      I don’t understand how people could even defend the arch in the first place. It was obvious where this was going to go. Sure the arch gives you different leverages and it works your muscles differently but it absolutely gives you an advantage in terms of ROM. The fact that there isn’t any enforcement back arches would obviously lead to differences in ROM. This isn’t competing in strength, it’s competing in back flexibility.

      Except now we will have shitty depth calls for 2 lifts instead of 1 and bench is already complicated enough to judge. The angle to have a good view of both of those doesn’t really exist

    Calling that a bench press is like saying I can lift a car because I can rock it back and forth by pushing on the side of it. Absolutely ridiculous. It seems that there needs to be a required distance of travel. This is why I enjoy strongman competitions. In strongman, nearly all of the events require the same amount of movement of the weights for all competitors (ie. Move an atlas stone from the ground to a set height on a platform; drag an anchor from here to there; pull a truck to a set distance, etc). In physics, Work=Force x Distance traveled. For my 16” range of motion on bench as compared with this gals 1” ROM, I perform 16 times more work with the same weight.

    has anyone who criticize the ROM on these lifts actually tried doing one of these? I can't even imagine holding my 1RM like that, much less moving it. It doesn't even look like it would even hit the chest and is almost entirely arm based. just now getting curious about the specifics of this technique and how it utilizes the muscles as well as differs from a more commonly executed bench press.

  • @atrumluminarium

    I think the seated overhead press should be included as a competition lift (clarification: added as a new lift not to replace the bench press) from bar below chin to full lockout with the same calls as the bench press. Sure lifters could still trim ROM by widening the grip but it's weaker and they can't meet the bar half way by arching. That way the sport actually demands that the athletes' upper body strength is up to standard, the training time is shared with the bench press and adding a new lift is a good way to bring some more hype to the sport

    • @cedric7751
      @cedric7751 3 роки тому +1

      One way to solve that would be to use Joules instead of kilos to measure the lifts.
      Since joules is a measure of work (Force * Distance), a 50KG bench press with 30cm of ROM would score 50*9.81(earth gravity)*0.3 = 147.15 Joules
      While a 100kg with 10cm of ROM would only score 100*9.81*0.1 = 98.1 Joules.
      Same for deadlift so that shorties with long arms who lift with ultra wide sumo don't get the advantage anymore.
      And squat so you can add some technicality to it by having to choose between ass to grass with lower weight or half reps with higher weight.
      This could also make events more fun since you won't know your score until judges check the video to measure your ROM so the results couldn be delayed until the end of the event to add some suspense.

    Bench rules HAVE to be changed so elbow joint should atleast travel just below shoulder joint to count it as good repetition.
    In squat hips has to travel just below the knees to be considered good lift, same should be in benching, bringing elbows down below shoulder and that would be true test of bench press.
