definition of the word to be true. I feel joy, pain, happiness and sorrow. And it being the last of a dying breed, the cartridge consoles, was another thing I loved. However, I could just as easily say the same for ps1. But I'll leave it at that.
