  • In this video, I remove and replace the rear disk rotors and disk pads on the 80S (1996) Land Cruiser. This is how I do it, but there may be other (and even better) ways that folks do this work. I also discuss and show how to adjust the e-brake via the shoe pads inside the disk hub.

    On the rear LEFT- disconnect the shock strut and swing it away, that little extra exercise will save you so much time and frustration/swearing. From a previous person unknown, My left lower caliper bolt came out eventually and thank the lord the bolt took much of the cross threading damage, again because the bolt was hampered by the shock, just F it outta the way. Happy days (caliper removal task only)

    500,000 miles and had to put pads on her today. I wonder how many sets of pads she had up until now but she is good to go for another 50,000 at least before she will need another set. GREAT VIDEO '96 Lexus LX450

      That’s awesome. Still have mine and still big smile every time I drive it. I’ve changed my rear brakes out once again since this video was made. This last time I pulled the axles out and repacked the axle bearings as well. Was a good service. I got about 38k miles out of the EBC brakes. I think I had them engaging too strong as my front to rear bias valve never was re adjusted after my lift. I went back with Power Stop pads and rotors this last time.

    Great video's Clay!! I just got a 1996 Land Cruiser on Monday and have been watching all of you video's. Mine has 140K miles on it and will be doing my front and rear brakes in the very near future, and your video's will help me do it my self. Thanks for all of you video's!     I'm really enjoying your LC videos! Even though i've done it a few times before, I picked up some new knowledge watching this:) My 1990 80 series just turned 410000km. Still going very strong! With this kind of maintenence, your car will still be strong for many, many years!

    Thanks for the video. I've went through 3=4 sets on the front and getting ready to do third set on rear since I've owned it. I did the fronts once myself. This will be my first time doing the rears myself. I thought you had to manually back the rear calipers in instead of pressing. I've had to do that on some other rear disc vehicles. That's why I pulled your video up. Great video Thanks.

      Yeah, the Land Cruiser have actual shoes for the e-brake vs using the pads on the rotor. So it’s really straight forward and a great design.

    great video because i have not done the brakes on a 4x4 before so this helped me associate with what and how of these trucks cheers .. oh and if you undo the lower slider bolt you should be able to do the brakes without removing the entire caliper .. i may do that as a video myself in the near future but for now cheers again

    On the emergency brake adjustment. You can do that also going reverse on the road and pump your hand brake till you feel the handbrake engaging

    hey there, tky for this video, I just had a problema with the left emcy brake getting stock somehow and overheated on my lc 97....this coming weekend everything is coming out. for now I will keep the original disc/drum assembly, but looking fwd to get some disc as the ones you installed. rgds from PANAMA

      Tom Baggs - I actually left them off my pads Tom. They wouldn’t stay on correctly for me and I didn’t want them to come off and get caught up in the works somehow. I check my pads with every tire rotation so I wasn’t worried too much about not having a squeal tab to let me know when to change my pads next time.

    when you are pushing the piston back into the caliper, use the old pad between the piston and caliper tool. Makes everything much easier.

    Pretty good video...did rears on my 96 lx450 today; however, watching around 10:00 to 14:43 I don't see how the hub comes off. I needed to replace my hub assembly but on the 96 lx it looks like its held on by all six nuts on the back of the shield? Suffice it to say, I just put on pads but please expound on how the hub comes off. Also a piston caliper tool really helps in compressing that piston back, mine wouldn't go back with the ol' 6" C Clamp and board trick. Oreilly's $9 dollar twist handle crank plunger style did the trick. Had a few grooves in my rotor so I'll have to revisit as it will probably eat my pad up...but I'm quiet and all no scraping. LOL.

      +rdietz68 Okay, the rear hubs also house the e-brake shoes which push out on the inside of the hub and that's how they hold your wheel from turning when the e-brake is applied. You have to often use a little tool and loosen those shoes up before the hub will pull straight off the lug studs. Watch the video at 17:45 and you will see a little star wheel that you can turn through the hole in the hub to loosen the shoes some (see 25:23 in the video to do this). Obviously you can't have the e-brake pulled and on! and you will also have to have the entire caliper off. Lastly, at 32:15 in the video I use a piston compression tool like you describe. Hope this helps. C

    Another great video Clay - How often do you recommend packing the bearings on a 100? I've owned my rig for about 3 years and have never touched the bearings, I also don't take it off road.

    in Australia we have a plate welded on the tow bar where those 4 bolt holes are on the rear there.we can tow 3500 ton

    Anti seize compound can be a life saver for future brake changes. Also, wouldnt the drilled slotted rotors catch mud you think?

      Mud/water etc will get in there but will get worked out as you use the brakes. That's why I suggest orienting those slots such that as the rotor turns the debris will be centrifugally (sp?) thrown out. The little half way thru drilled holes may pack full...

    It's Rupert again, hope the family is well. I have two q‘s, 1st. can u give me some guidance to replace my the fuel filter on my '96 LC, I can't find any good videos about it. I would like to know its location & what needs to be removed to get to it. 2nd. as mentioned I will need to rebuild the knuckle & replace the inner axle seal. Do you recommend the rebuild kit from Slee, I am worried about buying aftermarket stuff only to have the seal leak again soon afterwards. Thanks.

      +Rupert Gaznabbi Hello Rupert! Yes, we are all fine, thank for asking. For the fuel filter, I've had a replacement on my shelf in the garage for over a year! I need to replace it and I do need to video it for you guys. it is located up under the intake manifold and very hard to change from reports on forums like ih8mud.com. But it is doable without removing the intake. I hear you will get fuel on you and it is not fun. Much better design on the 100S LCs. If I get to mine soon, I'll publish a video. On the inner axle seal, I've heard mixed reviews on both the aftermarket ones and the factory replacements. I really think either will work and the problem is probably with the methods folks use to get them in there and depends on if you get it straight and don't damage it in doing so. This is also something I haven't tackled yet. I think you will be okay with either seal set. Just take your time and read up on the methods folks have used on ih8mud.com.     If you convert it to split rims, does it have to be drum brakes?

      I’m thinking the split rims will not really affect the rotor/hat/parking brake setup. The drum portion of this setup is for the E-Brake only. Not sure if you saw/understood that.

    My new pad kit(and pads that were in there)had little metal clips that went on only one end of the brake pad, curious as to why you didn't use them if you had them?

      Hey Kimo Clyde, Yeah, I had those as well, but I couldn't get them to stay in place. Gone by the first 100 mile inspection of the brakes...

      @@Texasknowhow Interesting... I think there were only four total and from what I remember, they clip on only the bottom of the pads. My pads I'm replacing had only two. Wonder if there's a trick to them to stay on or maybe they're not crucial.

      Okay, did some research (for whomever wants to know)and those clips are wear indicators and they go on each pad on the top tab. So one on each side, two per side(driver and passenger).

      Kimo Clyde - I knew exactly what they were, but like I said they didn’t stay on mine. I check my breaks with each 6000 mile tire rotation so I just blew them off and didn’t pursue a replacement.

      +Ross Carmack (BRAVOTF2) 3" using Old Man Emu stiff strings and shocks. Bought them from Cruiser Outfitters in Utah. Added Slee caster correction plates and Slee SS braided frame-to-caliper longer brake lines. Added a 2" lowering blocks to my sway-bar mounts (made them out of aluminum block) to keep them closer to level. The "stiff" springs, as they call them, have a little more lift and can take the added weight of a new bumper and winch moving forward. www.cruiseroutfitters.com

      I disagree, I think the longer videos are really helpful for lots of newcomers. If you want to play it at 1.5 or 2.0 speed, you can, and if you want to jump forward, you can do that, too. Just my two cents.

    Shoot, no info on how to do the hardest part,,,,the DRUM SHOES. Calipers and pads are easy, I need some tips on how to do the rear drum shoes for the parking brake. They are a PITA.

      moh2o -yes those are sometimes a big pain. You can take off the hubs/axles to get to them easier, but that in itself is a bit of work. I just did this job (re packing bearing, rear brakes, e-brake shoes and all) but I haven't gotten it published yet. Those shoes are easy when the hub is off. Sorry man. Take care, Clay

      If you are talking about the piston press Brake Tool, I got mine at Napa, but here is the same tool from Amazon - amzn.to/2oQ9iSL. Really handy tool. I used a "C" clamp for years, but this fits better. Hope this helps, Clay

    how tall is your garage door and /or whats the final height of your landcruiser after the lift and your tires..whats your tiresize?

      Steven Wood - Hi Steven, my garage has a 7' door which I could just fit under before I added the ARB touring rack. Now it won't fit through the door by about 3". My tires are 34.5" total and I have the OME lift that is about 3" so those tires clear the fenders etc.

      Steven, I haven't done the rear axle bearings yet. But last time I did a tire rotation I checked the play and they have some. I will first try to adjust the bearing preload (very similar to the front) on the axle as it is a full floater. If that doesn't feel right or correct the slack, then I'll video the bearing replacements. Should be in a few weeks if so. C

      +Marcos Fandiño Hi Again Marcos, I got all the kits for the brake sliding parts at the Toyota Dealership parts counter, they can help you. I got the rotors and pads from Amazon. I also got caliper rebuild kits from the dealer, but didn't rebuild the calipers in this video as they were recently replaced by the previous owner and were in good shape. I just checked Amazon and they don't carry the EBC rear rotors now. There were other brands on there tho. Hope this helps. Clay

    Hmmm.. mostly nice video.
    I was doing overhauling of brakes of VX 80 1993 and enough of brakepads left and material on discs but.. caliber pistons/cylinders was 60-70% stuck and some of them specially in rear rusty and destroyed. Change both rear pistons.
    But..
    Very important. You should never push the pistons back in without checking the status of them. Never. That's because within the rubber seal there can be dirt and even bad rust. When you press the pistons back in as you did in this video, specially with tool like this of yours, you will damage the inner most seal and your calibers will leak.. on rotors etc..
    And.. If cyls have start to rust, most simple thing is to replace them, not repair and or clean them.. they will rust again because the chrome "film" is the rust barrier..

      Bjarni Einarsson thanks for the comments. Many will argue with you on your "Never" statement. Mine are still performing excellent 3 years later... Of course I did a visual inspection, no rust, pistons moved back in easily, so I went on with the maintenance. No leaks at all.

      Ok.. no prob.. I must have missed that part in the video.. But to my best recollection the piston seems to be rather stiff inside the caliper as you did press it in with your tool.. that's sign of dirty one or at least dry one..
      It's possible to gain access to the cyl by moving the harmonic rubber seal front of the piston to clean it, I myself prefer to put wisegrip on brakehose (as mildly as I can) to block it, and then disassembly the caliber and then the cyl from the caliper fully for proper cleaning and close inspection. I use air to pop it out with help of towel around the piston etc..
      Lousy braking is mostly related to "stuck" or stiff cyl in caliper.

      Luis Hernandez - yeah we moved back to TX after 5 years there in Northern Va. moved back in 2017. 3” Old Man Emu lift. With Slee Caster correction plates. I fabbed the dropped links for the swaybars. Slee extended SS braided hoses fro brakes (Frame to axles).

      @@Billy-rr7re I said $7 or $8 for the whole set. Not $25. If someone quoted $25 it is still probably worth it for all the sliding surfaces - making all these like new will transform the way the brakes operate and are able to freely slide. If your surfaces are good, skip buying them.
