Hey man, nice video. I was just looking for some FSW videos to get a little taste of nostalgia as I was actually one of the Dev's on this sim at Dovetail Games. I was the mission designer.
And actually, my NDA expired a while ago so I might be able to give you a little bit of insight too.
Now, Flight Sim has been my fist and foremost hobby ever since I was a kid. And at one point I was just looking at some job vacancies and I saw DTG come by, looking for a mission designer over in the UK. Even though I didn't have any game design experience, I though "whatever" and applied for it. Long story short, I got the job.
A little while later, moved from the Netherlands over to the UK and started work in a really passionate team. We actually had a few guys that worked on the early titles like FS2004, FSX, etc. We even had an ace who worked on the early foundations of the ESP engine (the flight sim engine). So we had a cracking team going.
However, even though we all wanted to truly make an amazing simulator, both visually and functionally, Dovetail Game's management ruined us by hardly giving us any resources and really limiting us in what we were allowed to do. The reason for this never was told to us but I have a pretty good idea why, which I'll tell a little later.
So, the actual dev team really put a lot of work, heart and soul into this sim. Most of us even gave up our free time just to create and test features which the management team didn't want us to do in working hours. Talking about stuff like satellite ground textures, live traffic, point lighting (3D lighting), sloped runways, auto-generated PBR runway and taxiway textures, etc. We created all these amazing features in our free time and were ready to be tested and implemented. Yet, management literally just blocked us from implementing it, never giving us reasons why. The only thing we were allowed to do with it all, was document it. Now, remember this when I tell you the reason why this flight sim failed.
Alongside the development, we were working on this project called "Project Kittyhawk", with two little studios you may or may not have heard of by now: Asobo and Microsoft. And one day we all showed up at work, were called for a meeting and got told that the sim was being cancelled and pulled out of Steam.
A little while later, Asobo and Microsoft released "Project Kittyhawk" A.K.A. "Microsoft Flight Simulator/FS2020".
Now, remember what I said about not being allowed to implement features but we did have to document them? Everything that we created in FSW, appeared in MSFS. Sloped runways, PBR global textures, PBR runways and taxiways, TrueSky, live traffic, 3D point lighting, etc. etc. All these features which we weren't allowed to use, did show up here. I think, all thanks to our documentation.
Also you were right on the money when stating FSW looked like FSX. Because guess what, so is MSFS. You can hardly see it these days, but if you just look at the sim's root folder structure, you'll recognise FSX in it.
Now, all of this is usually not an issue, as long as you have one project as, well just that. A development project. And the other released project as a final product. But that's not what Dovetail did. I think they damn well knew that FSW was never going to be a finished, final product. And yet they still decided to put it in the Steam store for as long as they could and make some money of it.
They gave empty promises stating that FSW was a "Work in Progress" and was going to have "Years of support and updates to come", when I'm pretty sure we weren't on Steam for longer than 6 months.
And not only that, don't forget that Dovetail actually sold a lot of in-house created DLC for it too. Heck, we even had a full-on company meeting at some point regarding the "Dovetail Flywheel". Which literally is a structure they copied from EA (as our CEO was an ex-EA director) to make people buy more DLC.
So, to summarize it all, in my opinion Dovetail games didn't only screw all their FSW customers over, but they actually stole from them.
Working on that dev team literally broke most of the devs apart mentally, especially realizing all of the above. Heck, I was only 20 when I left the company and got a burn-out out of it.
But yeah, the real reason why FSW failed in the end, was because it was never meant to succeed. It was simply a test bed for what we now know as "Microsoft Flight Simulator".
Sorry for the long story, but I just felt like this had to be shared at some point.
I'm so sorry to hear that
Seems to me they were bought out by MSFS to remove competition, people in charge didnt tell the devs because they probably all went home with a big paycheck.
@@PatriotCody I don't even think we were bought out. I think we were hired for R&D reasons from the very start but Dovetail just turned it into a money grab anyway.
Dovetail Games really is like that. It's a truly disgusting company ran by ex-Electronic Arts executives, who are only interested in making money.
They even invented the "Dovetail Flywheel" which was a marketing strategy that created a cycle, in which the consumers were basically forced to buy DLC. That meeting pissed me off to no end when they announced that strategy.
It's one thing to suspect most of that stuff but hearing this is exactly how things went down... Damn. I never bought it (I have a policy of not buying early access software) but I had hopes for it.
Hey I won FSX and have lots of scenery add ons, hundreds of dollars worth. I even upgraded my SSD to 1T. I keep getting an "Out Of Memory message". Even though Dovetail has moved on, I'd like to learn how to upgrade FSX from a 32bit to a 64bit. I'm trying to get rid of that OOM message. Is that impossible for me to do?

There was a Flight Sim World? I mean I’ve played Train Sim World and that has tons of realistic components. Hope flight sim world returns one day.
There were few add-ons - Piper 28R Arrow III from Just Flight, Curtis P-40F Warhawk from Blue Sky, Big Bear City airport, and a lot of free missions and payware mission packs. Missions were nice and with nice effects like broken cockpit front window and so on. Jet airliner (A320) was about to come into the simulator.
I have FSW. Out-of-the-box graphics are really good, even better than X-Plane’s. But this simulator requires quite a powerful PC to run smoothly, that’s one thing Swiss didn’t mention.
And there’s a fun thing: I’ve seen this simulator for sale (DVD) in my local gaming shop just a few days ago and was really suprised that they still have it. I guess it shows how popular it is ...

You can convert pretty easily planes from FSX to FSW. Though some planes may be a bit buggy or lack some detail, nevertheless they work.
How?
So FLYWINGS appeared to steal the menu design from this
Have this game on steam. Used to keep playing it when MSFS 2020 was still buggy on launch. Only recently swapped back due to VR support. FSW was on track to be a great simulator, found it odd that it died out.
I actually have FSW and I love it, I am upset that they stopped it. Great soundtrack.
Gotta love the almost flat terrain on the approach to St. Bart's. Someone must've bulldozed that famous hill.
When the game was released it was lacking some options but was a work in progress, jets and helicopters were coming as too was mods, Secretly though Microsoft where working on FS2020 and had sold the FSX licenses to several companies many years prior, when Microsoft spoke to Dovetail to buy the license back (a option in the contract) Dovetail had a decision to make, sell for a sum reflecting the work they made converting it to 64 bit etc or maintain the license and compete against a giant. Closing FSW had nothing to do with lacking jets, i had many (70% worked) addon scenery's in FSW which was a simple script input unknown by many. Lets not forget that FSW had Truesky, Active Weather, Orbix Global Textures, many high def airports and planes which in other sims where payware, the rain in FSW killed what was in XPlane. Many including myself received it for free after buying in to Dovetails testing beta "64bit Flight School" for only $12.00. If not for the FS2020 5 year secret design, FSW would still be with us and greatly enhanced.
that's exactly it, the video makes no sense
But where can i download? It looks so beautiful or maybe a flight sim like this
It's hard to argue about publishers and developers, but honestly while that game does look pretty good, Dovetail Games is just a ridiculous company to me, especially for Train Sim World. The pricing for addons is absurd while they lack polishing so hard. An addon comes out, gets sold for 30€ and then never gets updated anymore no matter how many problems it has. To me they are pretty much scamming. The base quality of TSW2 is amazing and some studios put some real hard work into addons, i guess you can kinda compare that to the Marketplace in fs2020, but the pricing is just beyond me.
Thats also what i hate about these sims. They are just so utterly expensive. Euro Truck sim 2 shows how its done with its DLC pricing and the insane community that creates insane mods and most of them are even free. While in Fs2020 you pay 11€ for more weather options or 40€ for different skinned ground vehicles. You can't make that shit up, its incredible.
(oh and then there is the scammers in Fs2020 where you buy an embraer 195 for example which is absolute garbage and you can't even refund that after you found out its pretty much unusable)
Swiss001: You can‘t buy this Game
Swiss001: brought it...
“This plane flys a bit sketchy, maybe that’s just because i’m weird” - Swiss001 2021
I was really surprised when I saw this video because Dovetail Games actually makes Train Simulators, but this is a welcome change.
Oh and as someone who has had many years of experience with Dovetail addons, they are the reason I don't like them that much. They allow basically any quality of addon for ridiculous prices, I bought a railroad route for my TS game for 10 USD, it looks terrible, it uses a massive amount of memory, scenery sucks, and for some reason everything is about 10% transparent. What I am saying is, the addons for these games don't work.
Also, they forgot to add Dublin airport. They added regional airports of Ireland... but forgot Dublin?! Actually, the entire East of the country was forgotten..
And this is a British studio... but they do not care about anything than money... DTG
Fun Fact: *Flight Sim World and Train Sim World Have the Same Developer Which is Dovetail*

Yea they should keep it at TSW And Train simulator

I own Flight Sim World and the constant bitching and whining from so called reviewers, killed it way too prematurely.
During the early stages of introduction (early access), people were ruthless towards it.
All those naysayers finally got what they wanted: The termination of a very promising platform.
Shame on you.
The rain effects were outstanding as many other aspects of FSW.
It also had a 64 bit configuration that gave it superb fluidity in regards to FPS.
I am very glad to own it, even though the polishing stage never had a chance to materialize.

Dovetail's train sims are just awesome....really feeling missed out on this flight sim

@@undok i cant believe someone reply to old comment , but on my device is the opposite lol, fsx performance is a huge mess while both xplane 12 and fs 2020 run better (on newark airport, new york) , xplanes 12 run like more than 2 times faster than fsx with somewhat near max object count A.K.A building and trees . Maybe its true if you play on old gpu. I can only get high fps on fsx with disabling world object, making it look like old infinite flight
The DA42 looks pretty fancy but it’s a hell to fly honesty, I think that the physics of the DA42 are not broken, it just sucks to fly it
I had the free version (only a couple planes and part of Hawaii to fly in). The graphics were far better than FSX. The problem with the sim was that it wasn't a sim but a game. Most of the avionics didn't work and you mostly just had a bunch of game like task to do.
1. There were apparently some pretty good mod tools (source: modders and DTG), but those nevver got off the ground because they dicided to pull the plug VERY prematurely. 2. No jet planes whatsoever. (some where rumored to be in dev before they shut down the game. 3. AP just did not work at all..... So if you don't love playing with trims then STFU. 4. Failure to deliver AirHauler level career ( which was implied in marketing)
Fsw: Is a copy of Fsx with worse graphics and scenery.
Fsx: Is Fsw with good(Ish) graphics and scenery

I got this one on Steam for free. I had the Dovetail Flight School and then they upgraded to FSW. It was good for those who did not have good hardware and wanted to learn how to fly. Specially Flight Sim School.
The issue is that they made it look good but really not much else. If they had some more planes it would be wayyy better
FSW was a decent enough flight sim, but it was doomed from the start by the fact that MS had pretty much decided they wanted to develop MSFS 2020 by the time FSW released. Dovetail had no option but to abandon their sim, as MS still owned the rights to the IP. While FSW looks pretty good, even now, unfortunately, it's a more or less totally fictional representation of the world, especially next to MSFS 2020's actual satellite imagery. Also Dovetail never implemented proper night-lighting, which pretty much rules out night-flying.

I bought this when it was on the store...on sale. Fancy FSX imo. They had DLC for it as well including more planes.
hmmm, I was hoping for not just accurate information, but some inside information possibly. Microsoft abandoned and dismantled their Flight sim team after Microsoft Flight failed so horribly. They sold the code to Lockheed and Dovetail. (Microsoft gave Dovetail the Train Simulator code when that was abandoned as well). Dovetail released FSX Steam Edition then started reworking it into FSW. Just like they reworked Microsoft Train simulator into Train Simulator 2019, then later into Train Sim World. But then there was a resurgence in Flight simulator popularity and Microsoft announce they were doing an all new Flight Simulator. If memory serves me right, just before the announcement, FSW disappeared suddenly without warning. My theory is Microsoft took back the rights and gave the code to Asobo, who then build FSX into MSFS2020 that we have today.

Great video Swiss! The worst part about this game was the bleached out washed out saturated look of the world. Even ReShade struggled to fix that. The planes are very well rendered as you said and some of the menu and other design elements are cleaner than MSFS. IIRC Orbx supplied the global textures. However, putting aside MSFS give me a modded FSX:SE any day😀
Nice flight simulators! (1:24)
Ahh Dovetail games. Paid DLC simulator.
oh wow didn't realize i came so quick 😂
This is based on FSX because Dovetail Games bought the FSX license; they are the ones who published FSX Steam edition. They had big plans for this game but it is suspected Microsoft wanted it taken down in favor of the upcoming MSFS. Also FSX addons sort of work.
Yeah, always wondered if MS offered them some $$$ to have it removed
hmm this suspiciously looks like a FlyWings rework lol, the menu interface is literally straight out of FlyWings with some changes made
Go to Santa fe muni it has short and narrow runways
This is literally train sim world, but with planes. I have train sim world on my Xbox, and even the menus are the same
That's typical DTG all over, Having played Train Simulator "Classic" for years they do the bare minimum whilst charging a fortune. All their addons on are never right and have issues, the base game has had problems ever since release which they never fix or want to even attempt to fix. They are utter cowboys.
