I got an opportunity to work on a 2013 ford fusion from my brother. His power steering assist went out so he drove it in to the shop. That shop could not fix it. After they had it for 3 weeks, the car would not even drive.
They had errors about steering and then coolant temp too high. When the coolant temp was too high it goes into limp mode. They replaced a coolant temp sensor and still it was failed. Codes PO118 and P1299.
They quoted him roughly $3k to replace the steering rack, labor, reprogramming the rack and realignment. He was finished with the Fusion and bought a Subaru Forester.
He got another quote from another shop for about the same price for the power steering. He said that's too much and told me he got an offer from that shop to buy it from him for $500.
The car needs a good cleaning (not as bad as yours did), and it has some scrapes and a dent and a few scratches. He told me I could have for $500 if I was interested. I read a bit about Fusions, then I went and towed it to my home. I figured I could learn some things.
I found that the electric steering had extra wires on it that happened to be from a coolant level sensor added as a recall from Ford. The recall sensor kit is $1200. This recall uses the CAN bus and also goes through the electric steering assist motor.
I took a good look at the motor housing, and it was cracked. I removed the motor from the car while the rack was still installed. The motor was not repairable, and the electronics on it were wet and corroded. I figured that the coolant level error and high temp error were caused by the motor electronics.
My scanner showed me that the coolant was at 0.5 mm, and the PCM could not communicate with the sensor.
I bought a used steering motor from ebay (one that has a program in it). I installed the motor, and I was all back to normal with the CAN bus communication. The engine ran fine without any coolant errors. Coolant level read 108mm after that.
I did have the belt skipping on the power assist motor cog, so I loosened the motor and repositioned it to tighten the belt as there is no tensioner pulley like there is on the F-150 power assist steering.
Now it's all normal again. I have learned a lot and to me, that's worth it. I believe your story tells us it was worth it to you also. I'm amazed at new transmissions, too.
Interestingly enough, the service on the Fusion transmission change interval is 150,000 miles. (Unless I'm mistaken). That seems like a long time to me. I guess that's why they fail, perhaps. I'm sure that's why the red fluid was black.
    Cheers.

I was wondering if the ozone machine got rid of the smell?
